Week Two Overview

In this weeks session, Brendon shares four separate but complimentary frameworks for
better understanding and influencing others. He describes these models as critical to
his ability to influence millions of people as well as small teams and even those he
loves. If you are the person who understands other people better than those around
you, and you have the intention and ability to influence their beliefs and behaviors,
then you are the one likely to make the greatest difference.

Four new models are introduced in this weeks lesson.

1. Social Intelligence Model


This model reveals that there are 10 human drives that are influencing how people
think, feel, and behave at all times. Understanding and mastering these drives is critical
to knowing and relating with others. The human drives include Primary Drives like
Control, Competence, Congruence, Connection, and Caring. And the Forward Drives
include Change, Challenge, Creative Expression, Contribution, and Consciousness.

2. The Persuasion Formula


Here, Brendon shares his 3-part formula for thinking through any situation in which
persuasion will be critical: mediations, negotiations, requests of your family, and more.
He states that the foundation of all persuasion rests on our ability to Acknowledge
others, to explicitly share our understanding of and appreciation for their realities. We
must acknowledge other peoples challenges and struggles, and their successes and
struggles in the past, before attempting to make a request of them. Next, we must also
stoke their Ambition for a better future. As we do that, we can gain greater persuasion
by sharing explicitly how their actions can bring them great intrinsic reward (personal
meaning, passion, and enjoyment) and extrinsic reward (social recognition or reward
like status, money, power, awards, social popularity or appreciation). Finally, we must
overlay to all this communication a high dose of Affect, or emotion. We have to share
stories or utilize our tone in order to make people feel like wanting to do something on
an emotional level.

3. The Influence Model


This model explains that, in order to influence others over the long term, we must
teach them how to THINK. The more articulate and explicitly we become in sharing
how people should think about themselves, others, and the world, the more we shape
their point of view and thus their life. Second, we gain influence by CHALLENGING
others to demonstrate more character, to improve their relationships, and to contribute
more to meaningful things. Finally, we must be ROLE MODELS for all of this - living in
congruence with what we espouse and demonstrating our own ways of thinking and
growth.

4. The Leadership Model


This leadership framework, called E6, represents six practices required to enact
leadership. Each E is addressed Envision, Enlist, Embody, Empower, Evaluate, and
Encourage. Envision is about creating a compelling vision for ourselves and those we
lead. Enlist requires us to engage potential collaborators and to work with them to
create a vision that reflects mutual purposes. We must also express our vision in clear,
persuasive terms. In Embody, we remind ourselves to walk our talk and to lead with a
genuine focus on becoming a role model for others. The complex idea of empowering
collaborators to lead and serve is dealt with in Empower. This involves granting those
we lead with resources, decision-making authority and trust. Evaluate means we must
continually assess our progress toward our vision as well as our peoples performance
and vision. Finally, Encourage reminds us to lift those around us, sustain hope, and
keep our own emotions in check as we seek higher states of motivation and morality.
