A familiar face will once again be sitting at the council desk come January.
Former Mayor Steve Grajczyk was one of
five residents to put their name in for the
seat that had opened up after Councillor
John Rempel resigned earlier this year.
Election Day was on Dec. 15 and Grajczyk unofficially won with 287 votes. He
was followed closely by Glenn Freeland
at 213; Nicole Gibbons, 137; Allan Auger,
95; and Jason Pollo with 66 of the votes.
The results remain unofficial until Dec.
19. At the next council meeting, Jan. 7,
Grajczyk will be sworn in.
I would like to congratulate all of the
candidates for participating. I would like
to thank all of my supporters and I want
to remind everybody that I never made
any promises, but I did make a lot of
statements and Im going to go to work
for the town and work with the mayor
and council the best I can, said Grajczyk.
I also want to wish everyone a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year.
Voter turnout was low with only 798
people voting out of the approximately
9,106 that are eligible, which works out
to about 8.76 per cent.
Returning officer Jennifer Sawatzky is
not sure how to see the voter numbers
increased. The election was advertised
as soon as it was announced; word was
spread by word-of-mouth, social media
and through other avenues.
I think its pretty typical that by-elections see a lower turnout than regular
elections. I was expecting a lower turnout
just because of that fact, said Sawatzky.
We did have an advance vote as well
so we tried to give opportunity (to vote)
and we did institutional votes. We went
out to seniors homes and the lodge and
seniors areas to try and make it convenient for them to vote. We also had the
advanced vote, which we only had less
than a couple hundred people show up
for and then (Dec. 15) we had approximately 500 people come out. Theres lots
of opportunity.
Approximately 2,500 people voted in
the last election, 2013, which is still low
when compared withan approximate
population of 13,000.

Collegiate Hawks on Dec. 15 at the high school. Both teams played a fun-filled game, before the
Spartans prevailed by an eight-point margin.

many people as possible at our festival, said Brandy Hebbes, SRAC chair,
speaking of the annual Arts and Sounds
in the Park Festival held in September.
The Masonic Foundation of Alberta
is a charity group of the Masons. Each
year $30,000- $40,000 is budgeted to be
donated.
We like to support a lot of different
organizations, said Barnard.
Last year one of the donations made
in this district was to Rosebud Theatre.
The Masons also have the Masonic
High Education Bursary Fund.
Its for needy kids who want to continue their education, said Ted Currie,
past District Grand Master.
They dont have to be a Mason, they
can be anyone so if you know someone get in touch with a Mason and well
give an application, or you can go to
the Alberta Masonic website, said Barnard.
There are 38 bursaries awarded each
year in the amount of $5,000, making
it the second largest donation of bursaries in the province, second only to the
government, said Currie.
The workshop includes indoor classroom time, hands-on sessions and lots
of time for socializing and networking.
The agenda does have modifications
each year, but the topics that are discussed stay the same.
The agenda changes from year to
year, but often includes sessions on riparian health and tame or native range
health and management, plant and
weed identification, species at risk,
low-stress livestock handling and herd
health, said Grattidge.

Strathmores radio station is a step closer to reality after
gaining approval from the CRTC. Clear Sky Radio will be
launching the Wolf 104.5 FM, a country music station in the
coming year.
There is still quite a bit of work to do, including looking
for office/studio space and then negotiating leases for both
the studio and transmitter tower. Once those matters are figured out, equipment will be ordered to begin the construction of the studio and transmitter site.
Strathmore as you know has been growing significantly
in recent years and is now at the size it can support its own
dedicated radio service. Weve found over time that communities like Strathmore that are in close proximity to big
cities like Calgary can obviously listen to a lot of radio, but
the content isnt local at all, said Paul Larsen, president of
Clear Sky Radio.
Residents crave news from their own community, local
sports and community updates, weather and road conditions. The Calgary stations have to focus on the city, so we
will fill a niche by focusing on the community of Strathmore.
Much like how the town supports local newspapers. Certainly residents can read the major Calgary papers, but the
local papers focus on whats happening in Strathmore. Local
radio will be the same idea.
Clear Sky Radio Inc is based in of Lethbridge where they
currently have a station, and they have another in Medicine
Hat. There has been approval by the CRTC to add a second
station in Lethbridge, and the launch of a new station across
the mountains in Cranbrook, B.C.

Ring the bells, ring the bells
... The tune from the radio
draws me right in. It is only
when I mull over the words,
Ring the bells, peace on
earth, good will to men, that
I register the disconnect.
Looking at how people seem
to be coping rather than
living, reading the paper
and watching the news, most
often leaves a sense of despair rather than cheer. In our
modern world, some may not
be old enough to remember a
reality that reflects the words
of that song; Nor even aspire
to such a foreign concept.
The freedom that honesty
brings to our relationships
seems to be a well-kept secret. Few people enjoy a true
sense of community because
we need our defenses intact.
Whatever happened to recognizing I am human - I flaw? I
need grace as much as they
do (maybe the greatest obstacle is my need to be better
than that. Do I have that much
grace for myself?). If grace is
not an option, true connection
is not an option. If connection

Cassia Schramm of Rosebud performed a house concert for friends this
week, on Dec. 18, to celebrate the release of her second album, In Memory
of..., featuring three memorial songs,
Marj, Fern and Shadow.
Marj was a friend of Schramms grandmother and saw angels in her last days.
Fern was her mothers friend who, Schramm says, was full of life and always
sang karaoke. Shadow was Schramms
beloved horse.
Schramms grandparents, pictured on
the cover, were her first experiences
of loss, and she says theyre present in
each song. In Memory of... is available
on www.bandcamp.com and iTunes.
Schramm herself is available for spring
performances and can be reached at

Trinity Christian Academy was in the Christmas spirit raising
items for the Christmas Hamper Society.
Each year students at Crowther Memorial Junior High are asked to take part in the Cart Wars. The idea is to bring in different non-perishable food items on the Christmas Hamper Societys wish list to help their pod win points. The one with
the most points wins a free afternoon of watching a movie and enjoying snacks with their classmates.

Saturday night hockey did
not go well for the Wheatland Kings as they lost
to the Cochrane Generals 5-2 on Dec 13 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Wheatland Kings
looking for answers
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Kings are searching for answers, after losing 4-3 on
the road to Airdrie on Friday night
and 5-2 to the Cochrane Generals
on Saturday night at home. The inconsistency is causing a lot of frustration around the team lately and
they can not seem to find their way
out of it.
I think last night (versus Airdrie), we got back into that mentality where were only playing 25
to 30 minutes of hockey and not
playing a full 60. Our third period
was probably one of the best periods Ive seen us play as a hockey
team, but once again it comes back
to you cant just play one period
of hockey and expect results, said
assistant coach Joel Robinson. We
played 5-on-5 hockey consistently,
it was good hockey, we supported
each other and the shots were 15-5
in the third period.
Robinson thought the outcome
in both games were unfortunate
because he felt that they had the
jump on Airdrie, but did not get the
results.
It wasnt the results we needed
this weekend, especially against a
team like Airdrie where we come
out the better skating team. Somethings not clicking right now,
whether itd be team chemistry or
team morale, said Robinson.
Curtis Osborne scored twice and
Sebastien Turgeon scored once in
the loss to Airdrie.
On
Saturday
night
versus
Cochrane, the Kings tried to keep
their composure but it was difficult
when it seemed as if the calls were
one-sided.
Its hard to keep your composure
when it was 6-1 in their favour,
said Robinson. There is a certain
time when you have to draw the
line and stand up for your players.
Osborne and Chris Williams
scored in the loss to the Generals.
Robinson added that it is not
helping right now having key players out who normally contribute in
different areas on any given night.
It does hurt when you have guys
like Cody Willis hurt, Blake Bishop and Matt Thomson in the stands
all guys that are regular lineup
guys and it does really affect the
roster when theyre not in the lineup, said Robinson.
The Kings will play their final
game of 2014 when they host the
Okotoks Bisons (8:15 p.m.) on
Dec. 20 at the Strathmore Family

OSTROM, Frances
(Frankie)
(1922-2014)
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mum Frankie Ostrom
at the Strathmore Hospital on December 12,
2014 at the age of 92. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her son Rocky (Beryl)
- grandkids Samantha and Randall (Maia); son
Ronnie (Carla) grandkids Joel, Jamie (Ellis) and
Jordan; daughter Laurie (Max) grandkids Brad
(Krista), Jeff (Sheena) and great grandchild Hannah; daughter Marni (Guy) grandkids Ty, Kylie,
and Brooke; her sister Mary Niwa, brother John
Lijdsman and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by our dad Paul Ostrom,
her sister Helen Carroll, and brother Gerry Lijdsman. Mum wore many hats throughout her life.
She was a teacher, a farm-wife, and an active
member of the Carseland Community including
being a life-time member of the Carseland Public
Benefit club. After moving from Carseland to a
condo in Strathmore, she later enjoyed her last
years at the Wheatland Lodge. As a member of
the Catholic community, her faith was very important to her throughout her whole life. Sports were
a passion for her. She played softball, curled, and
golfed and later was the number one fan of her
kids and her grandkids. Mum loved watching all
sports on TV especially the Flames and Stampeders, and most recently became an avid NASCAR
fan. A caring and intelligent woman, she was our
role model and our rock. Her strong and loving
spirit will live on in all of us. A memorial service
was held on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at
Hope Community Covenant Church, Strathmore
at 1:00 p.m. The family would like to express our
sincere appreciation to friends and family for their
thoughts, prayers, flowers, cards, and visits. We
would especially like to thank all of the caregivers who helped mum through her last days. If
friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made
directly to the Alberta Childrens Hospital Foundation (2888 Shaganappi Trail Northwest, Calgary,
AB T3B 6A8 or directly online). To send condolences, please visit Frankies obituary at www.
