An arrest has been made in

the death of Brenda Walker,
49, who was found dead in
her home in Strathmore on
Jan. 6. Glenn Randall, 52, has
been arrested and charged
with first-degree murder and
is scheduled to appear in
Strathmore court on Jan. 20.
First-degree murder is defined as being planned and
deliberate, whereas seconddegree is where killing was
still intentional, but it was not
planned in advance, and is
sometimes considered heat of
the moment.
All I have been advised by
the investigators is they had
reasonable probable grounds
for laying the first-degree murder charge. I understand the
crown was consulted on that
and thats the charge they felt
was appropriate, said Staff
Sgt. Kevin Reilly during a
press conference on Jan. 7.
Strathmore RCMP had received a 911 call from a woman, who from all indications
appears to be Walker herself,
on Jan. 6 at approximately
1:11 a.m. Upon arriving on
the scene a few minutes later
RCMP found Walker deceased
in her home.
The RCMP Major Crimes
and RCMP Identification sections were called in. On the afternoon of Jan. 6 Randall was
identified as a suspect and arrested without incident.
Walker and Randall had
been previously involved in a
relationship, which had ended
in late 2014.
Brenda Walker ended it in
late 2014, the RCMP have no
previous history from either of
those people of any domestic
violence incidents prior to this
investigation, said Reilly.

GHSD looks to expand on communication

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

With the announcement of new schools, and various other
projects, Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) found 2014 to
be a good year.
We undertook a fairly significant parent and community
engagement process last year and we had a great response
from parents across the district, said Bevan Daverne, superintendent of schools for GHSD. Between our face-to-face meetings through school councils and responses to our surveys
that went out we heard from over 1,100 parents. We received
feedback on a number of areas, (such as) technology, our programming, report cards a number of areas.
That feedback has been incorporated into planning for the
2015 year.
Staff at GHSD and on the board are also interested in hearing from the students to find out what they would like to see
that will help them be engaged, happy, enjoying their learning
and doing well academically.
Kids that like going to school and like their school, love
their school, have school spirit, are engaged in their school,
also do really well in exams and it all ties back to whats happening at the classroom and how were teaching and what
were doing in the classroom, said Daverne.
Were looking for a stronger kind of partnership and student voice in our district so we really do want to hear from

our students (and) were looking for ways that will make that
easier for everybody.
The overall goal is to create a plan that will work with students, staff, parents and board members when it comes to
communicating.
Were looking at a communication initiative, and were still
in the planning stages. Its not entirely easy, weve had some
schools that (have already) piloted some direct and easy communication with parents and were looking rolling that out
across the district now.
GHSD wants to tie parent communication in with transportation and busing, in with weather problems and school problems, and other notifications from teachers and the schools so
that its a more immediate and a quicker process to let parents
know what is going on in the event of an emergency situation,
or even just a reminder about parent teacher interviews.
GHSD is still looking to add and enhance various programs
at schools within the division.
Things like dual credit programming, things like some
of our apprenticeship and business partnerships at the high
school level and even some of our co-curricular and other
core programming at the elementary and junior high level.
Were looking at all of those things to see what we can do
to enhance what we have been doing in many areas, said
Daverne.
GHSD wants parents and students to love their schools and
not want to go anywhere else.

YOUR WEEKLY

Relay is back for 2015

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The annual Canadian Cancer Society
Relay for Life will be coming back to
the area this summer. Participation has
been down, and last year resulted in the
event being cancelled. With new leaders
at the helm brimming with fresh ideas,
the event, scheduled for June 13, is sure
to be a success.
Robin Navin has taken over the role
of coordinating the Wheatland County
event.
Navins brother-in-law Peter was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of
30. On Oct. 18, 2013, at the age of 41,
he passed away, leaving behind a twoyear-old son.
2013 was also Navins first year at the
Relay for Life with her team For Petes
Sake, which included 12 adults and two
kids. Together the team raised an amazing $7,585.
This year were going to do a new
format, its going to be a six-hour relay,
versus 12 hours. Its no longer going
to be overnight, so it will run from 5
p.m. to 11 p.m., said Siobhan Doherty,
revenue fund development coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society,
who is also helping organize the event.
We need to have the dusk aspect in
there for the luminary ceremony but we
want to make it a more family centered
event.
I think Strathmore, just with the demographic, needs to be family and petfriendly and surrounded by that, thats
my big goal is to make sure kids feel
welcome, the whole family (feels welcome), said Navin.
Whereas before I think a lot of the
families were left out because of the
overnight aspect and then it just left
it with a lot of younger kids or older
people.

HEALTH ADVICE

Another new thing this year is that

the Relay for Life will be held at Kinsmen Park, which is a pet-friendly, central location.
The town is invited and they can
come see luminaries ceremony, come
light their luminaries, (give) donations and support the teams even if
they arent actually participating in the
event, though we do encourage anyone and everyone to put in teams, said
Doherty.
Both women would like to see it become an event like Canada Day or Family Day where everyone knows family
friendly stuff is happening.
I think if we can really make it a
town-centered event with family, thats
our big thing I think is being a family
oriented event I think taking it from the
12 hour to the six hour will really make
a big difference in that, said Doherty.
For anyone who registers to take part,
there is no minimum fundraising goal,
but there is a suggestion of raising $150.
The next few months will be filled
with finding the volunteers and/or
board members who can help with
planning the event.
It will be held in Strathmore and a
lot of the planning committee will likely
be from Strathmore, but we do encourage surrounding areas to come. We will
be extending invitations to basically all
of the different areas that dont have
their own Relay for Life that might be
interested in coming out, said Doherty.
People that want to get involved in any
way, we encourage them to contact us.
There is no minimum of how many
hours a volunteer should put in; even
just providing ideas and advice, time, or
talent are all appreciated.
More information can be found on
the Facebook page, Wheatland County
AB Relay For Life, or by calling Robin
Navin at 403-703-0057.

Nitroglycerin is a potent dilator of blood vessels

and is used medically to quickly open up blood
vessels to the heart in patients with angina.
The drug can be administered via a spray for
quick relief when angina symptoms begin. Its
important to have a backup canister of the drug
handy in case your current one malfunctions or
is empty.
Should you continue your exercise program
when you have a cold? Generally, if your
symptoms are mostly above the neck, its
probably OK to do moderate exercise. If its
below the neck, and the lungs are involved, its
best to stop your exercise program until you feel
well enough to continue.
The brain reaches full maturity when people
reach their early to mid-twenties. The part of the
brain used for thinking is the last part to mature.
This is why there is much concern about teens
use of recreational drugs which may affect brain
development. It could affect the ability to make
good decisions and doing well in school.

2014: Year of blessing for Rosebud school and director

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

On the last day of 2014, Paul Muir, Education
Director, took time to tell me about the kind of
year it was for him and Rosebud School of the
Arts (RSA). It really feels like a time when God is
opening the floodgates, Muir said, saying, Okay,
Rosebud, this is your time. Youre just going to be
in a time of blessing right now.
On the whole support and donations front, weve had an unprecedented year, he said. Weve had
many many other partners step up
to the plate this year.
Dick and Lois Haskayne made an
unbelievably generous donation,
which, along with a Community
Facility Enhancement grant, paid
off the mortgage on the Mercantile
building. Muir expressed gratitude
that the Haskaynes could see the
thing that was blocking that heart
(of Rosebud) from being able to
actually flourish and do what its
meant to do. BMO and Encana
were also fantastic, he said. Two
families also donated vehicles to
transport students.
Unexpected blessings came through various
challenges RSA faced throughout the year. As the
faculty and board worked together to meet those
challenges, Muir said, he felt the leadership and
the school became even stronger, more united.
This fall had an extra blessing and affirmation
for Muir himself, as Trinity Western University
(TWU) in Langley, B.C. invited him to be Artist-inResidence, teaching acting classes and directing
their Christmas show. I was completely honored
to be asked, he said, and is thankful for his dedicated and talented colleagues David Snider and
Maki Van Dyke, who enabled him to go.
Personally, hes also grateful that, during those
four months, he stayed with an uncle who had
invested heavily in Muirs life when he was a boy.
It really was precious to have that time together
(with my uncle). I wouldnt have traded that for
anything, he said. This has been a chance for me
to give back to him a little bit.
Overall, his time at TWU was a lot of affirma-

tion, he said, as an acting teacher, as a director

and just as someone working as an instructor in
this ... faith-and-theatre kind of world. There were
certainly just lots of affirmations that this is where
Im meant to be. Teaching at TWU also affirmed
that what we are doing as a school here at Rosebud, that its just absolutely right, he said. Were
on the right path.
Coming back, Muir has a clearer perspective of
what needs to be tweaked at RSA
-- revamping the theatre tech program, for instance, and refining the
Acting Programme. With the debt
load gone, RSA is hiring a new recruitment officer and a marketing
manager. Im really excited about
the ways forward from here, in
terms of us redefining who we are
and how we put ourselves out there
in the world, he said.
RSA signed a transfer agreement
with Briercrest College in Saskatchewan in September, so Rosebud students can now transfer more than
a year of classes toward a degree.
Muirs in similar discussions with
TWU, and said, I feel confident that
before the year is out, well have a
similar transfer agreement with Trinity.
In 2014 and every year, Muir said, the richest
blessing is watching students develop. In spring,
second and third-year students took study trips
to New York and Toronto. In spring and fall, the
second-year class performed The Great Divorce
and The Masque of Beauty and the Beast. Three
students produced successful Final Projects, and,
in September, four students graduated as Fellows
of Rosebud School of the Arts.
The greatest joy for Muir and his colleagues
comes from seeing students grow in the small
little ways, moment to moment, day to day, he
said. A break-through in someones acting always
translates into some personal breakthrough. ... Ultimately, as artists, and as human beings, were all
just trying to grow, be more alive, be more present, be healthier, and grow closer to God.
One day it might be some little breakthrough,
but on another day, it might be a big breakthrough, he said. When that stuff happens, all of
us just go, Ah, this is why we do what we do.

UFA parting ways with Bisons

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons are looking for a new title
sponsor starting in the 2015-2016 season.
UFA notified the club that after 18 loyal seasons of sponsorship that they are moving in a
different direction.
We recognized them for 18 years of support.
UFA has been the only title sponsor that the Bisons have ever had, said Bisons GM Wayne Hansen. Were going to start our search, starting in
the New Year, for a replacement title sponsor.
Hansen could not emphasize more how much
of an impact a sponsor has on a hockey team.
A sponsor for us is really important with regards to the visibility of our team. Were a host
team at the Macs, its little things like that, said
Hansen. We know that there is some great companies out there that will have some interest.
Since the notice from UFA, there has been
some expressed interest from sponsors, but it has
just been mainly discussion.
Weve had preliminary conversations with a
couple people. One of the things that we really
wanted to do was to make sure we put a package
together that explained to everybody what it really means to be the title sponsor of the Bisons,
said Hansen. We now have that package thats
ready to go and well be ready to move forward
with that in the New Year.
UFA provided a lot of support to the Bisons,
and the next sponsor, will hopefully do the same.
UFA, for 18 years was a partner with us, they
worked with us fantastically. We did minor hockey clinics and various things with them throughout the year, said Hansen. Its important whoever comes in also has that desire to want to be
visible in the community.

He added that they are not closing their options with any sponsors, but said it would be
beneficial to have a Strathmore sponsor.
UFA and the Bisons have had a terrific relationship for 18 years and we were looking at the
start of the 2014-2015 season. We sat down and
had a conversation with the Bisons about what
the future looked like and we agreed it was UFAs
last year of support, said Richard Peter, spokesperson for UFA.
UFA is looking forward to new partnerships
that will help us just to focus on the areas that
matter most to the members of an agricultural
cooperative.
UFA was very happy to be associated with the
Bisons, but admit it was time to turn their attention to other programs.
Its certainly an important part of the Strathmore community and UFA has always been
happy to be a part of that but what were looking at now for UFA is obviously agriculture and
youth in the community where our members live
and work, said Peter. We have really significant
sponsorships with organizations like Alberta 4-H,
Ag for Life, which is about rural education and
safety.
Peter did not want to echo the notion that UFA
is trying to stray away from sports organization.
No I dont think thats the conclusion. I think
that if you look at where UFA focuses its community investment, its in the areas that matter
for members. The winners for the Get and Give
program, some of the facilities that are getting
the $50,000 of capital are associated with sport,
said Peter.
If you are interested in being the primary sponsor of the Bisons beginning next season, you can
contact Rich Biccum at 403-978-5756 or e-mail
(breorbray71@gmail.com).

A year in Parliament
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Minister of State for Finance, and Crowfoot riding MP Kevin Sorenson reflects back on 2014.
When I look back on 2014 there are two events
that are very emotional for me, the first one I lost
one of my closest friends and colleagues Jim Flaherty our Finance Minister, said Sorenson.
The call came in that morning, April 10, with
news that the ambulance was at Flahertys house.
Sorenson said he, and other colleagues, had
been hoping that Flaherty would be able to retire
and spend time with his wife and kids. The fact
that he was taken was a very emotional time for
Sorenson because Flaherty was such a good friend
and colleague.
The other thing of course when I think back
on 2014 was the shooting on Parliament Hill and
that morning when sitting in the caucus room with
175 of my colleagues and all of a sudden the shots
rang out and just the fear that I think we all had,
those are the two big events that I remember, but
2014 in spite of all that (was) a good year.
Sorenson said 2014 was a productive year on a
couple of different fronts.
As Minister of State for Finance for Canada, I
am very pleased with the way our economy has

grown. Weve laid out measures in our last budget to focus on job creation and now we see the
numbers that since 2009 in the lowest part of the
recession weve helped create 1.2 net new jobs in
Canada, said Sorenson.
Between 80 to 90 per cent of that are full time
jobs in the private sector. There have also been
new tax measures put into place for families, and
the investment in infrastructure and other areas is
part of why Canada is seen as having one of the
strongest economies.
A few other major events stand out from the past
year. The stand Canada took against Russia when
they went into the Ukraine, and the one the Prime
Minister took with Vladimir Putin stand out to Sorenson, as does the principal stand Canada has
taken against ISIS/ISOL and evil.
We continue to work with our allies, were involved in air strikes against the ISOL targets, they
have taken over certain oil fields and they have
ammunition storage facilities that we continue to
hit and we work together with our allies on that,
said Sorenson.
That is something that will be followed well into
2015.
It has been a fragile recovery since 2008-2009,
and things wont be easy in 2015, especially with
dropping oil prices, but Sorenson said the Cana-

dian government promises to take measures that will continue making things better for families, like helping with job
creation and business growth.
The dropping oil prices are also having an impact on the
federal side of things, but the key is to continue to monitor
things and to plan for any economic impact it may make at
the federal level.
In spite of pulling up to the pumps and seeing the advantage there certainly we know that our social programs and
everything else we spend on is affected by the revenues that
come in, so we have to keep disciplined, we have to make
sure that we manage wisely, said Sorenson.
We recognize, unlike the Liberal leader Justin Trudeau who
says budgets will balance themselves, no, it takes discipline,
it takes focus, it takes hard work and thats what were doing.
Sorenson said the government is going to continue moving
forward with balanced budgets and work on legislation to
continue to protect the streets and communities across the
country.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Disappointment in crossing
To the Editor
I would first like to congratulate Heather Forsyth
for taking on the role of interim leader of the Wildrose
Party. I was disappointed when Ian Donovan and Kerry Towle chose to cross the floor, but was devastated
and angry when nine more including Danielle Smith
crossed. Many of these people I have called friends
for several years. Wildrose MLAs were elected to provide opposition and accountability to the government
and I feel they have fulfilled that role very well.
I have received a lot of phone calls and e-mails as
well as conversations with Wildrose supporters in the
past week and only two people have stated to me that
they think the floor crossers did the right thing.
In response to Jason Hales letter of excuses for
crossing the floor, the opposition does not have to
oppose every effort by the government, but does need
to keep it accountable going forward. This is going to
be even more important in the near future with low
oil prices and reduced revenues. As well there is not
now nor will there be in the near future any danger of
left wing parties succeeding because of vote splitting
on the right.
Jim Prentice has only been Premier of Alberta for a
very short time and with the exception of implementing a few minor Wildrose policies, has done nothing

but make promises. It is far too early to decide if he

is going to be the very kind of Premier I and many
others have worked diligently to see elected.
I also believe Premier Prentice has made promises
that he can not fulfill including a near guarantee that
they will be the PC candidates in the next election.
That decision is made by the local constituency associations and has already received a lot of backlash.
One floor crosser is already regretting is decision to
cross after finding out he is not guaranteed to be the
next PC candidate.
I was disappointed that the Wildrose MLAs called
in and listened to Preston Manning who is now apologizing for giving them bad advice. Some of the floor
crossers made their decision after listening to Mr.
Manning.
Alberta got into trouble because we had no credible
opposition for most of the first 40 years of PC rule.
Wildrose has worked very hard and very effectively
to change that sense of entitlement. I believe that the
floor crossers were outsmarted by Premier Prentice
and crossed the floor for personal gain and will come
to regret their decisions.

Bringing back the Real Deal

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Real Deal Band, an
eight-piece band out of Calgary, will be back in Strathmore on Feb. 14. The band
has been a returning favourite for three years, always
putting on an energetic show
that never gets old.
The people treat us so
well we are honoured to be
asked back. They also appreciate live music, which
is always encouraging, said
John Lacey, spokesperson
for the band, and a founding
member of the band.
Lacey said the band has
been gravitating a bit more
to blues material, but otherwise there have been no
significant changes in what
they do, and how they play
it since the last show.
One thing new on the Musical Arts Societys side of
things is anyone who buys
tickets before Jan. 15 will be
entered into an early bird
prize.
Its about a $300 package
for those that buy early, said
Linda Storkson, Strathmore
Musical Arts Society president.
It is a night at the Rocking R Ranch, two bottles of
wine and also dinner for two
at The Station.
Tickets are available at Pro
Water, Marlin Travel and Assist Business Centre. Theyre
$50 each and include a roast
beef dinner at the Travelodge. The cash bar opens at
6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and
the show at 8 p.m.
At each show the Musical
Arts Society likes to bring in
young, local talent to showcase themselves and to open
the show for the main act.
On Feb. 14 Lilli Furfaro will
once again be that musician.

Sponsors still needed for 55 Games

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

With the snow on the
ground it may be hard to
believe, but it wont be too
long until the Alberta 55
Plus Summer Games comes
to Strathmore. The Alberta
55 Plus Summer Games Society along with the Town
of Strathmore, Alberta Sport
Connection, Alberta Government and the Alberta 55
Plus Association will run the
games.
Since the announcement
that Strathmore won the bid
to host the Games the Society has been hard to work
preparing and planning. One
of the hardest, and most essential things needed for an
event this size, is sponsorship.
Our total budget for the
games is $1.3 million. So far
local sponsors have come on
board to the tune of about
$536,000. We have had such
a great response so far from
the community, said Cave

Starling, Friends of the

Games director.
To date, with other funds
that have been committed
through Casinos and government grants, we are about
at $800,000 but still have a
long way to go to attain our
$1.3 million.
There are different sponsorship levels available and
many ways that businesses,
organizations and individuals can get involved and
help out.
We accept any type of
help we can get for the
games. Besides cash donations, we accept gift in kind
donations as well. Gift in
kind donations are supplying a budgeted item, offsetting the expense that we
would have to otherwise
pay, said Starling.
For example, Precise Vacuum Services, a local supplier
of vacuum cleaners, vacuflo
systems and repair services
came to the aid of the society by supplying them with
a vacuflo system for their of-

fice free of charge. Strathmore

Ford has also come on board,
supplying transportation for the
Games.
Thanks to their support, and
that of many others, those are
things that the Society doesnt
need to worry about purchasing.
There has also been confirmation that one company will
supply all of the volunteer
shirts, but details are still being
worked out before a name will

be released.
As for other opportunities we
have event sponsorships available as well as the closing ceremonies, said Starling.
Also we are hosting Britains
Finest, one of the worlds top
Beatles tribute bands and are
looking for a sponsor for this
huge event.
For more information about
sponsoring in any way contact
Bruce Bryan at 403-934-1235,
or Bruce Thomson at 403-934-

Theres also one other great
way to help out, and one that
could win you a vacation. Until April the Society is hosting
a raffle featuring 12 prizes of
$5,000 travel vouchers. Every
ticket holder will have 12 chances to win one of these trips.
Tickets sell for $100 each and

Rosebud founder shares

year-end message
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

For LaVerne Erickson, founder of
Rosebud School of the Arts and Rosebud Theatre, it was a busy, yet fulfilling
year.
After spending months of 2014 recovering from back surgery, Erickson
started a new project this fall: teaching a course on rural community-based
tourism at Hope College in Drumheller.
The course has no Canadian textbook
available, but with his experience including founding Rosebud School and
Theatre, Canadian Badlands Passion
Play, and Chemainus Theatre: and serving as Alberta Travel Ambassador, Erickson acknowledges, Im like a living
textbook of what is to be done.
He hopes the course will result in a
new crop of rural tourism enterprises
in Alberta.
Erickson emphasizes his concern for
rural Albertan life.
An ongoing challenge (I see) is the
decline of rural population, and the effect that it has on our sense of community and wellbeing as a country,
he says. The young people that grow
up in Rosebud either they have to
be entrepreneurs and figure out something they can do here, or else they go
to the city. We spend our families energy raising bright young people and
then we lose them to the city.
Besides the economic impact, I think
there are a lot of moral implications,
he says, because of the values that we
have (in rural areas) that come from us
being Christ-like to one another.
When he talks about being Christlike, he says people often protest,
youre trying to push Christianity.
But his point is simply that wed all
do better if we lived the way Jesus did.
Thats who we want to be like, he
says, because if were not like that, our
societys going to fall apart. if were
not truthful and honest and caring.
If my focus is on myself and my
wealth, and my little circle of friends,

LaVerne Erickson, founder of Rosebud School of

the Arts, shares his reflections of 2014.

Laureen F. Guenther Photo

it becomes self-defeating. On the other

hand, if we invest ourselves in others,
we forget about ourselves and were
building something thats going to be
handed down.
Everybody who comes (to Rosebud),
we want them to have some sense of
belonging. So many people dont feel
like they belong anywhere.
So in 2015, were going to have some
work-bees here, he said. So theyre
maybe going to come and plant trees
and build a gazebo.
Theyre also exploring the feasibility
of a community garden.
Jesus drew a circle of love so big
it took in the whole world, he says.
Communities are big circles of love. So
thats my year-end message. The older I
get, the more important that is.
Erickson mentioned friends, neighbors, even former students, who passed
away or received serious diagnoses in
2014.
That and turning 71 himself also
shapes his perspective on the year
ahead.
If were getting to the end of (life),
we have to express our appreciation for
one another, he says. If theres something that needs to be resolved in our
relationship, lets be truthful and honest
and pursue that and make sure this all
comes to the kind of conclusion that it
should.

Hardworking herd
seeing results at Macs
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
UFA Bisons vs SSAC Athletics
Dec. 29 Max Bell Centre
The UFA Bisons were left searching
for answers after Athletics goalie Matt
Berlin turned in a stellar performance
as he stopped everything the Bison
threw at him.
The
Herd
was able to
score two late
power
play
goals
from
Shane Fraser
and
Austin
Cameron, but
lost 4-2.
Assistant coach Sandy Henry admits
if the Bisons capitalized on some early chances the outcome of the game
would have been different.
I thought maybe really early in the
game we had a significant number of
chances and for whatever reason didnt
finish them. (We) didnt do that extra little thing it takes to finish pucks
against a good goalie, said Henry. I
think eventually we lost a little of the
momentum because we couldnt get
that to go in, and maybe a little bit of
frustration with how the games going,
youre working hard getting chances
and not getting results.
The Athletics, who were playing their
fourth game in four nights, played the
game simple and buried their chances at pivotal times whereas the Bisons
could not keep pace.
I think we got off our game thinking about feeling sorry for ourselves a
little bit and in 60 minutes of hockey,
theres not any time to feel sorry for
yourselves because you get behind the
eight ball. They continued to score on
their chances, said Henry. I was happy that we gutted up, we got one, if
we couldve got that one earlier in the
game and it wouldve created a different momentum for us.
The Bisons were noticeably making
Berlins job easy, as they did not get
enough traffic in front of him as a lot
of the shots were coming from the perimeter.
We talked about our net front presence in the offensive zone, it wasnt
good enough. Goalies in this league, if
they see pucks from 30 feet out, theyre

SPORTS

hard to beat, said Henry. In the third

period we got that traffic and I think
we got some pucks through and they
had a chance to go in.
UFA Bisons vs Tisdale Trojans
Dec. 30 Father David Bauer Arena
The surging Tisdale Trojans gave the
UFA Bisons all they could handle in the
final round robin game.
Despite having a 3-1 lead after
two periods, the Bisons were determined to not let this one slip away
and held on for a 3-2 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
I think it was a lot of good,
tough play and a lot of guys really trying their best, so when you
do that, you do survive, said head
coach Dan MacDonald.
The Bisons were able to sustain
an early lead and battled hard against
a
resilient Trojan
team.
Its
always
our
plan,
we
w a n t e d
to
initiate
ever ything
and thats
what makes us a good team, said MacDonald.
I thought we forechecked really well
and our defensive zone play was very
good and we had some good goaltending, so when you add all that up and
we had a chance to be successful.
There were times when the Bisons
had to make some adjustments but
they always picked up their man skating back into their zone.
The biggest thing was picking up
the right guy when we came back and
thats something we havent done real
well this year but we did it well today.
If you focus hard on what youre supposed to do and what your responsibilities are, thats what allowed us to
overcome the thrust they had, said
MacDonald.
Fraser, Trgve Many Guns and Gary
Haden scored in the win.
FA Bisons vs Calgary Buffaloes

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings are Back!

The Bisons were down 3-0 to the Buffaloes halfway through the game, but
turned it up a notch once they found
their legs.
I think we didnt get out of the gate
quite how we wanted. I dont know if
we thought we were giving them too
much respect, said assistant coach
Sandy Henry. We didnt seem to be finishing too many checks and were trying to do a little bit too much with the
puck.
Will Conley was able to make it 3-1 by
roofing a shot over the Buffaloes goalie
Nick Sanders in tight with 3:21 left in
the middle frame and gained some momentum back going into the third.
We came back and regrouped, I
thought our second period got considerably better and in the third we were
the better team, said Henry.
It appeared the Buffaloes had sat
back on the puck the rest of the game
and thats where the Bisons kept pressuring them and kept the fans on edge
in the later stages of the game.
Gary Haden snapped one blocker
side to inch closer to tying the game
at 8:52 of the final period, and two
minute later, Barrett Sheen got one
through traffic from the point to tie
the game.
The Buffaloes caught a break at
their own blue line and went down
on a three-on-one, and Damon Porter finished it by chipping it over Kurtis
Chapman to win it 4-3 with 7.1 seconds
left.
At the end, yeah a little bit of a bad
hop off our defensemen at their blue
line, (the) stick gets knocked out of his
hands, he takes a second to pick it up.
Weve kind of have it plugged up in the
neutral zone but not quite and then they
make a play, said Henry. We didnt
quite have enough to win the game and
in the same respect, its a great step for
our team, were just continuing to show
that resiliency and thats just basically
work ethic.
The Bisons worked hard through the
duration of the tournament and Henry believes that is only going to make
them stronger going
forward.
We were happy
with the whole tournament. I think our team
made some steps again
and thats what were
looking for in the big
picture because our
guys are getting better
everyday, said Henry.

Strathmores
Team Jones junior
provincials bound
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Strathmore-based Team Jones,
consisting of McKenna Jones, Krista
Shortridge, Jessica Koch and Hannah
Airey, is currently participating at the
Junior Curling Provincials in Grande
Prairie from Jan. 7-11.
Shortridge is hoping the team will
lean on experience to have success in
the tournament.
I think were a pretty experienced
team, this is our first year being together as a team, said Shortridge. I
expect us to do well, Im hoping we
place in the top half.
This the first time that the team has
competed in the junior age division
and the team has adjusted well.
Its our first year in this age division. So juniors are from ages 18 to
21, and three of us on the team are
18 and one member on the team is
13, she is playing well above her age
category, said Shortridge.
There will be a lot of familiar faces
that the team is curling against and
they know they will have to be on
top of their game
Team Jones earned a spot in provincials two months ago by playing
in a draw format against other teams
at play downs in Calgary.
Theres an event called Junior
Southern Play Downs and it was held
at the Calgary Winter Club. You compete against different teams and the
Top 3 teams make it to junior provincials and there were about eight girls
teams, said Shortridge.
In the provincials, the team will
play five other teams and place in the
Top 3 if they have hope of going to
the national championship
The girls want to play well but
know that in order to that, they have
to enjoy playing the sport.
To play well, you have to make
sure youre having fun and the one
thing I dont want to do is look back
and not be able to say I didnt have
fun, said Shortridge.
If the girls can make it through
provincials, then they will play in the
National Junior Championships from
Jan. 24 to Feb. 1 in Cornerbrook, NL.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The New Year hasnt been too kind
to the Wheatland Kings so far, as they
have dropped all three games to begin
2015.
The team was just outworked in a 7-2
loss to the Medicine Hat Cubs on Jan.
2, and held their own for most of the
game in a 5-0 loss at home to the No. 1
ranked Blackfalds Wranglers on Jan. 3.
Head coach Jeremy Blumes is confident that the boys are working hard to
get out of this funk that they are in and
to stay positive.
I thought in our game against Medicine Hat we got outworked and their
special teams was better than ours and
the better team won that night, said
Blumes.

Brett Dumaine and Lucas

Jones scored in the defeat.
I think (Saturday) we did

a better job of playing as a

team and staying positive
and sticking to a game plan
and I thought we executed
that well, he said. A team
that leads our league in goals
for, theyre pretty opportunistic and they buried their
chances.
He would liked to have
seen more of a battle around
the Blackfalds net in finding
those rebounds.
I wouldve liked to see us
get more second and third
rebound attempts. I think he
had 30 to 35 shots and thats
pretty good work to get a
shutout, said Blumes.
I think we needed to do a
better job of finishing when
we did get inside their zone.
We need to make our opportunities count.

REDEEMING THE TIME

Back in 1967, experts predicted
that by the turn of the century
technology would have taken
over so much of the work we do
that the average American work
week would be only 22 hours
long, and that we would work
only 27 weeks a year. As a result,
one of our biggest problems
would be in deciding what to do
with all our leisure time.
Well, I dont know about you, but
that prediction certainly missed
the mark as far as my life is concerned! In fact, most of us seem
to be very busy. We never have
enough time. Time is something
that we want most, but we use
worst.
So here we are, a few days
into 2015. Will we make any
better use of our time this year?
I believe that Ephesians 5:15-16
provides the secret of a wise
time management: 15 Look
carefully then how you walk,
not as unwise but as wise, 16
redeeming the time, because the
days are evil.
Apostle Paul is warning us to
watch how we walk, in other
words how we behave this
year that we just entered. He
encourages us to walk as wise
not as unwise. Well, the question

that you might have is: what

does it mean to walk or behave
as wise? Paul does not live
his readers unclear about his
warning. He clarifies for us what
it means to walk as wise.
In order for us to walk or behave
as wise we need to redeem the
time. This phrase means to buy
up all the time (every opportunity that God gives you) of our
remaining life on the earth so
that you might set it free. The
question is, set it free from what?
We need to set our time free from
waste by making the most of
every opportunity. It means that
we should stop wasting time and
take advantage of every opportunity possible to serve the Lord. It
means to rescue or recover our
time from waste in order to use it
for great and important purposes.
So, in order for us to use our time
wisely in 2015 we need to take
charge of our own time. I encourage you to make a commitment
to invest your time in something
useful and worthwhile in 2015.
As you do that you will redeem
the time and prepare yourself for
eternity.

lead 10 minutes later as Cole

Busslinger capitalized from
Farmer and Bilesky at 3:27 of
the first to make it 2-0 Chiefs.
The Venom were able to tie
it up with a couple of quick
power play goals to open up
the second.
Chris Rebeyka was able to
restore the lead for the Chiefs
as he found the back of the
net at 6:36 but a mere minute
and half later Medicine Hat
scored to tie the game once
again.
Jason Hobson was able to
regain the one goal lead going into second intermission
and James Farmer capped off
the win with an insurance
marker in the third.
In another tightly played
game against the Okotoks
Oilers the next night, the
Chiefs opened the scoring as
Busslinger fired one home at
the 7:12 mark of the first.
Okotoks was able to tie it
in the second to make for
an exciting third, where the
Chiefs got one from Hobson
and Farmer to seal the win.

The Chiefs will play their

next game on Jan. 10 versus
Sylvan Lake Lakers (6 p.m.)
at the Hussar Arena.
WARRIORS PICKING UP
POINTS
The Wheatland Warriors
salvaged a 4-4 road tie with
Sylvan Lake on Jan. 3.
The local bantam double-A
team kept pace with the first
place Lakers, as they are only
five points back.
Tarun Fizer opened the
scoring for the Warriors at
8:46 of the first before the
Lakers replied with one of
their own 20 seconds later to
knot it at one after one .
Tyler Skehar, Hassan Akl
and Tanner Boutin scored in
the second to make 4-1 Warriors going into the third.
Unfortunately, Sylvan Lake
sustained a late rally with
three goals to tie the game.
The local bantam doubleA team will play on Jan. 9
at Strathmore Family Centre
versus the Southwest Rockies
(8:15 p.m.).

BRAVES PUT ON A CLINIC

Keith Klemmensens squad is continuing their consistent offensive output
as they laid a thumping on their opponents by identical 12-2 scores in consecutive games.
In the first game against Airdrie on
Jan. 3, it was Kyle Bray and Kyle Crnkovic leading the way with hat tricks for
the Wheatland Braves.
Other players that scored for the local double-A peewee team were Kage
Yellowfly with two, while Mo Hakim, Tristan Zandee, Nolan Bailey and
Brayden Kapty rounded out the offence.
The team had period leads of 9-0 and
12-0 before Airdrie broke Jackson Berrys shutout with two in the third.
Crnkovic continued his play into
the next game in Lacombe with four
goals, Zandee had two, while Bray, Max
Kathol, Max Schafer, Adam Kirkpatrick,
Anson McMaster and Tegan Skehar
each added one.
The Braves will be back in Airdrie to take on the Lightning Red (1:45
p.m.) on Jan. 10 before returning to the
Strathmore Family Centre to face off
against the Red Deer TBS (5:00 p.m.)
on Jan. 11.

Bisons rolling to start 2015

The puck movement appeared to be
too much for their opponents and the
Bisons were able to use their strengths
against the smaller teams
I like the way we moved the puck so
we get opportunities at the net. Were
getting 30 shots a game and thats
something we werent doing earlier in
the year, said MacDonald.
The win against the Northstars gave
the Herd some breathing room in the
standings and have second place in site.
It gives (us) a couple of points on
them and it makes it tougher for them

Hockey Day in GA excitement builds

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The sixth annual Hockey Day in GA
will take place on Feb. 7 at the brand
new outdoor rink in Gleichen.
Were going for tradition at this
point. It will be our sixth annual, we
are expecting hopefully an upwards of
100 kids and play three shinny-style
games, said Celeste Pirie, event coordinator.
The opening of the outdoor rink will
be one of the highlights of the day; it
will be officially opened in a ribbon
cutting ceremony.
Were going to be unveiling in a
grand opening, our new permanent
structure outdoor rink, I believe were
going to have a little ribbon cutting
thing and to thank our sponsors. Weve
had everybody from local people volunteer to put it up, to Hockey Night in
Canada giving us thousands of dollars
to invest in it, said Pirie.
Its kind of nice were on their radar
in that respect.
There have been professional players that have come out to participate
at Hockey Day in GA in the past and
there is the possibility of them returning this year.
Hockey Alberta is working on that,
theyre the ones that we partner with to
bring those guys in and as of yet they
havent let us know who, said Pirie.
The Gleichen Pond Hockey League
makes a point of planning Hockey Day
in GA every year around the national
hockey day that is hosted by Hockey
Night in Canada so they can expand
the event.
The timing hasnt been an accident,
weve timed it around that and as its
gotten bigger. Weve been able to do a
few more things. Hockey Alberta has
recognized the growth of the event and
come on board a little more and its
hopefully going to at least be as good
as last year, said Pirie.

The UFA Bisons started off the New
Year with a pair of home wins and gaining four valuable points.
The local triple-A midget team was
able to shoot up to third in the South
standings with a 4-2 win over the Leduc
Oil Kings on Jan. 3 and a 5-0 shutout
win over the Calgary Northstars on Jan.
4.
Were doing things that we really
worked hard at and its come together
for us, said head coach Dan MacDonald. Were moving the puck well, were
going to the net well .We have a real
strong belief in how good we can be, so
those are all the positives.
