Dear Sir or Madam:

I am applying to your Erasmus Mundus Master program of "Nanoscience and

Nanotechnology" with specialization in "Nanoelectronics" starting in September 2012.I wish
in particular to be trained at an advanced level in various applied Nano electronics fields. My
ultimate goal is to become an expert researcher in molecular electronics. I believe that
advanced training in a graduate program of good quality will help me to realize my dream.
Having enjoyed doing physics and mathematics right from high school, I succeeded in the
engineering entrance examinations and established myself as one amongst the top students
of the nation and continued my academic career with the study of "Electronics and
communication engineering" at Kumaun university Nainital. In June 2009 I graduated with a
Bachelor of engineering degree,First Class. In the pursuit of knowledge , I have always
adopted a rigorous approach in order to attain an in-depth understanding of the subject at
hand. This has amply reflected in my consistent academic career, always coming in top
students in my class and having won merit Scholarship and several awards.
During my undergraduate years I was fascinated to subjects Microprocessor design,Analog
and digital electronics,VLSI design and computer architecture. I did many projects using
Microcontrollers,CPLD,FPGA and NI Lab View. Besides courses listed on my transcript, I did
a lot of experiments related to these courses. My major project in undergraduate study
proposed an adaptive traffic system with which would make travel convenient and safe. Due
to my comprehensive specialized knowledge, I was appointed as the team leader. My duty
was to implement the data communication between RF transmitter and receiver using
hamming code. The project was adjudged the best project in college and later it was
published in ICCAE 2010 Singapore an IEEE sponsored conference.
My first exposure to the Nano technology was with the courses semiconductor physics and
VLSI in my undergraduate study. As the semiconductor technology is advancing in such a
rapid pace today we have reached at the molecular level. But despite of the advances in
technology, there remains much to learn and a lot to research. After having a decent industry
experience I am well acquainted with the fascinating field of Nano electronics. I want to study
at your university and focus on Molecular scale electronics because that allows me to
combine my interests in learning more about applied Nano electronics as well as
investigating new device models. I wish to delve deeper into the subjects to be able to carry
out independent research and analysis and to follow it up with a PhD or serve in a research
institution
It was my passion for semiconductor research and microelectronics that brought me in the
prestigious research company in the world "IBM" as a research engineer . I've been working
here for two years in its microelectronics division Bangalore. I've worked here on back end
physical design and methodology development for physical design tools. I had the
opportunity to learn various IBM EDA tools and various other industry tools such as chip
edit, chip bench einstimer, Booldozer,ModelSim, Synopsys-VCS, Xilinx ISE, Design compiler
etc. Currently I am team lead for the technology enablement team here in India and am
responsible to develop methodology for power routing at 22nm and 14 nm technologies. My
hard work and innovation paved the way and I stood among top performer of the year in
2010-11.
My passion for Nano electronics is not limited to my research work at IBM. I am fortunate to
have an exciting opportunity to be part of no. 1 Indian research institute "Indian Institute of
Science" Bangalore. I've joined the proficiency course "physics of micro fabrication and
nanotechnology". This course includes study of physical phenomena in microscopy and
fabrication process, electron optics and interaction, physical properties of NEMs & MEMs
devices and lab work as well. I regularly meet my fellow researchers and professor from

whom I learn much about insight in Nano electronics and its applications. Moreover, this
course is an excellent preparation for your program and an important milestone in my young
career. I am a freelance electronics hobbyist as well,in my spare time I usually make small
projects using FPGA and micro controllers.
Being an enthusiastic student who likes to take up challenges, the Erasmundus Mundus
masters program is an optimum course as it will equip me with the right skill sets to step into
the exciting domain of Nano electroniocs. Obtaining admission to this program, jointly
offered by Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Technische Universitt Dresden (where I am
applying for my 2nd year study), both leading academic institutions with a global repute for
research, will provide me with the perfect opportunity to convert passion into profession.
From speaking with students and professors from your university and other universities, I am
confident of my decision. With many distinguished scientists as professors, I know that I will
gain expert knowledge at the forefront of discovery. It will provide me with the incentive,
experience and proficiency to develop myself into a successful proponent of a subject which
has abundant potential.
Given my past history of commitment to excellence, I am confident that I will bring a high
level of energy and enthusiasm to your program. I will enrich the program by enabling fellow
students and professors to benefit from my ambitious and open nature. Furthermore, my
international background and vast working experience will add more diversity to your
program.
Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to your acceptance.
Sincerely yours,

I have been working for one of a leading software outsourcing company (IFI solution) in my
country -Vietnam- for more than 2 years. It offers me opportunities to work with partners and
customers from various nations such as England, China and Italy. One of my senior Italian
managers really impressed me because she was capable of detect potential issues and
tackle problems even she did not fully comprehend the relevant technical field. I realize that
being successful in industry does require not only the insight into technical background but
also the other skills, including managerial ones. This realization has urged me into action to
come up with a master plan for my career development by applying for Erasmus Mundus
scholarship in International master of industrial management (IMIM). I believe that this
program will equip me with the essential skills to pursue my personal career and also
contribute to my country's technology, which has much un-awakened potential.
I always have been attracted by scientific and technique matters since I was a child.
Especially, I have much interest in robot when I read about it in the first time. "Doraemon",
which is a famous manga in Asia, inspired me to pursue automation career in future. In this
book, I could see many magical things such as people can go anywhere they want just by a
door or a take-copter can help us flying like a bird...However, I think the biggest miracle in
this book is the cat robot "Doraemon". This robot is not only operate as human but also able
to think. When I grew up, I realized that all these things are fictions but I believe that human
can make these come true with the power of science in someday. It motivates me to select
the major Industrial Automation in Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Hanoi University of
Technology (HUT), the best University of Technology in Vietnam for my under-graduate
study, as well as to spend my life career with automation. Studying in HUT, the more I learn
and research, the more I love to discover mysteries of controlling. Knowledge seems to be
never enough so that I decided to study for higher education by enrolling on a graduate
program at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). Consequently,
I was accepted and granted with the scholarship for 2 years to follow the English speaking
master program in NTUST.
I understood that basic academic subject such as mathematics and physics are essential in
shaping my background in future major. Therefore, when I started to study at university, I
always tried to equip myself with a solid background of these subjects. In fact, I have learnt
mathematics in classes for gifted pupils of mathematics since junior high school. During high
school, I was in informatics mathematic specialized class of Chu Van An high school, which
is one of the oldest and most famous schools in Viet Nam. I often was selected to attend
mathematics contest among schools in Hanoi as well. Learning mathematics provides me
with strong ability of adapting to undergraduate program immediately.
By 2009, I conducted a research on another field of robotics - Simultaneous Localization and
Mapping (SLAM) during my time at NTUST. This field is considered as the initial step to
make robot fully autonomous since it answered the fundamental questions: What does the
world look like and where am I? SLAM is, therefore, defined as the problem of building a
map without prior knowledge; while at the same time determine the location within that map.
By using the robot equipped with an omnidirectional camera and laser range finder, a 3-D
color map of the real indoor environment could be produced while the robot position also
was kept tracking with good accuracy. As the result, my work was submitted and accepted to
appear on to 43rd International Symposium on Robotics, 2012 under the title as "3D Model
Reconstruction of Corridor Environment by Data fusion of Laser range finder and
Omnidirectional Camera".
In 2011, I came back to Vietnam and begun to work for IFI solution until now. This is a really
big challenge because I must work in the area of telecommunication, which is new to my
knowledge. After two months of training, I was assigned as the leader of system verification
team which are responsible for evaluating the software quality embed in Base station
controller, base transceiver station and other entities of telecom system. As the result, this
job provides me with practical experiences in term of management skills. In fact, being a
leader, I need to come up with plan for testing and supervise team members to acquire the
target in timely fashion. However, there are still many rooms for me to improve myself,
including quality management. Therefore, the Master's program offered by a consortium of

accredited European universities (The Technical University of Madrid, The Politecnico di

Milano and Heriot-Watt University) would give me a precious chance to obtain the remaining
essential skills for me to pursue my career. Furthermore, thanks to living in different cultures
and studying at different learning environments, the program will enable me to learn more
about European cultures, making friendship and professional relations with excellent
students or enterprises in industries, not only from Europe but also from all the corners of the
world. From my perspective, these kinds of connection, within classes, between current
students and alumni, among alumni, and between alumni and industries serve as a very
helpful channel for the exchange of viewpoints, knowledge and experience sharing,
consultancy and cooperation in large-scale projects. Being part of this network will be very
valuable to my future work.
Nowadays, we are living in a dramatically globalizing world and outsourcing is one of the
fundamental manifestations of the globalization. It is considered as a crucial mean for
organizations to reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction, and improve their competitive
advantages, thus enhance the overall performance in supply chain. Despite its benefits,
outsourcing is also required strong management skills; especially it creates risks that should
be managed properly to fully beneficial for organizations. In 2005, a Basel committee or
banking supervision's Outsourcing in Financial Services provide guidance which is often
recommended to management to perform risk assessment of outsourced service providers.
Whether the risks are adequately considered or not is an opening question. In my future
research, I want to investigate such risk assessment process and develop risk reduction
mechanisms to tackle a given risk or risk areas. By bringing an independent view and a
broad understanding of the outsourcing relationship, I believe this research can help
organization manage risks related to such arrangement.
In conclusion, I would like to reassert that IMIM from Erasmus Mundus Program is a real
milestone in both of my education and career. There are definitely challenges awaited but I
strongly believe that I will overcome any obstacle through my well-prepared background and
my will power. I am very much obliged if you give me the privilege of pursuing this master's
program in your reputable schools.

I am James Smith, the 3rd year student of XXXX University of Power Engineering and
Telecommunications.
I have always been thinking about my future, building a career, becoming a successful person
and generally finding my own path in the life.
Almost all my family including my uncles, aunts and cousins have their jobs which somehow
connected to the field of technology. I have grown among intelligent people and it had great
influence on the development of my personality so since early childhood I have learnt the
importance of education.
My school teachers always noted that I had good abilities in such subjects as mathematics and
physics. This increased my interest in exact sciences, and I decided to connect my future career
with technological area of activity, wishing to gain success in the future. And if I become
successful I will pay back my parents for their warmth and loving tender, as they have been
those who have been supporting me throughout my life.
For that reason I constructed a plan for achieving this long-term aim. By the plan I accomplished
some small objectives: graduated from school in the number of the best students and won a
scholarship to study in XXXX University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications. This
year I am going to graduate from the university, and plan to enter one of the best universities of
the world for my Masters degree. As it was before I started to find one with an opportunity to win
a scholarship. I spent much time searching, and at last I chose the XXXX University among other
universities of the Netherlands.
The first acquaintance with your university began from collecting particular information about it.
From the data I had found I managed to make some basic picture explaining why I chose it.
XXXX University is the biggest innovative centre which takes active part in the field of
fundamental and applied sciences. Furthermore, the research investigations of students and
scientists make a great contribution to the development of high technologies in and outside the
Netherlands. In addition to investigative work the university keeps on stimulating entrepreneurial
abilities in its students. It favoured the establishment of more than 600 thousand industrial
companies which successively function on the basis of mutually beneficial collaboration with
students and research personnel of XXXX University. Furthermore, I was astonished reading
about implementations which are conducted there. For example, the development of virtual
satellite dish or microchip with a solar cell which does not need batteries. All the articles about
achievements of the university let me conclude that XXXX University is the most suitable
institution to realize my potential.
As far as my pertinent work experience is concerned, I would like to mention that last summer I
was undergoing training in local telecommunication company for 5 weeks. This company devotes
itself to providing wireless broadband Internet access to its customers. As a trainee I had many
duties starting from reconfiguring equipment and finishing by arriving to a certain client to set up

a network. During the training I managed to acquire some specific skills, for example, how to
organize conduit in different kinds of buildings or how exactly a cable laying is implemented.
Likewise, I got to know the structure of telecommunication agency. In addition, I learnt the
principles of team work and improved my communicative abilities. As a result, after completion of
the training I was given a qualification of assistant engineer.
As regards my interests, I am glad to say that I am not a person who is only engaged in studies. I
have dozens of activities which I like to do. Generally, I would like to note that I have always kept
healthy lifestyle. I was taught that it is much better to struggle with your sicknesses by developing
your health rather than taking drugs infinitely. All these clearly define my high interest in keeping
healthy lifestyle that is reflected in my big love of sport. For instance, I am a real football fan
which means that I enjoy playing and watching it. Thus I always try to find some time to go out
and play such a wonderful game with my friends. What is more, the fact that football is the most
famous sport in the Netherlands so there are plenty of professional football clubs which are
recognized worldwide is another plus for entering your university. In addition, I also like such
kinds of sports that upgrade strength, stamina, reaction and flexibility. That is why the list of my
favourite sports is very wide including not only football, but also basketball, swimming, longdistance jogging, sprint, table tennis and recently I have found myself in martial arts especially
Boxing and different kinds of wrestling. Finally, I cannot forget that reading books is another
passion of mine. Thus, most of all I prefer science fiction, fantasy and detective novels as my
favourite genres.
With respect to my future career, as I mentioned before the fact, that XXXX University links its
activity with investigative work and at the same time develop entrepreneurial skills of its students,
is a fundamental reason of why I desire to study exactly here. The question is that our nation is
lack of highly qualified specialists in the field of telecommunication. What is more, as user I am
not satisfied with the level of provision of different telecommunication services that are also very
expensive and I am sure that I am not the only one who supposes so. I believe that our country
has much more potential; therefore, as a true patriot, I wish to contribute to the development of
the national telecommunication. In other words, if I gain the Masters degree in your university
then I am going to return back to my homeland to make efforts to establish my own
telecommunication company for the purpose of providing telecommunication of a high quality at a
reasonable price. To implement such goal I need to improve my leadership qualities and acquire
special knowledge in chosen field of education, which will be possible if I join XXXX University.
In conclusion, I would like to say that if I become a student of your university, I promise to be a
worthy member of the team.
Thank you very much for considering my application. I look forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
James Smith

My name is Ivan Petrov, I am a 19 years old. I was born in Barnaul, Altay region, Russia and
later lived in Kazakhstan. When I was 4 years old my family moved to Kaliningrad, Russia, where
I am still living. In the age of 5 I was enrolled in Kaliningrad Lyceum #18. In 2005 Ive finished the
lyceum with physics-mathematics specialization. My average school graduation mark is 4.4 (5.0
is maximum possible). I was accepted to Russian State Immanuel Kant Universitys
mathematical faculty the same year. Ive chosen Applied Mathematics and Computer Science
specialization, as it conformed to my interests in programming and computer security most of all.
My choice of specialization was greatly influenced by my fathers profession (hes a systems
administrator, running his own business) and the computer boom, experienced in Russia.
Right now I am a 4th year, high achiever student of Russian State I. Kant University and will be
graduating next year. Upon graduation I will receive a Specialist degree, which is not recognized
by foreign universities due to differences in my countrys educational system. But I want to
continue my education in one of European universities.
Classical Russian education has its advantages and disadvantages, compared to European.
Russian education is very broad and thorough. But this also means that it is very hard or
sometimes impossible to concentrate on some particular interesting topic and become a
professional in the chosen area. I believe that European education, focused on practical usage
and development of skills required by employers, is more competitive in this situation.
Dutch universities provide European education and are focused on practical side of things. They
are also known world-wide for their international education. And this is great, because this allows
to study in an international environment, to meet people from around the world, who came to
study just like you and to exchange experience and ideas with these people, to learn and
understand from inside differences, weaknesses and keys of success of IT companies worldwide, to get knowledge, skills and education, which is actually competitive in conditions of
globalization.
I believe that enrollment to MSc Computer Science program in University of XXX is a right step in
reaching my goal of becoming a good IT specialist. University of XXX is widely-known for its high
level of technical education and leading positions among Dutch technical universities and this is
why I have chosen this university and hope to be accepted to it.
Computer science is not just my future profession, it is also my main hobby and I see no
profession for me, other than one related to Computer Sciences. This also makes me a good
candidate for enrollment as studying computer science and related sciences is an integral part of
my hobby.
I have big plans for my future career. Obtaining a quality of master of science from your
university will not only strengthen my knowledge in the field to cope up with the fast
advancement in the technology but will also help me to in my plans of extending my fathers IT
outsourcing business after I finish my education. We are planning to drive family business to a

new level by creating a number of new departments. I am sure that Dutch technical education will
help me in accomplish my plans and choose right strategies and goals for this.
I also find scientific and research work very interesting and attractive. I find mathematics
interesting and beautiful in a way. And dedicate a lot of time to self-education mainly in
mathematics and computer science. This allowed me to write a research paper, which is now in a
process of publication. I am thinking about connecting my future life to science one way or
another. And I hope to combine scientific work with my main job or to make scientific work my
main job.
Russia may seem to a mature country, but I believe that it still has a lot to change in order to
become one. My countrys main source of income is trade of natural resources like oil and gaz.
And Hi-Tech, scientific research, educational and small business spheres remain undeveloped. I
am confident, that if I get a chance to earn master degree in your University, then I will be able to
contribute a lot to my countrys development of at least some listed spheres.
I get on with people well, am responsible and have good problem solving skills. I have only
excellent marks for all years of education. I am captain of a leading regions ACM programming
team, an organizer of a student programming club. I am a holder of President of Russia
Scholarship (only two scholarships are given per university). I know 3 foreign languages.
With my strong academic background and desire to study, I am confident that I am qualified and
able to perform well in this program. I also believe that I can make significant contribution to this
program.
Thank you very much for considering my application. I look forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
Ivan Petrov.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to submit my name and credentials for consideration for the Business Administration:
Specialization in Transport & Supply Chain Management program in XXXX University.
I have graduated from Makarov State Maritime Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia from which I
received a BCA diploma with honors with the qualification of Engineer on Transport Organization
and Management specializing in organization of transportation and transport management
(water transport) in the year 2006. Moreover, as you can see in my CV I have had extensive
experience working for the Japanese ocean container carrier, NYK Line, for six years.
I chose the shipping industry for my future profession as I have always been interested in the
sea. My fascination with the sea came from my father, who is a sailor and also a teacher of
navigation.
My study at the academy, together with classes related to logistics and transport management,
gave me a particular enjoyment of English classes. These classes have helped me greatly to
expand my boundaries in learning enabling me to understand some subjects in both Russian and
English languages.
As a cadet I also worked part time as a trainee in a shipping company, Rusmarine, which was an
agent of the NYK Line in St. Petersburg, Russia. Later the NYK Line established its own
representative office in the country. Once I graduated from the academy, I passed the job
interview and was invited to work in the company. A career with NYK gave me great job
satisfaction and provided me with opportunities for personal development. At this time in my life, I
desire more of a challenge and would very much appreciate the opportunity to study at VU
Amsterdam University.
In my extensive travels throughout Europe, I one day realized that I would like to study abroad,
gain new knowledge and new life experience, learn other cultures, and meet people from other
countries. I believe that the Netherlands is the best place for studying logistics as it is a great
shipping and logistics world center. Also, I was delighted to discover that your university is
located in one of my favorite cities, Amsterdam. I believe the Transport & Supply Chain
Management program provided by the university is an excellent one for me to consider for the
furtherance of my education. I would like very much to be able to learn new things, experience
new educational methods and programs, and to grow as a student and as a person.
Concerning my personality, I believe I am a very responsible individual who loves to learn new
things in life and to seek new experiences. I enjoy observing the people around me and meeting
others with understanding and respect. Working for NYK I had opportunities to contact people
around the world making some good friends in Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the USA. Making
friends is one of my greatest abilities. I have a passion for photography, and I enjoy browsing
photo exhibitions even more than taking photos myself. Also, I like reading Russian, English, and
American literature. Moreover, I regularly attend performances of Russian theatre, such as The

European Theater of Drama and others. I have a wonderful family and love spending time with
them. They support me very much and do their best to encourage me to take new steps in life.
I would very much like to have an opportunity to study at XXXX University and to demonstrate
my skills, experience, and ideas.
Kindest regards,
XXXX

Dear Sir/Madam,

With this letter I hereby would like to express my motivation for a PhD programme in Linguistics and
English Language offered by the University of Edinburgh.

With a major in literary studies as an undergraduate, and Master in Linguistics I would now like to
concentrate on English literature. I am particularly interested in twentieth-century literature, womens
literature, US poetry, and folklore. My personal literary projects have involved some combination of
these subjects. Moreover, for the oral section of my comprehensive exams, I specialized in twentieth
century novels by and about women. The relationship between high and folk literature became the
subject for my honors essay on (Give brief description) and I plan to work further on this essay by
preparing a paper suitable for publication.

In my studies toward a PhD degree, I wish to examine more closely the relationship between high and
folk literature. My junior year and private studies of English language and literature have caused me
to consider the question of where the divisions between folklore, folk literature, and high literature lie.
Should I attend your school, I would like to resume my studies of English poetry, with specialization in
its folk elements.

Writing poetry plays prominent role in my career goals. I have just begun submitting to the smaller
journals with some success and am steadily building a working manuscript for a collection. The
dominant theme of this collection relies on poems that draw from classical, biblical, and folk traditions,
as well as everyday experience, in order to celebrate the process of giving and taking life, whether
literal or figurative. My poetry is based and influenced by my academic studies, since much of what I
read and studied found a place in my creative work as subject. At the same time, I study the art of
literature by taking part in the creative process, experimenting with the tools used by other authors in
the past.

In a few years, I see myself teaching literature and going into editing or publishing poetry. PhD
program offered by your Institution would be valuable to me in several ways. First, your teaching
assistantship program would provide me with the practical teaching experience I am eager to acquire.
Further, earning a Ph.D. in Linguistics & English Language would support my other two career goals
by adding to my skills, both critical and creative, in working with language. Ultimately, however, I see
the Ph.D. as an end in itself, as well as a professional milestone; I enjoy studying literature for its own
sake and would like to continue my studies on the level demanded by the Ph.D. program.

To my knowledge, this program is very competitive, attracting highly motivated students, but I am
convinced that my good academic record and my motivation make me a strong recommendation for a
place at it. I would be honored if you decide to accept my candidateship to be Ph. D. student at the
University of Edinburgh

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours,

strive for positive changes in our society. I am sure all changes we want in society have to start with
NGO and ourselves. I shall develop national programs, which could help to adjust long-term relations
among cultures and continents. This is my way, the way of a person who wants, for certain, to change
the fortune of Georgia and its inhabitants. I am a drop of my Georgian people and the fortune of all
the ocean depends on my personal experience, knowledge which I can and want to pass the other
people.

In conclusion, I would like to say that I am eager to gain new experiences, improve my skills and
broaden my understanding of the dynamic economic world, and I am persuaded that studying in the
B.A. in Law program would contribute to my development as a specialist of international level in the
best possible way.

Thank you very much for considering my application.

Dear Sir or Madam:

With this letter, I would like to express my interest in studying at the University of XY as an Erasmus
student.
I am currently studying Masters Degree programme in Regional Geography at the ABC University in
London. Having looked through the materials of the Foreign Department of my university, I was very
delighted to find the opportunity to spend one semester learning geography at the University of XY. I
have decided to apply for this programme because I am sure it would strongly enrich my future
studies and help me in my prospective career. Moreover I consider this programme as a great
opportunity to get in touch with British culture and educational system. Last but not least, I am very
curious about different approaches to the geography at the foreign university.
I have chosen to apply for University of XY, because I really like its module system of study. I
specially appreciate the wide range of offered modules and the freedom in making your study plan.
Many of the modules offered are unique for me, because there is no equivalent at my home
university. Very important for me is also an Excellent rating for teaching of the Geography
department and the overall friendly atmosphere at both the university as well as the city. The third
main reason why I have chosen XY is its Urban and Regional Policy Research Institute. It specializes
in interdisciplinary research on key regional and urban policy issues, which is the field of geography
very familiar to me.
During my prior studies I have found out, that I would like to specialize in Urban and Transport
Geography. The University of XY gives me a chance to get in touch with these subjects through
modules from both Department of Geography and Department of Town and Regional Planning. In my
last year at the ABC University I worked on an empirical study with main focus on transportation costs
of suburbanisation and urban sprawl. I really liked my project and I am keen to continue in it. I would
like to use my stay in XY for further developing my skills in empirical research and starting working on
my diploma project. The possibilities that gives me University of XY further expand those at my home
university. I would take modules focusing on Transport and Urban geography and European Studies.
I would very much like to spend one semester at the University of XY. This would give me a chance to
deepen my geographical knowledge in the inspiring, creative, and cosmopolite environment of one of
the largest British universities. Furthermore I could improve my English and increase my confidence in
passing the TOEFL examinations after I return. Moreover, I am confident that my experience in
London would be extremely exciting, fun, and valuable for both my studies and overall general
development.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response.
Yours
Suzan Parent

faithfully,

Do your homework
Before starting on your motivation letter it is best you find out as much as possible about the university that is
offering the Masters programme and about the program itself. Usually the universities' website is pretty clear and
informative about their requirements, expectations and about what qualifications and qualities they hope their
candidates have. Knowing a little bit about their requirements, about their main projects, activities personal
philosophy and interests will help you get an idea on what your letter should contain. Relating with the main

Ideas and main points

Start with writing down some of the main ideas , important points you would like to approach in your letter and
later build around them, enrich their content; an example would be :
1.
2.

Make your goal clear; provide a short preview of the rest of the letter;
Why do you think that the university and the Masters program are interesting and suitable for you? ;

3.

Focus on some of your strongest qualifications, past experiences (international experiences are always
relevant) and qualities; organize the middle paragraphs in terms of the qualifications most relevant for the

4.

program, you can also refer to your CV for more details;

Conclude by restating your interest and show appreciation for the chance to prove yourself in the letter (in
some cases you can ask for a personal interview).

Personal & Original

Give your readers some insight into you as an individual. Remember this is a very personal document in which
you are expected to prove that you are different from the rest of the applicants and that your qualities, skills and
qualifications make you suitable for participating in the program. Although it might be sometimes helpful to have
other examples, do not copy other letters you have seen and try to be original, it will help a lot! Also avoid
bragging too much about yourself. You are not expected to present yourself as a superhero but rather be
objective and realistic.

First impression
Whether it is the way your letter looks, the way it is organized and structured in paragraphs, the font size , the
length of the letter or even the first paragraph, first impression always counts!
Be professional and consistent
Present your letter in a professional format, style and grammar. Have it checked for spelling mistakes and be
consistent (e.g. use the same font, the same abbreviations throughout the letter etc.).

Other opinions and advice

It is always a good idea to ask your friends, a teacher or someone who has already done such an application for
advice. Usually you can get in touch with students who are already doing the Masters programme you are
applying for and they can give good advice not only on what to include in your motivation letter. However, as
already stated before remember to be original and avoid copying other letters!
All these presented key points can prove effective and help you write successful motivation letters but in the end
your personal touch and knowledge is what matters and makes the difference. A good motivation letter will
always be successful if the applicant is really interested and willing to get the desired place in the Masters

program of his/her choice. What you really need is to trust in yourself and try it and if you are not successful the
first time keep on trying because you will for sure make it
