GATHERING SONG

O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hears

ELW # 658

PRAYER of CONFESSION
P Blessed be the Holy trinity, + One God Who forgives all our sin, whose
mercy endures forever.
C Amen.
P

Most Merciful God!

We acknowledge that you are our God and that we
have covenanted to be your people.

C:

But we confess that there are times when we fail to live out that
covenant in the dailyness of our lives. We sometimes miss
opportunities to love others. We sometimes allow fear to make us
small in our faith. We allow the shadows of doubt to obscure the
brightness of your presence. Sometimes, we follow the desires of
our own heart instead of seeking your presence.

P: Holy God, Remind us again of your presence near us and in us.

C: Forgive us for what we have done and for what we have left
undone. Free us from guilt, shame, and self-doubt. Help us to see
you in the moment-by-moment possibilities to live with integrity, to
act courageously as your people, and to speak the love of God in all
of our words and actions. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.
P

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for
his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of
the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the
entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the +
Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
3

Amen.

ELW pg #160

P: THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. JOHN 3: 1-17

C: Glory to you, O Lord!

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said
to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these
signs that you do apart from the presence of God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no
one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can
anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be
born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being
born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do
not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it
chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things
be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?
"Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not
receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you
believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who
descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may
not perish but may have eternal life.
"Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through him."

A Minute for Mission

APOSTLES CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven
and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our
Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the
third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is
seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come
to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
PRAYERS FOR THE DAY

Jesus promised in Mt 18: 10, If two of you agree on earth about

anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven
Therefore, one of the most powerful ways we can pray as
intercessors is together with others. Bring your burdens, prayers
and concerns together to the presence of God.
(Prayers of intercession may be said in heart or aloud)
All: All: Dear God, let your will for me be known.
Use me, oh God, as your creation.
When a kind word needs to be spoken, use my voice.
When a load needs to be lifted, use my back.
When a hug needs to be given, use my arms.
When a journey needs to be taken, use my feet.
6

When a message needs to be delivered, use my mind.

When a friend needs to be loved, use my heart.
In all things, in all ways,
use me God,
as your instrument of love, faith, peace and tranquility. Amen.

PEACE
P: The Peace of the Lord be with you
C: And also with you
