Hicksville Pressure Gets The Better Stripe Leads Potent Cadet Attack
Of Montpelier In Loco Loss
In Win Against North Central

(December 8th, 2014) MONTPELIER:

The Locomotives had difficulty picking up
steam agains the Aces of Hicksville when
the Green Meadows Conference opponent
came into town.
Running a constant full-court press,
the Aces were able to disrupt the Montpelier offense immensely in the Locomotive
loss. There were times in which the Locos
couldn't even get the ball down the court.
But the press was not the full extent of
the Hicksville defense's aggressiveness.
They were also shooting passing lanes
hard, producing a good many steals that
way as well. The Aces scored most of their
points running the floor after Montpelier
turnovers.
Montpelier struggled against this attacking defensive mentality from the first
quarter. They seemed to recover, however,
and ended the period down by just a 3
point margin at 13-10. The second and
third quarters were not kind to the Locomotives, though. Putting up just 5 and 9
points in the two periods, while Hicksville
was able to capitalize on the mistakes
they'd forced, producing 18 and 20 points
in that same span. The final stanza saw
the Aces call off the press, opting to play

a more conservative style of defense. Each

team scored 19 points.
When it was finally over, the scoreboard read 70-43, Hicksville.
One of the few bright spots of the contest for Montpelier was Michael Blake. The
sophomore standout offered 20 points to
the Locomotive cause, displaying a balanced game between his 5 two-point field
goals and 2 threes. Blake was also one
of the few Locomotive players to break
through the Hicksville press, though even
he had trouble doing so. Nate McCord and
Kyrin Schuman each contributed 6 points
in the loss. Jared Shoup scored 4 points
as well.
The Montpelier defense, when not
caught in transition, was fairly solid.
Hicksville was able to get some points in
the paint, but the Loco perimeter defense
was pretty good, allowing just a single
made three.
Ball handling and passing were issues
for the Locomotives, which was a bit of a
surprise from such a veteran squad. Going forward, they will have to do a better job of valuing the basketball, lest they
wish to fall victim to pressure defenses all
season.

(December 11th, 2014) WEST UNITY:

It was the performance of Erik Stripe that
made all the difference in the Cadets' big
win against rival North Central.
The 5'10 senior from Hilltop put up
28 points against their hated neighbors to
the north. That total was propelled by 4
successful three-point attempts, though
he was as deadly from inside the arc as
he was from the outside. Stripe was also
responsible for 2 steals, an assist, and a
rebound as well.
Jalen Towers added a normally impressive 19 points to the Cadet victory total,
also pulling down 10 boards to earn a double-double on the evening. Tim Maneval
contributed another 12 points to go along
with his 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.
In fact, all 8 players to see time for Hilltop
registered a field goal in the contest.
With all of this scoring, the Cadets were
able to pull away from a determined Eagles
team in the second half, winning the game
77-62.
It's not as though North Central had
issues scoring. Of the 6 players that received minutes in the contest, 5 of them
had double digit totals on the evening.
They were led by senior Jordan Bailey,
who scored 16 points against the Cadet
defense. Ethan Douglas, a junior, put up
12 points. Another senior, Jordan Reeves,
earned 11 points by driving the ball to the
basket. Fellow senior Josh Sawyer used
his 2 three-point field goals to pump his
production up to 10 points. Sophomore
Steven Williams also totaled 10 points.
Size was an issue for the Eagles. With

no player standing over 6 feet tall, the

guard-oriented team settled for too many
jump shots, particularly those from threepoint range. North Central shot for just
15% from beyond the arc, taking 20 attempts from long range. When they did
drive to the basket, the Eagle boys actually did pretty well, making 47% of their 32
shots from close and mid-range. The team
shot 34% from the floor overall.
Hilltop did most of their damage from
inside the arc, connecting on 57% of their
attempts from the enclosed area. When
they did shoot threes, however, they did
so quite well, putting 41% of their shots
through the bottom of the net. As a unit,
the Cadets made 53% of their total field
goals.
In an unusual statistic, the Eagles
turned the ball over significantly less than
their counterparts from Hilltop. North Central actually protected the ball extremely
well, committing just 8 turnovers. Hilltop
was a bit sloppy with the ball, making
18 possession-costing errors. Typically,
such a wide turnover margin leads to good
things for those who value the basketball.
Winning the rebounding war helped
rectify the Cadets' turnover woes, however.
Hilltop used their size to pull in 10 more
boards than the shorter Eagles team. With
36 rebounds to North Central's 26, the
hometown Cadets ensured that they were
getting the ball after most missed shots.
Size and depth had a strong impact on
this rivalry game. But it was the standout
playing of Erik Stripe that pushed Hilltop
out of North Central's reach.

effort.

Fayette Eagles Pull Away

Late To Defeat Stryker
(December 11th, 2014) FAYETTE:
The game was close until the final period of play, when Fayette closed out the
game.
The Stryker boys trailed throughout
the game, but stayed within 6 points at
the end of each of the first three quarters. Then the Eagles built some separation between the two squadrons, earning
a 50-38 victory against a strong Buckeye
Border Conference opponent.
At the conclusion of the opening stanza, Fayette had established a 16-10 lead.
The Panthers were able to reduce their
deficit to 4 by halftime, heading into the
locker room down 29-25. Little changed
in a low scoring third period. Going into
the fourth quarter, the Eagles enjoyed a
36-30 advantage. Then, Fayette was able

to expand their lead to 12 points before

the final buzzer sounded, winning the
game 50-38.
Parker Ruffer led the comeback efforts for the Panthers. He produced 14
points in the contest. Tanner Clingamen
added 11 more to the Stryker total. Brannan Woolace was responsible for 8 of the
team's points.
Fayette's scoring was a bit more balanced, as 4 of their 5 points producers
reached double digits. Wade Burkholder
scored 14 points to lead his team. Skylar
Lantz was close behind with 12 points.
Jared Seller and Koby Biddix each contributed 11 points to the Fayette cause.
Versatility in scoring production
played a key role in holding Stryker at
bay for Fayette.

A BIG NIGHT ... Hilltop senior Erik Stripe (20) uses a hook shot to score over North
Central defender Ethan Douglas (11). Stripe had a monstrous evening scoring the ball,
as he put up 28 points against the Eagles.

CONTINUATION OF VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION

Pettisville Blackbirds Win

At Home Against Edon
(December 11th, 2014) PETTISVILLE:
Going into the fourth quarter, the Blackbirds led the Bombers 48-25. Edon outscored Pettisville 12-6 in that final stanza,
making the final score a more respectable
54-37.
Josh Liechty put up 14 points, the
most by any Blackbird in the game. He
connected on both of his three-point attempts, and made 3 assists and 3 steals
as well. Caleb Rychener scored 6 points to
compliment his 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Meanwhile, Tate Kauffman, who led Pettisville in scoring in all of their previous
games this season, only had 3 points on
the evening, making 1 of his 3 three-point
shots.
Edon's Alex Kirkingburg also put up
14 points, successfully placing 1 of his
3 three-point attempts through the bottom of the net. Teammate Braden Miller
scored 8 points, making 2 three-pointers
of his own. Jim Peckham contributed 5
points to the Bomber effort.
Where Edon really stumbled was in the
turnover department. The Bomber boys
committed 19 such errors, nine of which
were steals by Pettisville. These turnovers not only take away from the offending team's chances to get a shot off, they

actually add opportunities to the other

team, too. In contrast, Pettisville limited
their own turnovers to 8.
Pettisville won the rebounding battle as well. The Blackbirds pulled in 27
boards. Edon, on the other hand, had 22
rebounds in the game.
The Blackbirds also shot a little better from the floor than Edon. While overall field goal percentages between the
two teams were similar, with the Bombers edging out Pettisville 45% to 44%, the
hometown Blackbirds were more accurate
from the three-point line. Pettisville hit on
50% of their long range shots, as opposed
to Edon's 41%.
But it was the number of shots put up
that makes those percentages have meaning. Edon shot the ball 31 times, while
Pettisville did so 49 times. So making a
similar percentage of shots to the Bombers actually netted the blackbirds significantly more points.
Both of these teams have struggled
early into the season, and both needed a
win in this game. Pettisville took the win,
and is hoping to springboard a successful Buckeye Border Conference campaign
from it. Edon, meanwhile, is still searching for that elusive first win.

Dominant Defense Earns Wauseon

Decisive Win Against Holgate
(December 11th, 2014) HOLGATE:
Traveling to take on Green Meadows Conference member Holgate, Wauseon looked
to represent the North Western Athletic
League with pride.
It turns out they also did it with defense.
The Tigers were held to just 2 points
in the entire first quarter, on their own
home floor. The Indians, during that same
span, put up 16 points. In the second period, Wauseon's offense slowed down, but
their defense continued to pound Holgate
into submission. Taking a 23-8 lead into
the half, the boys from Wauseon showed
off their defensive chops again in the third
quarter. They took the period by a 9-1
margin. Holgate finally managed to score
in double digits during the fourth quarter, but the game was well in hand for
Wauseon by then. The Indians claimed victory against the Tigers, 42-22.
Jacob Newlove led the offensive assault
for the Indians, scoring 11 points. The senior standout also had 3 rebounds and
2 steals in the game. Fellow senior Zach
Johnson was responsible for 8 points, also
grabbing 4 rebounds and making a block.
Both teams were careful with the bas-

ketball. Wauseon only committed 11 turnovers. Under normal circumstances, that

would be an impressive number. However,
Holgate limited their own turnovers to just
7. The fact that they turned the ball over so
few times and still lost by 20 displays just
how intense the Indian defense can be, as
the Tigers still had every chance to score
and simply failed to do so.
And that defense was responsible for
the hometown Tigers shooting a mere 13%
from the floor, including a shocking 11%
from inside the arc. The interior of the
Wauseon defense was so intimidating that
Holgate actually took more three-point attempts than they did two-point ones.
Wauseon out-rebounded Holgate, but
not by much. They won the battle of the
boards 31-26. Again, that the margin was
this close is not indicative of the final score.
The Indians won this game because
they didn't allow Holgate to make shots.
Those abysmal shooting percentages were
the direct result of defenders harassing Tiger shooters after not allowing their interior players to establish themselves.
If Wauseon continues to play defense at
this level, it's hard to imagine them getting
beat.

Antwerp Makes A Come

Home Victory Against Fairview Back To Beat Fayette Eagles
CONTINUATION OF VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION

A Complete One For Wauseon

(December 13th, 2014) WAUSEON:

Opening their gym to the Apaches,
Wauseon made sure the Fairview boys
stay on the Indians reservation would be a
memorable one.
Beating them by thirty probably did the
trick.
Making 44% of their field goals helped
set up the 66-36 victory for Wauseon.
Most of those points came from inside the
arc, with the Indians making 24 of their
48 attempts from that area. In particular,
senior Noah Castle was quite busy in the
paint, as 12 of his team-leading 15 points
came from there.
Fairview shot a respectable 37% from
the floor against an aggressive Wauseon
defense. That number becomes a bit less
impressive when it is taken into consideration that the Apaches managed to take 20
less shots than the Indians.
Most of Fairviews opportunities were
literally ripped from them. The Indian boys
had 14 steals in the game. Castle was
responsible for half of them, swiping the
ball from the Apaches 7 times. Jacob Newlove stole the ball a normally impressive 3
times as well.
All those steals, as well as general pressure put on them by Wauseon, led to a
high number of turnovers for the visitors
from Fairview. By the end of the game,
they had turned the ball over a grand total
of 22 times. While not great, the Indians
efforts to protect the ball were far better
than the Apaches. The hometown boys
from Wauseon only made 16 possessioncosting mistakes in the game.

Despite the convincing nature of the

victory, Wauseon did leave some opportunities untapped. Shooting just 53% from
the free throw line, the Indians only connected on 9 of their 17 attempts. The did
limit the Apaches trips to the free throw
line, however, minimizing the damage
their own poor shooting from the stripe
could produce. That may not have even
been necessary, though, as Fairview made
just 3 of their 11 shots from the line for an
abysmal 27% team average.
Newlove, a senior, had a strong evening
scoring the ball, offering 11 points to the
Indian cause. Yet another senior, Zach
Johnson put up 10 points. Carter Bzovi
added 9 points in the game as well.
Perhaps the most dominant stat of the
game, other than the score, was the rebounding margin. With a remarkably balanced performance, Wauseon pulled down
24 rebounds on each side of the floor for a
total of 48. A mere 7 offensive rebounds reduced Fairviews total to a mere 21 boards.
Castle once again led the Indians with 16
rebounds, including 10 on offense, giving
him a double-double against the Apaches.
Johnson reigned in 11 rebounds, putting
him at double-double status as well.
Wauseon defeated Fairview, not just on
the scoreboard, but in nearly every statistical category as well. Castle, Johnson,
and Newlove had a great deal to do with
that, as all three played a significant role
in the Apaches nightmare evening.
Perhaps Fairview will be a bit more cautious the next time they pay Wauseon a
visit.

(December 13th, 2014) FAYETTE: In

a crazy game that saw 10 lead changes,
the hometown Eagles of Fayette fell to the
visiting Archers of Antwerp, 41-39.
The Eagles established a solid lead in
the first two quarters of play. By the conclusion of the first period, they were up
13-8. Fayette was able to add a point to
the lead with a 10-9 scoring advantage in
the second quarter. In the third stanza,
Antwerp ended the quarter with 3 points
chipped off of the Fayette lead. The Archers then overcame their deficit entirely
with an 11-6 final period.
Wade Burkholder provided the Eagles
with 14 points, making 4 three-point field
goals. Alec Bost filled a variety of roles in

the game, scoring 6 points on 2 threepointers, while making 5 assists, stealing

the ball twice, and even blocking a shot.
Tristen Bates also produced 6 points, also
making a steal.
Fayette did a terrific job of taking care
of the basketball. They had but 6 turnovers for the entire game. Such precision
usually amounts to a victory.
The team also shot 47% from the floor,
though they only made a third of their free
throws. Also, they only took 6 attempts at
extra points in the contest.
Fayette and Antwerp were two evenly
matched teams, and this game could have
gone either way. It just happened to go in
the Archers' favor.

Montpelier JV Struggles To Hilltop JV Defeats Visitors

Find Points In Hicksville Loss
From North Central

(December 8th, 2014) MONTPELIER:

Inviting the Aces of Hicksville onto their
home court, the Montpelier Junior Varsity squad had great difficulty matching
the production of their Green Meadows
Conference foe.
The Locos were able to hold the Aces
to 5 points in the first quarter, a total out
put they were able to match. The second
period saw Hicksville explode offensively,
however, and the Locomotives werent
able to keep pace. The visitors scored 18
points in the quarter, compared to Mont-

peliers 7.
Coming out of half time, the game
looked to revert back to a defensive struggle. Hicksville scored just 2 points in the
third period, though Montpelier was unable to capitalize on this opportunity due
to a 0 point performance. The Aces once
again found their offense in the fourth
quarter. They produced 22 points, while
the young Locomotives could only counter
with 3 of their own.
The final score was 47-15 in favor of
Hicksville.

(December 11th, 2014) WEST UNITY:

Playing host to their rivals from Pioneer,
the Cadets took on the Eagles of North
Central on Thursday night. Though the
game remained competitive throughout
the first three quarters, a great effort on
both sides of the ball in the fourth period
gave Hilltop a convincing win, 58-44.
The contest started out with both
teams firing on all cylinders offensively.
At the end of the first quarter, Hilltop held
a slight advantage 17-15. They were able
to build on that lead in the second quarter, carrying a 33-26 lead into the locker
room at halftime. The third period saw
the Eagles chip away at that deficit, down

just 39-35 heading into the final stanza.

Refusing to allow North Central to complete the comeback, however. Rediscovering their offense, they outscored the Eagle
boys 19-9 in the quarter, securing a 5844 victory.
A trio of freshmen helped Hilltop keep
this game out of the Eagles' reach. Kristian Grapengeter led all scorers with 16
points in the game. Meanwhile, Steven Riley added 15 points. Kohl Collins put up
11 points in the win as well.
Nick Henry produced 13 points for
North Central in the loss. Teammates
Josh Roesener and Kaleb Faler each provided 7 points to the Eagle total.

Wauseon JV Defeat Holgate

With Strong Fourth Quarter
(December 11th, 2014) HOLGATE:
Tied at the end of the third quarter and
on the road, the Junior Varsity Indians
squad faced a difficult test.
A test which they passed with flying
colors.
After edging out the Tigers of Holgate
in each of the first two quarters, 7-5
and 10-8 respectively, the home team
came back to tie the contest with an 8-4
showing in the third period. It was then
that Wauseon made it known that they

were the better team that day. Going

on a 15-6 run which took up the entire
fourth quarter, the Indians earned an
impressive 36-27 victory against their
hosts from the Green Meadows Conference.
Chase Brock led the Indians with 10
points in the game. He also had 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal. Austin
Rotroff offered 9 points to the victory
effort, complimenting his 4 blocks, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist nicely.

JUMP BALL ... Evan Friend (42) goes up to get the ball as he competes for the right to

CONTINUATION OF JV BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION

Wauseon JV Dominate Fairview

On Both Ends Of The Court
(December 13th, 2014) Decisive
would be the best way to describe the
Wauseon Junior Varsity boys victory
against the Apaches from Fairview. The
contest was never in doubt, and the visiting Apaches struggled mightily to try and
be competitive.
Their efforts were fruitless, however,
and they suffered a 32 point defeat.
The final score read 56-24, but the
result could have been much worse. The
Indians slowed down their offense, and
allowed some players who don't typically
see time to play in the fourth quarter.
Still the final score ended up being 5624.
Chase Brock gave Wauseon a boost
offensively, producing 16 points on his
own. He also recorded 2 rebounds and a
steal. Austin Rotroff put up 10 points in
the game, also making 3 blocks and pulling down 6 rebounds. Meanwhile, Aus-

tin Bachman totaled 11 points, while he

contributed 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and a
block as well.
Defensively, the Indians held Fairview
to single digit scoring in all four quarters, even when they took out their main
players. The Apaches fell in a deep hole
from the start, losing the first period 217. Wauseon's elite defensive performance
continued in the second quarter, as they
outscored their Fairview counterparts
19-6. In the third stanza, the Apaches
fell behind even further, as Wauseon took
the period 13-3. The Indian offense finally
stalled in the fourth quarter, but Fairview
just couldn't score against that defense.
They reduced their margin of defeat by 5
points, however, finishing the period 8-3.
Wauseon played this game at a level that Fairview could not match. The
Apache program has a long way to go before they can hang with the Indians.

(December 13th, 2014) WEST UNITY: In a junior varsity contest, the Cadets of Hilltop played host to the Ayersville Pilots. The match-up was a tough
one for Hilltop, though, as the Cadets
dropped the game 66-36.
The hometown Cadets fell behind
early, trailing 17-11 at the end of the
first period. It was the second quarter,
however, that did the Hilltop boys in.
Ayersville outscored them 22-6 in that

span, creating a 22 point cushion between the two teams at the half. The
Cadets kept pace with the Pilots in the
third quarter, as each side scored 12
points. The final stanza belonged to Ayersville, though, as they put up 8 more
points than Hilltop to earn the thirty
point victory.
Kristian Grapengeter led the Cadets
in scoring. The 510 freshman offered
10 points in the losing effort.

Stryker Gets First Win Of Fayette Rally Falls Just Short In

Season Against Montpelier Heartbreaking Loss To Swanton
(December 9th, 2014) It's been a
rough year for the varsity girls of Stryker.
After getting positively blown out in
their first two games of the season, they
suffered an 11 point loss to Hilltop to drop
them to 0-3. However, they were finally
able to put one in the win column after visiting the Montpelier Lady Locos.
The contest was a hard fought one on
both sides. Taking an early 10-7 lead at
the end of the first period, a 2 point second
quarter left the Lady Panthers down 16-12.
Coming out of halftime, however, Montpelier had it's own scoring drought, only
managing 3 points in the third quarter.
Stryker took advantage, tying up the game
at 19-19 heading into the final quarter of
play. It's here that the Panthers shined
their brightest, outscoring Montpelier 13-8
to earn a 32-27 victory on the Locomotives'
home court.
Stryker relied heavily on freshman Haley Doehrmann, who scored 13 points in the
win. Drilling 2 three-pointers on the night,
she had a mixed evening shooting the ball,
also going 1 for 6 on her free throws. Taylor Haines, a sophomore, made the team's
only other three-point field goal, as she put
up 10 points against the Locomotives. Audra Rupp added 5 points as well.
Montpelier's Hannah Blake led all scorers with 21 points, single-handedly willing her team through this game. She hit

5 threes on her way to accomplishing this

feat. Senior Baylee Hageman provided the
remaining 6 points for the Locos, meaning
that no other Montpelier girl contributed
to the team's offensive output. Haley Suffel did make a single trip to the free throw
line, but she missed both of her attempts.
Both teams suffered from shooting woes
from the charity stripe, though. Montpelier went 6 for 12 from the line while only
having 3 players making attempts. Stryker
did a much better job of getting to the line,
earning 20 extra point attempts, but failed
to convert most of those trips into points.
The Lady Panthers were 7 for 20, or 35%
from the line.
The turnover margin evened out
through the course of the game. Stryker
turned the ball over just 12 times, a surprising statistic for a team that relies so
heavily a younger, less experienced players. Montpelier was also able to limit their
turnovers to 12, though, with as much experience as they have on their roster, that
is to be expected.
The Lady Panthers, despite all of the
growing pains they are going through,
found a way to win this game. The Locos,
on the other hand, reverted back to putting all of their eggs into the Blake-Hageman basket. They need another player to
establish herself as a consistent scorer if
they want to have a successful season.

(December 9th, 2014) FAYETTE: Going into the fourth quarter, Fayette was
facing a 16 point deficit square in the face.
That didn't intimidate them, however.
For most of the game, the Lady Eagles
were down on the scoreboard. At one point
in the third period they were down by more
than 20 points. It seemed that no matter
what they did, the Fayette girls weren't
able to climb back into the game. After all,
the Lady Bulldogs hit on nearly every shot
they took.
So Fayette didn't let them shoot in the
fourth period.
Powered by the efforts of Taylor Griffith,
the Lady Eagles gradually chipped away at
the Swanton lead throughout the final period of play. On the defensive side of the
ball, the girls of Fayette came alive, stealing the ball, blocking shots, and rebounding the few attempts the Bulldogs were
able to put up. A few missed free throws
from Swanton helped out a bit as well.
Offensively, Griffith put forth a herculean performance, scoring 21 of her 30
points in that fourth quarter. She hit 6
three-pointers on her way to accomplishing that lofty number, including her last
shot which pulled the Lady Eagles to within a single point with 7 seconds to go. Kaela Seiler offered 13 points to the Fayette
cause as well, while Alexis Fruchey scored
7 points in the game.
The comeback attempt fell just short of
success, though. Swanton made a gutsy
play with 7 seconds to go, and they player
throwing the ball in from out of bounds

tossed the ball the nearly length of the

court, and almost out of bounds. Another
Lady Bulldog was able to catch up to the
ball just before that happened, though,
and she scored on a layup. There wasn't
enough time on the clock for the Lady Eagles to get another shot off, even one from
half court.
Swanton was very tough to defend, as
their roster is filled with efficient shooters. Over the course of the game, the Lady
Bulldogs went 10 for 16 from the threepoint line. Fayette had a solid day shooting
from behind the arc as well, netting 6 of
their 18 attempts.
The Lady Eagles also narrowly edged
out Swanton in the rebounding margin.
Fayette pulled in 28 boards, while the
Lady Bulldogs had 25. The differential
came from the 2 more offensive rebounds
brought down by Fayette, as well as the
1 defensive rebound advantage they held.
Keeping their turnovers into singe digits
played a large part in Fayette's comeback
as well. Turning the ball over just 8 times,
they didn't sacrifice too many opportunities to score, nor did they give the potent
Swanton offense a lot of extra chances to
put up points. The Lady Bulldogs themselves committed 14 turnovers, with a significant portion of that number coming in
the fourth period.
Fayette fell far behind early in this
game, due mainly to the Lady Bulldogs hitting a lot of their three-point attempts. The
battled back without fear, and deserved to
win this game.

Fayette Eagles Defeat The

Strong Defense Pushes Young Panthers At Stryker
CONTINUATION OF GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION

Pettisville Past Edon

(December 12th, 2014) EDON: The

Lady Blackbirds have won another low
scoring game, taking down the Edon girls
40-26.
Holding Edon to just 26 points, the
Pettisville defense limited the Lady Bombers to just 7 successful field goals in the
game. With the hometown Bombers taking 34 shots, this effectively limited them
to making just 21% of their attempts at
the basket. Meanwhile, the Blackbirds
were able to put 16 of their 42 attempts
through the hoop, good for 38% from the
floor.
Pettisville was able to stifle the Bomber
offense by attacking Alex Kiess. They were
able to limit her to just a single made shot,
despite the Edon star acting on 6 looks
at the basket. She also only managed to
make in to the free throw line once, a rarity
for a player so apt to drive the ball. For the
game, Kiess totaled 3 points, even though
she typically leads the team in scoring.
The other two major scorers for the
Edon girls had a decent night, though
neither made it to double digits. Junior
Kaitlyn Sonneberger produced the most
points for the Bombers with 9, while Kaitlin Chrisman connected on 2 three point
shots on her way to 8 points. This means
that, with 17 points accounted for between the two, the rest of the Edon squad
mustered just 9 points.
Dana Fricke led the visiting Blackbirds
in scoring with 12 points. Fellow senior
Mikala Avina put up 8 points for Pettisville. Lady Blackbirds Kate Kauffman and
Lynnsey Crouch each managed 7 points in
the victory as well, providing solid scoring

in the post for Pettisville.

Both teams displayed care for each possession, keeping the number of turnovers
in the game low. Pettisville kept their errors in single digits with 9. Edon also had
great value for the ball. The Lady Bombers
turned it over just 13 times.
The rebounding numbers were also
pretty similar. Pettisville edged out Edon
35-30. Hannah Kaylor had a huge day on
the boards for the Bombers, pulling down
11. It was a bit more of a team effort for
the Blackbirds, with Crouch reigned in a
team-leading 6 rebounds.
Defense is what won this game for Pettisville. Aside from limiting Edons scorers
and shooting percentage, the Lady Blackbirds also pressured their hosts into making mistakes. In fact, as a unit, the Pettisville girls stole the ball 10 times. Defensive
specialist Jordyn Pursel led the charge in
this area with 4 steals against an Edon offense that otherwise took care of the ball.
Andi Aeschiman also had a strong defensive game for Pettisville, even if it didnt
show up on the stat sheet. Blackbird Head
Coach Jason Waldvogel took notice, however.
Andi Aeschliman had a solid defensive game for us.
Yet again, though, the Lady Blackbirds
showed that their one weakness waits at
the free throw line. An 8 for 14 performance netted them a 57% connection rate
from the line. Luckily for them, however,
Edon went 10 for 20 for 50%.
The win puts Pettisville at 5-0 on the
season, with a 2-0 mark against the Buckeye Border Conference.

(December 12th, 2014) STRYKER:

The Lady Panthers were unable to build
on their first win of the season, as Fayette beat them handily on Strykers own
court.
In the 52-31 victory, the Lady Ealges
were led by Taylor Griffiths and her 22
points. She also made the teams only 3
three-pointers in the contest. Kaela Seiler
put up 15 points, as the two players combined for 37 of the Eagles points.
For the Stryker girls, freshman Haley
Doehrmann produced more than a third
of her teams points by scoring 12. Audra Rupp, a junior, added 9 points to the
Panther total. Sophomore Taylor Haines,
usually a large part of the Stryker offense,
was held to just 4 points on the evening.
Fayette was able to convert 40% of
their field goal attempts into points, including a 50% success rate from the
three-point line. Stryker, on the other
hand, was held to 21% shooting, missing
all 11 of their three-point attempts. The
Lady Panthers did make a higher percentage of their shots within the arc, however,
connecting on 41% of their field goals versus Fayettes 38% from the same range.
Rebounding was a statistic won by
the Lady Eagles as well. With 3 more of-

fensive rebounds, and 4 more defensive,

Fayette grabbed 26 boards, while Stryker
brought in 19.
The youth movement being experienced by the Panthers began to show
some negative consequences, as the
Stryker girls turned the ball over 16
times. This took away scoring opportunities for the unit. Fayette, on the other
hand, kept their turnovers down to 11,
displaying great value for the ball, as one
would expect from such a veteran team.
Stryker completed 50% of their free
throws, going 5 for 10 from the line. The
lack of extra point opportunities typically results from an offense not attacking
the rim with dribble drives or tough post
points. The Lady Eagles went 13 for 17
from the charity stripe, good for 76%.
The talent on the Lady Panthers roster
is simply too young and inexperienced to
be expected to compete with a team like
Fayette, who combines athleticism, size,
and experience unlike anyone else in the
Buckeye Border Conference. The upperclassmen gave it their best effort, but they
were overwhelmed by the competition.
Stryker has a lot of growing up to do
during the course of the season, while
Fayette is right where they want to be.

Hilltop Comeback Falls Short,

Montpelier Locomotives Lose North Central Wins Rivalry Game
CONTINUATION OF GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION

NWOAL Game To Wauseon

(December 12th, 2014) In North Western Ohio Athletic League action, Montpelier hosted Wauseon on Friday night.
The game started out as an intense
competition between the two teams. A sizable underdog, the Lady Locos actually
held a 23-21 lead at the half. Wauseon
gradually pulled away in the third quarter,
however, and continued to do so into the
fourth. Montpelier was able to climb back
to within 11 by the end of the game, as
Wauseon took the game 58-47.
Natalie Koenig led all scorers with 30
points. The Wauseon star scored in various ways; knocking down w threes, making some layups in transition, and a strong
mid-range game. Fellow senior Sariah
Yackee offered 8 points to the victory. Maddie Richer scored 7, including the Lady
Indians' only other successful three-point
field goal.
It was Baylee Hageman who produced
the most points for Montpelier with 15,
also pulling down 16 rebounds to earn a
double-double. Hannah Blake scored 12
points, which included the only threepointer made by the Locomotives. Audrey

Pirtle, Landri McKelvey, and Haley Suffel

each put up 6 points in the loss as well.
One of Montpelier's biggest problems in
this game was turnovers. The Locomotive
girls committed 20 of them in the contest.
Wauseon's Koenig makes a living from
transition layups, and turning the ball
over is nearly tantamount to giving her 2
points. Valuing in the ball is an essential
part of the formula to beating the Lady Indians.
The Locos had a solid night shooting
from the floor, connecting on 44% of their
shots. Of course, they did go just 1 for 8
from the three-point line. Their shooting
from the free throw line could have been
better as well, as the went 12 for 26, or
45%, from the charity stripe. Earning that
many attempts is an excellent sign that
Montpelier wasn't afraid to take the ball to
the hoop. Wauseon made 9 out of their 14
shots from the line.
With their tough play, the Locomotives
showed that they could play at Wauseon's
level. However, their program just doesn't
have the consistency to do so regularly
just yet.

(December 12th, 2014) PIONEER: An

offensive explosion in the fourth period
wasn't quite enough for Hilltop to take
down North Central.
The Lady Cadets played admirably on
the road, but fell 2 points short of earning
a great road victory against a hated rival.
Instead, the Lady Eagles held on to beat
Hilltop 39-38.
The game was a defensive struggle. At
the end of the first quarter, the score was
6-5 in Hilltop's favor. The Eagles came
back strong with a 9-5 second period, carrying a three point lead into halftime, 1411. The girls from Pioneer took over the
game in the third period. They went on a
run, finishing the quarter with a 15-7 performance and an 11 point lead.
Hilltop responded with urgency, more
than doubling their total point production
from the first three quarters in the fourth.
Outscoring North Central 20-10, the Cadets came up a single point short of tying,
and 2 points short of beating, the Lady
Eagles.
Makayla Hayes, a sophomore for North
Central, served as the top scorer on her
team with 11 points, a total built on 2
made three-pointers. The senior duo of
Rachel Oxender and Sabrina Pickford
each picked up 8 points, while junior Cady

VanDeVoorde earned 7 points.

Hilltop senior Destiny Denton led the
rally effort with a game leading 16 points.
Nearly half of those came from the free
throw line, as the crafty veteran again
found ways to get fouled. She mad 7 of her
8 attempts from the line. Denton also hit a
three and pulled down 6 rebounds. Junior
teammate Allie Schmitt was the next highest scorer with 7 points, though she went
just 1 for 8 from the charity stripe.
Free throws gave Hilltop a lot of problems in this game, which is unusual given that they've won most their victories
due to excellent free throw shooting. As
a team, the Lady Cadets went 10 for 21,
good for 46% from the line. North Central
was slightly better with their extra pont attempts, making 13 of their 23 attempts for
a 57% success rate.
Hilltop out-rebounded North Central
32-26. Karrisa Crisenbery played a vital
role in this aspect of the game, collecting
13 boards on her own.
Even with some depth concerns for
North Central, these two teams were evenly matched talent-wise, and the rivalry aspect made this game truly special. Perhaps
people should be marking their calendars
for January 29, when the two teams meet
in West Unity.

Fayette Destroys Antwerp

(December 13th, 2014) FAYETTE:

The Lady Eagles hosted Green Meadows
Conference for Antwerp on Saturday,
and scored a truly impressive victory on
behalf of the Buckeye Border Conference.
Fayette took down the Lady Archers
65-30 in a route of epic proportions.
Taylor Griffiths shined brightly for the
Eagles, knocking down 5 three-pointers
on her way to 28 points. Kaela Seiler
another of the teams 7 three-point field
goal, and totaled 17 points against Antwerp. Jessie Wheeler added 8 points as
well.
But it was the Fayette defense that
stole the show. Allowing just 2 points
in the first quarter, the Lady Eagle defense didnt let up until the fourth period, when the contest had already been
decided. In the second quarter, the Archers only managed to earn 7 points,
while they were held to 5 in the third. It
was that fourth stanza that Antwerp was
finally allowed to run their offense, and
they put up 16 points as a result.
The Lady Eagles defense was also
able to force the Archers to turn the ball
over quite a bit. The visitors from Ant-

werp committed 21 turnovers during the

course of the game. Such disruption ensured that the Lady Archers never got
into a rhythm offensively. Fayette was
able to limit their turnovers to 14.
The rebounding margin was also tilted
heavily in Fayettes favor. With 37 total
rebounds, the Lady Eagles easily dominated the boards, as Antwerp could only
bring in 26. With 15 of those 37 rebounds
coming on the offensive side of the ball,
the Lady Eagles were able to earn multiple attempts at the basket on a good deal
of their possessions.
Not that the Lady Eagles needed that
many looks at the hoop. With 25 made
field goals in the game, they were quite
efficient offensively. Antwerp was limited
to just 9 made field goals by the Eagles
defense. They only made 6 shots from inPHOTOS BY JAKE WEBER, STAFF

Fayette Eagle JV Loses

Pettisville Falls On The Road To Delta Home Game To Swanton
CONTINUATION OF JV GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION

(December 2nd, 2014) DELTA: A tough

second quarter destroyed any chance the
Junior Varsity Lady Blackbirds had at defeating Delta on the Panthers home court.
After keeping close to their North Western Ohio Athletic League host in the first
period, thanks in large part to an impressive defensive performance, the travelers
from Pettisville saw the Lady Panthers
open up offensively, racking up 19 points.
Trailing by just 3 points after the first
quarter, the Blackbirds went into the half
down 27-11.
Pettisville came out of halftime determined to work their way back into the
contest. They held the potent Delta offense to just 4 points in the third stanza,
scoring 8 themselves to cut into the home
teams lead. It wouldnt last, however, as
the Lady Panthers bounced back in the
fourth quarter, pulling away from the Pettisville girls on their way to a 45-26 win.
It was Jaelyn Rufenacht who led the
Lady Blackbirds in scoring. The junior put

up 11 points in the teams losing effort.

On the other side of the court, the Blackbird defense allowed two players to take
over the game. Lady Panther Emily Clifton
led all scorers with 21 points, while Mary
Miller offered 13 points to the Delta cause.
Delta was also able to shoot the ball
with precision. They managed a 46%
shooting percentage against the Lady
Blackbird defense. That accuracy didnt
translate to the free throw line, though,
as the hometown Panthers were just 30%
from the charity stripe. Pettisville was
slightly better at the line, managing a 42%
success rate.
Both rebounds and turnovers were
nearly even in the contest. Pettisville narrowly won the rebounding battle, pulling down 36 boards as a team, compared
to Deltas 32. The Lady Blackbirds were
quite careless with the ball, committing 19
turnovers. Of course, the Lady Panthers
werent much better, turning the ball over
16 times themselves.

(December 9th, 2014) FAYETTE: The

Junior Varsity Lady Eagles undertook a
huge challenge by taking on a talented
Swanton team out of the North Western
Ohio Athletic League. They were not quite
able to meet that challenge, however.
Despite a strong offensive effort, the
young Fayette girls couldn't keep up with

an explosive Swanton attack. They lost the

contest 38-29.
Though they weren't able to defeat the
Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Eagles can hold
their heads up high knowing they gave a
good team a tough game. Fayette represented the Buckeye Border Conference
well in this match-up.

Hilltop JV Route North Central

(December 12th, 2014) PIONEER:
The Lady Cadets of Hilltop took on the
hosting Lady Eagles of North Central in
junior varsity action on Friday.
The result was 41-6 in favor of the
visiting Cadets.
Holding the Lady Eagles to no more
than 2 points per quarter, the Hilltop
defense made it difficult for North Cen-

tral to even bring the ball down the

court. The Cadet half court defense was
quite impressive as well. North Central
didn't have a field goal until the fourth
period.
Julia Dunson led Hilltop to victory
with 9 points. Kenley Brown was close
behind her teammate with 8 points.
Abby Schaper added 7 points.

Stryker Panther JV Has Strong

Showing Against Montpelier
(December 9th, 2014) MONTPELIER:
In junior varsity action, Buckeye Border
Conference team Stryker pulled off a monumental road win against Montpelier, of
the North Western Ohio Athletic League.
The young Stryker girls were all over
the hometown Locomotives from the start
of the game, and never let up. With great

effort, the Lady Locos attempted to keep

pace with the Panther offense, but couldn't
seem to pull it off, at least not on that night.
The result was a 32-18 victory for the Lady
Panthers, their first win of the season.
Rebekah Carr was a bright spot in
the Montpelier girls' 14 point defeat. She
scored 9 points in the loss.

Pettisville Blackbird JV Wins
On The Road Against Edon Balanced Scoring Not Enough

(December 12th, 2014) EDON: After

getting outscored in the first quarter, the
Pettisville Junior Varsity girls refused to
allow another point to be scored on them.
The Lady Bombers finished the first period of play with a 6-5 lead on their guests
from Pettisville. Unfortunately, they were
unable to find the basket again in the
game after the Lady Blackbirds turned up
the defensive pressure.
Putting up 6 points in the second quarter, Pettisville went into the half with an
11-6 advantage. They nearly doubled that
in the third stanza, scoring 10 points. With
the game well in hand, the fourth quarter

was relatively uneventful. The Pettisville

girls totaled 5 points in the period.
The freshman duo of Sami Tilley and
Kendal Pursel led the scoring blitz for the
Blackbirds. Each girl scored 8 points in
the victory, leaving just 10 points of production coming from the rest of the squad.
After a rough start to the season against
some tough competition, this win had to
feel good for the Lady Blackbirds. The Lady
Bombers have also struggled early into
their year. The best part of junior varsity
basketball is the resiliency that comes with
the youth of the players. Edon will regroup
and bounce back from this loss.

As Fayette Falls To Montpelier

(December 1st, 2014): The North Western Ohio Athletic League took on the
Buckeye Border Conference in junior high
action as the Montpelier Eighth Grade girls
did battle with Fayette. It was the Locomotives who came out of the contest on top
26-14.
The Lady Eagles, with not enough girls
from either grade individually, have combined their seventh and eighth graders to
make a single team. This squad is playing
an eighth grade schedule, despite half of
their eight players hailing from the seventh.
That lack of experience didnt stop the
girls of Fayette from having an evenly distributed scoring attack. Six of their number, or three-fourths of the roster, registered at least 1 point against the young
Lady Locos. Mataya Rufenacht, an eighth
grade Lady Eagle, led her team with 6
points. Fellow junior high veterans Rhys
Ruger and Kendra Ellis contributed 2

points each to the Fayette total as well. Jillian Figgins also scored 2 points, leading
the seventh graders in scoring.
Hanna Bumb played a pivotal role in
Montpeliers victory, putting up 8 points
against the Eagles. As did Trinity Nichols,
who totaled 6 points. Lauren Cooley added
5 points.
The Locomotive girls did a lot of work
from the free throw line as well. Making 8
of 13 from the line, the bested the Lady
Eagles, who shot 4 for 8. Connecting on
as many free throws as Fayette attempted,
Montpelier simply found ways to get to the
charity stripe.
The biggest thing working against the
Eagle girls, however, was depth. Combining two grades to create an eight player
team, their numbers paled in comparison
to the Locos thirteen eighth graders suiting up across from them. Its quite difficult to win when the other team has nearly
twice as many players.

Ruger Has Big Night In Fayette

Road Loss To Evergreen

(December 2nd, 2014) EVERGREEN:

Traveling to do battle with the Vikings of
Evergreen, Fayettes Seventh and Eighth
Grade girls fell victims to the hardships
of playing on the road. The Lady Eagles
dropped the game 26-18.
They did have a star begin to emerge,
however. Eighth Grader Rhys Ruger had
a strong showing against Fayettes North
Western Ohio Athletic League foe. With 4
field goals from within the arc, as well as
a 2 for 5 performance from the free throw
line, Ruger totaled 10 points in the matchup, more than half of the Eagles points.
The next highest scorer for the Fayette
girls was fellow eighth grader Mataya Rufe-

nacht, who put up 4 points. Yet another elder Eagle, Ellis Kendra, managed 2 points,
as did seventh grader Jillian Figgins.
Defensively, the Lady Eagles let two
Vikings dominate the game. Of their 26
points, 19 of them came from these two
girls, who scored 12 and 7 between each
other. Evergreen also hit a three pointer in
the contest.
Fayette really needs to improve on their
free throw shooting, not only in accuracy,
but in attempts as well. The Eagles took
just 7 shots from the line, 5 of which were
taken by Ruger. The Lady Eagles only
managed to convert 2 of these attempts
into points.

Stryker JV Scores Huge

Win Over Fayette Eagles
(December 12th, 2014) STRYKER: The
Junior Varsity Lady Panthers were able to
build some momentum into their season
with their second win in a row on Friday.
This time the victory was against the
girls of Fayette. A strong and consistent
basketball program, the Lady Eagles are
a tough team to beat. The Lady Panthers

showed that they werent afraid, however,

and they took down the Buckeye Border
Conference opponent in a close contest.
When the game was over, the scoreboard read 21-17, in favor of the hometown Panthers. The 4 point victory margin
shows just how close this game really was.

Fayette Eagle JV Earns

Thrilling Win Over Antwerp
(December 13th, 2014) FAYETTE: In
an epic contest, the Junior Varsity Girls of
Fayette were able to overcome their guests
from the Green Meadows Conference, the
Antwerp Lady Archers.
The battle between the two young teams
raged on for four quarters, with neither
team establishing itself as clearly superior
to the other. In fact, there was not enough

time in regulation to decide a winner. The

game had to go into overtime to determine
the outcome.
This is where the Lady Eagles separated themselves from the Archers. They were
able to pull ahead of Antwerp during this
time. The hometown girls of Fayette were
able to fend off the visiting Lady Archers,
winning the game 29-26.

The Cadet senior had a strong performance against North Central on Thursday. Stripe was instrumental in Hilltops
win over the rival North Eagles, scoring
28 points in the contest. He did his scoring in a balanced fashion, putting up 12
points from threes, and 12 inside the arc.

Griffiths had a great week, despite the

Lady Eagles splitting their two contests
in that span. She scored 30 points in a
tough loss to Swanton, including 21 during a huge fourth quarter comeback.
Then she followed that up by adding 28
points against Antwerp on Saturday.

Wauseon Boys Win, Girls

Lose Against Swanton
ON YOUR MARKS ... The girls heat lines up for a race as the Lady Indians do battle with
Notre Dame and Saint Johns high schools out of Toledo.

(December 5th, 2014) WAUSEON: The

Bulldogs of Swanton made the trip down
20A to take on Wauseon. The Indians were
happy to host their North Western Athletic
League foe, though the matches had mixed
results.
The Wauseon boys beat Swanton in convincing fashion. Led by Nic Kearney and his
score of 439, as well as Peyten Shadbolt's
401, the Indians an 1860-1594 advantage
into the baker games. In those three contests of team bowling, Wauseon was able to
extend their lead by another 202 points after
earning a 535-343 overall win. This brought

the match to a final score of 2395-1936, in

Wauseon's favor.
The Lady Indians weren't able to replicate the success of their male counterparts,
however. Though Summer Brown bowled a
respectable 273 in the individual portion of
the match, accompanied by a solid 252 by
Aleea Volkman and the rest of the team's efforts, the girls found themselves down 13001166 heading into the baker games. They
weren't able to catch up in the cooperative
format, losing the three games by a combined total of 422-286. The final score read
1722-1452 Swanton.

Wauseon Boys, Girls Lose Tight

Matches At Liberty Center

DIVE RIGHT IN ... Competitors from Wauseon, Saint Johns, and Notre Dame High
Schools jump into the water as they begin a race.

(December 8th, 2014) LIBERTY CENTER: Both the boys and girls Indian bowling
teams suffered heartbreaking losses against
the Tigers of Liberty Center.
The Wauseon boys actually carried a
slight lead into the baker games. Nic Kearney's score of 470, with the help of Clayton
Ricker's 375, lifted the Wauseon total just beyond the reach of the hometown Tigers. The
team scores were 1841-1823, with the Indians clinging to a narrow lead.
The baker games were also tight. Liberty
Center was able to claim victory at this aspect
of the match with a margin of 593-537. This
differential gave the Tigers the points they

needed to overtake Wauseon for the match,

with the final score reading 2416-2378.
It was a close match-up for the Lady Indians as well. Summer Brown led the Wauseon
girls through the individual portion of the
match, scoring a 293. Aleea Volkman bowled
a 232, while her sister Aneesa scored just
ten points lower at 222. With just the baker
games left to decide the winner, Wauseon
found themselves down 1329-1206.
They gave a valiant effort, but the Lady Indians were unable to make up the difference
in the cooperative setting. Losing the baker
games 437-378, they had lost the match altogether. The final score was 1766-1584.
