The 2015 Town of Strathmore budget was brought to council for final
approval at the Dec. 3 council meeting. The total operating budget is
$28,354,000, and the total capital
spending projected is $10,853,000,
which will see 29 initiatives completed
in 2015.
In the past the town has borrowed
money from the Credit Union. Once
was for the expense of the Aquatic
Centre expansion in 2010, and the outstanding principal as of Nov. 6 was at
$1,302,060. The second was in 2011
to purchase a parcel of land adjoining
Kinsmen Park, which was sitting at an
outstanding principal of $1,418,470.
The budget was prepared on the basis of the loans being paid out before
2015, with unrestricted surplus money.
Including interest the amount to be
paid is $2,720,530.
Also included is funding by borrowing $3 million from the Alberta Capital
Finance Authority on a 15 year basis at
three per cent and that will be directed
towards the Lakeside Blvd reconstruction, said Mel Tiede, director of corporate services.
The Lakeside Blvd road project,
which would include surface and underground improvements, was deferred to 2015 after council decided
that putting out the tender in January
may result in a better price, and will
give the contractor more time to get
the work done in the case of possible
delays.
We did decide to pay out the two
outstanding loans and use surplus to
do that. We also felt it was important
enough to take on the two major road
projects so that we would borrow
money at a lower rate than previously.
I just wanted to clarify that in case anybody was wondering what we were
doing, said Councillor Pat Fule.
Tiede did mention the loans will be
paid off in December and that the town
will not be borrowing until mid-year,
which would mean saving the interest
on that dollar amount for a period of
six to seven months.

Strathmore E.M.T spend long hours every year collecting gifts from Strathmore

are packed and donated by students and
teachers to go to Operation Christmas

like it will be close to 600 boxes this year.
All donations are taken to Samaritans

We often hear stories about the good and bad
effects about consuming coffee. One idea that hasnt
been scientifically proven but looks retrospectively
at large groups of people worldwide. There is a link
between drinking coffee and reducing the risk of
type 2 diabetes. It doesnt seem to matter if the
coffee is decaf or not but it is recommended that
the coffee be drunk with little or no sugar and milk.

E-cigarettes are not legal in Canada but in countries

where they are, there has been a significant increase
in the number of youth who have never smoked
start to use this new device. This group was almost
twice as likely to start smoking regular cigarettes
than those who never used e-cigarettes. Thats a
concern to health professionals because nicotine is
an addictive drug and can have adverse effects on
the adolescent brain.
There has been much in the media lately about
vitamins and whether they are worth the money.
One supplement that is worth it is the one to help
minimize age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
AMD can lead to blindness, but good scientific
studies have show that formulas containing zinc,
lutein and other products can help prevent this
serious eye problem. Our pharmacists can clarify
which is the best combination.

2015 budget approved

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

After numerous hours of crunching
numbers, cutting costs and figuring out
how to deal with increases, the Town
of Strathmore has completed the 2015
budget. The town will see a tax increase
of 3.5 per cent in 2015.
It is a tight budget, were happy
were able to keep it down to 3.5 per
cent, never like to see taxes go up but
there are just increased charges and
amounts to deal with, said Councillor Bob Sobol, who thanked staff and
corporate services for all the work they
have done.
The operating budget for 2015 is for
a total of $28,354,000, and Mel Tiede,
director of corporate services for the
town.
In 2014 the overall property tax increase was less than one half of a per
cent, meaning there were many people
who saw an increase of their tax bill.
Some highlights from the operating
budget are: the Aquatic Centre, Family
Centre, Civic Centre and Curling rink
operations are supported by taxes to
the amount of $2,200,000; spending in
protective forces, the RCMP, Fire and
Municipal Enforcement, is $3,418,000;
park and seasonal spending is $773,000;
road services, cleaning, snow removal
and maintenance is $1,799,000. The
Strathmore Municipal Library received
good news with the 2015 budget; they
will see a much needed increase of $2

per capita, approximately $206,000.

Marigold Library Systems also receiving $70,500.
On the capital side, we have 29 projects totaling $10,853,000. The largest
dollar amount will be spent on roads
for $7,576,000, said Tiede.
The largest project is Lakeside Blvd
and 2nd Street, which was deferred
from this years budget with the hope
of getting a better rate by tendering it
out in January or February.
Other highlights from the capital
budget for 2015 are nine water and
sewer projects for $2,376,00, the largest of those being the structural repairs for the Brentwood reservoir for
$1,172,000 and the Orchard Park trunk
upgrade at $600,000; the total spending
on equipment is $711,000 which will
see the town purchase a full-size grader
$333,000, and an ice cleaning machine
for the Family Centre for $158,000.
The budget also included funding by
borrowing $3 million from the Alberta
Capital Finance Authority over 15 years
at three per cent interest. The reserves
funding equals $2,053,000.

Strathmore RCMP are currently

investigating damage to a local
business. Sometime between the
late hours of November 24th and
early morning of November 25th
the glass window in the ATM room
of the Chinook Credit Union was
broken. It is believed that there
was a scuffle between a group of
people that night when the
damage took place.
If you have any information that
could help solve this investigation
please contact the
Strathmore RCMP.

At the Nov. 19 council meeting a bylaw was
passed to allow for Emotional Support Animals
(ESA) within the town boundaries. On Dec. 3 an
amendment to the fees bylaw was brought to
council to create a licensing fee for ESA. The fee
recommended is $25, which is the same as a dog
license. Also included are a replacement for a lost
tag fee $10, and impoundment fees at $40 per day.
Council approved the amendment.

Building permits so far this year are $15 million

the year and there are a few permits that havent
been processed yet. Also currently in the works

BRBC SUPPORT
A letter from the Bow River Basin Council (BRBC) was
received with a request to the town for financial support.
The town has received similar letters in the past but havent
previously donated, despite being members. The BRBC has
supported the cooperative stormwater management initiative in the past by applying, successfully, for the RBC Blue
Water Grant to help fund thee water balance study. A typical range for donations is .15 cents to .70 cents per capita.
Council agreed to make a donation of $1,852.80, which is .15
cents per capita.

PROMOTING STRATHMORE
Bailee Simonin, 21, was before council to inform them and
the town about her intention to run in the Miss Universe
Canada pageant in the spring of 2015. She was also asking
for their financial support to help with some of the costs she
will incur.
After determining that her request was done properly under the new donation policy guidelines, Councillor Denise
Peterson made a motion to donate $500 to Simonin, which
was approved.

Leos giving back

The Strathmore High School Leo Club has been hosting a Christmas Dinner for over 10 years. The event takes place to give back to the community,
focusing on the seniors in Strathmore that may not have the opportunity
to have a turkey dinner. The students do all the legwork, finding sponsors,
cooking and serving the meal and providing entertainment. Many attendees
stayed to enjoy the winter band concert that was held after the dinner on
Tuesday, Dec. 2. Lily Furfaro (l-r), Amy Lampbert and Courtney Bangen are
a few of the Leo Club members who helped out on Dec. 2.

Badlands leave bad taste

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Many town councillors were not happy, on Dec.
3, to see representatives of the Canadian Badlands
(CB) before them once again to pitch the benefits
of being a Badlands member.
Brad Tucker, executive director for CB, said the
vision is to elevate southern Alberta to the point
of being an iconic tourist destination, for it to
stand alongside the Canadian Rockies. This is a
realistic vision, and were seeing more interest all
the time from international and national visitors in
the many tourism assets of this region.
He spoke of how Strathmore is a key community, something that has been brought up by
every representative over the years. Tucker also
mentioned the conference that CB is planning to
hold in Strathmore in March. It will attract 250
delegates from across Alberta, and the direct economic impact would be an average spending of
$217 per person, approximately $163,000 coming
into town, said Tucker.
The CB plan on hiring local caterers, local entertainment, facility rentals, pre-event at a restaurant
in town, and the hotel rooms, but the conference
can only be held in Strathmore if the town remains a member of the CB.
The direct and indirect benefits of this conference have to come to a community that is a member and that is supporting us, said Tucker.
Councillor Bob Sobol said this is the third time
a CB representative has come before council, and
the pitch has almost been the same word-forword.
What I am interested in is what have you done
for us and from what I can see the answer is nothing and that bothers me because I was in this exact same position a year ago and two years ago
where we had all these ideas of what we were
going to do absolutely nothing has happened,
it gets a little frustrating, said Sobol.
He knows the CB have had issues and some
unfortunate situations, but said as a councillor he

questions if he even wants to partner with them

because whatever they have said they will do still
hasnt been done.
Councillor Rocky Blokland said this council and
previous council are not left with a very good feeling when it comes to the CB and what theyre
proposing, since nothing has been seen to date.
Councillor Pat Fule said that the past council
felt there were many things that could be done for
Strathmore, but they werent seeing anything tangible come from what CB was proposing. In 2013
it was up in the air as to whether or not the town
would stay a member until Fule met with Cindy
Amos, former executive director, over lunch and
her passion won him over, and had him convincing council to give it another shot.
I think in the last year were still kind of wondering what it is exactly that has happened, or
has been done concretely that would show us that
were doing well being a part of Badlands, said
Fule.
Simple things like seeing CB signs with Strathmore listed on it would go a long way to appeasing some of council, as would being able to find
links to Strathmore on the CB website.
Tucker said at the time the signage was made
Strathmore was not a member. A single panel to
replace would be more than $1,000, and would
be a massive hit to their budget to replace all of
them. He also said there have been issues with
the website that are being worked out, and agreed
that they can do a better job at facilitating the
flow of information. Tucker suggested that council give very specific direction on what they want
to have happen.
When it comes to tourism development its
very unique for each community and it needs to
be a solution that is grown from the grassroots of
your community, said Tucker.
I dont agree, what we have been told in the
past is that you folks are going to come and talk
to us and were going to work on a plan together,
and that includes putting our name on a map, putting our name on a website. These are not com-

plicated things, we want to know that were part of the Badlands, weve been paying dollars for this, we want to know
what the result is, said Sobol.
It was decided, mainly due to the upcoming conference,
that council would remain a CB member for one more year.
The cost of the membership is .50 cents per capita, with a
three per cent cost of living levy applied.
Ill reluctantly support this but Im really hoping well
see something come out of it other than the conference, said
Blokland.
Im very disappointed in the lack of action thats taken
place and I do hope that this year is going to be different,
Im very hopeful, said Sobol.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year!
What! you ask?
Time flies by faster by the
year but Happy New Year
already!!!
Yes, according to the Christian
calendar the New Year arrived
Nov. 30. This was the first
Sunday of Advent the season
the Christian calendar designates as a time to prepare
for Christmas. Advent is an
amazing celebration marking
the New Year.
Advent is a season of reflection. When driving home
from Rockyford the other day
I was awe struck: the wind
had created such beautiful,
absolutely stark white swirling
formations of snow the ditch
was an artists canvas. At that
moment a snowy owl swooped
across my path. I had to catch
my breath and reflect on the
beauty of creation.
Advent is a season of hope of
expectation. Each of us hopes
for different things. The young
ones might hope for a mighty
haul from a generous Santa.
Others hope for families to

BY-ELECTION

Our question of the week is: Why should voters choose

you to represent them for the rest of this election term?
Dont forget! Election Day is Dec. 15. Voting stations will
be set up at the Strathmore Civic Centre from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. All you need is your I.D. and to have lived in town for
at least six months.

ALLAN AUGER
Probably the hardest thing to do, tell everyone why they should vote for you. Well I guess
I would expect people to want the same things
from me as I would want to see in a candidate.
I dont think a candidate has to show themselves as a team leader but rather a team player. It takes seven people on council to work
together to set and achieve common goals.
It is not uncommon for individuals to have
different ideas on which way council should decide to proceed on
certain issues but it shows real character to be able to compromise
and listen to each other and the residents of Strathmore as well to
separate the wants from the needs of the town.
Several years ago I would never have given thought to running
for council. I always thought that was for people who had too
much time on their hands or were looking to advance themselves
politically or who just wanted to see their name in newsprint. So
why am I interested in local politics now? Well a couple of reasons
come to mind.
I left this town a few years back as any young person might do,
thinking that Strathmore did not have a lot to offer me. But after
doing some travelling around western Canada and trying my hand
at several different trades I always found my way back to this town.
I suppose this is where my heart truly is and after a few years of
thinking Strathmore had nothing to offer me I came to the realization that this was not true.
So that is why I want people to vote for me on Dec. 15. I want to
have the opportunity to give back to this small town and work for
the people within it and to help keep Strathmore what it is today,
which is a great place to call home.
I also want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous
New Year.

Representing the people of
Strathmore as a councillor is a
responsibility that every elected
official, no matter what level of
government or organization, can
be taken lightly. In many ways officials that have not taken this seriously points to a core failure of
our current governance and why
we have many of the issues that our communities face
today.
Why should voters chose me to represent them? is
an easy question to answer. I believe strongly that the
responsibility of a councillor is to represent the people
of Strathmore above all else. This is the first and last
thought in my mind as I research and communicate
with you, the citizens.
I also believe that elections should not be popularity contests. Rather you should chose your councillor
by merit and their ability to fulfill the duties required.
Running the Town of Strathmore should be looked at
as a business venture and as such our elected officials
should be able to make sound business decisions, pos-

I look forward to being your
next town councillor because; I
believe Strathmore needs positive,
fresh ideas, unbiased thinking, and
fiscal responsibility. I have the desire and the availability to connect
with the residents and businesses
of Strathmore.
Strathmore is poised for residential, commercial and industrial growth. This will bring
tremendous opportunities for planned expansion that
will benefit Strathmore residents and the surrounding
communities for years to come.
Over the course of the next three years, I am committed to working with the town council, residents, surrounding communities, committees and businesses to
ensure Strathmore remains a great place for parents to
raise their children, and an outstanding place for all of
its citizens to call home.
The community of Strathmore has proven time and
again to be a warm, welcoming town, where people

I have to admit this past four
weeks has been a learning curve,
but an exciting adventure for sure.
I hope this adventure is just getting started. A vote for me is a vote
for a young, energetic, passionate
person who is excited to step into
and learn the ins and outs of municipal politics.
I feel I have a lot to offer this great town, the town
Ive grown up in and care so much about. Last week
we had a candidates forum and it gave me good insight in to the concerns and wants of the citizens. With
your help on Election Day I would like start working
with the rest of council to start to tackle these issues
and any others that arise.

huge want for the town but obviously isnt going to
happen overnight. It costs a lot of money to both build

Some of the candidates have been talking about
transparency, being fiscally responsible and encouraging growth but they present a risk to you and our community. They have no track record that demonstrates
these beliefs. When the town has asked for volunteers
to sit on committees they have not stepped up to the
plate. How can you vote on a promise without some
history to back it up, to see real signs of the beliefs and
character they profess.
I am an active member of the community, I sit on
town and community committees, I have a demonstrated track record of being fiscally responsible and
transparent. Full disclosure is not a pitch to you, it is a
personal belief that I adhere to, not just for compliance
to retain my licenses for my business but because it is
the right thing to do!
It is extremely important that your councillor possesses these beliefs and skills. Your councillor must
also be accessible to all town residents and businesses.
My office is on 2nd Ave beside Rockys Bakery. Stop by
any time. Lets move our town forward together.
I am asking for your vote on Dec. 15 to do just that!

help each other in times of need. The heart of this town

is truly inspirational. As Strathmore grows, we can retain that heart, while building a community with transit,
a vibrant downtown, a booming industrial foundation,
more amenities and activities for all ages, and higher
education for our children.
I have been involved as a volunteer in community renewal and growth for many years, and can bring those
successful ideas with me. My family commitments allow
me to dedicate the time and energy required of a town
councillor and community volunteer. I can think of no
better use of that time, than supporting the community
and residents that make this town a great place to live
and call home.
As your voice on town council, I will always be available for your comments, questions and guidance. Please
contact me by telephone, email, Facebook, Canada Post
or in person. I welcome and encourage dialogue from
all residents, patrons and visitors.
I ask for your support and vote on Dec. 15.
I look forward to serving as a voice of reason on your
Town council.

tees.
All the above has given me the knowledge and experience of knowing the wants, needs and direction of
the community. As your councillor, I will listen to you,
the people, to make things happen. I will also work
closely with the mayor, council and administration on
your behalf.
I know what has to be done with the many issues in
town, i.e: upgrade our infrastructure, recreation, hospital and library facilities, while still being responsible
with the taxpayers dollars. This is a very complex job
and Im willing to tackle it for you.
Through my past experiences, I can step into the job
where I left off, a job and community that I love and am
so familiar with.
Please vote for me!

and then run. We can however look at doing a lot of

pre-building legwork such as procuring land and looking in to building grants. Also in the meantime we can
look in to working with some of the many non-profit
groups in Strathmore to come up with other solutions
to provide more recreational activities for our kids.
An outdoor rink for instance would be a huge and
could be utilized year round also, lacrosse in summer.
I also want to see downtown revitalized. I am easily
approachable and look forward to hearing from any
and all citizens. I have a lot of ideas on how we can
make Strathmore even better as we go forward and
grow as a community. So in closing Ill say again a vote
for me is a vote for a young, passionate person with
a strong voice who is really looking forward to serving as a new voice on your town council. On Dec. 15
get on down to the civic centre and mark an X beside
Jason Pollo.
If we work together there is nothing we cant accomplish.

VOTE December 15th!

Investing in Infrastructure across Canada

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

In my most recent news column, I reported on
the important role of the Gas Tax Fund in our riding. Our Conservative Government returns these
revenues to our Crowfoot riding where they were
raised so that local governments can spend them
on projects that are important in their own communities. Im pleased to report more good news in
this weeks news column.
Building on the Governments historic infrastructure investments, including under the New
Building Canada Plan, Prime Minister Stephen
Harper recently announced new investments that
will continue to build and renew infrastructure
across the country. This announcement is part
of the Governments unprecedented and historical investment in public infrastructure to ensure
Canadas future economic growth for years to
come. The ability to invest this substantial amount
in targeted infrastructure is a direct result of the
Governments responsible actions to return to fiscal balance.
Our Governments unprecedented investments
in infrastructure, the most significant in our countrys history, have already yielded significant results for hard working Canadians and their families, ensuring the resilience of our economy and

creating jobs, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The new infrastructure support builds on the
foundation necessary to promote future growth
and prosperity in our great country, generating
increased job opportunities, health and environmental benefits, and reduced commuting times,
A few years ago, when our government fought
off the effects of the global recession in Canada,
we launched the largest-ever infrastructure program in Canadian history. As your Member of Parliament, I will always remember the remarkable
response I received from all across our riding as
local mayors and other officials and staff worked
with me and my staff to get shovel ready projects off the ground. We seized the opportunity to
go ahead and work on local infrastructure projects
some of which were not slated to be started or
completed until much later. It was a busy time for
sure and again I can say that the efforts in many
communities across our riding were impressive.
In Economic Action Plan 2013, we continued
to build on our Governments historic infrastructure investments, with significant funding for public infrastructure over the next decade, including
for the New Building Canada Plan for provincial,
territorial and municipal infrastructure. This New
Building Canada Plan is now the largest and longest federal infrastructure investment in our nations history. It continues to focus on supporting

projects that enhance economic growth, job creation and

productivity.
Canadas prosperity and quality of life depend on a vast
network of public infrastructure from roads and highways,
to bridges, transit systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, ports, airports and recreational and cultural facilities.
As Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, We have the resources necessary to make this crucial investment in Canadas
future economic prosperity because of the bold measures
our Government has taken to return to balanced budgets.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Strathmore steps up!

To the Editor
Thanks to the generous support of this community with donations and physical support the October
Thrift Sale was a wonderful success. Local folks were
generous to the point that we regretfully had to turn
away donations on Wednesday afternoon of the sale
week as space and workers became overwhelmed
with your kindness.
During the sale we were asked about what happens
with the money raised and with the items left over at
the end of the sale. Our goal is to provide support to
community projects, provincial and national projects,
world projects as well as our own church.
Last year we supported the following: Wheatland
Christmas Hamper, Wheatland Food Bank, Strathmore
Handibus, Wheatland Crisis Shelter, Leo Club, Mustard
Seed, Calgary Drop-In Centre, Acadia Place, C.U.P.S,
Bissell Centre, St. Andrews College, St. Stephens College, Foothills Presbyterial Student Bursary Fund,
Alberta & N.W. Conference Student Bursary Fund
Society, Friends of the Observer, Food Grains Bank,
Alberta Child Wellbeing Initiative, Alberta C.G.I.T.,

Womens Interchurch Council of Canada, High River

United Church Women, United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund, Foothills Presbyterial, HopEthiopia, as well as a woman presently studying for
ministry who has local connections with our church
from childhood. We also provide a significant amount
toward the running of our church and its outreach.
Items left at the end of each sale are resorted,
packed and delivered to the Calgary Drop-In Centre
warehouse where they can then be redistributed to
those in need in Calgary. Nothing is kept back from
sale to sale with the exception of Christmas items
from the spring sale.
Words can only begin to express our appreciation
for the community we live in and the widespread support we receive for these sales. We know the hard
work put in is appreciated by you, our many friends
and customers, and we all look forward to getting
together again in April.

Ratepayer requests to lower road ban

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

A resident concern that there is a constant flow of fullyladen tanker transport trucks travelling everyday, all-day on
Township Road 245A through Chancellor, was brought to
council as it is becoming a safety risk to those in the hamlet.
The proposal was for council to consider altering the road-

so the affected roads are not receiving any more
damage.
They respected that the trucks were courteously
staying to the speed limit, but if an accident were
to happen then a revision could be necessary.
It was councils responsibility to communicate
to administration in regards to the resident in the
Hamlet of Chancellor, to notify that the request to
change the ban restriction for 75 to 50 per cent
was not approved by council.
I think its the heavy trucks, the noise perhaps and theyre big trucks and thats the main
concern. Theres no indication of them speeding,
theyve been very courteous. Theyre not loaded,
so theyre not doing any damage, said Parkin.
He added that residents had to realize that trucks
do make a little more noise and people have to
be cautious around them, but they do have the
choice to live in the area, as Husky has been on
that Rural Road 211 for quite some time.
Some of the residents didnt feel that big truck
should be going through Chancellor, said Parkin.
The county Protection Services will continue to
monitor the situation when patrol units are in the
area.
Thus far our monitoring efforts have been out
there five times and theres never been any issues
with any big trucks, speeding or overweight, said
Parkin.
FIRE CAPITAL COMMITTEE
Wheatland County area fire departments submitted a 10-year Capital Purchase Plan to assist
with the fire halls future purchases.
The county had asked the Fire Capital Committee to submit their plans and what they plan to do
with them.
The committee has to adapt to policies set out
with certain criteria for fire equipment. The items
that will be available, but not limited to, are fire
service vehicles, fire halls, renovations, additions,
sheds, cold storage structures and fire fighting
protective equipment.
The committee will be entitled to be the primary
owner of the purchases they make with capital
items.
Rockyford Fire Department has been active with
this plan, as within the next 10 years they are buying:
ATVs/ trailer in 2015, which has $39,000 (60
per cent) funded for the $65,000 purchase.
$175,000 worth of rescue equipment in 2016,
which has $105,000 already put in.

a $400,000 tender in 2018 that $240,000 put

in,
a $200,0000 Bush Buggy that will have
$120,000 down on it by 2020.
Capital Fire Committee member and Rockyford
Mayor Darcy Burke provided some insight to what
this will mean to the area.
I know, as with any municipal budgets, longterm planning is certainly a strategic way to go.
Weve been a long time getting our fire departments to this point and now we got the folks sitting down at the table and started to do this long
term planning and its easier to finance and plan
for, said Burke.
So what I see in 2015 I know the ATV discussion is around some of the rescues the department had done in the past couple of years, where
we havent been able to get into areas with the
standard truck.
He said that ATVs will be able to take full advantage of the recently abandoned railway tracks
and will be more practical in those in those tight
area rescues.
The other thing that has come to light recently is the removal of the rail lines. The other part
about that is we know very well these abandoned
rail lines are going to get used by ATV users and
the possibility of rescues taking place. Those rightof-ways are not wide enough to get a standardized
vehicle down them, said Burke.
One of the discussions that took place with our
fire department was that access, and thats where
the ATV will make a huge difference for us.
The funds for the ATV are on schedule as the
purchase will be in on time for the New Year.
Absolutely, that is our request for funding
from the capital organization and then it will be
matched with the local municipal and fundraising
dollars to purchase that unit, said Burke. Lets
say if we have a mechanical issue, or we end up
having to replace a different truck earlier then that
thats one of the special dynamics of the capital
group is that we can go to them and change this
plan up a little bit. But what it is saying right now
is that long-term, the next 10 years, this is what
the replacement will be.
Burke believes that this plan will be a valuable
asset to operations of an emergency response.
Its another tool for us to use in our emergency
calls and we see it as being a valuable tool in areas we cant get to with a normal apparatus, said
Burke.
Other towns in the county that have been
worked into this 10-year capital plan include
Dalum, Standard, Carseland, Gleichen, Rosebud,
Hussar and Strathmore Rural Fire Department.

Christmas with the Strathmore Municipal Library

SHANNON LECLAIR

Times Reporter

The Christmas holidays are right a round the corner,
which means kids will also soon be out of school and looking for something to do. As they do every time school is
out, the Strathmore Municipal Library has a couple of fun,
free events planned.
The Ginger All the Way program runs Dec. 22. The library
purchased gingerbread houses and trains for kids to decorate, and had not anticipated the volume of interest that
they would see.
Shortly after we started advertising the program, we had
to cap it at 50 participants. Currently the program is full,
but the library does have a waiting list, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services.
The library will be calling everyone who has registered to
confirm attendance the week before, and there is a chance
that someone on the waiting list may still be able to get into
the program.
Dec. 23 is the Holiday Make Shop. Libraries are embracing maker spaces, which is a space where people can come
and create, said Erison; theres usually a wide range of tools
and materials available.
We bring the tools, we bring the supplies, they bring the
inspiration and they can come and create. We decided on a
holiday make shop where we will supply all the tools, the
materials and kids can come and create ornaments, gifts,
cards, whatever their hearts desire right before Christmas,
said Erison.
In celebration of that day, and to get into the holiday
spirit, classic Christmas movies will be playing on the pro-

jection screen. This program is drop-in based, and families

are welcome to come by anytime during the 2 p.m. to 5
p.m. duration of the program.
Also, from now until Christmas the library is selling holiday gift packs.
Theyre the perfect gift that people will cherish, love and
appreciate all year long, said Erison.
The family pack includes either a backpack or library
tote, plus family membership for $35. The senior package
is a library tote and senior membership for $20, the adult
pack either a backpack or a tote and an adult membership
for $25; or theres the option of a childrens package which
includes a popular monkey book bag and a membership
for $15.
The library is looking for members to join the board. The
term is for one year, and they meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month. A typical trustee puts in about five
hours, of which would include the meeting and preparation
for it. More info can be found at info at www.strathmorelibrary.ca/libraryboard.

DAVE COLLINS

Strathmore & District Christmas Hamper Chairman

This time next year, Santas Elves (the Strathmore & District Christmas Hamper volunteers) will be working longer
and nearer to Christmas Day before distributing their generous hampers.
But this year, due to the way the calendar falls, the cutoff
for gifts such as food and toys is almost here and by now
the elves will be busy packing all those goodies.
So with this shortened campaign the society is looking
for cash donations to fund our purchases from the local
stores.
We knew we had a short campaign this year and planned
our donations and purchases accordingly, said Dave Collins, the Chair of the Society. Food and toys have arrived by
the truckload and we are proud once again to acknowledge
the generosity of the entire community of Strathmore and
the surrounding Wheatland County. The schools, churches
and all the service clubs along with many businesses have
excelled in their support.
It looks like the society will be filling close to the 180
hampers projected, which is good or even sad depending
on your point of view. The local economy is buoyant, but
low wages and income continues to contribute to the need
for Christmas Hampers. There is no common type of family
as far as applicants are concerned they range across all
ages for the parents and the children, and the size of the
families are just as varied.
When those families are on a tight budget any small crisis
such as car repairs or medical expenses can mean no presents for the children nor a traditional feast on Christmas
Day. So once again the society thanks all those who have
donated.

Phone fraud scam

SHANNON LECLAIR

Times Reporter

With the news surrounding all of the different ways people are trying to scam you out of your money, being aware
and trusting your instincts that somethings not right is key
in making sure your money stays in your pocket.
On Dec. 4 a resident told the Strathmore RCMP detachment of suspected fraudulent activity, and filed a complaint.
The resident told RCMP a Mega Millions representative,
from Washington, D.C., contacted them by phone.
The representative was instructing the resident to transfer
a large sum of money, by a bank transfer, in order to claim
their multi-million dollar prize. An investigation showed
that there have been previous reports of alleged fraud involving the same company based in Las Vegas.
The Strathmore RCMP wants anyone who receives a call
requesting money transfers, or personal information, including credit card numbers to be wary of making that type
of transaction, and to contact Phone Busters at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or their
local RCMP detachment.

The land around the Strathmore
Lakes Estates area had been intended
as Municipal Reserve (MR), and should
have been transferred to the municipality years ago when the land was subdivided. Normally MR is dedicated at subdivision time and the lot is identified as
Lot MR on both the plan and on the certificate of title. This had not been done.
Earlier this year we were in discussions with the developer who now
wanted to transfer the storm pond and
surrounding lands to the town, said
Werner Fischer, director of planning
and development.
In order to make the transfer it would
require a survey, at the cost of approximately $30,000 and the disruption of
the residents, since so much time has
passed.
A plan of action was decided upon
that would allow for the transfer and
would save the money of the developer
and the hassle to the residents.
Fischer said the plan was to do things
in two steps. The first was to see if the
land titles office will accept a descriptive plan, which they did, and then
transfer that land to the town. Now that
descriptive plan can be taken, and there
can be a bylaw passed to convert the
land into MR.
Currently the land has been trans123 2nd Ave

ferred back to the town and the residual land has been sold.
Councillor Bob Sobol was concerned
about losing leverage by going about
things this way, but Fischer assured
him thats not the case.
To have created this as Municipal
Reserve by the conventional process
would have cost the developer at least
$30,000, because it should have been
done a long time ago and now youre
going to have to go into all those residential lots, reestablish those (survey)
pins it would be very disruptive,
said Fischer.
We said we can do this by an alternative method by descriptive plan have
the lands transferred to us, we take
possession and then we pass a bylaw
making it Municipal Reserve. Whether
we do it that way, or the more costly
way we end up at the same place.
The completion of the pathway
around the lake has been a concern for
council and Strathmore Lakes residents.
Fischer said administration is looking
at two ways on how to deal with it,
one of which would be to amend the
deferred servicing agreement which is
registered against the residual parcel so
that it includes completion of the landscaping, and pathways, and would include a security.
Alternatively, and this is the less preferred option, we will simply write them
a letter saying these are the things that
are outstanding, said Fischer.
The town has to register a development agreement for the latest subdivision anyway, and Fischer said he think
they will do a concurrent registration
on the residual of the differed servicing
agreement to complete that landscaping in at least a satisfactory manner.
In order to ensure that actions will
be completed they intend to register a
deferred servicing agreement against
the residual lands and hopefully with
some security. The security will be returned if and when work is completed
and passes an inspection.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Joe and John Van Bavel, identical twins
were born in Belgium in 1899, and came
to Canada with their parents William and
Mary Van Bavel, and the rest of the family in 1910. There were three sets of twins
born into this family of nine children. Unfortunately, four children died in Belgium,
so William and Mary only had five children
left when they travelled to Canada with
Father Van Akens
group of immigrants, and established the District of
Akenstad northeast
of Strathmore in
1908. Father Aken
was an agent for the
C.P.R., and assisted
immigrants to get
established
here.
William
worked
for the C.P.R. constructing the irrigation
system, and later as a second ditch rider.
Digging of the irrigation system was done
with a slip and team of Clydesdale horses.
During the winter months the ditch riders
looked after the horses. In 1917, William
purchased a farm in the Elwood District 3.5
miles south of Tiedes Corner (the Rockyford Road). But, before the family could
move to this farm, William suffered a stroke
and passed away in the Strathmore Hotel
at the age of 45. Mary and her five children
Annie, Joe, John, Jack and Kathleen, eventually moved to the farm, where the boys
did the farming. Mary passed away in 1940.
Elizabeth Koester, born in Iowa in
1911,moved to Rockyford with her family
in 1929, and married Joe Van Bavel (Raymonds father) at St Ritas Church in Rockyford in June 1932. They lived on the Pete
Flem farm in the Elwood district, where Joe
and his twin brother John worked the farm
as partners for 10 years. During the depression, they were hailed out, dried out, and
the dust storms were terrible, but they survived. In the fall of 1945, they moved to the
O. Swanson Farm in the Akenstad District,
which was owned by Joes sister Annie Verwiere, and farmed there until 1952, when
they purchased a farm of their own, four
miles north and four miles east of Strathmore.
Raymond was born on Oct, 6,1944, the
fifth of six children. He was premature, and
it was at least two weeks before his father
knew he had another son! Raymond took
all his education in Strathmore, graduating
from Samuel Crowther in 1962. He excelled

Raymond & Diane Van Bavel

at school sports, and was a champion table tennis player. He also played basketball, football and volleyball. In the summer
months, he helped his father Joe, a cousin
Jim Van Bavel, and neighbour Stan Christie, but spent the winter months working
at the Superior Feed and Supply feedmill in
Strathmore. Joe and Liz retired and moved
to Strathmore in 1968. Joe passed away
from cancer in 1972, and Liz passed away
from Lou Gehrigs disease, in 1984. She had
been very active in CWL and the Happy
Gang.
Dianes
family
originated in southeast Alberta, where
grandfather Sturm
on her mothers
side, was born in
Irvine, Alta. in 1890.
Her grandmother
was born in Odessa,
Russia in 1889 and
moved to Canada in
1906. They were married in 1914, had three
children, and their youngest daughter was
Dianes mother Tillie. On her fathers side,
grandfather Christian Schlaht was born in
Neudorf, Russia in 1886, and grandmother
Emilie Fey was born in Russia in 1888. They
were married in 1906 and had ten children.
Dianes father Jack Schlaht was the third
youngest of the 10 children, and was born
at Burstall, Sask. in 1919.
Diane was born in Empress, Alta. on May
2, 1946, the oldest of three children. Their
farm was at Bindloss, but she was born at
Empress, because that was the closest hospital. She took all her education through
Grade 11 at Bindloss, but had to move
to Medicine Hat for Grade 12. She then
trained at Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary,
to become a Registered Medical Laboratory
Technologist, and worked at the Medicine
Hat Hospital and a Private Clinic, before
moving back to Holy Cross Hospital, until
her marriage.
Raymond and Diane met at a Christmas
Party in 1966, and were married on Oct. 5,
1968. The reception and dance were held
in the Strathmore Legion Memorial Hall.
Earlier that year, Raymond took over his fathers farm, which at the time was a mixed
farm with cattle and hay. In 1982, it became
a grain and hay farm only.
Diane continued working at the Holy
Cross, until their family started arriving.
Troy, born Nov. 17, 1969, is a school teacher in California, married to Dawn with two
children. David, born May 24, 1971, is a
plant operator for Encana at Carbon, married to Heather with two children. Joseph,

born March 31, 1977, in the middle of calving time, now operates the family farm,
married to Patti, with three children.
Raymond played in a Flag Football
League in the 1970s, and is an avid Calgary
Stampeder fan, having held season tickets
since 1966.
His community activities include serving
on the Town & County Recreation Board,
being a delegate then director of United
Farmers of Alberta, a member and past
Grand Knight (twice) of Knights of Columbus, a member of Branch #10 Strathmore
Legion, and a volunteer at Strathmore Heritage Days.
Diane is a staunch member of CWL and
Pastoral Care. She advised she enjoys working outdoors, and is very efficient in operating a tractor and baler. She also enjoys
riding, and volunteers with Alberta Health
Sciences at Strathmore Hospital, and recently received a Volunteer Recognition
Certificate from The Ag Society.
Changes they have seen in the past 47
years are mainly the population growth,
and the demise of small farms.

~ Joe & Jean Vergouwen

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
The Vergouwen family name originates in Holland, and Joes Dad Pete came to Southern Alberta
in 1921 to work for the CPR, building the irrigation
canals using horses. Realizing that Strathmore would
provide a good living for a family, he returned to
Holland in 1929, and married Petronella (Nellie)
Rommers. Returning to Canada after the wedding,
they established the Vergouwen Ranch by purchasing the home quarter from the CPR, five miles south
of Nightingale.
Joe was born in Strathmore in 1936, the youngest
of four children. He
attended the one
room school at Akenstad until 1949,
and after the buses
started running to
Strathmore, attended Samuel Crowther
High
School
through graduation.
He played ball with
Knights of Columbus, and the Strathmore Senior team,
as well as hockey.
His days were filled with ranching with his parents,
helping neighbours during harvest, and assisting in
organizing the Annual Rodeo.
Jean was born in Colchester, England in 1944, during the bombing of English cities. She is the eldest of
seven children. Her father Roy Koch was a Canadian
soldier, and her mother Marguerite McKeever served
with the ATS - Auxiliary Territorial Service formed on
Sept. 9, 1938 initially as a womens voluntary service,
which existed until Feb. 1, 1949 when it was merged
into the Womens Royal Army Corps. Jean and her
mother (a War Bride), sailed to Pier 21 in Halifax, on
the Queen Mary in June 1946. Then they traveled by
train to Nanton, Alta. She attended school in Nanton
and Cayley, in the days of the little yellow school bus.
Following the familys move to Boswell, B.C., she
was bused to Crawford Bay until she graduated. She
attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver before training as a laboratory technologist at
Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary.
Joe and Jean met in Calgary, and were married in
1967, Canadas Centennial Year. They have three sons
Rodney, born in 1968, is married to Beth (Scheer)
and they have a daughter, Jenna, who is pursuing an
environmental degree at U of A and a son, Jack, who
is playing Junior hockey in B.C. Joe and Jeans second
son, Jeffrey, born in 1970, is married to Tara (Cumming) and they have a daughter, Amy, and a son,
John, who are both in high school. Joe and Jeans
third son Alan, born in 1972, is married to Rhonda.
Joe and Jean have travelled to most of the small
town hockey rinks in Alberta, as all three boys
played hockey (often managed or coached by Joe).

Then Rod and Alan added high school rodeo to their

thrills and spills, which took their parents to the rodeo grounds of small town Alberta, as well as South
Dakota, Colorado and Oklahoma to the National
High School Rodeo finals. Jeff, a sprinter, joined the
Calgary Spartans Track and Field team.
The rich sandy soil of this ranchland, along with
copious amounts of water from the Western Irrigation District, has provided a great living for the family. Hereford cows were the mainstay of the herd until
the 1970s, when Charolais bulls entered the scene,
and changed the colour of the calves!
The ranch has changed directions in the last few
years, as they have switched from raising beef cows to
supplying pasture for
Rod and Beths yearlings. To keep things
interesting, Jean keeps
a few heritage hens,
some sheep, a Jersey
cow, and a horse to
ride and drive. Border
Collies are a big help
on the ranch, and she
keeps a few sheep
for the young dogs to
learn how to be skilled
workers. Organic gardening, with its challenges and rewards, sourcing, saving and sharing
heritage seeds are a few of her passions, as well as
growing her own herbs for teas, and healing salves.
Jean was treasurer for many years for the Nightingale Community Association and still enjoys bringing
all the local actors, of all ages, together to produce
the annual Christmas Concert.
Joe is lightly retired, still using his red horse (the
Honda quad) to check on the yearlings, mend fences,
and often ends up at a neighbours for a visit! A team
of Clydesdales (Sarg and Major) were a source of enjoyment, when helping the Reddings from Beiseker
mow hay and pull the bundle wagon during threshing. Joe enjoys watching his grandsons, Jack playing
junior hockey, and, John playing midget ball.
Changes we have seen include irrigation methods that have made tremendous advancements. Fifty
years ago, only land on the downside of the canals
had water gravity fed into small ditches throughout
the fields. Next came water being pumped into aluminum pipes that were moved by hand across the
fields. Soon, wheels were attached to these pipes,
some of which stretched for one quarter of a mile.
Now, we have pivots that can run continuously to irrigate a quarter section or more!
Another big change is the dramatic reduction of
productive agricultural land around Strathmore.
What was once many thriving family farms, has now
been divided and sub-divided into non-agricultural
small holdings.
Ranching in the Nightingale/Strathmore area has
given them a good living, a good life, a wonderful
community, and many super neighbours.

In a rare Sunday afternoon match, the Wheatland Kings were dealt a 5-2 loss by the Three Hills Thrashers at the Strathmore

Kings have tough weekend

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Kings appeared to have put their
early season undisciplined play behind them, but
it crept back in this past weekend.
They dropped a 6-2 to decision to the Red Deer
Vipers on Saturday night on the road and then a
5-2 loss to the Three Hills Thrashers on Sunday
afternoon on home ice.
I think our road game in Red Deer, we were
beat by a team that competed harder for loose
pucks, (they) had more desire and we lost a special teams battle, said head coach Jeremy Blumes.
Brady Bruneau and Brayden Beckley scored in
the Red Deer loss.
Then (on Sunday), it was a conscious decision
that team frustration carried over and we didnt
do a very good job of maintaining discipline and
again werent very good on special teams.
Blumes said that in the game against Three
Hills, it felt as if the Kings had a target on their
backs from the officiating.
There were times crossing the blue line one of
our players received a cross check to his throat
and it went unnoticed. Then everything after the
whistle, there were two teams engaged, it seemed

Strathmore Family Centre

like only one team was making the trip to the penalty box, said Blumes.
The frustration from the coachs perspective is
that undisciplined penalties was thought to be a
thing of the past, but for some reason affected the
teams play.
I felt like we had got past this hump. Its hard
to get into any sort of rhythm when half of each
period theres guys that play in those (penalty killing) situations and guys that arent, said Blumes.
Goal scorers were Kirby Ruzesky and Andrew
McCann against the Thrashers.
It was not all bad this weekend, as there were a
couple of players that stood out and gave it honest
effort.
I thought a guy like Calvin Gordon, who was
scratched last week against Ponoka, stepped back
into the line up with a lot of energy and more
purpose around the puck and competed harder,
said Blumes. Ryan Grasdahl played forward and
defense, he demonstrated hes willing to put the
team first and we just need more guys to take the
cue from him.
The Kings will now travel to Airdrie on Dec.
12 (8 p.m.) before hosting the Cochrane Generals
the following day at (8:15 p.m.) at the Strathmore
Family Centre.

Come Cheer On Your UFA Bisons!

The UFA Bisons were able to find their way out of

an offensive slump in a big way in the back half of a
two game set in the Edmonton area this past weekend.
The Herd lost 4-3 to the SSAC Athletic Club on Dec.
6, but trounced the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers 9-5 the
following day.
Head coach Dan MacDonald was happy to see some
offensive production from the team.
Weve been getting close and working very hard.
We just pressed upon the players that they got to keep
on moving forward and itll come, said MacDonald.
(Sunday against the Rangers), it did finally, weve been
snake bitten around the net, we work hard and get a
lot of chances and just werent finishing and today we
did.
The all-around effort was consistent in the win over
Fort Saskatchewan and it was just some mental lapses
that allowed the Rangers to notch some goals.
We played really well, at one time during the third
period it was 9-2 for us, we kind of let up a little bit and
they got three goals, but we commanded right from
start to finish, said MacDonald. We moved the puck
better and we kept going to the net better. So we did
better things, again goal scorers have to keep going to
the net and I thought we did that really well.
The strength for the Bisons was that they were able
to gain momentum off of the first goal and kept pushing.
I think once we got a couple goals, we got on a roll,
just for the fact we havent been scoring. So the whole
momentum for our team changed, said MacDonald.
Gary Haden led the way with three goals, Barrett
Sheen had two, while Zachery Vinnell, Kyle Gordon
and Austin Cameron added one each in the win.
In the Saturday game versus SSAC, it was just a matter
of misfortunes, as they could not capitalize on chances.
It was tied 3-3 in the third and last two minutes and
again we were all over them and hit some cross bars,
missed two breakaways that we didnt score on. We
end up losing the game, so it was unfortunate, said
MacDonald.
Sheen had two goals, while call-up Jayden Smith had
one in the loss.
The Bisons will have a pair of home games this
weekend, as they will host the Lloydminster Bobcats
(5:15 p.m.) on Dec. 13 and the Grande Prairie Storm (2
p.m.) on Dec. 14.

The Canadian dollar is dropping against the U.S. Whether you believe the new deal with China (based on their currency) is a long term benefit or not, much of our trade is with the U.S. This means
that goods made is the US and shipped to Canada will be paid for in US currency. If the Canadian doller is substantially lower, the exchange rate can result in an increase in prices. Prices are already
starting to increase in some manufacturing areas of the economy and with diesel prices remaining extremely high, shipping will increase as well. Canadian made - no duty or exchange.

Great start for Spartan basketball

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School senior
girls basketball team could not have
asked for a better start as they were
aggressive and driving the basket hard
on route to beating Oilfields Drillers
74-58 at the high school.
Coach Dion Galandy was impressed
with his teams effort but admits it is
only one game and there is still work
to be done
We didnt start off extremely well.
Our first quarter, we had a pretty sizeable lead, but I rolled through all the
girls and give them as many minutes as
possible and for them to get the experience because when injuries happen,
weve got to be prepared (to have)
girls step in, said Galandy. (Wednesday nights) game, we played okay for
our first game. I wasnt excited about
it, we couldve played worse, and it
was a good first win to get the jitters
out of the way.
The strength of the team will be the
familiarity with each other from the
previous season and building confidence on the floor to make those plays.
We got eight returning girls, so
were going to be familiar with each
other. Were going to be able to do a

few more things than we did last year

because we have a little bit more confidence, said Galandy. We have the
experience from going to provincials
last year that will benefit us in the long
run.
The team is healthier than last season, as they have not had to deal with
injuries right off the bat.
I recall we had a couple of injuries
to start off the last year, this year were
pretty healthy, said Galandy.
The make-up of the team will be primarily the players that moved up to
Grade 11 and Grade 12, as they will be
asked to fill the void left by Grade 12s
from a year ago.
We had three Grade 12s last year
and of those three, one was injured
and one was a significant player. Well
see if some of the Grade 11s, who are
now Grade 12s, and some of the Grade
10s who are now Grade 11s can step
up and take their place, said Galandy.
The senior girl Spartans will be hosting their home tournament this weekend Dec. 12 and 13 at the high school.
The senior boys will look to use
their athleticism, as the team will be
young, and to be able to compete with
most of the 3A schools by the end of
the season.
We are a pretty young squad but we

are quite athletic, being young will certainly create some issues early in the
season but we are hoping to be competitive with many of the 3A teams in
the zone by the end of the season,
said head coach Kyle Larson.
He expects his team to be a tough
bunch to play against and to build off
of the boys that are coming from the
Junior High level.
My expectations this year are to see
the boys continue to improve and build
on some of the success that was started last year at the Junior High level. A
number of our Grade 10 players come
to us with a love and enthusiasm for
the game and we want to ensure that
they continue to work hard and push
themselves to become better players,
said Larson.
My expectation is that we will be
consistently recognized as a hardworking tough team to play against.
The work ethic of the boys will be
their strength, and combining that with
athleticism will improve their growth
as players.
Our team has lots of room to improve and grow, our athleticism is
certainly one of our strengths and if
we can just mold that athleticism into
good basketball players we will be in
good shape, said Larson.

The improvements that can be made

are the basic skills that will take some
time to adjust to throughout the season.
We need to improve our fundamentals still and have to grow as a team,
our effort will take us a long ways but
we really need to practice our ball handling and shooting, said Larson.
The boys will be in Ponoka for tournament this weekend before hosting
the Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks (5:30
p.m.) in an exhibition match on Dec.
15 at Strathmore High School.

advise drivers can expect to see increased officer presence on roadways for the Christmas/New Years Check
Stop program. The RCMP plan to increase visibility,
education and enforcement in an effort to reduce the

High Risk Drivers IMPAIRED DRIVING, they will also
be watching for those speeding, using cellphones or not
wearing seatbelts.

Savanah Sandri is hoping to one day
be a part of the Olympics for equestrian
show jumping. The 13-year-old is selling calendars to help with her upcoming
show in California, which she is hoping
will help pave the way for her Olympic
dream.
With Chili (my horse) were going to
try to earn points by winning the competitions to go towards the Olympics, said
Sandri.
Im trying to get to the Olympics and

the points that go towards it, if I get

enough points then I qualify to go to Alberta and then if I qualify from Alberta I
go into the Olympics.
Sandri has only been show jumping for
a year, and over the last few months began training with Frank Selinger, who is
well known in the show jumping world.
In 1975 he won bronze medal at the Pan
American games, and for the following three years he competed at Spruce
Meadows on Canadas Cup teams.
Over the past year Sandri has been
working on her jumps, and trying to
put tips and advice from her trainer into
practice.
I do have a lot of bad habits that I am
working on getting better since I have
been with (Selinger). I have only been
with him three months and the second
month I was with him I went to Spruce
Meadows and I got fifth place, so I was
really proud of that because I had only
been on that horse for a month, said
Sandri,
My goal in this entire thing is to get to
the full Olympics, the youth Olympics. I
love show jumping so much that I just
want to represent Canada.
Sandri has begun collecting points a
few years before the event to try to ensure she comes out on top when its time
to compete in Alberta.
On Dec. 6 she was selling her calendars at Assist Business Centre, who
sponsored the calendars.
We think contributing to the community and the youth is important. Savanahs calendars were something we
could help with and an easy way to be
involved. While it isnt always feasible
for us to assist when asked, we had
some room left in our budget for 2014,
said Grace Schouten, owner of Assist
Business.
Sandri has a goal of selling 400 calendars.

Braves want committed

team efforts
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Despite being near the top of the
standings, Wheatland Braves head
coach Keith Klemmensen is not satisfied after the teams 6-1 win over the
Bow Valley Timberwolves on Dec. 5 at
home.
They get ideas that they think
theyve accomplished something. They
havent perfected or really been good
at anything on the front end yet consistently, said Klemmensen.
He admits his team has worked together at times during the game but
are inconsistent in other parts.
At times you see it, its a funny
group because sometimes they do a
real team thing and the second you pat
them on the back, they just go back
to being selfish and about themselves.
Its going to inhibit what theyre going
to be able to accomplish, said Klemmensen.
If they trust each other to be able
to execute whats going on out there,
theyll be fine because everybodys
improving when they trust each other
but if they dont it looks like the Keystone cops out there.
The learning curve for the team right
now is that they can beat teams on
any given night but also can be beaten
with their inconsistent play.
Mo Hakim led the way with three
goals while Tristan Zandee, Kyle
Crnkovic and Tegan Skehar added one
each.
In Okotoks on Saturday night, the

team provided put on offensive clinic

with a 12-1 pounding of the Okotoks
Oilers Black.
Crnkovic was a one-man show with
nine goals, while Zandee had two and
Kyle Bray had one.
The local peewee double-A team
plays the Lethbridge Hurricanes (6

CHIEFS ON FIRE!
The Wheatland Chiefs continued
their winning ways by thumping the
Lethbridge Hurricanes 9-1 at the Hussar Arena on Dec. 5.
Matt Halkovic and Jayden Smith
led the charge with two goals apiece.
Grady Strath, Kyle Rosolowski, Alix Biletsky, Chris Rebeyka and Jayse Wilson
also tallied for Wheatland.
The Chiefs suffered their second loss
of the season on Sunday, when they
fell 4-2 in Red Deer. Jayden Smith and
Grady Strath scored in the loss.
The local midget double-A team will
host the CNHA Blazers (7:30 p.m.) on
Dec. 12 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
WARRIORS READY
The Wheatland Warriors were idle
but will resume play, on Dec .12 when
they faceoff against the Medicine Hat

Donated equipment benefits Wheatland region

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
Standard School received $200,000
worth of donated gym equipment from
Apple Fitness that will be used by the
students and residents of East Wheatland County.
The plan is to keep students, staff
and residents of Wheatland County active while having a fitness centre close
to home.
We struck a deal with Apple Fitness, which basically when they go
in to replace old equipment, theyll
donate that back to schools. Weve
gotten since last September $200,000
additional equipment donated and
purchased to us, said Standard School
assistant Principal Greg Lendvay.
This year were up to 21 pieces of
cardio equipment because thats what
the students are into. Theyve all got
iPod connectors, so the students are
environmentally
friendly, actually
charging their phones while theyre
working out, said Lendvay.
The long-term plan of the gym setup is to have a virtual trainer on the
equipment rather than having a professional trainer come in.
The future is virtual trainer type of

things especially in a rural location as

opposed to having a physical trainer.
We do have a training process, all of
our kids from Grade 7 to 12 are incorporating it into their classes, said
Lendvay.
We have the addition of two new
high school fitness credit classes,
which is new to the school that weve
never had before. Were looking to establish some partnerships with Alberta
Health Services with our K-12 Wellness
initiative and offer community and
school based services that we can collaborate on.
Standard Mayor, Alan Larsen, is looking to engage and promote fitness to
Standard and the rest of the county by
making the gym available to the public.
Im looking at Jan. 1, 2015, right
now I have a list of about 10 people
who have already contacted me and
are interested in using the facility, and
still open for more people, said Larsen. Between Greg and myself I think
well try and streamline this so that it
can work for almost anybody in the
community. Well have some rules that
will have to be followed like were not
going to let people work out on their
own, said Larsen.

Students from Standard School show off some of the $200,000 worth of gym equipment that was
donated to the school by Apple Fitness.
Justin Seward Photo

The target age group for the facility

is for all students and some enhanced
programs will be put in place for those
who play other sports.
Were looking at some high performance training for some of the students that play hockey and ringette on
specialized teams or targeting some of
the obesity thats becoming more of a
problem in society, said Lendvay.
The feedback has been really positive and will help the schools case
for a new fitness facility once the new

school is built.
Were getting a lot of student feedback that is very positive and supportive. I think with this amount of equipment, what were building is a case for
we need a new fitness facility in the
new school moving forward that actually supports the entire region, said
Lendvay.
If you have any questions, you can
contact Alan Larsen at 403-901-6411 or
Greg Lendvay at Standard School 403644-3791.

Senior Hawks learn early lesson

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior boys
basketball team learned a valuable lesson in their
season opening defeat to Strathcona-Tweedsmuir
of Okotoks 72-42 on Dec. 3.
The Hawks started well, playing as a team, but
could not sustain the same kind of consistency in
the second half as players started to do too much
themselves.
When they played as a unit of five, they did
quite well. We were down as much as 12 to 15
points, we came back to be within five and then
we stopped playing that team game, said coach
Tony Hamilton.
The larger margin of defeat was a concern because the Hawks were not able to create enough

on their inside game to put up points.

The issue is when you have two elements to
any offence, youve got your outside game and inside game, and we stopped using our inside game.
We had success with it, but stopped using it out
on the floor and when you do that, then you shut
off a couple people on your team and it makes it
more difficult to stay in a game, said Hamilton.
No two players will ever win a game, especially
if the ball isnt going in the basket when theyre
shooting it. Thats what we talked about at practice, working like a machine that has five parts
and when youre working together and using all
the parts, it goes much better.
Hamilton added that this will be a learning
curve for the team and hopes the results will be
better when they go to Banff for a tournament
over the weekend.

Holy Cross Collegiate senior Hawk Josh Hauck eyes the upcoming free
throw from the Strathcona-Tweedsmuir player during the home opener on
Dec. 3 at Holy Cross Collegiate. The Hawks ultimately lost 72-42.

Cougars solid in Early Bird tournament

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Crowther Memorial Junior High
School Cougars boys and girls basketball teams held their Early Bird home
tournaments on Dec. 6.
Both teams played really well and
showed strong work ethics considering it was their first competition of the
season.
Girls coach Scott Koller was really
thrilled to see his team bond as well as
they did on the court.
Our team bonded well and we are
starting to trust each other, said Koller.
The girls did really well, they were a
little nervous for the first game but the
last two games, they played much better.
The girls will have lots of work to
do as the season goes along but their
strong point will be the offence.
There are always things that need
to be worked on. When we really start
to run our offence it will be hard for
other teams to stop us from scoring,
said Koller.
He expects to have players that work
hard in every game.
I expect to have a group of girls that
will work their hardest and challenge
every team that we play. My goals are
to play as a team and work harder than
everyone else, said Koller. Our whole
season will hinge on our ability to have
five girls play as one.
Boys head coach Matthew Laslo
thought his team played well in the
tournament and felt that this was a

start of good things to come.

It went relatively well, we tried to
give everyone lots of minute on the
floor, so everyone played a lot, and we
got better as the tournament went on,
said Laslo.
There were many positives to take
out of the tournament and the effort
showed in the teams performance.
When we want to, we play really
well as a team. When we are passing
the ball, running the floor and working hard on defense, we can be a really
great team, said Laslo.
The boys will have a shorter team
height this year, so strong rebounding
will be key.
Rebounding is really the most important aspect of the game, as it allows
your team to get a few extra shots, and
prevents the opposition from getting
extra shots. Were a little shorter this
year, so rebounding is really going to
have to be a whole team effort, said
Laslo.
There are players on the team that
have played different levels of basketball and will be called upon to provide
leadership.
We have a lot of players who have
played a lot of basketball at various levels, so experience will be a strength. As
well, we have a lot of players that want
to work hard and get better, which is
always great at this level, said Laslo.
The goal this year is to have everyone
by the end of the season playing great
team basketball. If were all out there
playing for each other, we should be
able to win some tournaments.
