Hilltop Wins By Eighteen At Edon Stryker Overpowers North Central

(January 15th, 2015) EDON: Making
the trip to Edon, the Hilltop Cadets were
poised for an invasion.
And invade they did. The Cadets
stormed Edon's court early, and never allowed them to get back into the game. Hilltop bested the Bombers 59-31.
The boys from West Unity doubled up
Edon in the first quarter, earning a 14-7
advantage in the early goings of the contest. That lead was greatly expanded in the
second period, where Hilltop outscored the
Bombers 18-4. Going into halftime, the
Cadet forces were enjoying a 32-11 lead.
Edon played much better in the second
half, but the damage had already been
done. The third quarter saw the Bomber
boys keeping closer to their guests from
West Unity. Still, they fell behind by an-
other five points. In the fourth and final

quarter, Edon kept pace with Hilltop. The
Bombers were only outscored by 2 points
down the stretch.
Senior Erik Stipe had a solid evening,
providing the Cadets with 15 points, 4
rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Quinn
Smith, a sophomore for Hilltop, added 12
points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Teammate and senior leader Jalen Towers put
up 11 points and 7 rebounds of his own,
while Tim Maneval scored 6 points and
made an assist.
It was Landon Bloir who led the Bombers in scoring. The Edon junior posted 11
points. Alex Kirkingberg contributed another 6 points to the Bomber effort. Floyd
Young and Brayden Bauer each scored 5
points.
(January 15th, 2015) PIONEER: The

Panthers of Stryker made a stop in Pioneer,
taking on the Eagles of North Central on
Thursday. The visitors from Stryker were not
kind to their hosts, however.
The Panthers took down North Central
74-30.
From start to finish, Stryker controlled
the game. Outscoring North Central 26-10
in the first quarter, the Panthers maintained
a 10 point lead even after losing the second
quarter 14-8. At the half, Stryker still laid
claim to a 34-24 advantage.
Then, in the third period, the Panthers
exploded for 22 points. With the Eagles only
managing 12 points in the quarter, Stryker
all of a sudden held a 20 point lead, 56-36.

The fourth quarter saw the Panther boys
close out the game, ending the contest on
an 18-4 run.
Parker Ruffer had an excellent day for
the Panthers. The senior produced 27 points
for the Stryker effort. Teammate and fellow
senior Tanner Clingaman added 15 points.
Brady Shock put up another 13 points for
the Panthers, while Austin Gresier scored 8
points as well.
In a valiant effort, North Central senior
Jordan Bailey created 15 points for his
team. Another senior, Brady Zuver, made 14
points in the contest. Jordan Reeves, a third
senior, put up 7 points in the loss also.

Pettisville Earns Big Win Short Against Bryan

In Overtime At Fayette
(January 15th, 2015) FAYETTE: A 16

point burst in overtime helped the Blackbirds of Pettisville to soar over Fayette.
Pettisville had to come back in order to
even force the contest into overtime, however. In a 7 point deficit at halftime, the
Blackbird boys battled back, necessitating the extra time. Outscoring the Eagles
16-2 in overtime, Pettisville secured a 5339 win over an Eagle team many considered to be the favorite to win the Buckeye
Border Conference.
The first quarter had both teams displaying a level of intensity one would
expect from a game of this magnitude.
Fayette finished the period with a slight
advantage, though, pulling ahead 10-9.
They built on that lead in the second period, winning the quarter 17-11. At the
half, they enjoyed a 27-20 advantage.
Pettisville came roaring back in the
third quarter. They took control of the
game on both ends of the floor. This led to
a 13-7 run that put the Blackbirds within
a point of Fayette. Heading into the fourth
quarter, Fayette nursed a 34-33 lead.
The final stanza was defense-intensive,
to say the least. Pettisville made up the

1 point gap separating the two teams by
outscoring the Eagles 4-3. In the resultant overtime, the Blackbird boys stepped
up offensively. Pettisville trumped the
hometown boys of Fayette 16-2 in the extra time, making the game look as though
it wasn't as close as it actually was.
A trio of scorers helped to lift Pettisville over the Eagles. Josh Liechty led the
charge, putting up 16 points. Tate Kauffman went 3 for 5 from the three-point line
on his way to 12 points to the victory effort. Another Blackbird, Eli King, also totaled 12 points, though he did all of his
work from inside the arc.
Koby Biddix was the high scorer for the
Eagles, earning 14 points against a tough
Pettisville defense. Skylar Lantz contributed 9 points in the loss. Teammate Jared
Seiler put up 7 points as well.
The result of this game has the potential to change the entire complexion of the
Buckeye Border Conference. Suddenly
three, and maybe even four teams, look
to be legitimate contenders for a league
title this year.
(January 16th, 2015) MONTPELIER: With rival Bryan coming to town,

the boys of Montpelier were excited and
ready to play well before the opening tip.
Still, this game was a hard one for the
Locomotives. At one point, in the middle
of the third quarter, they were within 3
points of the Golden Bears, seeming to
have momentum on their side. Bryan
was able to turn things around, however, and Montpelier suffered a bitter 5440 loss to their rival.
The contest was intense from the beginning. The two teams battled back and
forth, with Bryan gaining a slight upper
hand early. By the end of the first period, the Locos were down by the narrowest of margins, 13-11. The second
quarter saw Montpelier score another 11
points. But the Bears were able to put
up 16, expanding their advantage to 7
points. With a halftime score of 29-22,
the Locomotives had some work to do if

they wanted to challenge Bryan in the
second half.
The third period began with the
Loco boys making a run at Bryan. Pulling within 3 points of the Golden Bears
midway through the period, it looked as
though Montpelier might earn their first
North Western Ohio Athletic League victory. However, Bryan responded, coming back to take the third quarter 11-10.
That surge continued in the fourth period, as the Locomotives fell further behind, thanks to a 14-8 run by the Bears.
Alex Matzinger stepped up for Montpelier in this game. Constantly attacking the basket and earning trips to the
free throw line, the Loco senior scored
13 points against Bryan. Nate McCord
contributed 9 points in the loss. Michael
Blake and Jacob Leung each added 5
points to the Montpelier total as well.

Stryker Wins Big Over Montpelier,

Has Successful Homecoming
(January 17th, 2015) STRYKER: The
packed crowd in the Stryker gym had more
than just Homecoming to celebrate as the
Panthers hosted Montpelier on Saturday
night.
With a performance that can only be
described as efficient, the Stryker boys derailed the visiting Locomotives throughout
the course of the Panthers' Homecoming
game. By game's end, Stryker triumphed
over their North Western Ohio Athletic
League opponent in convincing fashion,
61-37.
Opening the contest strong, the Panther
boys found themselves evenly matched
with the Locos. Late into the first quarter,
however, Stryker had pulled ahead 13-8.
Also outscoring Montpelier in the second
period, albeit by a mere 3 points, Stryker
laid claim to a 25-17 lead at the half.
Montpelier had its strongest defensive
effort in the third quarter, holding their
Buckeye Border Conference (BBC) foes
to just 10 points. The Locos were able to
match that total, also putting up 10 points
in the period. Still within 8 points of Stryker, Montpelier looked to close the gap in
the fourth quarter.
That's not what happened, however.
Instead, the Panthers closed out the
game fiercely. Exploding for 26 points in
the game's final period, the hometown
boys of Stryker showed no mercy in their
assault on the Locos. Montpelier couldn't
keep pace with the Panthers' scoring, only
managing 10 points down the stretch. That
extra 16 points added to Stryker's cushion
gave them the 24 point victory.
A major factor in the Stryker win was
turnovers. The Panthers turned the ball
over just 9 times in the entire contest.
Montpelier, meanwhile, committed 15
turnovers. Those six extra chances at the
basket could have produced between 12

and 15 points for Stryker that Montpelier wouldn't even have an opportunity to
match.
The free throw line played a significant
role for Stryker as well. Montpelier was 6
for 13 from the line. Not only is that less
than a fifty percent success rate, but 13
extra point attempts isn't exactly a large
number. The Locos could have been more
aggressive with the basketball.
Like Stryker was, for example. Their aggression earned them 28 shots from the
charity stripe, 19 of which they made. They
made 6 more shots than Montpelier even
attempted. Even if the Locos had made one
hundred percent of their free throws, they
still would have scored 6 less points from
the line than the Panthers.
And, to put it simply, Stryker just made
more shots than Montpelier. The Locomotives combined to make 15 field goals
against a stingy Panther defense. Stryker
knocked down 20 field goals in the game,
two of which were from beyond the arc.
Montpelier had just 1 three in the contest.
More than anything, though, it was
Parker Ruffer who made the difference in
this game. The senior gave a herculean effort on his team's behalf, scoring 30 points.
Fellow senior Tanner Clingaman added
11 points to the victory effort. Teammate
Brannan Woolace contributed 7 points as
well.
Montpelier was led by senior Alex Matzinger, who attacked the rim hard to earn
11 points. Kyrin Schuman, another Loco,
had 7 points. Sophomore standout Michael
Blake put up 6 points in the loss also.
Stryker's win over Montpelier puts them
at 5-5 for the season. Their BBC record
is still 3-1, as this was a non-conference
game.

Fayette JV Defends Home

Court Against Pettisville
(January 15th, 2015 FAYETTE: In
Buckeye Border Conference (BBC) Junior Varsity action, Fayette hosted Pettisville. The Eagles stood ready to defend
their home court against the Blackbirds,
and it showed in the game's final result.
Winning the contest by 12 points, the
Fayette boys established themselves as
a legitimate power in the BBC. These
two outstanding programs are always at

or near the top of the conference, and
that begins with great junior high and
junior varsity programs. Such a convincing win over Pettisville's Junior Varsity team can only mean good things for
the Eagles in the future.
The final score of the game was 3725.

North Central JV Comes

Back To Beat Stryker
(January 15th, 2015) PIONEER: For
three quarters, North Central's Junior
Varsity unit trailed Stryker. Sometimes by
a lot, sometimes by a little, but the Eagles
were always behind.
Then came the fourth quarter.
It was in that final period that the boys
from Pioneer completed their rally against
the Panthers. Taking the lead, North Central never relinquished it. The Eagles defeated Stryker 45-40.
The visiting Panthers came on strong
right out of the gate. The first quarter
belonged to them 15-7. Stryker added to
their lead in the second period, taking on
3 more points by outscoring North Central
12-9. That gave the Panther boys a 27-16
edge heading into the locker room.
But the Eagles clawed their way back
into the game. They had a huge third period, outperforming the Stryker boys 14-5.
Now just down 2 points at 32-30, North
Central used that momentum in the fourth
and final period. Claiming the quarter by
a 15-8 margin, the youthful Pioneer boys
earned a dramatic 45-40 victory.
Freshman Cody Tomblin gave North
Central a spark, putting up 11 points
against Stryker. Fellow Eagle Nathan
Traxler scored 7 points, while Josh Roesener and Keean Livensparger each managed 6 points. Josh Bailey added 5 points
as well.
Stryker's Hunter Lilleholm, a second
year player, led all scorers with 17 points.
Fellow sophomore Hayden Clingaman contributed 8 points in the losing effort. Kaid
Woolace put up 6 points also.

Late Against Montpelier Locos
(January 17th, 2015) STRYKER:
Panther Hunter Lilleholm put up 11
points in the Stryker Junior Varsity
squad's thrilling victory over the visiting
Locomotives of Montpelier.
Serving as an exciting opening act to
Stryker's Homecoming game, the contest
between North Western Ohio Athletic
League team Montpelier and the hosting
Buckeye Border Conference representative Stryker was a back and forth affair. A
strong third quarter by the Loco boys necessitated an equally strong response by
Stryker to put the contest out of reach.
When the final buzzer sounded, it was
the home team that had earned the win,
as Stryker took the game 32-24.
It was the Panthers who claimed an
early advantage. The first period saw
them outscore their guests from Montpelier 8-2. Stryker added to their lead in the
second quarter as well. Going into halftime, the Locos found themselves on the
wrong end of a 17-8 score.
The Locomotives steamrolled their
way through the third quarter, however.
The visitors claimed the third quarter
by a 10-5 margin. This put them behind
by a mere 4 points with only the fourth
quarter remaining. The Panthers answered Montpelier's run in that final period, though. The Stryker boys ended the
game on a 10-6 run of their own, giving
them the 8 point victory.
Aside from Lilleholm's efforts, Kaid
Woolace also had a solid evening scoring
the ball. The sophomore contributed 6
points to the tough win.
For Montpelier, Colin Rockey led the
way with 8 points. Teammate Gunnar
Matson added 4 points in the losing effort.

Hilltop JV Win Big At Edon

(January 15th, 2015) EDON: The Junior Varsity Cadet Basketball team made
the trek down to Edon, ready for some junior varsity Buckeye Border Conference
action.
The Cadets were able to secure the road
victory, taking the contest 41-28.
In the first quarter, the Bombers fell behind by 4 points, as the Cadets took the
period 12-8. Edon struggled to score in the
second quarter. Hilltop took advantage,
adding another 5 points onto their lead.
At the half, the boys of Edon found themselves in a 19-10 deficit.
Coming out of the locker room, the
Bombers were determined to keep pace
with their guests from West Unity. Although they were able to do so, that wasn't
enough for them to make up any ground
on Hilltop. The third quarter saw Edon fall
behind just 1 more point, as they were outscored 9-8. For the contest's final period,
the Cadets managed to tack on 3 more
points to their advantage, with both teams
having their best quarter offensively. Hilltop claimed the quarter by a 13-10 margin,
giving them a 13 point win.
Steven Riley, of Hilltop, led all scorers
with 19 points. For the Bombers, it was
Blake Thiel who did most of the scoring, as
he produced half of his unit's points with
14.

Pettisville Takes Down Hicksville

(January 13th, 2015) PETTISVILLE:
The Lady Blackbirds almost let it slip
away.
Hosting Green Meadows Conference
power Hicksville, the Pettisville girls got off
to a fantastic start. They built a lead that
should have had staying power. Yet simple
mistakes let the Lady Aces back into the
game.
We started fast, but then didnt play
smart, said Pettisville Coach Jason Waldvogel.
Indeed, the Blackbird girls quite hastily took the lead, ending the first quarter
up 15-5. They would be unable to repeat
that defensive performance in any of the
other three periods of play. The second
quarter, for example, saw the Aces rack up
14 points to Pettisville's 13. Still, the Lady
Blackbirds carried a 28-19 lead with them
into the locker room.
However, Hicksville was able to shave
that advantage all the way down to 2

points in the third period, thanks to a
16-9 edge gained in the period. The Lady
Blackbirds would not be denied the victory, though. They outscored the Lady Aces
16-12 down the homestretch. This allowed
them to claim a 53-47 victory.
Though he proclaimed that his team
didn't play very smart, he's certainly
not taking anything away from how well
Hicksville played.
Coach Adams (Hicksville Coach) and
her team are to be given credit for how
hard they played tonight.
Pettisville relied upon their senior leadership to win this game, which turned out
to be a wise decision. Dana Fricke totaled
20 points to lead all scorers in the contest.
Fellow senior Mikala Avina knocked down
3 triples as she tallied up 17 points overall. A third senior, Jordyn Pursel, added 6
points to the victory effort as well.

Edon Falls At Home To Wayne Trace

(January 13th, 2015) EDON: The Lady
Bombers just couldn't get their offense going against the Wayne Trace defense.
Edon struggled mightily against their
guest from the Green Meadows Conference. After the final buzzer, the scoreboard
read 63-33 in Wayne Trace's favor.
The contest was a tight race in its infancy. Edon finished the first quarter down
by just a 2 point margin with an 8-6 score.
Wayne Trace exploded offensively in the
second period, however, scoring 24 points.
The Lady Bombers could only manage 8
points in that span. Out of nowhere, Edon
was blindsided with an 18 point deficit
thanks to a 32-14 score.
In the third quarter, the Bomber defense improved, but still couldn't lower
Wayne Trace's point production to match
their low offensive output. The hometown
girls were outscored 15-7 in the period, increasing the gap between the two squads
to 26 points. The fourth quarter saw Edon
put up 12 points, their highest total of any
quarter in the contest. Wayne Trace continued their scoring frenzy, though, finishing the game with a 16 point quarter.
Alex Kiess made an overwhelming majority of her team's points. The senior leader finished the game with 24 of Edon's 33
points. Kaitlyn Sonneberger scored 8 of
the remaining 9 points.
Stryker Drops Home Game To Delta

(January 13th, 2015) STRYKER: In a
battle of Panthers, Stryker hosted North
Western Ohio Athletic League (NWOAL) opponent Delta early last week.
The result of the contest was a tough
home loss for the Buckeye Border Conference's (BBC) own Panther brand. Styrker
fell to Delta 63-35.
Delta got off to a hot start, rattling off
18 points in the first quarter. Stryker only
managed to put up 9 points in that span,
putting themselves in a hole early. The
BBC Panthers stepped up defensively in
the second period, though, holding their
NWOAL counterparts to 9 points. The
Stryker girls scored 11 points during the
quarter, lowering their deficit to 7 points at
the half, 27-20.
Coming out of the locker room, Delta's

offense erupted. Accumulating 23 points
in the third period, Stryker struggled to
find an answer. All they could muster was
5 points. Suddenly caught in a 50-25 deficit, the Panthers of the BBC were absolutely blindsided by the Delta barrage of
points. In the fourth quarter, Stryker was
outscored 13-10, putting their margin of
defeat at 28.
Brittany Brier took the initiative in
scoring for Stryker, shooting her way to 8
points. Junior Audra Rupp was close behind with 7 points. Haley Doehrmann, a
freshman who has performed exceptionally well throughout the year, added 6
points to the Stryker total. Teammate Taylor Haines had 5 points.

Montpelier Earns First

NWOAL Win Against Bryan
(January 15, 2015) BRYAN: The Lady
Locos scored a monumental victory last
Thursday.
Not only did they claim their first victory in the North Western Ohio Athletic
League (NWOAL) this season, but the
Montpelier girls also took down their hated
rival, Bryan, to do so. Improving steadily
throughout the year, all of their hard work
finally paid off in a big way in the road win.
Most impressive, however, is that the game
was never really in doubt.
The Locomotives demolished the Golden Bears 50-34.
From the contest's early goings, Montpelier separated themselves from their
hosts. The Locos celebrated a 17-8 lead as
the first quarter came to a close. The second period saw Montpelier slow down a bit
offensively, though their defensive intensity remained constant. Going into halftime,
the Locomotive girls enjoyed a 22-17 advantage.
The visitors from Montpelier stormed
the court in the third quarter, recapturing
some of their scoring prowess in the period. Bryan had their best offensive quarter as well, though. Still, the Lady Locos
tacked 3 more points to their cushion, giving themselves a 35-27 lead heading into
the fourth and final quarter.

In that last stanza, the Locomotives
from Montpelier doubled their lead. This
was due to an exceptional effort on both
ends of the floor. The Loco defense limited
the hometown Bears to just 7 points, putting up 15 of their own during that same
span. This strong finish gave the Montpelier girls a victory margin of 16 points.
Hannah Blake's gutsy performance
paved the way for the Lady Locos win. The
junior standout made 9 successful field
goals on her own, including 1 from threepoint range, as she shredded the Bryan
defense for 23 points.
Senior teammate Baylee Hageman added 9 points in the victory, making 4 field
goals from inside the paint. Fellow senior
Malorie Yagelski, normally a defensive
specialist, racked up 8 points, thanks to
3 two-point field goals and a 2 for 2 effort from the free throw line. Audrey Pirtle
scored 4 points off of 2 shots, while Haley
Suffel knocked down a three for her only
3 points of the game. Maddie Richmond
earned all of her 3 points from the charity
stripe.
The victory puts Montpelier at 5-6 on
the season, with a 1-3 record in NWOAL
play.
Hilltop Marches Past Edon

In The Fourth Quarter
(January 16th, 2015) WEST UNITY:
Hilltop played host to Edon on Friday
night, and the Lady Cadets were well prepared for the Bomber threat landing in
their court.
Keeping themselves ahead of the Edon
girls throughout the game, it wasn't until
the fourth quarter that Hilltop was able
to truly sparate themselves from the Lady
Bombers. And separate they did, winning
the contest by 20 points. After the final
buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read 5737, Hilltop.
The Lady Cadets got off to a hot start,
taking the lead right away. They enjoyed
a 17-11 advantage at the close of the first
quarter. Edon responded with suffocating defense in the second period, holding
the Hilltop girls to 6 points, while adding
10 points to their own total. Down just 2
points, Edon entered the locker room on
the wrong end of a 23-21 score.
A tight third quarter provided just a
small amount of breathing room for Hilltop. Outscoring the Bomber girls 10-7 in
the stanza, the Cadets took a 33-28 lead
heading into the fourth quarter. It was in
the final period that the girls from West
Unity hit their stride. Putting up 24 points

down the stretch, the Edon girls simply
could not keep up with Hilltop's frenetic
scoring. The visiting Bombers mustered
only 9 points to end the contest.
Destiny Denton led the way for the Lady
Cadets. The lone Hilltop senior scored 15
points, also grabbing 5 rebounds, making
3 assists, and stealing the ball 3 times as
well. Cadet junior Allie Schmitt offered 11
points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists to the
Hilltop effort. Teammate Karissa Crisenbery provided 8 points and 4 rebounds in
the win. Teammates Felicity Jackson and
Bailey Funkhouser each added another 8
points to the Cadet total as well.
Kaitlyn Sonneberger had a strong
showing for the Lady Bombers, making
16 points on her team's behalf. Senior
Bomber Alex Kiess contributed 9 points
to the Edon cause. Hannah Kaylor had a
solid evening scoring the ball, as she also
put up 9 points.
It should be noted that one of Edon's
better players, Kaitlin Chrisman, is out
for the foreseeable future with a broken
hand, and did not participate in this
game.

Stryker Panthers Earn Home

Win Against North Central
(January 16th, 2015) -STRYKER: Taylor
Haines scored 21 points in the Lady Panthers' big Buckeye Border Conference win
against North Central.
Stryker took the lead early and never
looked back. They defeated the Lady Eagles
49-36.
It all began with Haines brilliant first
quarter performance. The Panther sophomore connected on 3 of her 4 successful
three-point attempts in the opening period,
earning 11 points early into the contest.
This was part of a 19 point first quarter effort by the Stryker girls. The Lady Eagles
were much slower to start, producing 6
points in the same span.
Of course, the girls from Pioneer didn't
just give up. They came back strong in the
second period, scoring 14 points. At the
same time, they were able to hold Stryker to
just 5 points. This closed the gap between
the two teams quite quickly, leaving the
score at 24-20 in Stryker's favor going into
halftime.
That margin barely moved in the third

period. Stryker added a single point to their
lead thanks to an 11-10 quarter. With just
a 5 point difference between the two squads,
the fourth quarter would prove vital to the
game's outcome.
The Lady Panthers delivered the knockout punch in the final period. Stryker put
up 14 points, limiting North Central to just
6. For such a young team to finish a game
so convincingly shows how much they've
grown over the course of the season thus
far.
Besides Haines, Haley Doehrmann had
a great night scoring the ball. The talented freshman contributed 17 points to the
Stryker victory. Audra Rupp, a Panther junior, added 4 points as well.
North Central senior Sabrina Pickford
produced 17 points for the Lady Eagles.
Makayla Hayes, an Eagle sophomore, scored
7 points, making the team's only three in
the contest. Cady VanDeVoorde offered another 6 points to the North Central effort.

(January 15th, 2015) BRYAN: Traveling to play their old enemy Bryan, the
Lady Locomotives Junior Varsity team
knew they were in for a dog fight. After
all, almost all rivalry games are tough, regardless of the records, or even the talent
levels, of the two teams. There's something more on the line in contests like
these, and everyone seems to step up and
play at their absolute peak.

Still, Montpelier couldn't pull off the
road victory. The young Lady Locos fought
valiantly, but couldn't quite get the better
of the Lady Golden Bears. The Locomotives dropped the contest 26-21.
Meili Leung stood out in the close loss.
She put up 8 points in an effort to propel
Montpelier past their hosts.

Pettisville Defeats Fayette In

Battle For BBC Supremacy
Pettisville and Fayette are about as different as two basketball teams can get.
Take their respective three-point
shooting percentages in their first meeting of the season, which took place in
Pettisville. The Lady Blackbirds shot 75%
from beyond the arc, connecting on 3 of
their 4 attempts. Fayette, on the other
hand made only 27% of their three-point
attempts, knocking down 6 of their 22
shots from long range.
Pettisville is very much a defensiveminded team, trying to slow the game
down and maximize their own possessions
along the way. The Lady Eagles pack an
explosive offense, relying on their accurate shooters to carry them to victory.
On January 16, defense won, as Pettisville defeated Fayette 52-39.
The Lady Blackbirds took the lead in
the first quarter, ending the period with a
15-10 advantage. The second quarter saw
Fayette improve defensively, but continue
to struggle putting points on the board. At
the half, the girls of Pettisville held on to
a 24-17 lead.
In the third quarter, the Lady Eagles
still were unable to make up any ground.
With Pettisville scoring 1 more point than
them in the period, the visitors from Fayette saw their deficit increase to 8 points.
Down the homestretch, the Blackbirds
closed out strong, out scoring the Eagles
18-13 to secure the 13 point victory.
Both teams took care of the ball extremely well. Fayette only had 5 turnovers
for the entire duration of the contest. Pettisville wasn't too far behind that number,
as they committed just 8 turnovers.
Rebounding was a key to the game.
The Lady Blackbirds out rebounded
their guests from Fayette by 8. Pettisville
brought in 26 boards, while the Lady Eagles managed to procure just 18.
A trio of players produced the majority of Pettisville's points. Leading the

pack was senio Mikala Avina, who nailed
2 three-point attempts on her way to
17 points. Another senior, Dana Fricke,
knocked down a triple as well, putting up
14 points on the evening. A third senior,
Jordyn Pursel, normally more attuned to
the defensive end of the floor, worked the
inside for 10 points.
Pettisville won because they were able
to limit the Fayette offense, particularly
on the perimeter. That effort began with
containing Taylor Griffiths. The Fayette
senior, accustomed to scoring well into
double figures, was held to just 9 points,
with just a single three-point field goal.
Hannah Machacek connected on 3 shots
from beyond the arc to earn 9 points as
well. Alex Fruchey, a junior for the Eagles,
made a three-point shot on her way to 9
points also.
Pettisville Head Coach Jadon Waldvogel could not have felt better about his
team's performance.
I am not sure that I can ask a team to
play together any more than they did tonight, the Blackbird Coach began. They
were solid as a unit on defense and rebounded really well. Offensively, we were
patient and found the open person.
And it wasn't just a few players who
helped pull off this incredible victory.
I am extremely proud of their effort
each and every one of them!
While they haven't been perfect, the
Lady Blackbirds have been playing excellent team basketball all year long. This is
what allowed them to take down a team
that is probably more naturally talented
than they are.
Still, it will be interesting to see what
happens when Fayette gets to host Pettisville in what will surely be a highly anticipated rematch later on this season.

(January 16th, 2015) WEST UNITY:
Playing the role of traveler can be difficult
in sports. Even if a team's fans are devout
enough to follow them for away games,
simply being in a different environment
can take its toll on its players.
The Lady Bombers Junior Varsity team
made the trip to West Unity on Friday,
looking to show that they were not encumbered by such things. And even though
they found themselves on the wrong end
of a 36-24 final score, they proved that
playing on the road was not an issue for
them.
Defense ruled the first quarter. Both
Edon and Hilltop managed just 4 points
in that span. An offensively efficient second period gave the Lady Cadets a sizable
advantage, as they outscored their guests
from Edon 14-3.

Down 18-7 at the half, it would have
been easy for the young Bomber squad
to have given up. Instead, they came out
in the third quarter and played their best
basketball of the game. Winning the period
12-8, the Edon girls chipped away at the
Hilltop lead. Yet, the Lady Cadets didn't
blink at the first sign of adversity either.
Going on a 10-5 run to end the contest,
they held on to win by 12 points.
Johnnie Roth gave the Cadets a scoring
boost. The freshman put up 8 points to
lead all scorers in the game. Layni Allport
added 7 points to the Hilltop total as well.
Shayla Mason earned top scoring honors for the Lady Bombers. Another freshman, Mason scored 6 points in a valiant
effort.

Fayette Despite Late Run
In a tight defensive battle, it was the Lady
Blackbirds who stood victorious at the final buzzer.
The junior varsity girls of Fayette played
with pride, battling back from a huge deficit early in the contest. It wasn't quite
enough, however, as the Lady Eagles fell to
Pettisville 26-19.
The Blackbirds began the game by
building a large lead. The first quarter
saw them pull ahead 10-1. Following up
that performance, Pettisville was able to
expand on that advantage in the second
quarter, adding another 4 points to their
cushion. This gave them a 19-6 lead head-
ing into halftime.

Not content to just lay down for the
Blackbird girls, Fayette regrouped at the
half, and came out swinging to start the
third quarter. The Lady Eagles turned the
period into a 10-2 run, which put them
right back into contention for the game.
Both sides struggled to get into a offensive
rhythm in the fourth quarter. Pettisville
was able to stay 2 points ahead of Fayette
down the stretch, earning them a hard
fought 7 point victory.
Jaelyn Rufenacht, a junior for Pettisville, led the Blackbirds in scoring with 9
points. Fayette's Rylee Ruger, another junior, also put up 9 points.

Often overlooked due to his teammate,

Parker Ruffer, Clingaman is a big part of
what the Panthers do. In Strykers route
of North Central, he provided his squad
with 15 points. For their Homecoming
victory over Montpelier, the senior made
11 points, and excelled defensively.
Avina played a crucial role in two major

Blackbird victories last week. Against
Hicksville, the senior made 3 three-point
shots on her way to 17 points. She
would again score 17 against BBC foe
Fayette, a game in which she connected
on a pair of triples.

Wauseon Boys Defeat Bryan &

Springfield, Girls Beat Springfield
In Swim & Dive Tri-Meet
(January 15th, 2015) WAUSEON: The

boys and girls Wauseon Swim and Dive
Teams invited both Bryan and Springfield
High Schools into the pool, as the three
schools competed in a tri-meet.
The Indian boys took the meet cleanly,
beating both Bryan and Springfield.
Wauseon took first place in the 200
medley relay, with the team of Nick Dilworth, Kyle Zirkle, Mac Warncke, and
Derek Rupp taking the race at 1:59.55.
Dilworth also claimed first place at the
200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:57.31,
while teammate Quintin Reiser earned
third place thanks to his time of 2:16.11.
Austin Schuette took first place at the 200
IM with at 2:21.03, with Warncke finishing
in second place due to his time of 2:28.44.
In the 50 freestyle, Rupp was awarded
first place by finishing at 24.98. Schuette
won the 100 freestyle race at 54.49. Dilworth again took home first place honors,
this time in the 500 freestyle with a time
of 5:11.93.
The team of Warncke Seth Hutchison,
Rupp, and Schuette earned a victory in the
200 freestyle relay at 1:41.38. In the 400
freestyle relay, Rupp Hutchison, Schuette,
and Dilworth combined to win the 440
freestyle relay with a time of 5:43.98.
For the diving portion of the compe-
tition, Cody Fry achieved victory at the

event. Teammate Tony Schweinhagen
came in third place.
The Lady Indians also laid claim to a
win at the meet, but only against Springfied, as Wauseon took second place overall.
The 200 medley relay team of Emily Bray, Harley Serres, Kate Precht, and
Amanda Stutzman earned a second place
finish thanks to a time of 2:16.55. Kasey Darnell took second place in the 200
freestyle at 2:05.39. Sydney Darnell was
awarded second place in the 50 freestyle
with a time of 25.68.
Sydney Darnell finished in first place at
the 100 fly, completing the race at 1:01.43.
Kasey Darnell earned a first place finish in
the 500 free with a time of 5:27.15. Alexys
Carteaux, Alexis Meyer, and Kasey and
Sydney Darnell joined forces to win the
200 freestyle relay at 1:45.61. That same
team also claimed victory at the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:52.78.
In the 100 backstroke, Meyer finished
in second place at 1:13 flat. Serres took
second place in the 100 breaststroke,
thanks to her time of 1:23.4.
