Do you know a veteran that abuses drugs or alcohol or
uses isolation to avoid painful or unpleasant thoughts or feelings? After returning from deployment, some service members have challenges reintegrating with friends and Family and turn to alcohol, drugs, or even isolation. This is often a way of avoiding painful thoughts or feelings. Sometimes it is years before a service member feels comfortable to express these painful thoughts or feelings. I have talked with many veterans that decided to share their experiences with me and it assisted the veteran in their rehabilitation. It is a fact that a service member changes while deployed as well as their friends and Family. If you know a veteran or one of your battle buddies that appears to need assistance, please step in and see what services they need to integrate back into their life after deployment. The local VA Medical Center or local Vet Center provides services for counseling, mental health, and substance abuse programs. Renee ' T. MacDonald, S urgeon General, VFW Post 8762
There was no action on the paperwork end this
month, but I did have several phone calls. One was a vet looking for a loan to see him through to his first payday on a new job. Two were ladies asking about widows' benefits. And one young man asking how to get into the army (I told him finish grade school and high school first then the army would love to talk to him). Here's wishing you all a healthy and happy New Year. Post History Article 4
John and Gerry Sweeney were on the hook for $5K and needed to be paid back in a hurry. Answer. Throw a huge party. John and Gerry rented some sound equipment. Mounted on the back of a pick-up truck. Gerry drove, John stood in the back touring all of West Sacrament for well over a week announcing the grand opening party at the VFW Hall. Post & Auxiliary members sold tickets. A band was contracted. They had no tables or chairs so they got a local farmer to lend them bales of hay. George and Helen Newhall got a back bar and mirrors for $100 from a bankrupt bar on Auburn Blvd. and delivered it to the hall. Members installed it. Finishing 2 days before the party. That back bar and mirrors are still being used. The floor was completed 3 hours before the party began. Same floor as today, members manned the bar. Ladies furnished some food. The turnout was great and a huge success. They made enough money to pay a large part owed the Sweeneys. VFW Post 8762 was off and running. Everything was uphill from then on. The bar was full every night after work, Union bartenders were hired. Members took turns with janitorial duty. Huge parties were planned. New Years Eve Dance, Valentines Dance, July 4th picnics, Buck Stews, Stag Nights, Christmas Parties, Wear Your Uniform Night, Sacto Solon Baseball Night. Hardly a month went by without a big party. Comrades and Sisters had a place of their own and they enjoyed every moment of it. Sunday breakfasts were the norm. Everyone had a ball. The Post became the watering hole for members and was open until 2 a.m. Money was no problem now so they sponsored softball and baseball teams, Sea Scouts, Little League, and many more. Next, was the first Post-Election of Officers. The smooth sailing was over. Contests were hotly contested.
CHAPLAIN'S CORNER:
Again, I am the bearer of sad news. Ed Pope, a life

The family will have a get together, in memory of Ed, on Sunday January 11, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Virginia Warmer has not been her perky self but was beginning to feel better of late. We all hope each and every one of you will be able to enjoy this festive season. When you are feeling blue do not be afraid to pick up the phone and call someone. You are not alone. Jean Jones, Chaplin 6916-371-6135
Veterans and Family Support:
We had the best ever Childrens Christmas Party on
December 14, 2014. Gordon Work was Santa Claus, Dianne and Janis Medina, and Judy Blunk, with the help of the High School Students, wrapped all the gifts we were so fortunate as to receive three huge boxes filled with toys from Dee and Sam Sutton. Such a blessing, Marsala Tejada and daughter Michelle helped me in the kitchen. They made three large cookies sheets full of pigs in blankets. Good job by all, we had fun. We received and delivered more beautiful clothes, shoes, and pursed for Womens Empowerment. Thank you Ladies. Roberto Tejada finished making the grates for our BBQ Pit. Thank you Roberto. We delivered lap robes, made by Paulette Lyman and Betty Alei and two from the Presbyterian Church. Beautiful work, they all are handmade. We are till accepting pull tabs from cans and Nugget Market cash register tapes. Thanks to the many contributors of these items. Your pins and flags are available at the hall or call me. Thanks very much, Jean Jones

Cancer Insurance has been of no use to anyone. We would like to cancel this program as of next year 20152016. This year our Treasurer needs your $6.60 because the insurance is still current and we need to pay the bill. If there are no objections to cancelling the insurance we will do so next year.
