Friends and family were shocked to hear

that Glenn Randall, 52, a man they describe as sweet, caring and a give you the
shirt off his back kind of guy, has been
charged with first-degree murder of his exgirlfriend Brenda Walker, 49.
Walker was found in her Strathmore
home Jan. 6 by Strathmore RCMP shortly
after a 911 call was received by the detachment. Later that afternoon Randall was
taken into custody without incident. They
had been dating, and according to Walkers blog were happy together, but due to
some outside issues the pair called it quits
before Christmas.
Jessica Grove has known Randall for
over 20 years, and through him met Walker.
He was just super caring, which sounds
weird now, but like overly loving. He would
bend over backwards to help anybody, go
out of his way sometimes to give people
what he didnt have. So its obviously hard
to believe for anybody that knew him well,
what happened, said Grove.
Then we met Brenda of course and she
seemed to be his perfect match. She was
equally sweet and thought the world of
him, and he thought the world of her and
they just seemed so perfect together. She
was really sweet and really smart. She was
pretty grounded.
Lyndsay Ratson, who also knew the couple, agreed with Grove. She had also met
Walker through Randall, and instantly the
two women hit it off.
She was a constant inspiration to me,
said Ratson.
I had just gotten into business for myself and trying to have success, not just in
business, but in life, and so with her life
coaching, for a person who couldnt have
possibly been better for it, she was just always there to lend an ear and offer help to
anybody. You really appreciate good people when they come into your life and I
just wish I could have had more time with
her.
If I could sum up Brenda its a warm,
kind, selfless, generous, beautiful person
who was a light in any room that she
walked into, who did great things with her
life that will never be forgotten with her
death.

Chamber wants public input

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Strathmore and District Chamber
of Commerce is looking to get public
input about the direction the business
community would like to see the organization go.
On Jan. 22 at the Strathmore Civic
Centre there is an open forum planned
just for that reason.
Its an opportunity to talk about
whats happened in the past and where
the future is going with the chamber
and find direction and so forth from
the community because it is a community-based organization so we want
input from the community to be able
to achieve that, said Pamela Campbell,

Chamber president.
The Chamber does have a directive
ready to be released, but would first
like to consult with the public to ensure the community wants and needs
are similar to those outlined in the directive.
We cant do anything in a forward
motion without the community support, the business community support
period. Were really excited and hope
that lots of business owners and people
within the community, whether theyre
business owners are not, are there to
attend and help us to make it so its
amazing, said Campbell.
This will help provide additional direction to the directive and ensure that
what members of the chamber board

Nightly:

think the community wants is actually

what the community wants.
If your business is not a member of
the chamber yet, this is a way to find
out more about what it is, and what its
offering, and sign up. For those who
are already members dont forget to renew your membership, get out there,
and have your voice heard.
The evening will also be a continuance of the town hall meeting hosted
by Wheatland Business Women in October of 2014.
At the time there had been a request for a second meeting to discuss
thoughts and ideas that had been
brought forward.
The forum will be held at 7 p.m. on
Jan. 22 at the Strathmore Civic Centre.

Families, friends devastated by tragedy

Continued from Page 1

Both women remember the morning
the news broke.
I went uh oh, thats Brendas area, so
I messaged her and said hey, this craziness is going on in your area and she
never messaged me back. I messaged
Glenn and said hey, whats going on?
and he never messaged me back, said
Grove.
As the day went on and more details
were emerging she was getting more
concerned, and then was shocked to
find out it had been her friend Brenda.
Then I was in denial like oh, it
couldnt have been him, it had to be
someone else, theres no way it could
have been him, it could have been
someone different, just coming up with
a million different scenarios. Then when
I found out it was him it was just complete sadness, I couldnt believe that
would ever be the outcome for those

two people, not in a million years, said

Grove.
Ratson had also sent a text to Walker
to make sure she was okay. She never
received a response. She couldnt believe the news when she heard that it
involved both Walker and Randall.
Complete total disbelief and shock
because it wasnt Glenn, it was the
furthest thing I ever, ever, ever could
have imagined that he could do. My
first initial reaction was my God, they
must have the wrong person. It was the
same thing with Brenda as well, this is
a dream, this isnt right, it couldnt possibly be Brenda, said Ratson.
Even trying to fathom, put two and
two together, on what could have possibly made Glenn snap was just beyond
any realm of comprehension because it
was so not Glenn, he was the kind of
person that would give you the shirt off
his back even if he didnt know you.
Friends and family are still trying to

understand what happened, knowing

they never fully will.
There are a lot of close friends and
family and everyone is trying to process it, and everyone is trying to get the
details and everyone is trying to figure
out what happened. In the end the results are the same, and even in our right
minds, if we knew the whole story and
every detail I still dont think we would
understand why, I dont think anybody
will, said Grove.
The only person that knows what
was going on in his head is Glenn, and
now he is going to have to live with this
for the rest of his life, the fact that he
murdered a woman he loved, and that is
something I know he will struggle with
and never ever forgive himself for, said
Ratson.
My heart goes out to his entire family
because theyve lost as well right now.
Randall is scheduled to appear in
Strathmore court on Jan. 20 at 9:30 a.m.

Residents have 48 hours to clear snow

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

As with every winter the snow seems
to bring forward different complaints
and issues, from going over budget
with snow removal to walks not being
shoveled. On Jan. 7 the discussion of
sidewalk snow removal was brought to
council.
The current bylaw states that residents and businesses have 48 hours
to clear snow from the sidewalks lining their property. If they do not abide
by this, and a complaint is called in to
Municipal Enforcement, a bylaw officer will attend the property, create a
file, and call a contractor to come clear
the snow, with a $100 bill going to the
homeowner.
Resident Amanda Spyce made a request to council to see if a warning
system could be put into place instead.
She had been ticketed in November and
said she had a hard time believing the
amount of snow in front of her house
warranted a $100 fine.
I am very confident that if the bylaw
officer had informed me that I had to
remove snow/ice within 24 hours that
this would have been a lot more effective and a longer term solution than a
fine, said Spyce in a letter to council.
She continued on to say that with
a fine process it is hard for people to
know what the expectations are for
snow removal, especially since it appears that the bylaw is being inconsistently enforced.
Kevin Taylor spoke on behalf of Municipal Enforcement at the meeting, explaining that this is not a fine; it pays for
the administration and contractor fees.
In the past there had been a ticket fine - written to the homeowner, placed
on their door. The next chance the officer would have to get back to that
residence, if they noticed the sidewalk
wasnt done another ticket was issued.
It could turn into a long, drawn out process often ending with no resolution,
and sidewalks still not cleared.
It was taking too long to get the sidewalk cleared of snow and ice. With the
bylaw ticket, most did not get paid,
said Taylor.
Under this bylaw we get sidewalks
cleared and cleaned within 48 hours
after snowfall to make it safe for sidewalk users. We do patrols checking on
the sidewalks, we receive citizen complaints on sidewalks not being cleared
and on each case that we have a call,

or when we recognize that the sidewalk

needs to be cleared photos are taken of
the residence and the sidewalk, a file is
created on each address and then the
contractor is called to come out and remove the snow.
The sidewalk needs to be cleaned
right down to the cement otherwise users such as the elderly, people in wheelchairs, mom and dads pushing strollers,
it makes it very difficult to be going
through the sidewalk if its not cleared
down to the cement.
In Calgary the bylaw is complaint
based. People have 24 hours after the
snowfall to clear their sidewalks. If a
complaint is called in they will receive
a warning, and the next step is to send
a crew out to do it and the homeowner
will be billed. Chestermeres bylaw is
exactly the same as what Strathmore
has in place.
The amendment to the bylaw happened in the spring of 2014. Taylor said
in January to March there were 31 bylaw tags attached to the door, none of
them were paid and sidewalks werent
cleared.
After the changes, from November to
December there were 100 files, and all
were cleared the same day as contact.
Councillor Bob Sobol read an e-mail
into the minutes written by Cherie Coe,
who was unable to attend the meeting.
She was opposed to the idea of changing to a warning system.
With home ownership comes responsibility, it is not your neighbours
responsibility, nor the towns to ensure
your sidewalk is cleared. If you cant
find the time to take care of your responsibility then I suggest you support
the local economy and hire it done. I
think in the long run it would be a lot
less expensive then fine after fine, said
Coe.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk brought up
a complaint some residents have voiced
in the past: if the residents are expected to do it in 48 hours, then the town
should be under the same guidelines
too.
How do we handle that, if were going to charge them, what about us, said
Grajczyk.
Taylor argued that residences have 20
to 40 feet to shovel in that time frame
versus the countless kilometers that the
town is responsible for.
It is also a matter of liability, so its
not the homeowner who is liable, the
town owns the sidewalks, we would be
liable if someone slipped and fell. Thats

why the Municipal Government Act allows us to pass bylaws to control that. A
municipality cant possibly take care of
all of the sidewalks, said Deputy Chief
Administrative Officer Linda Nelson.
The fact of the matter is everybody
has got a responsibility to do this, including the town and I think the town
for that amount that they have and the
staff that we have, I think we do an admirable job with our pathways and the
areas that we have to clean, said Councillor Bob Sobol.
In the end the suggestion from Spyce
was accepted for information and the
bylaw will remain the same with 48
hours to clear snow, or a contractor will
be called in to remove it for you.

Capsule Comments
Nitroglycerin is a potent dilator of blood vessels
and is used medically to quickly open up blood
vessels to the heart in patients with angina.
The drug can be administered via a spray for
quick relief when angina symptoms begin. Its
important to have a backup canister of the drug
handy in case your current one malfunctions or
is empty.
Should you continue your exercise program
when you have a cold? Generally, if your
symptoms are mostly above the neck, its
probably OK to do moderate exercise. If its
below the neck, and the lungs are involved, its
best to stop your exercise program until you feel
well enough to continue.
The brain reaches full maturity when people
reach their early to mid-twenties. The part of the
brain used for thinking is the last part to mature.
This is why there is much concern about teens
use of recreational drugs which may affect brain
development. It could affect the ability to make
good decisions and doing well in school.

Renaming the LP
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Livestock Pavilion on the Agricultural Society grounds has undergone a makeover, and now
its time to come up with a new name, says acting
President Brad Walls.
We did a bunch of work on the Livestock Pavilion, obviously the name doesnt fit what it is
now so we have a bit of an internal competition
going on with our membership to submit names
for what it should be called, said Walls.
The Ag Society has a joint use agreement with

the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society, which also put funds into the renovation project.
We decided that we would make this more of a
rentable space that people would use for weddings
or birthdays are anniversarys type deal, said Walls.
The facility is open to anyone wishing to rent it.
The naming competition is open to Ag society
members, and will remain open until Feb. 1. Walls
said its a great way to get members reengaged
with the society, and brings back the feeling of being part of a team. There will be advertising in the
monthly newsletter sent out.
Anyone can become a member by calling the Ag
society office, filling out a membership form and
paying a fee.

2015 in Rosebud
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The 2015 season has been announced for Rosebud
Theatre, and once again it is one that promises to make
you laugh, cry, and walk away reflecting on yourself
and your personal journey.
Somewhere under a rainbow, youll find Rosebud.
The plays this season are all about finding yourself in
an unexpected place where miraculous things happen,
said Artistic Director Morris Ertman.
The whole season started with this notion of a journey towards someplace or something that makes us different. Annie Sullivan leaves her orphanage school to
go and take on her very first teaching assignment and
whats so great about that story is that those two people
remained dear, dear friends through their whole lives,
talk about a journey that changes your life and a sense
of destiny too which is kind of what under a rainbow
is about, and its kind of what most of these plays are
about.
The theatre season officially kicks off on March 27
with The Miracle Worker. Its the true story of Anne Sullivan
and Helen Keller. Keller was a deaf, blind and mute girl and
her parents didnt quite know what to do with her.
Annie Sullivan was a
young teacher and this
was her first assignment
and it really is the story
of the miracle of language given to Helen
Keller, said Ertman
Its a really powerful story in terms of the
way its going to feel
on stage, its incredibly
physical and it will be
like watching a battle in
some ways, a battle of
wills.
Also in March, the 10
to 14, the Theatre for

Young Audiences is offering Treasure Island.

The classic childrens tale comes alive with a new
twist.
In this adaptation an acting troupe arrives
at the theatre, all
their props and
costumes
have
been delayed and
theres an audience right in front
of them. Now all of
a sudden theyve
got to improvise
everything, said
Ertman.
The story becomes a clever and
funny adaptation
of the script many
know and love.
On the studio
stage May 6 to
June 20 is Wildwood Fire, by Lauren de Graaf
and Kelsey Krogman. Its the story of June Carter
Cash and Johnny Cash who are going to be performing in Rosebud when Johnny ends up landing himself in the hospital. The show must go on
so Carter, and her mother Maybelle Carter, come
to the stage.
J o h n n y
Cash had a
turbulent life
fighting with
addiction and
this
really
becomes the
personal sojourn of June
Carter Cash.
She intimately
shares in story and song
her fears and
her love and
goes through
a
journey
with the audience about her love for Johnny Cash.
It feels like we just got to share an intimate,
intimate conversation in a hospital waiting room
with a giant, that giant being June Carter Cash,
only shes doing it in concert form because she
didnt know what else to do so she brings the audience in on her story, said Ertman.
This summer will see a yellow brick road leading to Rosebud. From May 29 to Sept. 5 the musical The Wizard of Oz will
be on stage.
It based on
the film, and it
will be a way
for people to
see that well
known story,
but live so it
will feel different
than
the
movie,
said Ertman.
Rosebud is
going to dig
into the story
of the Wizard
of Oz so it will be more than just a trip down
memory lane; its the story about a girl running away from home because she thinks no
one cares.
Every teenage kid thinks somewhere else is
better than home. She winds up getting transported somewhere else, where everything is
really supposed to be much better and she
finds herself and once shes in Oz she wishes
she was home. Because of course she realizes
that home is actually pretty incredible, said
Ertman.
The story will seem fresh, and new and it
will feel like it was made for a 21st century
teenage girl, even though were setting it for
its original time.
This summer on the studio stage, from July
2 to Aug. 29 The Last Train to Nibroc will

win over your

heart.
This is a
beautiful little
witty, twistturning love
story,
said
Ertman.
Its
the
story about
a young man
who is on
leave, hes a
World War II flyer, hes on this train and he wants
to be a writer. He meets this girl who is very religious and wants to be a missionary and she wants
nothing to do with this guy.
Its the story about a rocky romance that winds
up in a place that neither of them expected, and
its beautiful writing. We have two really great
people cast in the show, it will delight and challenge people.
Mass Appeal is making a return in the fall, Sept.
18 to Oct. 24.
Its the story about a very popular priest who
knows exactly what to do to make his congregation happy, hes old and a little bit cynical - a just
give them what they want kind of guy.
One day hes delivering a sermon on the ordination of women and hes delivering a very carefully worded sermon from the pulpit that digs into
the ordination of women and the Catholic Church
20 years ago, said Ertman.
Its a hot button issue and a young seminary
student challenges him, one he has been put in
charge of to
teach
and
train in the
ways of being personable.
The
s t u d e n t
thinks you
need to give
it like it is
and speak
the truth.
If
people
liked
Tuesdays
With Morrie
theyll love
this
show,
its got a
similar, interpersonal dynamic that theyll like,
said Ertman.
Next Christmas the Toad of Toad Hall is returning to the hamlet in A Wind in the Willows Christmas in Rosebud.
The production will feature the music of John
Rutters Three Musical Fables.
This show will be a cross between Monty Python, Gilbert and Sullivan and the most heartfilled and heartfelt Christmas feeling youll ever
get in the theatre, said Ertman.
The tale begins with Toad enjoying a wild and
reckless car ride, which ends with Toad arriving
home just in time for Christmas Eve. The evening
sees Badger, Ratty, Mole and their orchestra go on
a storytelling journey.
One such tale is of the reluctant dragon, and
another of monks and their singing donkeys.
Theres music in it thats so sublime that youll
feel like Christmas has just
arrived, said
Ertman.
Tickets are
on sale for the
season
and
can be purchased by calling the theatre

shows.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Lets give Alberta a chance to shine!

To the Editor
I have been reading all the negative comments directed at the Wildrose MLAs who crossed the floor,
and can honestly say what on earth would you have
them do?
Start at the beginning when the Stalmach and Redford fiascos hit the legislature! We needed a party who
would stand up for Albertans and keep the PCs in
check hence the Wildrose Party was formed, to the
joy of all true Conservatives (which is what Alberta is
famous for).
The Wildrose Party and their competent MLAs did
their job! We got rid of Redford and the PC party convinced Jim Prentice to leave his six-figure job and
lead the party! Many would ask, why would Prentice
do that? Because he is a true Albertan, and was convinced that this province could come back to be a
leading force in our great country! He did not come
back for glory, for the PC party or even for money
he came back for Albertans. If you would look at his
history in the federal government you would know
that he is the shining star this province can finally
look to for leadership.
Back to the Wildrose MLAs! The party knew that
they were not going to have any fights in the ledge
because the PCs led by Prentice had all of their poli-

cies and concerns and issues at the forefront of his list

to be fixed for Albertans. Once the majority of the Wildrose caucus (also conservative) saw this they knew
it would be better for their constituents to be a part
of this new age for Alberta and would benefit their
constituents to have an MLA that sat in government
instead of opposition (opposition which they would
have very little to oppose).
I guess that politics and religion will always contain emotion, but really - what do we want as Albertans that will not be accomplished with a government
that is responsible and open to the people? With Jim
Prentice as our leader and MLAs like our own Jason
Hale, I would hazard a guess that all of the negative
readings in the past three weeks, will be put to rest
and those writers will give Alberta a chance to shine
under our (other) Conservative Party and give Jason
Hale the opportunity to give our constituency a leadership role in Alberta. My personal feelings are that I
would much rather have a former Wildrose candidate
running as a PC in our constituency than a Liberal
running as a Conservative. This is Alberta and we do
not want a Liberal representing us!!!!

But the Pat came back, the very Next Year!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So this is either good news for you, or bad;
Im back! Of course, I may not be as regular as before (okay, now that sounded like I need Bran!). I
hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year,
and got to spend time with friends and loved ones.
Our Christmas was a mixed bag, as almost all
of us got sick one after the other. My cold started on Christmas Day, and eventually four of us
got it! The night before, I felt fine. We were playing Ellens game from her cell phone app, called
Heads Up.
Theres nothing like a rousing charade-like game
to bring the family together. However, I did make
a mistake that grossed out my son and daughter.
In this game, a person holds a cell phone with its
screen facing out. On the screen, a statement is
shown, and the others give verbal clues, so that
you can guess each one. Debs category was geography, and the statement was Virgin Islands.
No one was able to get Deb to guess, and finally
before I thought, I blurted out: what your mom
used to be! Both my kids had looks of horror on
their faces, but their mom did get the right answer!
My worst nightmare also came true this Christmas, as Deb bought a wooden book shelf for me
to build. If youre a first time reader of my column,
then you should know Im pretty hopeless in manly building, of pretty much anything! Remember,
Im the guy who built a waterbed frame around a
basement telepost, got stuck on my roof, put charging cables on the wrong car battery posts, blowing
a hole in its top, and put up fence boards in a very
crooked line! So, I struggled away for a long while
building this bookcase. Do any of you other guys
really sweat when you build stuff, because I do!
The thing was finally all built, I was drenched, and
I was faced with a real predicament.
The instructions said there would be eight little
metal pins on which the shelves would sit. In my
little bag of pieces, there were only seven! Heres
my theory: I think that in these various factories that make these kits, theres always one an-

gry worker. Hes not happy in his job, he may be

bored, or he may be feeling like he wants to rebel
against the man. To make it simple, lets call this
worker Dick.
I think that this Dick goes out of his way now
and then, to really stick it to the consumer! Good
old Dick makes sure that every so often, he puts
one less part in a building kit, just to drive us
nuts! Now, I have a bookcase built, but one of the
shelves will not sit properly, because this Dick
ripped me off of one lousy metal part! I havent
been able to convince Debbie of my theory, but I
really believe that some of these companies have
one or two Dicks who are regularly making us
handy men suffer no wonder I get nervous
and sweaty when Deb gives me a building project!
Its no wonder my nerves are shot! Projects like
these, that most guys find relaxing, actually make
me scared to death. It doesnt help that Ive been
a teacher now for 32 years! About a month ago, a
student came up to my desk quietly, dropped her
completed test on my desk, and basically scared
the crap out of me! I mean, I jumped, threw my
pen into the air, held my chest, and all she did was
giggle!
What are you, a ninja? I asked. You should
wear a bell or something who comes up silently
like that, anyhow?
While laughing (nice, eh?) she asked, can I go
to the bathroom?
I sighed, you might as well, cuz I just did!
Ah kids, theyre so cute when theyre causing
you a stroke!
So welcome to 2015! Heres hoping you all
have a great, and healthy New Year, and that my
shattered nerves can start to settle down. And if I
can ever track down that Dick who wrecked my
building project, hes in a lot of trouble!
(Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous
column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high
school teacher, coach, husband and father of two

Give me this Mountain

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The story of Evelyn
Brand, a woman who dedicated her life to missionary
work, will be coming to the
Strathmore Alliance Church
on Jan. 17. Members of
UpsideDown Productions,
which includes local Janey
Swalwell who portrays
Brand, will perform Give
me this Mountain.
Its basically just a missionary biography abut
Evelyn Brand, she is very
inspiring, she became a
missionary when she was
30 and she was a missionary in the hills until she
died at the age of 95, said
Swalwell.
Its really just an incredible story.
The Brand family brought
gospel to a remote part of
India. When Brand lost
her husband she refused
to leave. Her son Paul pioneered leprosy treatment
among Brands hill people.
The performance is free
to attend, but there is a request for donations for the
Strathmore Pregnancy Care
Centre (PCC).
I contacted the PCC to
see if they would like to

have any money collected

from the free will offering
donated to them and then
asked the Strathmore Alliance if we could use the
facility to host the drama,
said Beverly Swalwell.
I was hoping to volunteer for the PCC myself but
have not been able to, so
saw this as an opportunity
to raise money for a local
group in our community.
Earlier that day the drama troupe will be in Gleichen performing What if
at the Gleichen Community
Church.
That one is an interactive play, it tells a lot of
Bible stories and the theme
of the whole play is based
off of a Bible verse that just
talks about how all things
work together for good for
those who love God, said
Janey.
That ones really good
for children and teens,
sometimes, its really good
because it brings a lot of
drama to them and allows
them to be part of it.
The Gleichen performance will be held at 1:30
p.m. on Jan. 17 and is also
free to attend. Give me this
Mountain will be held at 7
p.m. that same evening.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Bill & Joyce Hagedorn

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Bills great-grandfather, Ernst Hagedorn, was
born in 1822 in Bloomberg Lippe, Germany. While
at a young age, Ernst and his brother immigrated
to North America Ernst to Kitchener, Ont. and
his brother to the southern United States. After
marrying Maria Koeppler in 1849, they raised 12
children. Bills grandfather, William Daniel was
born in 1867, in Williamsburg, Ont.
He married Catherine Bieman
in 1890, and they raised seven
children. One of them was Bills
father, Wilfred John, born in
1899 in Paisley, Ont. At age 17,
he left home and headed west
to become a lumberjack in B.C.,
then a farmhand at Mossleigh.
Julia Short, Bills mothers
history has been traced back
to 1842, when her grandfather
Joseph William Short was born
in New Castle, Ont. In 1884 he
brought his family to Calgary by
train, then on to High River by
wagon. In 1885, Bills grandfather Elwood Short was the first
white baby born west of High
River. This was a trying time as
the North West Rebellion was
taking place. Elwood married Edith Robinson in
1907, and they had two girls Bills mother Julia and her sister Hazel (Watson). Grandfather Elwood completed his working career as the Alberta
Wheat Pool elevator agent, and retired from this
position in Strathmore. His mother Julia, attended
Normal School in Calgary, then became a teacher
in Southern Alberta for a few years, ending up
at Blind Creek School, north of Mossleigh. Here
she met Bills father Wilfred, at a country school
dance, and they were married in 1938. They raised
five children.
The eldest was Bill, born in 1943. He attended
school in Mossleigh for 11 years, then took Grade
12 at Vulcan. He furthered his education by attending SAIT in Calgary, where he took a two-year
course in Agriculture Mechanics, and a one-year
course towards his ticket for Heavy Duty Diesel
Mechanic. After this he chose to become a farmer,
and rented half section of land from his father in
1964.
Mary Joyce Gannon was born in Ottawa during
WW2, and raised in the Tri-Town area of N.E. Ontario on the Quebec border, containing the towns
of Cobalt, Haileybury, and New Liskeard.
She graduated from high school in New Liskeard
in 1956, and worked as a secretary in the area until 1960, when she moved to Kelowna, B.C. and
worked for two years, before moving to Calgary in
1962, where she got a job at SAIT. Coincidentally,
Bill was attending SAIT as a student, and without
really knowing each other, they both went on a
SAIT sponsored ski trip to Mt Norquay in Banff.
While toboganning, a group of them came down
the hill, and unfortunately hit a tree stump. Every-

one except Joyce got up, and seeing this Bill and a
friend walked over, picked her up, and carried her
to the bus. Bill likes to tell everyone that he fished
his wife out of a snowbank on Mt. Norquay! They
were married in Calgary in December 1965, and
next spring moved into a rented farmhouse next
door to the farm Bill grew up on. Bill and Joyce
farmed at Mossleigh for the next 35 years before
retiring to Strathmore.
During this time they raised three children David, Jean Anne, and Marilynn who have given
them five grandchildren to enjoy. For 12 years they hosted
off-shore agricultural trainee exchange students under the IAEA
Program. Bill and Joyce were
both active in the Mossleigh
Community, the local Lions
Club, and school activities.
Apart from farming, Bill also
sold Two-way Radio Communication Systems for West Can
Electronics of Calgary, which led
to a 12-year career as a realtor.
He began as a realtor for Century 21 New Bar, and then he
and a group of realtors formed
Aztec Real Estate. This led to a
partnership in building the Best
Western Hotel in Strathmore,
where Bill worked his way up
from maintenance and purchasing, to general
manager. In January 2002, they sold the hotel, Bill
sold his acreage, and he turned in his real estate
and Commissioner of Oaths licenses. He and Joyce
purchased a 34-ft fifth wheel trailer and became
fulltime Rvers for five years. They were fortunate
to have a young couple live in their house to look
after it while they were on the road. As Snowbirds
they spent five years wintering in Arizona. While
touring the southern States, they took part in two
RV Caravan Tours into Mexico, and another two
into Texas. On the first one, they went south of El
Paso, railed through the Copper Canyon to Mazatlan, then ferried across the Sea of Cortez to La Paz,
then drove south to Cabo San Lucas, before heading north to San Diego. The following year, their
second trip took them through Southern Texas to
Hidalgo, then on a 45-day tour to Cancun, Mexico
City and back to Texas. As they both like cruising,
they have completed seven ocean cruises with
Holland America, and two riverboat cruises with
Uniworld. Bus tours also appeal to them, and as a
result they have taken bus trips through England,
Ireland, Wales, Scotland,Germany, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, China, Costa Rica,
Alaska, the eastern and western U.S.
Nowadays, they spend approximately seven
months living at Parksville, on Vancouver Island,
and five months living in Lambert Village, Strathmore. Joyce enjoys quilting, while Bill enjoys fishing in summer, and curling in winter. They both
still enjoy square dancing, year round.
The main change they have seen in Strathmore,
since arriving 20 years ago, is the population
growth.

Rosebud
Presents series
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The lineup of the 2015 shows in the
Rosebud Presents series has been announced, and theres something for the
whole family says executive Director
Adam Furfaro.
Morris and our team have put together another really strong season for theatre goers of all ages, said Furfaro.
Our Rosebud Presents series is introducing many new people to Rosebud
Theatre and shows like The Wizard of
Oz, Treasure Island and The Miracle
Worker are helping us grow a new generation of patrons. We are expecting
close to 40,000 to come through our
little hamlet in 2015.
It all begins with the Wheatland Band.
Performing on Feb. 13 the former Lewis
and Royal have now become a trio, adding Travis Friesen to the team.
What Travis brings to them is another
sweet voice, and all of a sudden these
guys are singing similar material to what
they used to, theyre very entertaining
and accessible, said Morris Ertman,
Rosebuds artistic director.
Whats happened for Lewis and Royal is Travis presence has busted it wide
open, its like all of a sudden theyre
reinvented and all of the things people
love are still there but theres just another really dynamic colour in the group.
March will see the third installment of
the Wingfield Farm series come to the
hamlet. Wingfields Folly will play from
March 18-21.
This man (Dan Needle) is a genius,
his one person shows are just remarkable and so entertaining, I have never
watched anybody that has had such a
command of the audience and timing as
this actor, said Ertman.
Intimate Sunday Afternoons are coming to Rosebud on April 26 and May 24.
Canadian singers, songwriters and authors will be bringing their unique style
to the hamlet featuring artists such as
Cara Luft, and John Wort Hannam.
Another special treat is for those who
are fans of The Shack author William, P.
Young. He will be in Rosebud on Oct. 4
to speak about the book, his experience
since writing it and the upcoming movie
adaptation.
The Shack is a book that was written
for his kids and it wound up making it
to the New York Times Bestseller list for
a couple of years running, said Ertman.
Hes just such an interesting man and
the book is such an interesting book.
Young set out to write this story for
his kids and then all of a sudden some
friends read it and said you should publish this.
And so he did, opting for the self-publishing route to begin with. As more and
more people read the book it became
something that spoke to people. The
book follows the story of Mack a father
of five and his struggle with having lost
a child to a serial killer, and coming to
terms with it and his faith.
It is kind of a wonderful story about
doing something for somebody you
love, your children, and it winds up being a bigger story than what you intended, and thats what I love about this, he
just did this out of his love for his kids
and then it exploded, said Ertman.
Season tickets are on sale for the 2015
shows, and can be purchased through
the Rosebud Theatre Box Office 1-800267-7553. Season ticket holders also
get first crack at tickets in the Rosebud
Presents series. More information can be

County gives back

with in-kind contributions
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland County discussed their annual credits that were
given out in 2014 for in-kind contributions to organizations
at the Jan. 6 council meeting.
The annual report concluded that Accounts Receivable
Credits were split through inspection fees to the Strathmore
Handi-Bus Association, Carseland Fire Department, Dalum
Fire Protection Association, Gleichen District Fire Association and Rockyford Rural Fire Protection Association totaling
$2,582.80.
We do it every year and what ends up happening with that
is CVIP inspections because they are commercial vehicles,
theyre not owned by the county, theyre owned partially by
the association. The county does all the CVIP inspections
and does that as a free service for the fire departments, said
Alan Parkin, Chief Administrative Officer.
So rather than sending it to a garage in Strathmore or Calgary, they just bring it here and our guys do that. We credit
it that on our account to a donation in-kind.
Wheatland County staff prepared the invoices for each association, in following a resolution policy, at the new rate of
$93.92 an hour for the inspections.
Council also approved to have the same credit attached to
the sixty yards of gravel, which was six loads, to the High
Eagle RV Park in June 2014, which totaled $744.98.
The in-kind contribution also covered 300 tons of gravel
that was dumped on 200 to 300 yards of land on June 2014,
which was spread around the Strathmore Seed Cleaning
Plant.
Parkin added that there would be more of these in-kind
contributions coming in at the next couple of meetings.
CAPITAL ASSET THRESHOLD POLICY
It came to the countys attention at a December council
meeting that there was a demand for an increase in the capital asset thresholds in the Tangible Assets Policy for buildings and other structures to $25,000.
Wheatland council had advised staff to review thresholds
that are in the policy already to see if a raise was appropriate.
The motion is to include fire equipment, apparatus and vehicles but council had to factor in that it is critical to choose
a threshold that considers the size of the assets and not the
total value of the assets.
The only thing that was changed on that policy was in
regards to buildings. Previously under that policy anything
that was validated at $10,000 or over would be showing as a
capital asset, said Parkin.
If its under $10,000 then it would just be an operating
item. Lets just say somethings worth $12,000, before it
wouldve been shown capital item so we had to capitalize

on our budget, now itll be on the operating budget.

The addition of the fire trucks seemed to factor in to wanting that increase in the threshold.
I think Rocky View is $100,000 and some of the other municipalities are $50,000. So we bumped it up a little bit and
that was a recommendation from council when we took in a
while back and added the fire trucks because we didnt have
fire trucks on there before, said Parkin.
The change comes after five years of the current policy.

MINOR HOCKEY WEEK

Annually across the country we celebrate Minor Hockey Week.

The week is a way to recognize the sport for its positive influence and benefits to
the community, while also recognizing the people who bring it all together from
organizers to players.

Rockyford Minor Hockey

encourages more kids to play
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The goal for Rockyford Minor Hockey is to
keep the players challenged and to keep kids
playing hockey.
I guess the number one thing in hockey is
to have fun. We got two peewee teams and
atom team, so its kind of in that mid- level
where they start and finish their careers, said
Ryan Seeley, Rockyford Minor Hockey President.
Seeley has seen some vast improvements
since he took over seven years ago and hopes
to increase the associations player enrolment
every year.
We have spurts where we have lots of kids
and then we lost our midget and bantam
teams (and) didnt have enough players. Since
then weve had lots of teams again, but there

were a couple of years where we struggled

just to ice enough kids, said Seeley. We had
to split our peewee and atom team this year
and well have to do it again next year.
Despite having struggles to make teams in
the past, this year they have more players to
make more teams.
Well I think its just a cycle because for a
few years there wasnt enough kids to make
a team. This group that we have coming
through, now we have more than enough
to make a couple teams, said Seeley. Thats
why we had to split, we had too many kids on
one team, but its some of the toughest years
because we have too many players for one
team and not enough for two teams.
Seeley added that the coaches have done
an exceptional job so far this season and will
keep building quality in the Rockyford Minor
Hockey Association.

Hussar Minor Hockey

enjoys increased participation
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The main highlight for Hussar Minor Hockey so far this season has been giving the
young players the opportunity to participate
in a power skating program.
Weve got a full power skating program
going on, so we do that one night a week
from four-year-olds to the oldest being 15,
said Clay Armstrong, Hussar Minor Hockey
board representative. Its not like the old
power skating, theyre in full hockey gear
with their sticks. They do puck drills, like
its a full hockey development power skating
program ran by Sam Miller, she does a lot of
the stuff in Strathmore as well.
Armstrong has been thrilled with the increased number of teams that have been put
together this season.
Weve got three and a half teams playing out of Hussar, which is more than weve
had for awhile, said Armstrong. We have a
midget team, bantam team, novice team and

half an atom team, we split our novice and

atom with Bassano. So half the kids on both
of those team are from Hussar, but we register one team here and one team there just to
keep everybody onside with it.
The goal for the association is to get the
young kids active as much as possible around
the arena in some form of an ice sport.
We basically focus on getting the youth
involved in the arena, skating of some sort,
we do have a couple of figure skaters. We
promote our local teams above all and try to
support them and keep the costs down so
that more people can play, said Armstrong.
He believes that the right coaches were
put into place, as there have been no issues
yet.
Weve got good coaches all the way
through. I dont know how active the board
has to get involved because so far we havent
had any issues, said Armstrong.
Hussar Minor Hockey just wants to see
continuous development and to have teams
make the playoffs.

Promoting more
puck touches
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The 2014-2015 Strathmore Minor Hockey Associations (SMHA) season has been productive so far and
will continue to develop players and coaches, while
enjoying the sport.
According to SMHA President Blair Wilson, the board
is always looking for ways to improve the association.
Some of the things we are always looking for (are)
new ways to teach core development skills in a way
that is fun for the players, said Wilson. There are
several new initiatives that Hockey Canada has spent
a significant amount of time researching, which we
would like to start using as they have suggested.
One of which is a Timbit and Novice program that
utilizes smaller teams and on-ice stations with like
players to promote more puck touches. This allows
our coaching staff to work with like players at each
station and teach skills at the level that benefits the
whole group.
We have attempted this in the current season with
a little push back as it is some new thinking. Other
associations are using it all across Alberta and several
other provinces with great success stories. Hopefully
with some additional instruction to our eager coaching
staff, we can achieve the same success in Strathmore.
There have been a lot of new coaches come on board
and it has been a process to teach them, but there are
many quality coaches in the minor hockey system.
We have new coaches for the young teams so its
a new experience, he said. You never know what
youre getting, but weve got some good coaches.
Strathmore Minor Hockey is also working closely
with Hockey Alberta and the UFA Bisons to bring
courses and clinics to Strathmore for coaching development.
Our teams cant function without well-trained volunteer coaches that we are fortunate enough to have
come out year after year, said Wilson. I cant say
enough how fortunate we are to get such a great group
to lead our teams every year.
The association wants to emphasize the players having fun and to developing every aspect of their game.
Its all about development and fun, I think were accomplishing that. We always hope to bring home some
banners, but it doesnt always happen, said Wilson.
Its not what its about, but it looks like we have a
chance this year to get to the playoffs with most of our
teams.
According to Wilson, there are six Timbit, five novice,
four atom, five peewee, four bantam and four midget
teams (including the three female squads). The three
Wheatland Athletic Association teams and the Wheatland Kings Junior B team are also under the SMHA
umbrella.
In total, there are over 400 registered players in
SMHA.
Our registration numbers have seen a significant increase in the younger age groups, which is a sign of
the towns growth, said Wilson. Most of our teams are
having great seasons, with a high percentage of teams
staged for a playoff run. Bringing home the banner is
an exciting event for any team, but it is not the only
initiative we strive to achieve.

14/15 GLEICHEN POND HOCKEY - TUESDAY EARLY

Wheatland excelling
in elite-level hockey
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Athletics Associations (WAA) goal is to advance players on to the next level of their careers
and to help to further enhance coaching techniques.
WAA President Murray Brown has
overseen the operations of the three
teams peewee, bantam and midget
and so far they are meeting expectations in the 2014-2015 season.
Its run by a bunch of hardworking
board members and we are fortunate
enough to have a lot of alumni back
coaching (and) great coaching all the
way through. I think it shows in our
teams, said Brown. Weve had Keith
(Klemmensen) for the last number
years and he gets all them kids started
(in peewee), so theyre ready to play
elite hockey and its really shown in
our program now, all the way through
from the bottom up.
Browns goal since taking over as the
president this season is to make sure
the players have that confidence with
their development to move to the next
level.
Our goal is put guys to a higher level, thats the goal of double-A is to be
a feeder system for our triple-A teams
and get kids to junior hockey, said
Brown.
He also noticed that at the beginning
of the season that all three teams were

going to be strong throughout their

line-ups and have successful seasons.
I thought through try-outs all
groups were going to be strong and
going into the Christmas break, all of
them are right up top, said Brown.
Usually were not fortunate enough
to have all three of them on top, that
reflects on the kids and our coaching.
The consistent trend of each of three
teams has been a true testament to the
quality of coaching that they have received.
Cody Brown and Justin Fraser (bantam coaches) worked under Keith for
a year, so they picked up a lot of stuff
from him. They both had great coaching along the way so they took a little
bit from everyone they played for. The
kids are just getting out of the game
and I think it shows that it can relate
to the players with the bantam group,
said Brown. Devin (midget coach)
and his staff have been proven coaches. Theyve won championships for us.
Keith demands hard work and discipline, the one thing youll find about
him, kids that hes coached five years
ago, hang around him at another rink
so thats how much respect they have
for him.
A deep run into the playoffs and
possibly a championship would be
ideal for the teams, but the continuation of development is what Brown
wants to see the most during his tenure as president.

Calling all green thumbs

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Interested in growing your own food
this summer, but dont have a place to
do it? Four Sisters Farm has 50 garden
plots (12 ft x 12 ft) they will be renting
out to green thumbs in the area.
Tthere is a Community Garden Growers Meeting scheduled where Four Sisters Farm will share more about their
gardening initiative on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
There will be certain rules around the
garden; you have to pick it, you have to
grow it, dont use pesticides, and you
have to maintain it or Four Sisters will
take it over and will give it away.
Were going to try and be as ecofriendly as possible, said Paula
Beekamn, owner of Four Sisters Farm.
The idea is to get people out growing their own food because it really
teaches a skill and I think it maybe
draws passion from certain people. Its

about bringing people together in an

agricultural setting, and growing something and feeling good about the end
result.
The plan is to also use the garden
and the farm as a way to help the community. There will be an educational
aspect, with schools being invited out
to see how things grow, and Beekman
will be growing a plot for the Wheatland Food Bank and the Community
Crisis Society.
To get involved with the garden there
is a $25 membership fee, a $20 refundable deposit, and the parcel is rented
out for $80 per year.
There is a $20 deposit that you get
back at the end of the year because
you have to clean your plot, you have
to pull out your vegetables make sure
whatever you put in, you take all that
away, then you come and pick up your
$20, said Beekman.
Im going to put a shed out there

with hoes and everything you need. You

dont have to bring any tools, thats part
of the $25 fee is to just develop it into
something that you just come in, you
grab a hoe or whatever and then you
just work on your garden.
It brings people together creating a sense of community, said Monica
Soltys, who will be growing flowers for
sale at the farm.
Parents, their whole family and kids
can be weeding and picking and its an
outing, I think its awesome.
Anyone that grows too much of something and cant find a use for it will have
the option of selling it at market price
to the farm.
Coming to Four Sisters Farm is Market 817, a flea market-style public market where local vendors will be able to
sell their wares. The hope is to have the
market open in time for the May long
weekend. Watch here and the Four Sisters Farm Facebook page for more details.
The Community Garden Growers
meeting will be held at the Strathaven
Hall starting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 25.

successful 2014
WAYNE SHAPKA
Treasurer, Carseland Lions Club

The Carseland Lions Club brings
warm wishes to our community for
2015. Our motto is We Serve.
We have been providing aid and service to others when the need arises
since 1955.
Here is a snapshot of what we have
accomplished in 2014:
We partnered with other local service clubs to form a centennial committee, in order to celebrate Carselands
100 years.
We opened a centennial account,
applied for and received Wheatland
County Community Enhancement grant
funding for centennial celebrations and
portable bleachers. We would like to
acknowledge Wheatland County and
members of the community enhancement regional board for their commitment to making our community a wonderful place to live.
We assisted the Carseland and District Community Association and Agricultural Association with improvements
to plumbing in the community hall
kitchen, door prizes, as well as providing funds for them to lease a meeting
room.
We have given back to worthy
causes such as the Lions Quest (youth
leadership), Lions guide dog foundation and their eye bank projects.
We have assisted our youth, by
helping Busy Bee Preschool.
We assist local youth who attend
Crowther Memorial Junior High School
when they travel to eastern Canada.
Other benefactors in Carseland are

the youth group, and 1st Carseland

Baden Powell scout group as well as
project Hope.
One of the main goals of the Carseland Lions Club is to enhance infrastructure projects that the community
can physically utilize. However, we do
assist some individual requests on a
case-by-case basis.
For example, this summer, at the Aggie Days Barbeque, money received
was redistributed to local families, to
provide relief to those who were affected by personal tragedy or health issues.
We concluded the year with donations to The Sheldon Kennedy foundation, CNIB White Cane program, Canadian Cancer Society and the Strathmore
and District Christmas Hamper Society.
Overall, your generosity has helped
us assist the community, utilizing over
$19,000 in donations in 2014.
We, the Carseland Lions Club, would
like to take this time to express our
gratitude and appreciation to everyone in the community who helped to
make all of the above possible and we
look forward to continuing to serve our
community in 2015.

The Wheatland Kings gave their fans some excitement on Friday night at home as they skated hard
and stayed disciplined en route to a 5-3 win over the
Banff Bears.
I just thought we were skating, we were moving the
puck quickly, supporting the puck and staying positive on the bench, said head coach Jeremy Blumes.
Goal scorers were Brett Dumaine with two while
Graham Watkins, Kirby Ruzesky and Read Douglas
scored chipped in with one apiece.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the
next night against Coaldale as the Kings fell to the

Blumes liked how his players came out in the first

period as the play was even, they just could not sustain the pace the rest of the way.
I think tonight we didnt move the puck as well. In
the first period, were right there, its anybodys game
for the taking, said Blumes In the second period we
werent as strong on our sticks and didnt win 50/50
battles, and its a possession game and when you dont
have the puck, youre chasing and at a disadvantage.
The Copperheads scored some goals at crucial times
in the game and the Kings were not able to come
back.
They scored those two goals 30 seconds apart and
I think that second one, its a short side goal, that our
goalie would like to have back. Then the third goal,

Theyre first place for a reason and theyre opportunistic. If you give them time and space in the middle
of the ice, its going to end up in the back of our net.
It appeared that there were momentum swings
throughout the game and frustration mounted as the
Kings started to take penalties in the later stages.
At the start of the second I thought they were hungrier team and the momentum switched to their side.
In the third period, we played well, but got into penalty trouble where we took some selfish penalties and
guys were being sat, said Blumes.
Ruzesky scored the one goal in the loss.

a good thing for us to be able to that.
I thought the other team played well
too, their goaltender was good, we had
some good chances and we couldve
put them away.
The Tigers were able to take advantage of the less-than-healthy Bisons
and were sharp throughout the game.
Medicine Hat moved the puck really
well and they kept us on our heels a lot
of the night. There were times we had
difficulty getting out of our own end,
said MacDonald.
Trgve Many Guns, Kyle Gordon and
Shane Fraser supplied the offense.
The Bisons will regroup at practice
this week and going down the stretch

Former Bison Van Tetering Alaska-Fairbanks bound

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Former UFA Bison centre Troy Van
Tetering has committed to the University
of Alaska Fairbanks for the 2015-2016
season.
Van Tetering, who only played one
season with the Bisons, is currently playing with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the
AJHL and is thrilled to be playing in the
NCAA next year.
It felt great, its something Ive been
working for since I was little. It was one
of the goals I had, and one of the big
reasons I was playing hockey, and to finally achieve that goal felt great, said
Van Tetering. Its almost indescribable

because I took a bit of a

long road, but it was nice
to be finally rewarded for
all the work.
The Carstairs native
credits a lot of his success
to this point to learning
the basics of the game effectively from the Bisons
coaching staff.
This year I would not
have been able to make
the jump to Junior A without Dan (MacDonald) and Doug (Raycroft) and lots of the guys I had behind
me that year and playing with them and
developing as a player because theyre a
great coaching staff and they really de-

veloped me as a player,
said Van Tetering.
He admits that kind of
teaching helped with the
transition to Lloydminster.
The beginning of the
year has been awesome, I
was pretty nervous making the jump but again
great coaches and theyve
been giving me chances
and believing in me. Ive
been getting lots of power
play time and thats helped with the development part and getting into different
situations, said Van Tetering.
Alaska-Fairbanks has set out what they
expect of him, so he can make an imme-

diate impact upon arrival.

This is my first year and I am a rookie,
so they still expect me to put up a few
numbers and keep playing strong but
next year theyre going to expect a lot especially since Ive committed. Theyre not
going to want me to sit back and relax
now that Ive signed, said Van Tetering.
Once he recovers from a separated
shoulder, he wants to get back in the
lineup and continue developing, to show
to his coaches that he can play and that
Alaska-Fairbanks made the right decision.
When Van Tetering arrives at Alaska
Fairbanks, he is considering taking Petroleum Engineering or Program Environmental Sciences.

Hammond shines in inaugural All- Star game

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Alberta Major Bantam
Female Hockey League held its
first-ever All Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 4 in Sherwood Park.
The game was a fast-paced,
hard-fought match up featuring the best players from the
North and South divisions of the
league.
The Rocky Mountain Raiders
bantam triple-A team was well
represented at the game by six
players - including Strathmores
Karissa Hammond - along with
her teammates, Emma Borbandy
and Erin Fargey from Langdon,
Breanne Trotter and Lacey Dimaulo from Okotoks and Ken-

nedy Moore from Chestermere.

Raiders head coach Jordan
Fenton, who was also the South
All Star teams coach, liked what
he saw from Hammond and
credits her skill level to her development in minor hockey.
I think all the players from
the Raiders represented themselves well. I think with the Raiders program, being a composite
team from the communities surrounding Calgary, its a testament
to the skill development that is
done at the local minor hockey
level, said Fenton. Karissa Hammond, coming through Strathmore Minor Hockey, she played
extremely well and an aggressive
player that battled hard and a
player that never gives up on the

defensive side of the puck.

He felt that she came into
her own against the top players and put in a consistent effort
throughout the game.
I think she played consistent
the same way she plays for the
Raiders in being one of the top
defensemen in the league, said
Fenton.
Hammond will never forget
this game, as it has been a very
memorable moment so far in her
career.
It was my first time being in
something like that, it exciting to
be with all the good players in
the league and playing a highly
(skilled) game with all them,
said Hammond.
She felt nervous at first, but

settled once the game wore

on.
At first I was kind of nervous, our team stayed together and no one quit, said
Hammond.
The Raiders team has had to
work hard in all their games
to earn wins and Hammond
has contributed immensely
with her play.

We have to work hard, last

year we had more skill but
this year we have to work
hard every game. Every time
Im on the ice Im improving
and learning something different, said Hammond.
The teams road trips have
been a highlight for her so far
this year because she likes to
bond with her teammates.

weve got good pace. Were starting to gel and
hopefully be better for playoffs, said McCallum.
She has only played hockey for four years - she
had previously played ringette - but has had some
highlights in her young career.
Last year I finally made finally made bantam
triple A and won the provincials which was awesome and hopefully we can do good in playoffs
this year, said McCallum.
She got to experience a high-pressured situation at the Macs tournament this year and cherished every minute of it.
It was overwhelming at first but I adjusted to
it. I think I played pretty good and showcased
myself well, said McCallum.
The Raiders had the mindset of being on top of
their pool in the tournament and as a result overanalyzed their opponents.
We thought that we would be able to come out
on top but that didnt happen. Its a short tournament, you got to take it one game at a time and
we got a bit a head of ourselves, said McCallum.
She added that the difference from bantam to
midget in one season was playing with bigger
girls and being more aware of who is on the ice.

Hailey McCallum has really found a niche as a
rookie with the Rocky Mountain Raiders midget
triple-A female team and hopes to continue to develop and produce offensively.
I feel that weve been getting better gradually but weve had a couple upsets. We havent
finished games off as planned, a lot of ties and
shootouts, said McCallum. The Strathmore native
has 18 points (7 goals, 11 assists) in 24 games
with the Raiders and is trying to make the most
of her opportunities.
We dont have one main goal scorer and I think
Im playing better as a rookie. Im one point from
(the) top scorer right now and just learning at a
(higher) level with new people, said McCallum.
We have a lot of rookies this year and only
have six veterans.
She believes that the Raiders should use their
speed more as the team will be more effective
that way in games.
We have a lot of speed, our coach always talks
about on how we need to use our speed because

Warriors make a statement; cannot solve Sylvan Lake

The Wheatland Braves beat Red Deer TPS 13-4 on Jan. 11

at the Strathmore Family Centre.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Cody Browns Wheatland Warriors
bantam club could not have got their
game against the Southwest Rockies on
Friday night at the Strathmore Family
Centre over with fast enough.
The team crushed the lowly Rockies
21-3, but coach Brown admits that there
was not much to take out of this game
and for his team to focus on preparing
for Sylvan Lake on Saturday night in
Hussar.
Tonight it was one of those games,
its the way it goes, just kind of wanted
to get through it and move on to the
next game. Theres not a whole lot to
take out of a win with that big of a margin, said Brown.
Jayden Hendricks and Tanner Boutin
had four goals each, while Ryan Conroy

and Hassan Akl sniped hat tricks. Majid Kaddoura and Tyler Skehar notched
two each and to round out the offence,
James Farmer, Tarun Fizer and Jordan
Hansen added singles.
The Warriors, who had played Sylvan
Lake a week prior, had that game fresh
in their minds and knew they had to
bring their best game to win.
If we want to go deep playoffs, we
cant be having games like that where
you got that lead, youve got to be able
to gut that one out and finish it off,
said Brown.
We just want to clear our heads out
and go into tomorrow, probably going
to be one of the biggest game of our
season to date, putting this one behind
and show up playing out game.
On Saturday in Hussar, the local bantam double A, team after a scoreless
first period, found themselves down af-

ter two 3-0 to the top-ranked Lakers.

Sylvan Lake started the offence with
a power play goal at 5:43 of the second
from Riley Woytas.
Then late in the frame, Griffen Ryden
and Austin Kalev scored back-to-back.
The Warriors conducted a late comeback in the third as Boutin and Fizer
notched power play markers but thats
as close as they came.
Next up for the Warriors is when they
face off against the Badlands Longhorns (7:30 p.m.) in Hussar on Jan. 16.
BRAVES WANT FULL TEAM EFFORT
It is at a point in the season where
the whole team should be on board
with playoffs approaching.
The Wheatland Braves have a lot of
work to do to have all the players being the supporting cast for one another
and not just let one player do the work.
Well the biggest thing is were not
consistent. We didnt play the toughest team in the league and theres still
lots of work in front of us because as
Keith said we have to urge kids after
periods, said assistant coach Slavo
Halkovic. Were getting scored on after
fundamental mistakes like defensemen
not closing the gap and not doing the
right thing, but its fixable.
Halkovic saw in the 8-1 win in Airdrie a lot more of a complete effort, compared to the 13-4 win over Red Deer on
Sunday night.
Kyle Crnkovic, Mo Hakim, Tristan
Zandee, Zach Nicolls, Kyle Bray,
Brayden Kapty, Nolan Bailey and Adam

Kirkpatrick scored in Airdrie.

For example, yesterday we saw a real
team effort and today (Kyle)Crnkovic
was sharing the puck and if you are
fast enough to skate with him, good for
you, but many of his line mates cant
keep up with him, said Halkovic.
So he just goes and gets it done on
his own and our goal is that we want
everybody to contribute.
Crnkovic led the way with four goals,
Bray supplied three, while Max Kathol
had two and Hakim, Kirkpatrick, Bailey
and Ethan McKibbin scored one each.
The Braves next games are Jan. 24
in Hussar against the Foothills Bisons
(6 p.m.) and Jan. 25 at the Strathmore
Family Centre versus the Bow Valley
Timberwolves (4:15 p.m.).
CHIEFS EDGE LAKERS
The Wheatland Chiefs continued
their winning streak, as they were able
to squeeze by the Sylvan Lake Laker
3-2 on Saturday night in Hussar.
Despite giving the first goal, the local double-A midget team was able to
reply with a Jayden Smith power play
marker.
Kody Hammond was able to attain the
lead for the Chiefs in the third when he
went down and scored short-handed.
Smith capped off the win with his
second of the game a few minutes later.
The Lakers were able to get a late
power play tally, but it was not enough.
The Chiefs will be in Calgary next
weekend on Jan. 16 to play the Edge
School Mountaineers (5:45 p.m.).

Team Alberta thrilled

for Winter Games
JUSTIN SEWARD

Strathmore lead Braden Burton and
his teammates second Kurtis Goller
from Olds, third Caleb Boorse, coach
Todd Boorse from Red Deer and skip
Owen Goerzen from Calgary will make
up the boys Team Alberta curling for
the upcoming 2015 Canada Winter
Games in Prince George, B.C. from Feb.
13 to Mar. 1.
So theyre a group of four 17-yearold boys. They play in juvenile curling which is 18 and under, not quite
juniors, which is under 21, said Nicole
Burton, team manager.
In the spring of last year, the Alberta
Curling Federation had a bonspiel format where everybody in Alberta was
eligible to come and play as long as
you were within in the age limit and
try to qualify for a spot to represent
Alberta.
Team Goerzen was able to qualify in
the bonspiel to become Team Alberta
at the Winter Games and did some enhanced training to be prepared for the
games.
Braden, thats my son, qualified with
the team that will move forward. Then
they worked with the curling federation

over the summer and did some training and worked with some high performance coaches, nutritionist and sports
psychologists, said Burton.
All four teams had the opportunity,
and then in November they had a playoff to see which would win and represent Alberta and it was this team that
won.
Burton admits her son, like the rest
of his teammates, is ecstatic to have this
opportunity.
Theyre super excited (and) more
than honoured to be representing the
province of Alberta. If you follow curling at all, its really hard to be a representative of Alberta in curling because
we have such a huge following, said
Burton.
A Grade 12 student at Strathmore
High School, Braden calls the Strathmore Curling Club his home rink and
is excited to wear his provincial colours
proudly.
I am honoured to be wearing the yellow and blue for Alberta. Representing
Alberta at the Canada Winter Games is
an honour and a thrill, a once in a lifetime kind of experience, said Braden.
The team will receive their team apparel at Winter Games conference in
Sherwood Park on Jan. 17.

Strathmores
junior
girls curling Team Jones
placed fourth at junior
provincials with a 4-3
record this past week in
Grande Prairie.
Third Krista Shortridge felt that the team
played to their potential
and can build on that for
next season.
I definitely had a lot
of fun, the girls worked
hard and everything
that weve done so far
this year paid off, said
Shortridge.
The fourth place finish
was not good enough to
advance to the junior nationals later this month

but there were a lot of

positives to take out of
the experience.
To get to nationals
you have to be first, so
the top womens team in
the province goes to nationals. We placed fourth
out of eight teams that
were there, said Shortridge.
She added that playing in a highly competitive environment was a
good measuring stick
for the team.
Its definitely a competitive
atmosphere,
but I think together as
a team we all handled
it very well. It was the
first time for our lead
Hannah (Airey) to be in
an atmosphere like that,

shes only 13, we were a

little worried about how
she would handle it,
said Shortridge.
When youre competing at a level like that,
you start to see a side
of people youve never
seen before because its
just the pressure that
takes a toll on some
peoples personalities.
I think she handled it
very well and together
as a team we did just
fine.
The provincial tournament marked the end to
Team Jones season but
they plan to participate
in some bonspiels in
Calgary to stay active
and work towards their
goals for next season.

Bisons Conley helps hockey friend

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
UFA Bison forward William Conley
gave the greatest gift of all over the holiday season.
He was able to raise $1,100 towards
cancer research and shaved his head on
Christmas Day to help out his spring
hockey buddy and current Calgary
Northstar Shadee Merhi, who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on his
shin.
I knew that the Northstars shaved
their heads and I didnt know who it
was for and it was pretty awesome that
they did it. I read an article and realized it was a friend that I played spring
hockey with, said Conley. I decided it
wouldnt be a bad idea to bring it up to
the guys on the team and asked if they
wanted to give some money and show
their support for Pediatric cancer.
Conley was surprised at first that
the Northstars did this for Merhi, but
encouraged at the same time, to raise
money for a cancer research.
When I realized it was for him, I
was shocked at first but it affected him.
I thought about it a little more and
thought it was awesome they had did
it as a team and did it for him, said
Conley.
He was amazed at the funds that were
pouring in from the hockey community
and from family and friends.
I brought it up to my team, my parents asked their friends and family, the
teachers in my school. It wasnt limited
to just the team, it was pretty much all
around, said Conley.
There was a goal in mind that he was
going to raise, but he exceeded it as the
fundraising efforts continued.
I started and maybe I will raise $300
just to show my support but it wouldnt
be too big and around the third day I

cracked $600, then I cracked $1,000 at

the German game, said Conley. That
definitely was a shocker and I was so
happy, and so thankful for everyone
that helped out.
Conley and Merhi will make a cheque
presentation at the Tom Baker Cancer
Centre in the next few weeks and hang
out with patients.
Over exam break Im going with
Shadee to the Cancer centre and were
going to donate it together, said Conley. Well go out there and I think its
two hour thing that were going to do
and well probably go to the Childrens
Hospital and talk to all the kids because
they look up to anyone thats a little bit
older then them. Ill be happy to go
through it with him and I was honoured
that he asked me to go with him.
Merhi could not have been more
proud to hear what his buddy did for
him and cancer research.
At first when I heard about, I didnt
know what to say. It was pretty big
thing and amazing for him to do that,
said Merhi.
He has had to endure numerous surgeries but was still able to raise funds
through the Northstars and many other
supporters.
Id say around $3,000 just from the
Northstars. Theres still money coming in from people I dont even know,
my moms relatives and everyone but I
dont know an exact number, said Merhi.
He admits going through something
like this wasnt easy and the he couldnt
have done it without the tremendous
support.
Im really happy that I can give back
to all the people that did stuff for me
such as the doctors and I feel really
great about being able to support other
people that are going through the same
thing, said Merhi.
