BIO 4V40

Medical and Molecular Cell Biology

Fall 2005

Class Times: Tues. and Thurs. 12:30- 1:45; FO 3.616

Instructor: Dr. Gail Breen

FO 3.710; (972) 883-2504
Office Hours: Tues. 2 pm (or by appointment)

Course Description:

This course will focus on the molecular and cellular basis of various processes involved in health and disease.
The goals of this course are:
1) Development of skills needed to critically read and understand scientific literature.
2) Development of skills necessary for clear, precise and accurate oral presentation of scientific data.

Course Format:

For the first part of this course, selected papers or book chapters will be assigned for each class or topic. Students are
expected to have read the assigned papers or chapters before class and be prepared to discuss and analyze them in
class. Attendance and class participation are an important part of this class. There will also be two examinations
covering this material.

For the second part of this course, students will present a seminar (approximately 30 minutes in length) on an approved
topic of their choice. Students should post their primary paper(s) at least one week in advance of their presentation.

Course Grading: Attendance and Class Participation 25%

Oral Presentation 35%
Exams 40%

Prerequisites: BIO 3302 (Eukaryotic Cell and Molecular Biology)
