Strathmore

On Dec. 17 many people were shocked when they heard

the news that nine Wildrose MLAs, including leader Danielle Smith and our own Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale,
have crossed the floor to the PC side.
They were elected under their Wildrose platform, if they
no longer stand for what they were elected for they should
resign and there should be a by-election and they can run
for PCs. I think it is really scary to live in a province with
no legitimate opposition, said Derek Gawne of Strathmore.
Many people share Gawnes opinion, asking for the resignation of Smith and the MLAs. A popular suggestion seems
to be that those who have crossed the floor should now sit
independent until the next election.
Not everyone is quick to rally against the move. Strathmore resident Ryan Steidel said it was awesome, and when
asked to explain why he said, because the Wildrose had
all conservative beliefs and the only reason it was started
is because Ed Stelmach and Alison Redford were not running Alberta under the beliefs of the Conservative Party.
Then Jim Prentice came in and is just like King Ralph Klein,
and Ms. Smith and Jason Hale, for example, came to the PC
because they realized that under Jim Prentice the root of
conservative beliefs are back. Good on the members of the
Wildrose to jump ship.
Steidels comments are what MLA Jason Hale himself
states in a letter released to the public. He mentions having
fought for the past four years to elect a truly conservative
Premier, one that is committed to fiscal discipline, balancing budgets, respecting property rights, parental choice in
education, decentralized health care and being open and
transparent.
Jim Prentice is exactly that kind of Premier. He has committed to a set of shared conservative principles and policies that my former Wildrose colleagues and I have been
fighting towards, and he has asked for our help to ensure
those policies are implemented, said Hale in the letter.
Also in the letter he questions Wildrose supporters and
former conservative PC supporters about the sense in fighting with one another when both are working towards the
same goals. Go to Page 6 of this edition of the Strathmore
Times to see Hales full letter to his constituents.
There were talks that the move would see the Wildrose
Party cease to exist, but thats not the case. On Dec. 22
Wildrose announced their interim leader Calgary-Fish Creek
MLA Heather Forsyth.
I am deeply humbled to receive this endorsement from
my colleagues. Albertans can be assured our team is united
in purpose and solidified in our commitment to serve, said
Forsyth. We want to send a clear message to Albertans right
across the province: we are here to fight for Alberta, we
are here to earn your trust, and never before has Alberta
been more in need of the values and principles the Wildrose
stands for.

Christmas hamper busy as ever

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Another year has come to an end for the Strathmore and
District Christmas Hamper Society, and as always both town
and Wheatland County residents showed their support, donating thousands of food items, toiletries, toys and money.
Items were collected up until packing day, which was Dec.
13 and then the hampers were distributed to those in need
Dec. 15-16.
We packed 218 generous hampers which was a surprise
as we had for forecast only 180 - down from last year at 190,
said chair Dave Collins.
We had thought the economy was in pretty good shape
this year so (were) perhaps more than concerned at the situation which might develop next year with oil prices so low.

A surprise for the society this year was the demand from
larger families, those with four persons or more.
The Strathmore and District Christmas hamper is the largest
in the country, providing its clients with food for a Christmas
meal, and enough to last throughout the month of January,
giving the sister organization the Wheatland County Food
Bank a much deserved break.
Most other hamper societies across the country typically
provide all the fixings for just the Christmas dinner.
A great vote of thanks is due to all the many hundreds of
volunteers from the Town and the County including those
from all the schools, churches, service clubs and businesses,
said Collins.
This may be it for the Christmas Hamper Society for another year, but the Wheatland County Food Bank can still use
the help and donations throughout the year.

Making Strathmore roads safer

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The six-month enhanced traffic program was such a success that town
council has decided they would like to
see it return for 2015.
By having extra RCMP on they were
able to patrol, watch the speeding, the
traffic in all of town, they also watched
the school areas for us and it ended up
that we made a little bit more than to
cover their costs, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford.
When the program was first initiated

the main thing administration wanted

to do, besides see increased safety on
town roads, was make sure the costs,
approximately $2,800 in man hours,
would be covered, which they were.
This has very, very definitely made
our community safer and has done it
as a value-added service and Im very
grateful for the work of our local RCMP,
and for Councillor Sobol for bringing
this idea forward to us last year, said
Councillor Denise Peterson, who made
a motion to see the initiative return for
a period of one year, with quarterly reports presented to council.

The agreement focuses on high-risk

traffic infractions, so those with a tail
light out were unlikely to be pulled
over.
This is supervised, in fact some of
the funds that were paying go for direct
supervision of this program, and the supervisor is not content to see the RCMP
members go out and write tickets... that
would not enhance the safety of our
community, said Councillor Bob Sobol.
Thats where theyre focused on, so
theyre dealing with speeding, theyre
dealing with distracted driving, theyre
dealing with impaired driving, theyre
dealing with stop sign offenses, theyre
dealing with seatbelt offenses, all offenses focused on enhancing the safety
of our community.
The motion was approved and the
enhanced traffic program will return at
the beginning of January.

Capsule Comments
We often hear stories about the good and bad effects
about consuming coffee. One idea that hasnt been
scientifically proven but looks retrospectively at
large groups of people worldwide. There is a link
between drinking coffee and reducing the risk of type
2 diabetes. It doesnt seem to matter if the coffee is
decaf or not but it is recommended that the coffee be
drunk with little or no sugar and milk.
E-cigarettes are not legal in Canada but in countries
where they are, there has been a significant increase
in the number of youth who have never smoked start
to use this new device. This group was almost twice
as likely to start smoking regular cigarettes than those
who never used e-cigarettes. Thats a concern to
health professionals because nicotine is an addictive
drug and can have adverse effects on the adolescent
brain.
There has been much in the media lately about
vitamins and whether they are worth the money. One
supplement that is worth it is the one to help minimize
age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD
can lead to blindness, but good scientific studies
have show that formulas containing zinc, lutein and
other products can help prevent this serious eye
problem. Our pharmacists can clarify which is the
best combination.

Loitering, increased snow removal fees

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

An amendment to the Community
Standards Bylaw now sees regulations
in place for loitering with the Town of
Strathmore.
What we have done is drafted an
amendment to the bylaw to give definition to and to regulate loitering, said
Municipal Clerk Jennifer Sawatzky during the Dec. 17 town council meeting.
The amendment states that loitering
is defined by lingering or hanging out
in a public place or business where
one has no particular purpose. No person shall loiter in a public place in any
way that obstructs or disturbs persons
in that place. Also included is that no
person shall stand or put his/her feet
on top of a surface of any table, bench,
planter, sculpture or other fixture in
a public place. The fines for both are
$250 for an initial offence and $500 for
a subsequent offence.
Another change proposed was to increase the administration fee for implementing and processing clean-up of unsightly properties and removal of snow
from sidewalks due to non-compliance.
There will be increase to the fee, but
the amount of time a resident has to
clear the snow will remain the same,
which is currently 48 hours. The fee
will increase from $50 to $75.
I continue to be concerned about
the fact that many of our residents fail
to remove snow from their sidewalks
in a timely manner, so I appreciate the
fact of the increased fee, the penalty for
having us go and do it, said Councillor

Bob Sobol.
He asked administration how often the town has to clear an unsightly
property or snow for residents, which
was not known, and said that it seems
like a good way to deal with some of
these issues is have someone go out
and shovel it and then give them the
bill for it.
If they dont want to do it then they
can pay for it the other way, itll be a
little more expensive, said Sobol
This is a matter of education as well,
people have to understand they cant
leave their snow on sidewalks, this is
where people walk and some of those
people are elderly and some of these
people have difficulty walking at the
best of times.
Mayor Michael Ell wondered if there
are parameters in place for municipal
enforcement and whether or not there
is any flexibility when tickets are issued
or if are people are ticketed no matter
what.
They use their own discretion but
if they feel theres snow or ice thats
making it dangerous for people going down the street they write them a
ticket, said Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford. Both amendments
were passed.

Wildrose unites with PC Caucus

JASON HALE
Strathmore/Brooks MLA

I hope you will take the time to read through this entire
letter given the importance of the message it contains. I am
willing to meet personally or by phone with anyone who
wishes to talk about it in more detail.
I have made the decision with the majority of my former
Wildrose colleagues to unite with Premier Jim Prentice and
the PC Caucus. Heres why.
I have spent the last four years fighting to elect a truly
conservative Premier committed to fiscal discipline, balanced
budgets, respect for property rights, parental choice in education, decentralized health care and open and transparent
government.
Jim Prentice is exactly that kind of Premier. He has committed to a set of shared conservative principles and policies
(listed below) that my former Wildrose colleagues and I have
been fighting towards and he has asked for our help to ensure those policies are implemented.
I am not going to spend my efforts opposing the very kind
of Premier I and many others have worked so diligently to
see elected.
In 2010, I joined the Wildrose Party movement with thousands of others to help elect a government and leader committed to true conservative principles and policies. Everyone

in the Wildrose worked tirelessly to make that

happen. In fact we did such an effective job we
helped open up a job vacancy in the Premiers
chair, which was eventually won by Premier Jim
Prentice.
Although after the Redford years I, like so many,
was very cynical when Premier Prentice took the
helm promising fiscally conservative policies and
to clean up government, he has shown by his actions since then that he is a man of his word, and
frankly, he has won my admiration, trust and support.
Obviously many in Alberta and in my own constituency feel confused and even betrayed by our
decision to unite with the PC Party. Many supporters of the Wildrose Party feel the same. I understand that anger and confusion, and dont resent
it one bit.
But I want to ask all Wildrose supporters and
former conservative PC supporters across this
province a few simple questions. Does it make
sense for conservatives to fight with one another
when we are both working to implement essentially the same policies? Does it make sense to
split the vote as they did federally for so long and
permit left wing parties and their policies to grow
and succeed because conservatives are busy beating each other senseless because of past disagreements? Does it make sense for me, Danielle Smith
and other former Wildrose MLAs to oppose and
fight a Premier who has personally invited us to
implement the very policies we are advocating for,
especially during a time of great economic uncertainty where fiscally conservative principles are
needed more than ever?
I am proud of my time spent as a Wildrose MLA.
I feel the thousands of Wildrose supporters, volunteers and voters played an essential and pivotal
role in putting Albertas government back on track.
You have all done a wonderful job and should be
exceptionally proud of your accomplishments!
But I must ask, why do we elect MLAs? To put
on a partisan jersey and fight partisan battles for
some kind of entertainment? I sure dont think so.
We elect MLAs to fight to see a set of principles
and policies be implemented in government for
the benefit of our province and communities. For
four years I felt the best way to fight for these
policies and principles was under the Wildrose
banner.
But Jim Prentice has changed that. He is the
right leader in the right place for the right time
and I am going to help him implement the very
principles and ideas I feel Alberta is so desperately in need of. I hope all conservatives (both
Wildrose and other former PCs) will unite with us
to make this happen.
As always, feel free to e-mail (Strathmore.
Brooks@assembly.ab.ca) or call me and I will try
to return every message personally. I want everyone with concerns or that is otherwise interested
in a more thorough conversation about my decision to have an opportunity to discuss it directly.
Its well worth my time and you certainly deserve
it.
Its an exciting time to be a conservative in Alberta. I hope youll join with the Premier, my MLA
colleagues and me in making Alberta all we know
it can become.
Below is the agreed to principles and policies
document outlined above that we will be assisting
Premier Prentice to implement:
MLA-driven review of existing property rights
legislation including recommendations for improvement.

Development of a public prioritized infrastructure list for major capital projects and maintenance.
Commitment to running the most ethical and
transparent government in Canada.
Free votes for private members bills, private
members motions and government bills dealing
with issues of personal conscience.
Commitment to a caucus briefing, debate and
vote on all proposed government legislation and
major spending initiatives prior to their public announcement.
Health Care
A commitment to increasing patient choice
in health care within the auspices of the Canada
Health Act.
Strengthen health care decision making at the
local level.
Development of a plan to make our health
care system fiscally sustainable given the changing demographics of our population.
Education
A commitment to addressing Albertas school
shortage and maintenance backlog.
Ensure each school board is using a grading
system that is easy for parents to understand and
objectively grades a students skills and knowledge of the provincial curriculum.
A commitment to the basics of reading, writing and mathematics in the provincial curriculum.
An ongoing commitment to protecting the
rights of parents in making informed choices pertaining to their childs education.
Budget and Finances
Development of a new multi-year fiscal plan
based on fiscal conservative principles to maintain
Albertas triple A credit rating, that will balance
the budget, bring an end to debt financing, including for capital, and pay off the provincial debt.
Protect and strengthen the Heritage Fund as
a means to reduce reliance on non-renewable resource revenues.
Limit operational cost increases to the rate of
inflation plus population.
A commitment to not implementing provincial
sales tax and keeping Albertas income and business taxes the lowest in Canada.
Environment & Energy
Developing an aggressive strategy to promote
more consumer use and adoption of cleaner burning fuels and alternative energy sources such as
domestically produced natural gas, solar, wind
and geothermal power.
Strengthening the effective monitoring of our
provinces air, water and land quality and a commitment to keeping our provinces environment
clean.
Maximize the value of our natural resources
by expanding access and pipeline capacity to multiple international and domestic markets.
Ensure that our tax and royalty regimes continue to be attractive to investment when compared with other competing jurisdictions, and
work to decrease unnecessary red tape.
Municipal Financing
Develop a stable and predictable municipal
funding model.
Streamline and consolidate the various municipal granting programs to achieve less provincial
and municipal red tape.

Sorenson invites employers to apply for Canada Summer Jobs 2015

FROM THE OFFICE OF KEVIN SORENSON

Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, is inviting local employers to apply for
funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program 2015 to help create jobs for students next
summer.
Every year, we try to focus on local priorities,

while achieving tangible results for both students

and their communities through this federal initiative, says Sorenson. It works in local economies
throughout our large riding.
The Canada Summer Jobs initiative provides
funding to not-for-profit, public-sector and small
private-sector employers with 50 or fewer employees. It creates summer job opportunities for young

Employers can apply online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/
csj2014 or print an application from the website. They can
also get an application by visiting any Service Canada Centre. Employers may submit applications by Jan. 30, 2015.
Not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and
small businesses create these high-quality summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years, said Sorenson. These full-time students who intend to return to
their studies in the next school year can return home for the
summer months and have a summer job. This is important to families in our riding and across Canada. Our governments priorities are creating jobs, economic growth and
long-term prosperity. Through Canada Summer Jobs, we are
helping young Canadians get the skills and experience they
need to get jobs now and in the future.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Looking for a by-election

To the Editor
Dear MLA Jason Hale, I voted for you to represent
me as a Wildrose representative, not a Conservative.
I just now understand you have decided to be a Conservative. I now wonder if the well-used statement
that politicians represent the people by talking to
their constituents really happens? In talking with a
few neighbors we all noted that none of us had a
phone call from our rep to talk about it not that
its surprising.
Your previous party stated if you want real change
then vote for us and send them a message which
we all know was used during Jim Prentice current
position as leader of the opposition. Seems a little
weird when you think about it because I dont think
Jims beliefs have changed much since then. So the
question is, how do you build trust in going forward
given your recent actions? Would you put your trust
in someone that bailed on their commitment to you,
again?
If you and your colleagues that walk from their per-

sonal commitment think that those that put trust in

you now believe youve strengthen democracy then
you and your friends dont get it! This move has actually resulted in removing an opposition that put real
pressure on a party that needed a kick in the backside. Which of course is what you and your colleagues
did reminded us every chance you had, in case you
forgot. And now you support them. Huh?
If the conservatives are truly waking up to the Wildrose values as now being stated they are, then I ask
why are we not seeing them walk over to Wildrose in
supporting those ideologies instead? Hmmm power comes to mind.
Jason, I would challenge you to provide the evidence that a majority of your constituents had agreed
with this decision, if not then being a democratic society a by-election should be held.
Finally thank-you for giving up on the people that
believed in you, as I like to say you are what you do.

County wants separation from CRP

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland County approved a new a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
with the Town of Strathmore, Town
of Chestermere, City of Calgary, Rockyview County and WID to form the
C-operative Stormwater Management
Initiative (CSMI). The term was effective from September 1, 2014 to June 30,
2015.
As a result of councils approval,
Phase 1 has gotten underway with the
water balance calculation and governance modeling.
Weve committed to the CSMI, between all partners, weve committed to
fund a portion of that and make an application for grant funding to fund the
other portion of it. So theyre fully committed, this was just the closing loop
in signing the Memorandum of Understanding up until June 30 in order to
complete the work, said Alan Parkin,
Wheatland County Chief Administrative
Officer.
The topic was brought back to the
councils attention back in November
and they wanted more information before considering passing the motion.
However, there was concern on behalf of one of the councilors because it
seemed as though the other partnering
areas should not dictate the agreement,
as Wheatland County should be able to
make their own decision.
The only concern was brought up by

Deputy Reeve (Ben) Armstrong, in concern with the Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP), which were not members
(of) and that was the only concern he
had. Seeing as were not members of
CRP, we didnt feel the CRP should be
involved with the project, said Parkin.
Deputy Reeve Armstrong has been
around the longest and has been involved with the stuff that has happened with the CRP in the past and he
doesnt really want to get involved with
CRP again. The City of Calgary has had
some extraordinary powers in the past
over other municipalities, were a smaller, separate municipality so everybody
should have an equal voice.
Parkin added that the longstanding
relationship between Armstrong and
the Calgary Regional Partnership have
provided some more say on how to run
the county.
I think Deputy Reeve Armstrongs
concerns are quite valid in some respects that we dont want to be dictated
by some other municipality on how to
run our affairs, said, Parkin.
The City of Calgary, Town of Strathmore and Chestermere are listed on the
MOU as being participants but theyre
also partners in the CRP. There is 18
municipalities and 15 municipalities
that really have no interest in the CSMI
because it doesnt affect them.
The MOU did not financially bind
Wheatland County in any sort of commitment that had not already been
passed in council.

THE GIFT
Christmas is here once again.
One of our favorite things
to do is to give out gifts and
show loved ones that they are
thought of. A lot of thought,
planning and effort can go
into choosing just the right
gift for that special person. I
remember one year, I got my
son tickets to a concert to
watch his favorite drummer
and then I got him a two-hour
dvd of just this drummer doing
teachings and showing drills.
I couldnt wait for him to open
his gift. I was so excited because I knew he would love
it and it would stir one of his
deepest passions.
Then a thought crossed my
mind. What if I gave him the
gift and he decided not to
open it? What if he put it on
a shelf and said he would
open it some other time? That
would be so frustrating and
disheartening for me, especially because I knew it would
be such a blessing to him and
help him right now. What if
he put it on the shelf and left
it there for years before he

I think thats what some of
us have done with Gods precious gift. We have put it on

about it or decided not to

gone all out and given us the

Beverlys grandparents Edward Lachelt and Lillian Lachelt, moved from Glenwood, Minn. to Dalroy, Alta. in 1912 to farm. Her mother Alberta May
Lachelt was born in 1916. Her grandparents, on
her fathers side, Jack and Johanna Damen, came
to Canada from Rosendahl, Holland in 1915, and
also took up farming.
Her father Hubert Damen, an only
child, was born at the family home
on Jan. 5, 1918. Beverly was born in
1940 at the Calgary General Hospital,
the second oldest of seven children,
and initially attended school at Akenstad Country School, which was right
across the road from their farm.
After the school buses started running to Strathmore, the Akenstad
School was closed, and all the students were moved to a Strathmore
school. After leaving Samuel Crowther, she attended SAIT, where she obtained a diploma in Clothing Construction and Design. In the meantime,
Cliff was running two school buses and a gravel
truck, which were all contracted out to Wheatland
County.
Cliff and Beverly met at the Strathmore Skating

was practicing for the annual carnival. After a four
year courtship, they were married at Strathmore

They lived in Strathmore for a year, before Cliff
sold the two buses and the truck for a down payment on a farm they were purchasing in the Lyalta

there for the next 30 years, and raised their family - a son Faron born in 1960, and daughter Shelley born in 1962. This was a mixed farm, which
included cattle, pigs and chickens. Beverly says
it was a big challenge moving into the old fourroom house, but they did have a roof over their
heads. Three years later in 1965, Cliff, his father
Ole, and brother Bill built a new home.
In 1983, Faron married Kathy Hempel from

in the winter, with Wheatland Propane, followed by a period with Calgary Brewery. This meant Bev took
the kids to hockey, ball, and 4-H.
After Shelley started gymkana and
barrel racing, Bev did the driving!
In 1989, Cliff and Beverly sold the
farm and moved to Strathmore. Cliff
attended SAIT, and obtained his Building Operator (B) Certificate of Competency, for hot water
boiler operations, which permitted him to provide
maintenance for Sunset Haven, Giffen Manor and
Wheatland Lodge for many years.
Cliff and Beverly have always been great supporters of their community. They were members
of the Lyalta Community Club and have been
members of Strathmore Golf Club for many years.
Cliff was a member of Cheadle Lions, transferring
to the Strathmore Club in 1989, where he has recently been awarded his lifetime membership. In
his younger days, Cliff enjoyed many sports including fastball, hockey with the Strathmore Slow
Puckers, fishing, and curling. Since retirement,
dancing has been a large part of their lives, and
they have spent many winters taking their fifth
wheel to Palm Springs area, Ariz., and visiting
Shelley and her family. During the summer, they
enjoy taking care of their yard and garden, and
they always find something to keep them busy.
They have seen many changes in Strathmore
since arriving in this area all those years ago!
The twin arena, the indoor swimming pool, new
schools, bike paths, to mention a few. The recycling plant was a much needed facility here in
town, and has done much to improve the image
and cleanliness. Cliff and Beverly are proud to call
Strathmore their home. Its a wonderful place to
live.

Christmas market

PINE CENTRE - 110J, 800 PINE ROAD,STRATHMORE, AB

Westmount Elementary School held its 10th annual

Christmas market on Dec. 18. Grade 5 and 6 students

year the student government decides on a local charity,
or two, to raise money for. Left: Gracie Piper (l) and Madison Reinhart were selling reindeer hot chocolate and
snowman tic-tacs at the market. Middle: Aiden Workman (l) and Griffin Farries were selling snowballs at the
market. Right: Jasmeen Hundal (l-r), Sydnie Molnar and
Jaylin Madean had all sorts of goodies for sale.

Collecting toys for those in need

Once again this year, the Strathmore & District Playschool has partnered
with Healthy Families to brighten Christmas for a few families in need in
our area. Parents and students of the playschool were asked to bring an
unwrapped present to Playschool and the response was overwhelming.
Over 100 items were collected and are now being distributed to deserving
families. Kaige, Livia, Isabelle, Luba, Quinn, Hayley and Jayden pose with
all of the donations.

Bisons primed for Macs tournament

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The youthful UFA Bisons are thrilled to be playing
in the 37th annual Macs tournament in Calgary starting Boxing Day.
For some of the players its a dream come true to
play in the tournament; for others its a nervous experience at first.
Well we grew up watching this tournament growing up around Calgary and area. Its just been a tradition and its a real great honour to play in it and not
just one year last year but two years, said assistant
captain Austin Cameron.
I definitely want to take up more of a leadership
role than last year for sure, and just help the guys
that are first time coming in, the 99s, to cool their
nerves.
The team feels confident going in and will try to
use size to their advantage.
I think we have a lot more returnees and a lot
more confidence, our team is definitely bigger and I
think overall we have a better chance than last year,
said Cameron.
First-year captain Shane Fraser is excited to lead
the Bisons into this prestigious tournament and lead
by example.
Its a great honour, this is probably the biggest
midget tournament in the whole world as you can
tell with all these European teams coming over the
last few years. Its just a great feeling to be a part of
it, said Fraser.
He is hoping that the Bisons will make it out of
their pool and go far in the playoff round.
Obviously we want to make it out of our pool as
one of the top teams, move on to the playoff round

and maybe get a shot at the title, said Fraser.

The captain added that it would be beneficial to
win a pair of their homes games this weekend to go
into the tournament with some momentum.
Assistant coach Sandy Henry has been around this
tournament long enough to know what kind of competition level the Bisons will need to succeed in the
tournament.
I think weve built a hard-working identity, I think
thats what we hang our hats on. Weve got a good
skill level but I think weve improved that through
the year, said Henry. I think our ability to play fast
and hard work is going to be our strength.
He emphasized that it will be important for the
team to play their game.
The important thing for us is getting over that initial nerves of the Macs. The Macs create this ambiance for guys, especially those who havent played in
it before where they get a little too high emotionally,
said Henry. I think early in the tournament obviously were looking for wins. I know weve had some
ties in the past and at the end you dont want to be
in that formula if you can help it.
The approach to the tournament will be the same
as a normal regular season game: rolling all four lines.
I dont think well change anything, well roll our
all four lines and I think thats the only way you can
be successful in the tournament, said Henry.
The Bisons will open up against the Vancouver NE
Chiefs (10 a.m.) on Boxing Day at the Father David
Bauer Arena. The team will then host their feature
game on Dec. 27 (Max Bell Centre, 2:30 p.m.) versus
the San Jose Jr. Sharks, before taking a day off. The
Bisons will then take on the SSAC Athletics (Dec. 29,
5:15 p.m., Max Bell) and the Tisdale Trojans (Dec. 30,
11:45 a.m., FDB).

The Canadian Curling Associations Rocks
and Rings curling program is expanding
through the school system to teach students
the basic fundamentals of curling in their
gymnasiums.
Students from the Sacred Heart Academy
had some fun while learning how to throw
and sweep the rock on Dec. 17.
The program is about bringing fundamentals of curling to the kids at the schools
so they get a better feeling of what curling
is about and try to make them enjoy it and
learn about it, said Rocks and Rings instructor Jose T. Fazio.
The main goal is for us at the end of the
day to remember that curling is fun. If they
learn or dont learn everything that we teach
here, its up to them, depending on the age,
the key is to have fun.
The program is just not limited to Alberta,
as it is a national program and is held at
many schools around the country.
Were sponsored by the Canadian Curling Association, so its a national program.
So were trying to boost the kids programs
around the clubs, said Fazio.
We do them (program) because we want
to promote the sport. The sport in the last
few years has been looked as an idol sport.
The equipment that is provided is for gym
flooring as the rocks have sliding wheels and
the bottom of the broom is meant for that
surface as well.
We mainly do school gymnasiums and we
bring our own special equipment, we have
brooms and rocks, said Fazio.
The program runs for students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Strathmores Sarah Lacavalier is ecstatic to have been chosen to play for the womens Team Alberta hockey team in the
2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. from Feb.
13 to Mar. 1, 2015.
Its a huge weight off my shoulders. The tryout process is
always pretty tough and demanding. Im just excited to be a
part of the Alberta team going to the Canada Winter Games,
said Lacavalier. Obviously its a little bit more special than
the regular Under-18 nationals, but also coming in as a second year I think its a little bit more nerve wracking because

Lacavalier heading to 2015 Winter Games

theres more expected of me but Im definitely ready for that
pressure.
Lacavalier is currently playing at the Pursuit of Excellence
School in Kelowna and says that being on the ice every day
is going to help her prepare for the competition.
Im on the ice every day, so Im good and ready with
skills and shots. Im a lot more of a leader, more verbal in
the dressing room and I think that those definitely help,
said Lacavalier.
Also there is a couple new girls on the team so Im going
to help try and mentor. For the girls that are there for the
first year, I know how it feels to be new to the program.
She has an idea of what the competition is going to be like
having played U-18 last year.
I know a little bit of what to expect from the other provinces just from last years U-18 but its a little bit different
because each province puts in one team. So normally there is
two Ontario teams, which are very strong, but this year there
will only be one, said Lacavalier.
So youd expect a lot of talent from the east side but then
there will be a little bit more watered down teams coming
from PEI and the Northwest Territories.
She hopes to contribute more offensively and wear her
provinces sweater proudly.
I just want to do the best that I can and represent the Alberta logo. Its just an honour to be here. I expect a lot out of
myself this year, a couple more points than last year would
be alright, said Lacavalier.
Lacavaliers former coach Keith Klemmensen believes her
hard-working attitude is what has gotten her this far in hockey.
Sarah was always a self-motivated, hard-working athlete
and there isnt a thing in the world that garnered her success
in hockey, theres no surprise, because shes earned it, said
Klemmensen.
In the five years Ive done peewee double-AA, I dont
think theres anybody else that can match her mental toughness.

Rather than a 10th birthday celebration with her ringette team, Jayla Kenney
decided to invite her teammates to help her Pay It Forward to an adorable
little 9 month old named Victoria. Victorias mom attends the Strathmore
StoreFront school and is working hard to finish her schooling. Jayla chose
Victoria as the one she would celebrate with because she knows Christmas
is a tough time for some families and especially a mom who is working
so hard, so that one day she can provide for her daughter. The Ice Storm
showed up on Friday, Dec. 5 at the StoreFront School, with their smiles on
and wonderful gifts for Victoria and her mom, something to help make their

Phyllis Jean Zachariassen of Rosebud, AB, beloved wife of the late Raymond Zachariassen,
died peacefully Friday, December 19, 2014 at
the Strathmore Hospital. Phyllis was born October 29, 1928, on the family farm near Rockyford,
AB, the second of three children of Verne and
Cora Dresser. She enjoyed her childhood on the
farm, riding horses with her sister Rose and their
friends, and enjoying her school days at Greyhurst
School. Phyllis followed her older sister to Calgary
and attended high school at Western Canada High
School. After graduation, she attended Whitman
College in Walla Walla, Washington, her fathers
alma mater. Phyllis and Ray were married in
1950 and started farming in the Redland/Rosebud area. Phyllis was busy on the farmfive
children, driving truck, gardening, pets, bookkeeping, potterythe many activities that keep
farm women busy. She enjoyed community
events, was a member of Rosebuds Good Neighbours Club, canvassed for the Cancer Society and
the Heart and Stroke Fund, and volunteered at the
Art Gallery. Phyllis will be mourned and lovingly
remembered by her children and their spouses:
Donna (Calgary), Roy and Karen (Chestermere),
Richard and Helen (Rosebud), Judy and John
(Calgary) and Linda and Andy (Yellowknife); her
grandchildren: Kayla and Courtney Zachariassen
(and their mother, Laurie Zorniak); Matt McKee;
and Liam, Sara, and Daniel Wong. Phyllis will be
missed by her loving brother and sister-in-law,
Wayne and Iris Dresser, of Carbon, AB and her
nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren. A service will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Lord of All Lutheran Church,
Strathmore, AB. at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire,
a donation to a favorite charity would be appreciated. Phyllis would be pleased if friends also considered donating to the HOPE program (organ and
tissue donations) or the University of Calgarys
Living Legacy program. To send condolences,

Fraser earns AMHL monthly honour

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

UFA Bisons captain and
Strathmore native, Shane
Fraser, was rewarded for his
dedication work on
and off the ice as the
Chrysler Division Alberta Midget Hockey
League (AMHL) player of the month for
November.
Its an honour to
get that award (and)
just working hard
for the most part all
month. Obviously, its
not about goal scoring because I didnt put the puck
in the net that whole month,
said Fraser. Words cant even
describe how I feel about it.
Its one of the best leagues in
Canada, so to get player of
the month in this league, its
pretty special.
He accredits the award to
his parents and how they
raised him, as well as his
coaches.
My family raised me the
way I am today and Dan

has helped me out a lot this

year, teaching me how to
play defense better because
Ive been playing a lot of D
and when I go back up front,
hes been working hard with
everyone on this team to be
better hockey players, said Fraser.
He has battled diabetes since a young
age but refuses to
let it affect him as a
hockey player.
I usually have it
in my pre-game ritual, where I go after
warm-up to test my
blood quickly and see where
its at. If Im high or anything,
just take a quick shot or if I
need any sugar, eat something quick, if its fine then
prepare for the game, said
Fraser.
His statistics do not reflect
what kind of true leader he
is, as it is displayed with his
strong play on the ice, being an above average student
academically and helping his
community and teammates
out.
