ADOLESCENCE

The purpose of this course is provide an overview of theories, research, issues, and
applications related to adolescent development. The text for the class is Santrock, J.W.
(2003). Adolescence, 10th Ed. New York: McGraw-Hill.
Dr. Santrock’s office is GR 4.127 and his office hours are Mon at 6-7 p.m. and Thur
11-noon., or by appointment. The teaching intern for this class is Brandi Holliday. Her
office is GR 4.305 and her office hours are Mon 6-7 p.m. and Thur 11-12 a.m., or by

The format of the course will be lecture/discussion for the first part of each class and
then small group discussion in the second part. You are expected to complete the reading
assignments prior to coming to each class and actively participate in class discussion.
There will be three opportunities (exams). They will consist of multiple choice items,
definitions of concepts, and short essays. We will go over more details about the
opportunities in the first class period, including how grades will be determined, posted, and
so on. Each of the three opportunities will count 25 percent of your final grade in the
course.
The remaining 25 percent of your grade will consist of completing a portfolio of
activities and participating in class discussion. You portfolio assignments will be given at
the end of each class and you are expected to bring them with you and hand them in the
next class period. The activities will consist of self-assessments, reflective thinking, and
other activities. You will be required to type your responses (except for checking answers
on the self-assessments). Handwritten answers will not be accepted. In addition to typing
your answers, either staple the worksheets together or use a paper clip. Your portfolio
activities will be handed back to you the following week after they have been turned in
Your attendance will be verified by handing in your portfolio activities each week. Three or
more unexcused absences will automatically result in a lowering of your grade. One more
note: No cells phones. If you bring one to class, be sure it is turned off. If it goes off in class,
you will be asked to leave the class for the remainder of that class period.
