A Step To Help The University Students To Overcome The Academic Stress
(Workshop on Stress Management for University Student)
Background
Stress is an important issue faced by students during their years of study (Al-Dubai, Alshagga, &
Manaf, 2013), where different factors are involved including academic overload, group projects,
competitiveness, lack of technological resources, lack of supervision, or insufficient organization
of time which produces what is called chronic stress (Pozos-Radillo, de Lourdes PreciadoSerrano, Acosta-Fernndez, de los ngeles Aguilera-Velasco, & Delgado-Garca, 2014).
Poor academic performance often generates negative feedback about the students performance;
consequently leading to stress, anxiety, and depression (Nakalema & Ssenyonga, 2014). In
addition to that, students own academic expectations and performance were found to be
associated with higher levels of academic stress (Nakalema & Ssenyonga, 2014). This is
evidenced by the fact that students from low social economic status were found to be more
stressed by having to meet parental expectations. A person or a student without stress becomes
listless (lazy) and forget his responsibilities as a student so if a student response to stress then it
depend upon the event whether a stress is appraised as a challenge or threat. If a student feels too
much stress it can lead to depression, phobia and even suicidal intention. One of the most
important stress is public speaking confidence.
Stress reduction has been shown in many researches to be beneficial to general wellbeing, as it
improves physical and psychological health and lifestyle awareness what is called Stress
management (Danna & Griffin, 1999).
