Great Accuracy Allows Pettisville Montpelier Locos Outmatched

To Cruise Past Hilltop Cadets
At Home Against Archbold

(December 18th, 2014) PETTISVILLE:

Teams generally play better on their home
floor. The sense of familiarity that can
only come from practice after practice after practice takes over, and the rim just
seems wider.
This is the best way to describe Pettisville's 68-45 victory over the Cadets of
Hilltop.
The Blackbirds made 63% of their field
goals in the contest. That includes an
astounding 71% average from the threepoint line, based on 7 attempts. Overall,
Pettisville took 38 shots , making nearly 2
out of every 3 attempts. This made them
almost unbeatable.
Hilltop, on the other hand, couldn't
compare to the evening their opponents
were having. Shooting 30% from the field,
the Cadets put up 53 total shots. From
three-point range the team was just 19%,
taking 16 threes in the game.
Eli King gave the Blackbirds a massive
boost with his 21 points, the highest total
scored by any single player in the contest,
regardless of team. Tate Kauffman, a se-

nior, added 16 points to the Pettisville collective, powered by 3 successful shots from
beyond the arc. Josh Liechty hit a pair of
threes on his own, as he contributed 12
points to the victory as well.
The Cadets followed the lead of senior
Jalen Towers as he scored 14 points, also
bringing in 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Erik
Stipe made a couple of three-pointers on
his way to 10 points. Quinn Smith, a sophomore, lead the team in assists with 3.
Rebounding proved to be a disadvantage
for the Hilltop boys. Pettisville pulled down
32 boards, while the Cadets only managed
to get 18. Some of this discrepancy comes
from the high number of shots the Blackbirds made throughout the course of the
game. Yet Hilltop needed to rebound the
ball better offensively if they were to have a
chance against such a hot shooting team.
Every possession had to be maximized or
else they'd get left behind.
An impressive win for the Blackbirds,
it will be interesting to see if they can replicate this same level of play when they
travel to West Unity later on in the season.

(December 18th, 2014) MONTPELIER: Hosting the Blue Streaks of Archbold on Thursday night, the Locomotives
got a bit more than they bargained for.
The North Western Ohio Athletic League
foe is among the best in the conference,
and they showed Montpelier exactly that.
The Blue Streaks took down the Locos
63-36.
Despite having a sizable depth advantage, it was Archbold that had better production on the court. The Blue Streaks'
top two scorers, with 18 and 14 points
respectively, had more points than Jacob Leung, who was Montpelier's leading
scorer.

Leung had 10 points in the contest, hitting a pair of threes along the way. Kyrin
Schuman also connected on 2 three-pointers for 6 total points. Alex Matzinger made
a three-point attempt as well, putting up 5
points overall.
Michael Blake, normally a standout
performer for the Locos, was held to just a
single field goal for 2 points by Archbold.
The Blue Streak defense, for the most
part, shut down the Montpelier offense all
night long.
This will be a tough loss for the Locomotives to swallow. A 27 point loss at home
is difficult to recover from, but there's still
a lot of basketball to be played this year.

Hilltop JV Wins Seesaw Fayette Spreads Wings In

Game Against Pettisville Victory At North Central Nest
(December 18th, 2014) PETTISVILLE:
It was a crazy night in Pettisville for the
Junior Varsity boys playing on Thursday
night.
After a slow first half, comprised of a
6-4 first quarter in Pettisville's favor and a
10-8 halftime deficit for the Cadets of Hilltop, things picked up in the latter half. The
Cadets came out on fire, going into a scoring frenzy, scoring nearly triple their first
half total in the third quarter along. When
the buzzer sounded to end the period, Hilltop had scored 22 points to Pettisville's 9,

giving the visitors from West Unity a 30-19

advantage.
Then, the Blackbirds made a run in the
final period. This time holding the Cadets
to 9 points, Pettisville launched its own
offensive assault. However their 16 point
quarter fell short of overtaking Hilltop. The
Cadets claimed victory by a score of 39-35.
Freshman Kristian Grapengeter was at
the forefront of the Hilltop offensive, putting up 14 points by himself. Clay Waidelich and Nate Hartzler each offered 8
points to the Pettisville cause.

(December 19th, 2014) PIONEER: It

was a 17 point third quarter that allowed
the visiting Lady Eagles to pull away from
their hometown counterparts.
Hosting the Fayette girls were the Lady
Eagles of North Central. Despite a great
effort by the girls from Pioneer, the more
eastern based Eagles proved to have too
much firepower for them to combat. Fayette won air superiority over North Central, 50-32.
By the end of the first quarter, Fayette
held a 14-7 lead. North Central came out
in the second period with a more determined defense, which held the other Lady
Eagles to just 8 points in that span. However, they couldn't muster a strong offensive outing of their own, which left them
trailing 22-13 at the half.
The girls of Fayette exploded for 17
points in the third quarter. This is when
Taylor Griffiths started to build some momentum to her game, nailing two threepoint shots, which complimented another
three-pointer by Hannah Machalek. Not
being able to match the elevated scoring
pace, North Central found themselves in
a 39-21 deficit going into the fourth quarter.
The hosting Eagles finally found their
offense in that final period of play. Junior
Cady VanDeVoorde, who had been struggling all night against the Fayette defense,

was able to score off the dribble drive and

her mid-range game. Leading scorer Sabrina Pickford earned a couple of tough
inside field goals, as well as some trips
to the free throw line. This resurgence
wasn't enough, though, as Fayette was
able to match their 11 point output to end
the contest with an 18 point victory.
Pickford was the top scorer in the
game, regardless of team, with 15 points.
The North Central senior made nearly half
of those points from the free throw line,
going 7 for 8 on extra points. Fellow senior Rachel Oxender amassed 7 points in
the game. VanDeVoorde had 4 points on
the night.
North Central was able to keep the high
scoring duo of Griffiths and Kaela Seiler
well under their usual levels of production. Still, the former put up 14 points,
powered by 3 successful shots fro beyond
the arc. Seiler, with a pair of threes in the
first stanza, totaled 9 points in the game.
Yet Alexis Fruchey stepped up to fill the
scoring void, earning 12 points thanks, in
large part, to 5 two-point field goals.
Fayette is extremely difficult to beat.
So many different players have the potential to score, and their athleticism makes
their defense a fierce one. North Central
was able to defend them pretty well, but
their own offense just couldn't get into a
rhythm.

(December 19th, 2014) WEST UNITY:

The Lady Blackbirds are still undefeated
after taking down Hilltop in West Unity on
Friday, 50-31.
The Pettisville girls won with defense,
as they disrupted the Lady Cadet shooters all night long. Hilltop shot just 17%
from the floor, making only 7 field goals in
the contest. The Blackbirds, on the other hand, connected on 42% of their field
goals, knocking down 20 shots.
Shot selection was an issue as well for
the Hilltop girls. Despite making 3 threepoint shots, the team averaged 18% from
behind the arc. This is due to the fact that
they took 17 threes against the Pettisville
defense. Granted they were struggling inside as well, shooting 15% on their twopoint field goals, but the Cadets weren't
shooting anywhere near accurate enough
to be taking that many long range shots.
If the shots aren't falling, then the players
need to try and take more high percentage shots.
Of course, that's easier said than done
with Dana Fricke waiting in the post. The
senior standout has played phenomenally
on both sides of the ball, keeping the ball
out of the paint as well as scoring when
the Blackbirds have the ball. Against the
Lady Cadets, she put up 18 points on 7

two-point field goals. Fricke also stepped

outside to hit a three, showing off the
range of her skill set.
Fellow Blackbird senior Mikala Avina
scored 13 points in the game, making 2
three-point attempts along the way. Joydyn Pursel added 9 points in the win.
Cadet senior Destiny Denton led the
Hilltop girls with 10 points, 7 of which the
crafty veteran earned at the free throw
line. Felicity Jackson was the next highest scorer with 5 points. Karissa Crisenbery totaled 4 points in addition to her 6
rebounds.
Other than Crisenbery, Hilltop had a
hard time pulling down rebounds as well.
They were beaten on the boards 26-15.
One thing the Lady Cadets excelled
at was taking care of the basketball. And
with the Lady Blackbirds looking to run
down the floor, that's quite an accomplishment. Pettisville turned the ball over
just 6 times.
It was great defense that won this game
for Pettisville. The Hilltop offense was at a
loss as to what to do against them. This
has been the case for every team that has
stood across the court from the Blackbirds this year, save Wauseon, and there
is no reason to expect anything different
going forward into the season.

(December 19th, 2014) ARCHBOLD:

The Lady Locos set forth on a course to
Archbold to take on the Blue Streaks
in North Western Ohio Athletic League
(NWOAL) action of Friday.
Montpelier had a difficult time keeping
pace with the Archbold girls, losing the
contest 60-42.
Turnovers plagued the Locomotives
throughout the evening. They committed
25 of such errors against the Blue Streaks.
This kept the Montpelier girls from getting

into a groove offensively.

That didn't stop Hannah Blake, however. The Locomotive junior scored 23
points for the Locos, hitting 2 three-point
attempts and 6 two-point field goals as she
did so. McKenna Quaderer added 7 points
to the Montpelier total. Senior Baylee
Hageman scored 3 baskets from the post
for 6 points as well.
The loss puts Montpelier at 3-4 on the
year, though all four losses have been to
NWOAL teams.

Stryker Holds On To Win

Home Game Against Edon
(December 19th, 2014) STRYKER: The
Young Lady Panthers defended their home
court admirably against an Edon team led
by veterans.
Stryker defeated the Bombers 46-41.
The Panthers led early on, taking a
10-6 advantage from the first quarter.
The were able to build on that a bit in the
second period, holding a 23-17 lead over
the Edon girls. The Lady Bombers battled
back, winning the third quarter 11-7. This
put them down just 2 points heading into
the last period. Stryker refused to lose this
game, though. A 16 point fourth quarter
kept Edon at bay, giving the Panther girls
a 5 point victory.
Turnovers, typically an issue for the
Panthers, was still a problem. They gave
up the ball 21 times in the contest. However, Edon also turned the ball over 21
times, essentially canceling out the Stryker errors.
Both teams also performed well from
the free throw line. Stryker went 15 for
25 from the charity stripe, giving them
a 60% average as a unit. Making 17 out
of 21 shots from the line themselves, the
Edon girls boasted an 80% team percentage. Despite the 20% differential, both
teams scored nearly the same amount of
points from the free throw line, as the Lady
Panthers were able to earn a few extra at-

tempts.
This win came down to scoring ability,
pure and simple. Taylor Haines stepped up
in a big way for the girls of Stryker. The
sophomore produced a team-leading 12
points in a strong showing. Junior Audra
Rupp did her part as well, putting up 11
points. But it was senior Maddie Uribes,
who's struggled to get her season going,
who made the difference with her 8 points.
This is significant because that total is
more than she's scored in any game this
season. Having her be a solid source of
scoring adds a dimension to the Stryker
offense.
Only two of Edon's three primary scorers had big games, which doesn't bode well
for the Bombers given their lack of depth.
Kaitlin Chrisman, an Edon senior, led all
scorers in the game with 14, spreading her

contributing just 6 points from 1 field goal.
The victory was an important one for
Stryker. Fresh off of a blowout loss to
Wauseon, the youthful Lady Panthers
bounced back to beat a solid Edon team.
That resiliency will continue to serve them
well throughout the year.

The senior Blackbird played a big part in

The Lady Panthers have gotten off to a

rough start this season, yet they still
keep plugging away. This mentality
earned them their second victory of the
season as the Stryker girls took down
Edon. Haines led her team with 12
points, propelling them to victory.

Pettisville Blackbird JV Win In Hilltop Home Base

(December 19th, 2014) WEST UNITY:

The Junior Varsity girls of Pettisville crossed
the county line to take on the Hilltop Cadets
on Friday. A stifling defensive performance
helped to propel the Lady Blackbirds past
their hosts as they won in convincing fashion, 31-16.
Pettisville allowed just 2 points in the

opening period, scoring 7 themselves. They

followed that beginning by giving up a
single point in the second quarter, taking
a 13-3 lead into halftime. Hilltop made adjustments going into the third quarter, and
finally started to put points on the board
more consistently.
However, Pettisville's offense stepped up

as well, and, despite scoring 10 points in

the period, Hilltop found that their deficit
had actually increased. With only the final
stanza to play, the Lady Cadets were down
25-13.
Both sides struggled to score in the
fourth period. The Hilltop girls managed to
add only 3 points to their total. Pettisville

could only muster 6 points themselves. This

left 15 points of separation between the two
squads ,with the Lady Blackbirds on top.
A pair of scorers led the girls from Pettisville to victory. Jaelyn Rufenacht and Rebekah Steele, both juniors, each contributed 7 points to the Blackbird victory. Cadet
Aubrey Wyse put up 6 points in the loss.

North Central JV Falls To Fayette

(December 19th, 2014) PIONEER:
Hosting Buckeye Border Conference opponent Fayette, the Lady Eagles of North
Central Junior Varsity squad knew they
had a challenge on their hands. The
visiting Eagles have a long standing
reputation for having an outstanding
basketball program, and this year is no

different.
The Lady Eagles from Pioneer struggled mightily against their Fayette counterparts, losing the game 34-18.
Tristen Tomblin lead North Central
in scoring with 5 points in the contest.
Freshman Emma Zenz was close behind
with 4 points in the loss.

Pettisville Girls Conquer Vikings

(December 1st, 2014): The Buckeye
Border Conference's Lady Blackbirds Junior High girls went up against the Vikings
of the North Western Ohio Athletic League
in an epic non-conference clash. Both Pettisville's seventh and eighth graders came
out of the clash unscathed, beginning each
of their seasons with a victory over Evergreen.
It was the seventh graders who did battle first. And battle they did. The youthful
Pettisville girls battled to a tie with their
Lady Viking counterparts by the end of
the first quarter, with both sides earning 6 points. Though still a tight game,
the Blackbirds were able to slip ahead by
a single point, taking an 11-10 lead into
halftime.
Evergreen would respond, however.
Thanks to a 10-6 differential in the third
period, the Vikings claimed the lead for
themselves. It wouldn't last, though. Pettisville stepped up defensively, shutting

out the Evergreen girls in the final quarter of play. This gave their offense the opportunity to pull ahead, which they did on
their way to a 24-20 win.
Mikayla Graber produced a third of the
Lady Blackbird points, scoring 8 in the victory. Ryeana Klopfenstein nearly matched
that feat, earning 7 points against the Viking defense.
The eighth grade incarnation of the
Lady Blackbirds had a bit of an easier time
handling Evergreen. After a close first period that saw Pettisville take a 12-11 lead,
they increased their defensive intensity.
Over the course of the last three quarters
in the game, the Lady Vikings were allowed
to score just 7 points in total. The final
score of the contest was 36-18 in favor of
Pettisville.
Morgan Leppelmeier and Anya Kauffman split the role of top scorer for the
Blackbirds. Each girl provided their team
with 11 points in the victory.
