Olympics, court rulings, mid-terms

likely to dominate LGBT headlines
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Although 2013 will be a tough act to follow in terms of
achievements for the LGBT community, some advocates
say significant new battles and potential victories are on the
horizon for 2014.
Additional court rulings on marriage and the upcoming
Olympic Games in Sochi will attract attention, but the focus will
also be on the lead-up to the mid-term elections in November
2014. Voters are expected to decide the issue of marriage
equality at the ballot and make decisions in candidate
elections that would shape LGBT rights in the future.
Next month, all eyes will be on the Winter Olympics to see
what impact gay athletes coming to compete in Sochi, Russia,
might have on the anti-gay laws there, including the now
notorious law prohibiting pro-gay propaganda. The Olympics
will be held between Feb. 6 and 23.
It remains to be seen whether any of the athletes wholl
compete in the games or any of the three openly gay

Clay Aiken mulls bid for Congress

Could American Idol alum

The possibility of a Clay Aiken

significant buzz as political observers

although big questions remain about
whether he could pull off a win.
Last week, the Washington Blade

No mention of ENDA in
State of the Union address

Political insiders in Northern Virginia have placed two openly gay

elected officials near the top of a list of at least a dozen possible
candidates considered qualified to run for the U.S. House seat
being vacated by Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), who announced hes not
running for re-election this year.
Virginia State Sen. Adam Ebbin, whose district includes parts of
the City of Alexandria and parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties;
and Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette, who represents the
entire county, are well known and have longstanding ties to the 8th
Congressional District, according to those familiar with the district.
Ebbin and Fisette are both Democrats. The 8th District, which
Moran has represented for more than 20 years, is a Democratic
stronghold. Virtually all political observers say the candidate that
wins the Democratic primary scheduled for June 10 is almost certain
to win the general election in November.
The 8th District is a highly educated, progressive, engaged
district that has embraced LGBT equality for years, said Joshua

President Obama had few words in his State of the Union speech
Tuesday night on LGBT issues, disappointing many advocates who
had wanted him to address the lack of federal non-discrimination
protections for LGBT people.
Devoting a large portion of his speech to income inequality,
Obama called on Congress to pass other initiatives such as a
Voting Rights Act, a measure to ensure equal pay for women and
immigration reform and pledged to sign an executive order
raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour for federal contractors.
In the coming months, lets see where else we can make progress
together, Obama said. Lets make this a year of action. Thats what
most Americans want: for all of us in this chamber to focus on their
lives, their hopes, their aspirations.
LGBT advocates had been pushing Obama to include in his
speech a call to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and
a pledge to sign an executive order barring federal contractors from
discriminating against LGBT workers.

Amid expectations that President
Obama will issue a national call
to address income equality in his

upcoming State of the Union address,

some advocates are asking him to take
the opportunity to speak out against
anti-LGBT workplace discrimination.
With no explicit federal language
in place protecting LGBT workers

are calling on Obama to incorporate
as part of his speech a call to pass
the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act and a pledge to sign an

The details of the speech are under

In a high-profile case that many court

lawsuit that challenges Virginias same-sex

Ted Olson and David Boies, who

Poverty in the LGBT community

Studies show image of

LGBT community. The occasional series will

D.C. and around the country. To share your

As the 50th anniversary of the U.S. war

on poverty launched by President Lyndon

B. Johnson in 1964 is commemorated this

year, LGBT advocates are pointing to little
noticed studies showing that the rate of
poverty in the LGBT community is higher
than that of the general population.
In a 2013 report analyzing data from
the U.S. Census Bureau and other data
measuring poverty in the United States,
the Williams Institute, a research arm at
the University of California Law School
in Los Angeles that specializes in LGBT
issues, concludes that rates of poverty
are higher than the general population
among gay men and lesbians between
the ages of 18-44 and gay men and

lesbians living alone.

The report shows that couples both
gay and straight tend to have a lower
rate of poverty than single people and
the population as a whole. But it found
that the poverty rate for lesbian couples is
higher than that of gay male couples and
opposite-sex couples and the poverty rate
of same-sex African-American couples is
higher than it is for opposite-sex AfricanAmerican couples.
Among the reports findings that
surprised LGBT activists were data
showing that bisexual men and women
had poverty rates of 25.9 percent and

Gay man says priest refused him last rites

Catholic chaplain halted sacrament
when heart attack patient came out
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
A Roman Catholic priest working as a chaplain at D.C.s
Washington Hospital Center refused to administer last
rites and communion to a heart attack patient earlier this
month after the patient told him hes gay and believes
Pope Francis is sympathetic to gay people, the patient
told the Blade.
D.C. resident Ronald Plishka, 63, a retired travel agent
and lifelong Catholic, said he asked a nurse to arrange
for a priest to see him on Feb. 7, one day after he was
admitted by ambulance to the hospital emergency room

for a heart attack. He said that at the time he wasnt sure

he would survive.
A short time later, Plishka said, Father Brian Coelho, a
priest assigned to the hospitals Department of Spiritual
Care, arrived at his bedside. He said Coelho offered to
take his confession before proceeding with communion
and last rites, which the church now calls the sacrament
of anointing of the sick.
We started talking and I told him I was so happy
with this new pope because of his comments about the
gays and his accepting the gays, Plishka said. And I
mentioned that I was gay. I said it and then I asked him
does that bother you? And he said, Oh, no, that does
not bother me, said Plishka.
But then he would not proceed with administering
the last rites or communion. He couldnt do it.
According to Plishka, Coelho, who brought a supply of

holy water to his hospital room,

never said in so many words that
he was refusing to administer
communion and last rites.
Asked what Coelho told him,
Plishka said, Well, I mean he
stopped. He would not do it.
By him not doing it I assumed
he would not do it because why
was he getting ready to do it
Father BRIAN COELHO
and all of a sudden when I say
Im gay he stops?
Plishka said Coelho gave no
reason for not giving him the sacraments he requested
but offered instead to pray with him.

backing to Bowser.
Although most observers believe the LGBT vote will
be divided among several candidates, some activists
say LGBT voters could be a deciding factor in the race
if they coalesce behind either Gray or Bowser.
One of the polls released this week by the
Washington Post shows Bowser with 30 percent
support from a sample of likely voters, with Gray
receiving 27 percent. An NBC4/Marist poll also

Council member MURIEL BOWSER defeated Mayor Vince Gray, setting up a contest with

By 2030, that number is expected to increase

to nearly 3 million, according to a report

(SAGE), the Movement Advancement Project
and Center for American Progress.
One in six Americans over 65 lives in

For LGBT older adults, a lifetime of

Advocates push to find

218 votes for stalled bill
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Amid the push to pass the Employment NonDiscrimination Act, much has been said about the
daunting task of advancing the bill against Republican
opposition including from U.S. House Speaker John
Boehner (R-Ohio) himself in the GOP-controlled
chamber of Congress.
But the Democratic caucus isnt unanimous in its

D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser

(D-Ward 4) won 13 out of 16 precincts
believed to have high concentrations of
LGBT residents in her victory over Mayor
Vincent Gray and six other candidates in the
citys Democratic primary on Tuesday.
In final but unofficial returns released by
the Board of Elections and Ethics, Bowser
had 44 percent of the vote compared to 32
percent for Gray in one of the citys lowest
turnout elections.
Bowsers decisive win created deep
disappointment among the large number
of LGBT activists supporting Gray, many
of whom consider him the nations most

sponsorship of the legislation despite a push from the

White House and Democratic leaders to advance ENDA.
A total of eight Democrats have so far declined to cosponsor the bill, although at least two said they would
vote for it and one has said hes inclined to vote for it if it
comes to the House floor.
The eight Democrats who dont co-sponsor ENDA
are Reps. Dan Lipinksi (Ill.), Jim Costa (Calif.), John
Barrow (Ga.), Mike McIntyre (N.C.), Pete Gallego
(Texas), Henry Cuellar (Texas), Gene Green (Texas) and
Nick Rahall (W.Va.).
Of these eight Democrats, most are from Texas,
the largest state without any laws providing nondiscrimination protections on the basis of sexual

LGBT supportive mayor. His initiatives on

transgender equality earned him strong
and loyal support from the transgender
community.
Although Bowser had a strong showing
in voter precincts with high concentrations
of LGBT residents, some activists backing
Gray said they would take a careful look
at gay Council member David Catania
(I-At-Large), who will be running against
Bowser as an independent candidate in the
November general election.
I am still proud of our mayor, Vince
Gray, said gay Democratic activist Lane
Hudson, who co-founded Gray Pride, an
LGBT group that campaigned for Gray.
I will be listening very carefully to what
Muriel Bowser says and does to bring our
party together and also curious of the tone
and approach that David Catania brings to
this race, Hudson told the Blade.

The race between MURIEL BOWSER and DAVID CATANIA for mayor is dividing the LGBT community.

D.C.s overwhelmingly Democratic-leaning LGBT community will

likely be navigating unchartered waters this summer and fall as an
LGBT-supportive Democrat, Council member Muriel Bowser, runs
against a prominent openly gay Council colleague, independent
David Catania, in a hotly contested race for mayor.
I have no idea how it will come out, said Rick Rosendall, president
of the non-partisan Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance.
Many people are talking about supporting Catania, Rosendall
said. At the same time, some people are circling the wagons as
Democrats.
Rosendall is among many activists who see a potential dilemma
for LGBT voters in a city in which virtually all elected ocials and
nearly all credible candidates for public oce are supportive on
LGBT rights. Many have longstanding records of support on issues
that were once considered highly controversial, such as the citys
same-sex marriage law.
Bowsers decisive victory over D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray in the citys
April 1 Democratic primary appears to have come with the support
of large numbers of LGBT voters, even though the citys most
prominent LGBT leaders backed Gray.

signicant number of LGBT Democrats who are normally loyal to their party in
D.C. elections are considering voting for Catania, the openly gay independent

As the two-year anniversary of a landmark

Feldblum, a lesbian attorney conrmed by the

The announcement that Kathleen Sebelius would

depart the Obama administration generated mixed
reactions last week, but LGBT and HIV/AIDS advocates
praised her for her work in advancing various LGBT
health issues.
Although the troubled rollout of Obamacare and
initial questions over whether the administration

would meet its enrollment goals cast a pall over

Sebelius resignation, the overwhelming consensus is
she considered HIV/AIDS a priority and ensured LGBT
people were part of health policy during her ve years
at the Department of Health & Human Services.
Fred Sainz, vice president of the Human Rights
Campaign, said his organization is deeply, deeply
grateful for her work, which helped ensure LGBT
inclusion in health care reform.
Theres simply no question that shes been a steadfast
and committed advocate for LGBT Americans, Sainz
said. It began with her ght to help pass the Aordable
Care Act. The ACA includes key provisions that end
limitations on preexisting conditions, making it possible
for LGBT people, including those with HIV/AIDS to gain
access to health insurance.

After passage of the Aordable Care Act, the Obama

administration interpreted the provision in the law
prohibiting insurers from discriminating on the basis
of gender to prohibit discrimination on the basis of
sexual orientation and gender identity.
In August, she delivered an address at a White
House summit for the LGBT community geared toward
encouraging enrollment in health insurance plans. In
2012, Sebelius also delivered remarks in Philadelphia
for a White House summit on health issues in which
she touted the health care reform law.

and has the same set of values and same set of

The controversial decision earlier this year by

the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund to endorse gay

on as supporters of a fundraiser for Tierney.
The fundraiser, scheduled for June 25 in Washington,
is being backed by at least two-dozen prominent LGBT

Gay former Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is among

D.C. requires insurers to

Mayor Vincent Gray issued a directive
in February requiring health insurance
companies doing business in the city to
cover gender reassignment treatment,
including reassignment surgery, as part
of their health plans.
Gray said the citys department of
insurance had the authority under
existing law to require insurers to provide
coverage for hormone treatment, gender
reassignment surgery, and other forms
of treatment as medically necessary
procedures for transgender people seeking
to transition from one gender to another.
Transgender

have
historically been denied coverage for
certain medically necessary health-care
procedures, Gray said in a statement.
This has resulted in a denial of benets
for some individuals because their
gender identity or expression is dierent
from their assigned sex at birth. He said
his directive would end that denial.

Act of 2014.
It took eight years, and a great deal
of tenacity, perseverance, patience and
skill, but today the Maryland transgender
community can celebrate its equality,
and feel like full partners in the LGBT
community, said Dana Beyer, executive
director of the statewide group Gender
Rights Maryland.
Maryland joins with 17 states, D.C. and
Puerto Rico in providing comprehensive
LGBT equality, Beyer said.
Similar to an existing law that
bans discrimination based on sexual
orientation, the transgender measure
covers the areas of employment, housing,
and public accommodations.

Same-sex marriage
becomes legal in Virginia
In an unexpected development, the
U.S. Supreme Court on Oct. 6 refused
to take cases seeking to uphold laws
banning same-sex marriage in Virginia
and four other states, clearing the way
for gay and lesbian couples to marry in
Virginia that same day.
With Virginia Gov. Terry McAulie and
state Attorney General Mark Herring
strong supporters of marriage equality,
the Supreme Courts action also resulted in
Virginias immediate recognition of samesex marriages performed in other states.
Same-sex couples from all over
the state descended on their local
courthouses to obtain marriage licenses,
with some getting married on the spot.
LGBT advocates in the state hailed the
development as an historic breakthrough
in LGBT equality not only for the
Commonwealth of Virginia but for the South.

Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown

(D), who defeated lesbian State Del.
Heather Mizeur in the Democratic primary
for governor, lost his race in the general
election to Republican Larry Hogan in
what political observers called a stunning
upset in the majority Democratic state.
Hogan has expressed opposition in the
past to the states same-sex marriage and
transgender rights laws but said during
his come-from-behind campaign that he
would not seek to overturn those laws.
Mizeur, who played a key role in
pushing for passage of the states samesex marriage law, would have become the
nations rst out gay or lesbian governor
had she won her race.
Although Hogan has said he would not
turn back the clock on LGBT issues, LGBT
advocates expressed concern when news
surfaced that two of his advisers hold
stridently anti-gay views. One of them,
Blair Lee, has said he believes gay sex is
a mortal sin and two men engaging in sex
doesnt rise to the dignity of marriage.

Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1),
whos gay, losing his re-election bid in the
Democratic primary, the City Council will
for the rst time since 1997 be without an
out gay person beginning Jan. 2.
Meanwhile, Mayor Vincent Gray, whom
many LGBT activists consider to be the
citys most LGBT supportive mayor ever,
lost his re-election race to Bowser in the
Democratic primary.
Although Bowser is a strong supporter

argued that their lengthy records on LGBT
issues made them better suited to advance
LGBT-related legislation and policies.

Plight of LGBT southerners

gains attention
The plight of LGBT people in the South
where no laws prohibit anti-LGBT
discrimination attracted national
attention this year.
The Human Rights Campaign started
a multi-year, $8.5 million initiative called
Project One America, which aims to
make dramatic progress on LGBT rights
in the South. The initiative seeks to
make progress on three fronts: changing
hearts and minds, advancing legal
protections and building more LGBTinclusive institutions from the church
pew to the workplace.
To monitor the conditions of LGBT
people in the Deep South, the Washington
Blade sent staers to tour several states
and interview local LGBT advocates about
the hostility and discrimination they face.

Forcing the Spring, an account of the

lawsuit against Californias Proposition
8, stirred controversy over its lionization
of Human Rights Campaign President
Chad Grin.
The book, written by Jo Becker,
compares him to civil rights icon Rosa
Parks in its opening paragraph and
depicts him as a revolutionary leader
on marriage equality, minimizing the
role of other LGBT rights advocates. The
book was panned by gay blogger Andrew
Sullivan and other LGBT advocates.
Later in the year, Grin apologized
to the transgender community during a
speech at Southern Comfort for what
he said were HRCs past transgressions
against the community.

came up short in a race against Tea Party
Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who won
48 percent of the vote compared to the

Many observers blamed Michauds loss
on the presence in the race of a thirdparty candidate, independent Eliot Cutler,
who took 8 percent of the vote. Nonincumbent gay candidates running for
Congress in 2014 also fell short, such as
Democrats Sean Eldridge and Clay Aiken
as well as Republicans Carl DeMaio and

making him the rst openly gay player

But the Rams cut him at the end of

After
years

from
LGBT advocates, President Obama
signed an executive order barring
federal contractors from engaging
in discrimination based on sexual

Although concerns persisted that
Obama would include a religious
exemption in the measure, known as
Executive Order 13672, no carve-out was
included beyond the already existing
Bush administration language allowing
religious-aliated businesses to favor coreligionists in hiring practices.
According to the Williams Institute,
the order will protect 34 million
workers, or about 22 percent of the
American workforce. In December, the
Labor Department announced the rule
for the executive order has become
final, giving federal contractors 120
days to update their policies to comply
with the measure or lose out on

GOP wave dooms

pro-LGBT legislation
In a GOP wave on Election Day, the
Republican Party won control of the
U.S. Senate by taking nine seats in the
chamber and expanded its majority in the
U.S. House to the greatest extent since

the Truman administration.

The change in power balance is
expected to put the breaks on the
advancement of pro-LGBT legislation,
such as the Employment NonDiscrimination Act and an expected
comprehensive LGBT civil rights bill. It
also may open the doors to anti-LGBT
legislation, such as a federal religious
freedom bill. But even with Democratic
control of the Senate, no pro-LGBT
legislation reached President Obamas
desk in 2014. Support for ENDA
crumbled over discontent with a broad
religious exemption that was included
in the Senate-passed version of the bill.

Before the year was out, a total of 35

appeals court to decide to uphold bans
on same-sex marriage was the U.S. Sixth

that jurisdiction have called for review by
the Supreme Court. Legal experts expect
a nationwide ruling on the marriage issue

the beach resort of Varadero in May that
drew hundreds of LGBT rights advocates
from Latin America and the Caribbean.
She also attended the International
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans and Intersex

Anti-gay African laws

spark global outrage

The U.N. Human Rights Council on

Sept. 26 adopted a resolution against
anti-LGBT violence and discrimination.
The body by a 25-14 vote margin
approved the resolution that Chile,
Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil introduced.
We are pleased to see that today
the international community is visibly
and publicly upholding the rights of
LGBT individuals, and thereby we
demonstrate ourselves as a global
community respecting the rights of all,
said Ambassador Keith Harper, who
represents the U.S. on the U.N. Human
Rights Council.
The U.N. Human Rights Council in
2011 narrowly approved an LGBT rights
resolution. The same body in June
adopted a resolution on the Protection
of the Family that Russia and Uganda
co-sponsored.

Anti-gay laws that Nigeria and Gambia

enacted in 2014 sparked global outrage.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
in January signed into law a draconian
bill that, among other things, punishes
those who enter into a same-sex
marriage with up to 14 years in prison.
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh in
November signed a statute that calls for
a life sentence for those convicted of
aggravated homosexuality.
Jammeh
in
February
described
gay men as vermin in a speech
that commemorated his countrys
independence from the U.K.
The State Department has repeatedly
criticized the two countries over their
LGBT rights records, but Gambian
advocates said the U.S. has not done
enough to respond to the issue. They
also criticized President Obama for
inviting Jammeh and Jonathan to the
White House in August during a summit
of African leaders that took place in
Washington.

Before we charge headlong into 2015,

lets pause and remember the year that was.
Everyone at the Blade works hard each
week to bring our readers and advertisers the news and information important
to the LGBT community. Its not easy
were a lean team often working long
hours in a thankless profession in an industry bueted by change. And the Blade
is changing right along with the times. A
few reections on 2014.
First, a big thank you to all of our readers and advertisers. To our readers: We
value your input and support, so keep the
comments, Facebook shares, re-Tweets,
and yes, even the letters to the editor,
coming. To our advertisers: Youre in this
with us, helping to fund the important
and award-winning journalism that our
community needs and expects. We dont
take any of you for granted. A sincere
thank you.
Second, a hat-tip to the Blade team. Our

Blade sta attended the White House

Correspondents Association Dinner in May.

editorial sta is the most tenacious and

hard working in the movement and Im
proud to work with each of you Joey,
Lou, Chris, Michael, Michael and Mariah.
Our freelancers, op-ed writers and other
contributors keep the content fresh, smart
and edgy. A special thanks to Peter Rosenstein for your ongoing counsel; Rick Rosendall for returning to our team; Patrick Folliard for another year of top-notch weekly
theater reviews; Damien Salas for your
keen eye; and Kevin Majoros for taking our
sports coverage to new heights last year.
Our sales team Stephen, Brian, Jeryl,
Sheila, Erin, Phil and everyone at Rivendell keeps delivering results both in
print and increasingly in digital revenue.
Thank you for your dedication, innovation and patience. To Jim and Rick of our
production team, which brought home
E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

another design award in 2014, thanks

for putting up with all the divas on sta
and for always getting it done and making it gorgeous. To my business partners, Lynne and Brian, working with you
is a privilege heres to scaling greater
heights in 2015.
We accomplished a lot in 2014. Apart
from feeding the 24/7 web and social media beast, we published 52 print editions,
launched a redesigned website, won multiple journalism and design awards, celebrated the Blades 45th anniversary and
launched a non-prot foundation. We
published several special issues including
Best Of, Sports, Pride and others; built a
kick-ass Pride oat; were honored by the
D.C. Historical Society; and sponsored
a wide array of community groups and
events throughout the year, including the
D.C. Gay Flag Football League, the Point
Foundation, Capital Pride and too many
others to name.
In May, the Blade was welcomed to the
White House Correspondents Association
Dinner and received shout-outs from the
podium from the association president as
well as from President Obama himself, a
development that would have been unthinkable just a few short years ago.
Also in May, I ventured behind prison
walls to interview an openly gay man
sentenced to 15 years for killing another
gay man in a drunk driving accident. It
brought to light many troubling issues for
our community, including the plague of
addiction and the unjust laws and harsh
treatment faced by gay inmates in our nations prisons.
And we traveled last year. To Peru,
Mexico, across the country covering the
myriad court rulings related to marriage,
to Cleveland for the Gay Games and
throughout the Deep South for special
coverage related to our 2014 commitment to exploring poverty in the LGBT
community. More exciting trips are
planned for 2015 so stay tuned.
On a personal note, I was involved in
a serious car crash in August that sidelined me for several weeks after surgery.
Thanks to the entire sta for covering for
me while I was out of commission. After
the surgery, I nally married my partner
of nearly 17 years, bringing into sharp
personal focus the importance of the institution weve covered so closely for so
many years.
The year ahead promises many more
headlines, dramas and thrills from the
kicko of the 2016 presidential race to the
40th anniversary of Capital Pride. And were
working on several big projects at the Blade,
the details of which well share soon. Until
then, thanks for reading and best wishes for
a healthy and happy New Year.

Athletes and ambassadors

2014 saw mixture of advances
and stark reminders of
continued injustice

RICHARD J. ROSENDALL is a writer and activist.

Reach him at rrosendall@starpower.net.

The gay journey in America proceeded

down many paths in 2014. Here are some
highlights:
Legal protections. The march toward
nationwide marriage equality accelerated, with victories in several federal circuit
courts. A high point came in August, when
Seventh Circuit Judge Richard Posner
grilled hapless defenders of the Indiana
and Wisconsin gay marriage bans. A setback in the Sixth Circuit provided the conict among circuits that Justice Ginsburg
said was needed to get the U.S. Supreme
Court to revisit the issue. In Congress,
Sen. Je Merkley (D-Ore.) pledged to introduce a new LGBT rights bill that revives
the comprehensive approach taken by

Rep. Bella Abzug (D-N.Y.) 40 years ago.

Sports. Openly gay athletes continued
their pioneering eorts. Derrick Gordon
of UMass, the rst openly gay NCAA Division 1 mens basketball player, has
glowed since coming out. Robbie Rogers of L.A. Galaxy won an MLS Cup as an
openly gay player. Michael Sams record
of sacks in the preseason suggested that
his absence from an NFL roster is not for
lack of talent but because he is gay, as Cyd
Zeigler of OutSports says. Older gay players mentored younger ones; continued
anti-gay bias makes this support crucial.
Police and justice. The catalogue of
police killings of unarmed black men was
mind-boggling. Yet many mostly white police unions remained belligerent, treating
any criticism of excessive force as slander.
But the size, diversity, and persistence of
crowds of protesters suggest that denial
will not make the issue go away.
Some gay people objected when national LGBT groups joined in the protests. To
read some comments, you would think that
saying thug over and over could erase or
justify the stark racial disparity in our justice
system. This shows blindness to our own
diversity and ignorance of our history.
When people feel excluded from any
reasonable expectation of justice, as happened in San Francisco in 1979 when Har-

vey Milks assassin Dan White escaped a

murder conviction, riots like White Night
can occur. Deploring violence rings hollow without justice. America was founded
in revolution. If public safety ocers can
evade culpability even when they violate
their own rules on camera, their thuggery
has ocial backing. At Stonewall in 1969,
gay people reached their breaking point.
We honor them for good reason.
Military and international. The transition to openly gay military service has gone
so smoothly it has generated little news.
The ght to end discrimination against
transgender service members continues;
two dozen have been discharged in the
past two years. The First Circuit Court of
Appeals ruled that a lawsuit by Sexual Minorities Uganda against Scott Lively for
crimes against humanity can proceed.
In diplomatic news, Ted Osius III joined a
growing list of openly gay envoys when he
was sworn in as ambassador to Vietnam.
Health. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (DMass.) led 80 senators and House members in urging an end to the lifetime ban
on blood donations by men who have
had sex with men, calling for science to
replace stereotypes. The U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention called for
wider use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
(PrEP) for HIV prevention, despite strong

opposition by Michael Weinstein of AIDS

Healthcare Foundation. There have been
no new HIV infections among more than
500 Kaiser Permanente customers using
PrEP. New York and the District of Columbia adopted rules forbidding health
insurers from denying medically necessary treatment to transgender people.
D.C. joined California and New Jersey in
passing legislation banning ex-gay conversion therapy for minors.
Media. Schadenfreude was rampant
after Sean Eldridge failed in his bid to
buy a congressional seat and husband
Chris Hughes provoked a mass walkout
at The New Republic by sacking top editors. Hughes was faulted for wrecking a
century-old magazine in his eort to create a vertically integrated digital media
company, that is, a word salad. Former
TNR writer Jamie Kirchick at The Daily
Beast dubbed them Americas worst gay
power couple, but their youthful hubris
and confusion of wealth for wisdom transcend sexual orientation.
GOP reform. A group of young conservatives, their eyes on 2016, called for removal
of anti-gay language from the Republican
Party platform. Dont hold your breath.

Resolve to make the world a better place

Vote, write to your lawmakers
and speak out in 2015

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

As we ring in 2015, lets remember some

of the good things that happened in 2014
that will bring benets in the New Year. I celebrated marriage equality becoming law in
more states than we could ever have imagined and Muriel Bowser winning the D.C.
mayors race and taking oce on Jan. 2.
She got o to a good start with her appointments, leading with Rashad Young
as the new city administrator. She deftly
worked with Mayor Gray to move forward the soccer stadium deal and joined
with those pushing D.C. as the site of the

2024 Summer Olympics. We elected Karl

Racine our rst independent attorney
general. The Ready for Hillary PAC made
history by generating more than three
million supporters and 100,000 contributors all for the candidate who has yet to
announce she is running.
Now if only when the clock strikes midnight, and the ball in Times Square lights
up the sign saying 2015 is here, all our old
problems would go away and we were able
to start with a clean slate. Climate change
wouldnt be such a problem; there would be
no continuing war in Afghanistan and ISIS
wouldnt be threatening so that we are looking at reentering a war in Iraq. The Tea Party
would be gone and we might still be deceiving ourselves about having a justice system
that treats everyone equally. It would be a
little like Congress. When the session ends
all the bills introduced that havent been acted on disappear and are only reintroduced if
anyone is still interested.
Alas, that doesnt happen. So we enter
2015 facing the problems of 2014 that
have no clear solutions and are no closer
to being solved than they were at 11:59

on Dec. 31. We continue to cringe when

listening to Dick Cheney make tortuous
explanations of why he doesnt think we
committed torture; watch Republicans
still trying to repeal the Aordable Care
Act; and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), the latest reincarnation of Joe McCarthy, continuing to make life tough for new Senate
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ken.)
who is bad enough on his own. We can
anticipate the new Congress accomplishing as little as the last one.
So for 2015 we may want to make some
New Years resolutions beyond those that
call for going on a diet and going to the
gym more often. Although those are great
and I have already made them myself,
maybe we can resolve to take a little more
responsibility to make our world better.
Resolve that we will be better citizens
beginning with a commitment to always
vote and talk to everyone we know about
how important that is. Resolve to ght
any Republican initiatives that make it
more dicult for people to do so.
Each of us could resolve to write a letter to the president, a senator or member

of Congress, telling them what you expect

them to do to make the world better. Share
your ideas, then resolve to choose a favorite cause or charity and commit either volunteer time or a donation, even better do
both. Resolve that the next time you hear
yourself complaining about something
whether it is the trac, the snow not being cleaned from the streets after a storm
or something else that annoys you, that
you will take a few minutes and gure out
some action you can take to x it. Speak
up and speak out and you will be amazed
at what it can accomplish and how much
better it will make you feel.
This can be a year of change. It can be
the year that we make our justice system more equitable and the year that
the world faces the reality of climate
change and does something about it. It
can be the year that the Supreme Court
nally makes marriage equality the law of
the land and the year that we bring our
troops home from Afghanistan. May 2015
bring to you, your family and friends only
joy, health and happiness. May it bring
peace on Earth.

The top gay moments in lm, music, TV and more

By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO

Here is our countdown of the entertainment worlds Top 10 gayest moments of the year:

SAM SMITH is nominated for six Grammys.

Citing powerhouse divas such

as Adele, Amy Winehouse, Lady
Gaga, Beyonce and more as
his inuences, it was no huge surprise
when British singer Sam Smith came
out to E! in May. Known for his work on
Disclosures Latch and Naughty Boys
La La La, the breakout star has had
the kind of career aspiring pop singers
dream of: his debut studio album In
the Lonely Hour was an international
smash. Last month he found out hes up
for six Grammys. His single Stay With
Me hit the top 10 in 10 countries.

Though stylistically they couldnt

be more diverse, two male country
singers came out last year. What
Mattered Most singer Ty Herndon, 52,
a veteran whose rst album debuted in
1995, came out in November in a People
magazine exclusive in which he referred
to himself as an out, proud and happy
gay man. Hes been married twice
previously to women but said hes been in
a relationship with a man in recent years.
Former child star Billy Gilman, now 26,
rose to fame with his debut album One
Voice, released in 2000 when he was

just 12. Though not nearly as active in

recent years his last album was in 2006
though he had several singles since then
Gilman came out in a video post in
November and said hes gay and is dating.

Though it drew mixed reviews, Ellen

DeGeneres returned in one of
pop cultures most demanding and
thankless jobs to host the 86th annual
Academy Awards in March, her second
time at the helm of lmdoms biggest
night. Among her more memorable
moments were a sele taken with Julia

Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep and

several others on the star-studded front
row, aping another Hollywood lesbian
(the late Billie Burke) when she strode
onstage in the famous Glinda gown
from The Wizard of Oz and, in a rare
moment of edgier comedy, suggesting
Liza Minnelli, there with her sibs for an
Oz tribute, was actually a drag queen.
Though just slightly mied, Liza said
later she found the joke a little mean.
Gravity was the evenings big winner but
Ellen deserves some of the kudos it
was the most-watched Oscars since 2000.

a Tony for his lauded turn in the genderbending Hedwig and the Angry Inch on
Broadway. He had a deliciously creepy
role as Desi in the box oce smash

September, wrapped a groundbreaking
run playing straight on the sitcom How
I Met Your Mother and agreed to host

the Academy Awards in February. The

41-year-old is widely considered the most

If Neil Patrick Harris is the most

high-prole gay actor, Laverne

Emmy nominated for her role as Sophia

bitter blow when one of its all-time
favorites, legendary comedian Joan
Rivers, died of cardiac arrest at age 81
during an outpatient throat procedure.
She died Sept. 4 after several days in a
medically induced coma. Though initially
known as a regular on The Tonight Show
in the 60s with Johnny Carson and later
her own Late Show with Joan Rivers,
it was her biting stand-up celebrityskewering wit and fashion critiques on
the red carpets of major award shows
that endeared her to a legion of gay fans.
In 2013 she declared herself Queen of
the gays (nobody argued) and she was
a long-time advocate of gay causes. I
remember when I was working at the
Duplex in Greenwich Village in New York
at the beginning of my career, she told
the Advocate, and the only ones who
would laugh at my jokes were the gay
guys. I think if I had started out in straight
clubs and bars, I never wouldve gotten
anywhere.

Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), the gay
British WWII-era codebreaker famous for
his intellectual brilliance but who had a
tragic downfall in an era grossly ignorant
of gay rights. Already a critical darling, the
lm has ve nominations pending at the
72nd annual Golden Globe Awards on

Although nothing new, LGBT themes

continue to have wide representation
on new TV shows. Looking, an HBO
comedy/drama, gained attention for
its frank portrayals of the lives of three
gay men living in San Francisco. Out
actor Jonathan Gro stars as Patrick, a
video game designer. The show, which
has drawn mixed reviews, returns for a
second season Jan. 11. Transparent,
though initially unveiled in February,
debuted its full 10-episode season run

YIR: THEATER

2014 year in review: theater

Gay themes wide-ranging from sports to thrillers to Noel Coward and more
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
In a year lled with compelling and
wide-ranging theater much of special
interest to LGBT audiences one of
the best works was all about football,
seriously.
The Olney Theatre Center mounted
an unforgettable production of Andrew
Hinderakers Colossal transforming
the centers intimate black box into a
football eld. Told in four quarters with
a halftime show, the storyline focuses on
Mike, an injured college football player
whos struggling with sexuality and his
loss of mobility. Helmed by director Will
Davis, who is transgender, and superbly
choreographed by Christopher DAmboise
with additional movement choreography
by Ben Cunis, the production oozed
both testosterone and insight. Inspired
performances were delivered by Chicago
actor Michael Patrick Thornton as Mike,
Joseph Carlson as pre-injury Mike, and
Jon Hudson Odom as pre-injury Mikes
team co-captain and romantic interest.
There was room for baseball this year
too. 1st Stage in Tysons presented a
terric version of gay playwright Richard
Greenbergs Take Me Out. Often
called the gay baseball play, its the tale
of team superstar Darren Lemming who
unexpectedly holds a press conference
announcing hes gay. Lemming (played
at 1st Stage by the excellent Jaysen
Wright) mistakenly believes therell be
no blowback. After all, bad things dont
happen to a young, rich and admired
centerelder.
Best
known
for
pared-down
interpretations of big musicals, Signature
Theatre presented a truly rst rate
production of Laura Easons sexy and
engaging play Sex with Strangers.
Out actor Holly Twyford and Luigi Sottile
starred as the unlikely lovers in this
story of a middle-aged novelist who gets
together with a younger, womanizing
blogger.
The year saw some compelling works
at inviting venues in Anacostia. At the
Anacostia Performing Arts Center, Factory
449 presented a stunning production
of The Amish Project, a one-woman,
seven-character recount of the killing of
Amish schoolgirls by a crazed gunman.
Holly Twyford directed Nanna Ingvarsson
in a tour-de-force performance. And
at the intimate Anacostia Playhouse,
Scena Theatres artistic director Robert
McNamara staged a well done production
of gay British playwright Mark Ravenhills
Handbag, a black comedy dealing with
gay relationships, parenthood and child

Among the years theatrical highlights were the sports-themed Colossal at Olney Theatre Center, 1st Stages TAKE ME OUT and Factory 449s The Amish Project.

neglect in both Wildean and modern-day

London.
2014 was a big year for D.C.s young
out director Matthew Gardiner. Among
his high notes was an impeccably staged
production of Sondheims musical
Sunday in the Park With George at
Signature Theatre starring a talented
pair of New York imports (the delightfully
versatile Brynn OMalley as Dot and
handsome Claybourne Elder as George).
He also staged Ordinary Days at
Bethesdas Round House Theater. Penned
by out composer Adam Gwon, Ordinary
Days is a fun and aecting musical about
four young peoples intersecting lives in
Manhattan. Under Gardiners sure hand,
the perfectly cast ensemble was superb.
This year brought out-of-town talent
to the D.C. theater scene including
gay San Francisco-based playwright
Peter Sinn Nachtrieb who spent time
at Woolly Mammoth tweaking his new
political comedy The Totalitarians.
At the Shakespeare Theatre Company,

British screen/stage star Sin Phillips

played Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wildes
comic masterpiece The Importance of
Being Ernest. And at Studio Theatres
2ndStage, Broadways marvelous Barbara
Walsh gave a spooky turn as Margaret
White, the fanatical and ill-fated mother
in Carrie: the Musical.
Throughout 2014, respects were
paid to some late great gay artists. The
Shakespeare Theatre Company stylishly
tipped its hat to gay British playwright
Nol Coward with English director Maria
Aitkens gorgeous, funny, alive-yetfaithful production of Cowards Private
Lives. James Waterston played Elyot and
an especially good and beautiful Bianca
Amato was Amanda. Aitkens production
was all that is Coward: witty repartee,
amusing situations, travel, soigne
evening clothes, smart cocktails and
cigarettes incessantly oered from silver
cases.
The Companys paean to Coward
continued with Kneehigh Theatres

delightful
production
of
Brief
Encounter, an adaptation of the samenamed 1945 British lm based on the
gay playwrights sentimental romance
Still Life. Director/writer Emma Rice
ingeniously blended theater and lm
incorporating
projections,
musical
numbers and myriad clever touches.
In February, the In Series presented
Steven Scott Mazzola and Greg Stevens
The Cole Porter Project: Its All Right
With Me at Source. The gay pairs
collaborative tribute celebrated the
staggering breadth of the gay composers
music and explored his many facets
without getting too bogged down in
biography. And in April,
innovative
company force/collision marked the
20th anniversary of queer British
lmmaker John Jarmans death from
AIDS complications with JARMAN (all
this maddening beauty), a riveting
multi-media
collaboration
featuring
the companys artistic director John
Moletress.

2014 year in review: lm

Stranger, Imitation Game and indie fare among years best
By BRIAN T. CARNEY
There were strong feature lms
(both mainstream and indie releases),
fascinating documentaries and several
supportive venues and festivals in
Washington that are slowly growing a
queer lm culture here making 2014,
overall, an excellent year in lm.
One of the best releases was one of
the rst Stranger by the Lake. This
award-winning French lm was billed
as an erotic gay thriller and it lived up
to that description. The action unfolds
on the banks of a lake where men meet
for sex, which is shown in graphic detail.
The thriller starts when the seemingly
innocent Franck watches Michel swim
out into a lake with a man and swim back
to shore alone. Director Alain Guiraudie
skillfully captures the mundane yet
thrilling rituals of cruising and the
inscrutable passion that arises between
Franck and Michel.
Other highlights included:
Calvary opens when Father
James (Brendan Gleeson) is threatened
with death by an unseen man in the
confessional who was sexually molested
by a priest when he was a boy. Among
the suspects are a hypocritical closeted
detective and a Hollywood-obsessed gay
hustler who has also been the victim of
clerical sexual abuse.
Based on a true story, Pride tells
the tale of an unlikely alliance between
gay and lesbian activists from London
and striking Welsh coal miners. While the
screenplay relies a little too heavily on
well-worn plot devices, the movie is an
infectious and uplifting tale of personal
growth and political solidarity.
Written and directed by talented
newcomer Julien Simien, Dear White
People looks at the lives of four black
students who get drawn into a racial
incident at a predominantly white college.
One of them is Lionel Higgins (Tyler James
Williams), an undergraduate journalist
who doesnt t in with either the gay
or African-American student groups.
Simiens groundbreaking lm marks the
rst time that a gay character has been
featured in a predominantly AfricanAmerican movie.
The Skeleton Twins stars Saturday
Night Live alumni Kristen Wiig and
Bill Hader as estranged twins who are
reunited after his suicide attempt. He
returns to their hometown to recover and
to reignite an aair with his high school
English teacher (Ty Burrell) while she tries
to work out her marriage to Luke Wilson.
Both Wiig and Hader turn in strong

nuanced performances and Haders

scenes in drag are wonderful.
Hector and the Search for
Happiness stars Simon Pegg as a bored
psychiatrist who travels the globe to nd
the secret of happiness. One of his tour
guides is an old friend who has found
happiness by coming out of the closet.
Though technically a made-for-TV
movie, The Normal Heart debuted in
May on HBO and was a widely lauded
adaptation of Larry Kramers legendary
AIDS-themed play of the same name.
The Way He Looks is a charming
Brazilian coming-of-age tale about Leo,
a blind teenager whos trying to escape
from his overprotective mother. Leo
befriends Gabriel, the new kid in town,
and feelings begin to icker between the
two boys, much to the dismay of Leos
best friend, Giovanna.
While it didnt include any LGBT
content, one of the most progressive and

thought-provoking movies of 2014 was

Belle, a beautifully lmed movie about
a mixed-race heiress being raised by her
aristocratic uncle in eighteenth-century
England. Director Amma Asante and a
knockout ensemble cast tackle complex
themes of race, class and gender and tell
a moving story that combines intimate
details and epic historical sweep.
The year in LGBT feature lms came
to a dramatic conclusion with The
Imitation Game, the story of Alan Turing
(Benedict Cumberbatch), the gay British
mathematician who broke the German
Enigma code during World War II but was
later prosecuted for his homosexuality.
It was also a great year for LGBTthemed documentaries. One of the most
notable was HBOs The Case Against
8, which followed two California couples
who brought their ght for marriage
equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Other
standout
documentaries

included Shoot Me, an incisive portrait

of the legendary actress Elaine Stritch
who passed away earlier this year;
Campaign of Hate: Russia and Gay
Propaganda, a searing examination
of the spread of anti-gay sentiment and
legislation in Russia; and, Through a
Lens Darkly, a fascinating exploration
of how photography has shaped the
African-American community, including
LGBT people of color.
There were, of course, a few
disappointments. The highly anticipated
Love is Strange starred John Lithgow
and Alfred Molina as long-term partners
whose lives fall apart when they lose their
rent-controlled Manhattan apartment.
Luminous performances from Lithgow
and Molina could not overcome Ira
Sachss implausible script and slack
direction. Jennifer M. Kroots To Be Takei
failed to create a cohesive portrait of the
actor and activist, and in Citizenfour
lesbian lmmaker Laura Portras and
gay journalist Glen Greenwald failed to
fully question the actions of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
The emerging queer cinema scene
in D.C. has been strongly supported
by a number of marvelous venues and
lm festivals. The Landmark Theatres
(on E Street in downtown D.C. and on
Bethesda Row in downtown Bethesda)
and the West Ed Cinema in Foggy Bottom
frequently present LGBT movies, as does
the newer Angelika Film Center Mosaic
in Fairfax. AFI Silver in downtown Silver
Spring often features LGBT works in its
delightfully eclectic mix of contemporary
independent releases and classics from
Hollywood and international cinema.
The acclaimed D.C. Shorts Film Festival,
headed by openly gay lmmaker Jon
Gann, always includes strong LGBT
programming, as does AFI Docs, which
will now be headed by Michael Lumpkin,
who served for more than 25 years as
both executive director of Frameline and
Festival Director for the San Francisco
International LGBT Film Festival. LGBT
lms have also been featured at the new
Middleburg (Virginia) Film Festival.
With sponsorship from the D.C. Center
for the LGBT Community, Human Rights
Campaign and the Washington Blade, Reel
Armations has returned to oer monthly
move nights and other lm events.
The early winter months of 2015 give
LGBT cinephiles in D.C .the chance to
watch some of 2014s best releases
on DVD and to anticipate the exciting
releases of 2015.

2014 year in review: sports

From far-ung tournament wins to strong Gay Games showing, local leagues enjoy banner year
By KEVIN MAJOROS
It was another banner year for the
LGBT sports community of Washington.
The clubs have continued their steady
growth and are the shining example of
what a cohesive LGBT sports community
can accomplish.
Twenty teams consisting of 270 players
battled during season nine of the D.C.
Gay Flag Football League in pursuit
of the DCGFFL Super Bowl title. The
TangerQueens (Orange) took out the
Rear Admirals (Navy) in a score of 41-28
in the championship game.
Ski Bums spent 2014 looking for the best
skiing and snowboarding powder around
the United States and other parts of the
world. Upcoming international trips in
2015 include Austria, Japan and Argentina.
National trips to Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming,
Vermont, New Hampshire and New York
are also being booked. This years D.C. day
trip will be to Seven Springs, Pa.
Chesapeake and Potomac Softball

The D.C. Strokes Rowing Club
continued with multiple rowing programs
and hosted the 21st annual Stonewall

YIR: BOOKS

2014 year in review: books

Several LGBT-themed tomes among years best
By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
So many books, so little time.
Its easy to feel that way when
faced with an entire bookstore full of
possibilities. How do you pick? How do
you know whats good?
Start here, with the Bookworms best
of 2014.
Lets start with ction:
Throughout the year, every time
something bad happens, youre reminded
to hug the ones you love. Five Days
Left by Julie Lawson Timmer, the story
of a woman who is at the end stages of a
terminal disease, and a man in another
state who has fallen in love with a child hes
fostering, will actually make you want to do
that. Bring tissues. Thats all Im saying.
My list wouldnt be complete without
my annual nod to noted lesbian author
Emma Donoghue. Her novel Frog
Music, a big story of murder and lust
set in 1870s San Francisco is a 2014
(or anytime!) must-read. Its a gauzy
tale in fact, it seems at times like a
dream, as though the main character,
Blanche Beunon has imagined the whole
friendship she had with Jenny Bonnet and
the reason for Jennys death. Bonus: its
based loosely on a true event.
I almost guarantee that you wont see
The Last Time I Died by Joe Nelms on
any other best of list. Its here because
it was one of those books that just struck
me: Christian Franco, a loser in life
and love, learns that he can re-visit his
childhood by being brought back from
the edge of death. Early trauma left him
with holes in his memory. Reviving gave
him answers. But he had to die again and
again and you wont be able to put this
book down until you know what happens.
They say we all have a doppelganger, and
Recognition by O.H. Bennett is based
on that idea: on a rainy night, as a young
widow heads home to pick up her son, she
sees a beggar who is her late husbands
double. Many years ago, he went missing
and was presumed drowned but did he?
Youll wonder, too.
I loved Charity and Sylvia: A Same-Sex
Marriage in Early America by Rachel
Hope Cleves, not just for the story of two
lives ahead of their time, but for the way
Cleves sets the stage for the tale. We get a
good sense of what life was like in the late
1700s and early 1800s, not just for lesbians
but for every person brave enough to try to
settle a new country, and thats every bit as
interesting as the story of two women who
did something that early Americans didnt
think was even possible.

favorites:
The Baby Boom by P.J. ORourke
will bring back memories for anyone born
between 1947 and 1964. ORourke recalls the
usual things that Boomers will remember
playing outside til dark, getting that rst
color TV but the real appeal comes when
he nds something youve long-forgotten,
and he expounds upon it. This book is like
time-traveling to your childhood.
This seemed to be the year of self-help
books and I cant come up with a better
self-help book than This is a Book for
Parents of Gay Kids by Dannielle
Owens-Reid and Kristin Russo, the title
of which is delightfully self-explanatory
(therefore, easy to remember when

youre in the bookstore). Using a good

amount of common-sense and soothing
talk, this book has a lot of answers for
parents and their kids. And since it sprung
from a popular website, you can nd
more online when youre done reading.
If youve read other best of lists this
year, youve probably found Being
Mortal by Atul Gawande there and
for good reason. Its about the end-of-life,
aging and how medicine perceives both.
Gawande urges readers to take charge
of the end of their lives. Thats powerful
stu in a powerful book.
And lastly, another tie: The Removers
by Andrew Meredith, Smoke Gets In
Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty and The

Skeleton Crew by Deborah Halber all

deal with bodies. Dead ones. The Meredith
book is a father-son memoir in a comingof-age way; the Doughty book is a memoir
about her years working in a crematory
and the Halber book is about how everyday
people spend their time comparing missing
persons lists with online lists of unclaimed
bodies. Theyre all so eective, I couldnt
select only one to recommend.
Is it cheating to put a poetry book
on this ction list? I dont think so
especially when its poetry thats as
much fun as that in Articial Cherry
by Billeh Nickerson. This book is sassy.
Its silly, but spot-on with its observations
and is-it-real-or-not essays in verse.
