EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY

BIOLOGY 3370

SPRING 2006
OBJECTIVES:
Biology 3370, Exercise Physiology, examines physiologic and biochemical responses to acute and long–term
exercise. The course reviews the basics of normal human physiology and biochemistry and applies these principles to
the adaptations seen during exercise. This review includes cardiovascular, muscular, endocrine, renal, nervous and
gastrointestinal organ systems in addition to a discussion of training and ergogenic aides.

Textbooks: Exercise Physiology, Powers and Howley, Fifth Edition, McGraw-Hill, 2004.
ISBN 0-07-255728-1

Instructor: John H. Moltz, Ph.D.

Schedule: Lecture – Monday, Wednesday 5:30pm-6:45pm (See attached Lecture Outline)

OUTCOMES:

The student will therefore:

1. Understand the basic physiological principals involved during exercise
2. Understand how these basic physiologic mechanisms are impacted by exercise
3. Understand the principals of exercise training
4. Understand how nutrition, training, ergogenic supplements and the environment affect exercise performance.

ASSESSMENT:

Grading: The course grade for Biology 3370 will be determined by an average of the four
progress exams. The exams will be short answer, essay-type questions. Makeup exams are
not routinely given. Arrangement for a makeup exam must be
made in advance of the scheduled exam date (See attached schedule).

Course letter grades will be assigned according to the following schedule:

A: 100- 89.6 B: 79.6-86.9 C: 69.6-76.9 D: 59.6-66.9
B+: 89.5-87.0 C+: 79.5-77.0 D+: 69.5-67.0 F: <59.6

Lecture exams are never curved. Alternative methods to enhance or change a grade, e.g.,
reports, projects, etc., do not exist.
The last date to withdraw from the course WP/WF is March 23, 2006.

Dr. Moltz is available to students before and after each scheduled lecture and lab. Dr. Moltz can also be reached by
appointment in his office (F3.310A) at 972-883-4172, Email: JMoltz@Utdallas.edu.
