The Strathmore and District Agricultural

Society was pleased to announce they are
debt free and ended the year with a balanced budget in 2014.
One of the ways that was done, according to President Brad Walls, was by making sure monies coming in and out of different departments were being properly
allocated to give a true financial representation of the Society.
What we decided this year, our administration team, we worked some of where
the money was going to make it a better
reflection of what each department actually cost, what the revenue was and reallocate those expenses to what was really
costing those monies, and what programs
were making, said Walls.
We had some expenses that were being
charged to the general grounds maintenance when it was specifically not for that
project.
In the past the Society had opted to keep
their debt due to low interest rates.
The board decided it was very important for us to be debt free and we paid
off our existing loans and currently we are
100 per cent debt free, which is something
were very proud of, said Walls.
The previous administrations have done
a very good job of cutting costs and running very tight, lean ship and as a result
were now the ones that are reaping the
benefits of having no debt, which is very
important.
In addition to a balanced budget, and
being debt free, the Society also turned a
profit, and is at the point of again possibly
having a conversation about what people
would like to see. One example is a multiuse facility.
We say multi-use, were talking about
multi-facet almost. So it will have the potential for indoor events for rodeos, or cattle penning, were really trying not to say
this is what its going to look like; were
saying, what is going to be the best thing
for us and obviously whats going to make
it so we can make money as well, said
Walls.
Discussions will be ongoing to determine different ways the Ag. Society can
become a year-round facility.

a few minutes, Walker was found deceased. Not many additional
details have been released about the case, but Strathmore RCMP

Joining the VSU team

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Michelle Woods has made
a career working as a disability management consultant,
helping people get through
an illness or injury and recover.
So it was almost a natural
fit for her to take on the role
of program coordinator for
the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society.
Victim Services is certainly a little bit astray from that
but the work is similar, helping people kind of assess
their personal situation and
the barriers that are keeping
them from moving forward
or navigating their situation.
The process is still the same
so thats really what was intriguing to me, said Woods.
Before joining the team

seven months ago, she didnt

have a full understanding
of what the volunteer advocates do day-to-day, and she
admits it has been a steep
learning curve.
Her approximately nine
years of non-profit leadership - working with a board,
doing grant writing, and partnership cultivation however, is lending itself well to her
new role.
The biggest challenge for
now is waiting for the completion of the enhanced security clearance. Until then
she is limited in her ability to
help the staff and volunteers
when it comes to working
with victims and the files.
Its not uncommon, its
a challenge across all of Alberta with all of the Victim
Service Units, that staff are in
this loop. So were just doing

the best that we can in the

interim until that process is
complete, said Woods.
The enhanced clearance
involves a criminal record
check, a look into your entire
family, and the interview of
family, friends, and acquaintances to ensure the person
has the right personality for
the role, and that there is
nothing that would be a danger to the RCMP detachment.
Woods, in the meantime,
has been focusing on the
policies, procedures and
framework, making sure everything is the best it can be.
Essentially what I would
hope for this department is
that were able to grow our
volunteer advocate group
and kind of stabilize the
training and support thats
offered to them to be able to
complete their roles success-

fully, said Woods.

Because the advocates are
out in the public as support
in emotionally charged situations, she wants to ensure
the systems and procedures
are in place to allow them
to do their job safely and
to make sure they have the
skills required.

Ag scholarship opportunities
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Agriculture is the backbone of many
communities, and its important to the
Strathmore and District Agriculture Society that students continue to explore
different aspects of the field.
The Society is offering five $500
scholarships to students enrolled in a
post-secondary institution focusing on
an agriculture-related field of study. Applications are being accepted until June
30.
Its not just limited to Strathmore, its
for Wheatland County residents as well,
so if you want just throw your name
in there. Theres a criteria that must be

met, were working very closely with

the high schools to really get the advisors knowing that we have this grant
available, said President Brad Walls.
One reason the scholarship is important to Walls personally is because
there seems to be a stronger disconnect
than ever when it comes to kids and
agriculture. Many think the stores are
where milk, eggs and other produce
and meat come from. Walls realized
this in a conversation he had with his
daughter while at Sobeys one day.
Kids really are getting this mentality
that eggs come from the store, or beef
comes from the store, but really where
it comes from is the farm. Having an
agriculture background myself I under-

stood that, so I started to educate my

daughter, said Walls.
Successful applicants must have
proof of being a Strathmore or Wheatland County resident and student, and
are asked to attach a copy of their high
school transcript with the application.
They must have achieved 70 per cent
or higher in their Grade 12 year, attach
three references who must not be related to the applicant and write an essay
explaining their community involvement and reason for pursuing an agricultural career.
The application can be picked up directly at the Ag. Society. For more information call 403-934-5811 or email
info@strathmorestampede.com.

TAX INSTALLMENT PAYMENT PLAN

The next regular

Council Meeting
will be
February 4 & 18, 2015

The monthly Tax Installment Payment Plan allows taxpayers to

make automatic monthly payments for taxes rather than a single
annual payment. Paying on a monthly basis makes budgeting
easier. If you want to join, please contact the Town Tax Department
at 403-361-2114 or come in to the Town Office. We will complete
your application and require your signature and a void cheque.
All persons on the T.I.P.P. program are penalty exempt.
How does the Plan Work?
The tax year is from January to December. Your first payment for
the current year taxes would be January 1st. If you enroll after
January a lump sum payment for any lapsed months must be paid.
A 2% administration fee is applied to this payment amount. The first
five payments are based on the previous years tax levy. Changes to
the installment amount as a result of increases or decreases to the
annual levy will be effective for the last seven payments. You will be
notified on your tax notice of the new installment amount. If you are
on the payment plan you do not need to reapply.

HOME BUSINESS?

Do you operate a Home-based Business? Are you aware that in the

Town of Strathmore, anyone operating a business from residence
requires a Development Permit to operate a home-based business?
There are two types of home-based businesses in Strathmore.
1. Home Office: you have no clients coming to your residence to
receive services. All business is conducted by phone, fax, and
computer or, you go to your clients home to deliver your services.
Several examples of a Home Office: website management,
contractors providing mobile contractor services electrician,
plumber or handy-man, mobile massage therapists, mobile
counselling services.
2. Home Occupation: on a regular basis you have a limited number
of clients coming to your home to receive services. For example:
hairdressers, massage therapists, esthetics, dressmakers, small
engine or household appliance repairs, music instructors, tutoring.
Also, both Home Office and Home Occupation business operations
require the issuance of a yearly Town of Strathmore Business
License.
Please contact Planning and Development (403) 934-3133 for more
information, an application and applicable fees or, visit the Towns
website: www.strathmore.ca.

St. Johns wort is an herbal medication often
suggested for mild depression. Its very important
to remember that it does have an effect on brain
chemicals. If your doctor prescribes a prescription
antidepressant, be sure to discontinue the St. Johns
wort. The duplication could have serious side
effects.
Breastmilk is sometimes called liquid gold, the
best food for newborns and recommended for at
least the first six months of life. Breastmilk boosts
immunity and protects against many childhood
infections. Now, Harvard researchers are suggesting
that breastfeeding will produce better language skills
by the age of 3 and a higher IQ by the age of seven.
All good recommendations for breastfeeding.
There are many health scams out there. Be wary
of the use of words like natural (doesnt equate
with safe), or miracle or the phrases: Its so easy
or It worked for me. Theres even a weight-loss
program that promises youll lose weight while
you sleep. Check carefully before you buy. Talk
to your doctor and pharmacist to get some rational
perspective on these claims.
When a company releases a generic drug, every
effort is made to to have it look very similar to
the original brand name drug. This will reduce
confusion and help the patient continue to take
the drug as the doctor ordered. Generics are very
common in Canada. If you have any questions about

Olivia Wilson (l-r), Zhara Harney, Megan Mertz, Kayty Thompson, Tristan Payne and Laura Sader are
excited to be preparing for the upcoming gala concert with the Albertas Childrens Choir.

Strengthening
their singing voices
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Each year students from Brentwood
Elementary Schools choir participate in
the Alberta Childrens Choir (ACC). Last
year, due to the volume of participants,
the ACC was split into North and South.
The six students from Brentwood will
get to make music with 80 other choristers from central and southern Alberta,
working with Christy Elsner, founder
and director of Allegro Choirs of Kansas
City, who will be accompanied by Faye
Klassen.
Brentwood School first sent students
to the ACC approximately 20 years ago
and has participated most years since
that initial trip.
I just think its a fabulous opportunity for the kids to sing with kids from
around the province, southern Alberta
now. They get to meet other children,
they get to work with other conductors,
they get to work with kids who sing at
private choirs, said Carolyn Steeves,
Brentwoods music teacher.
I think its just eye-opening. I know
for my own children when they were
younger they went to music camps and
it was pivotal, it was life-changing experiences. I think its testament that five
of the six of these kids did it last year.
Each of the five returning students
had such a great time last year there
was no doubt they wanted to return
again this year.
It was a lot of fun. I loved it because
I met a lot of new friends and I sang a

lot, said Megan Mertz.

Because we got to perform at the
concert last year and we will this year
too. Its a blast to see your hard work
pay off, said Tristan Payne.
I wanted to soar with my music and
ACC helped me do that. I plan to do as
much as I can to fly to new heights,
said Kayty Thompson.
This is the first year with ACC for Olivia Wilson, who signed up because she
loved the Brentwood choir and knew
she would love this too.
The students will each be singing a
few different songs.
My favourite song is Jambo because
it isnt precise, it is fun, jumpy and
you get to scoop with your voice, said
Payne.
Laura Sader also picked Jambo as
her favourite because her mom heard
it on Mt. Kilimanjaro, and because she
enjoys the feel of it.
Isabel and the Bear because it is a
very fun song, said Zhara Harney.
Thompson also agreed it is her favourite due to the playfulness of it.
For Mertz, Deaf Old Woman won out
because of the alto and soprano alternate parts, and also because it is fun.
Im going up Yonder because it is a
beautiful song, slow but amazing. Also
Sally Gardens because of the story and
I had a paint box just the story behind
it, said Wilson.
The Gala Concert is being held in Calgary at the Knox United Church on Feb.
7 at 7 p.m. and is open for everyone to
attend.

Strathmore RCMP are currently

investigating a hit and run collision
that occurred at the Crystal Ridge
Esso gas station on Wheatland Trail.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. on January
6th a dark colored SUV attended
the gas station when it struck one
of the gas pumps. The SUV took off
from the scene before reporting the
occurrence to staff. The gas pump
had been damaged and therefore had
to be shut down. Witnesses describe
the vehicle as possibly being a dark
blue Nissan Pathfinder. If you have any
information that could assist in solving
this investigation please contact the

Thought for
the Week
~

Old age is
no place
for sissies.

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Concerned citizens packed
the Lyalta Hall on Jan. 15, to
get clarification on what was
happening with the ongoing
saga of Muirfield and Homestead area sewer removal
problems.
The website www.muirfieldcommunityassociation.
com shows examples of the
strong community formed in
the area, with many positive
activities for residents. However, homeowners are frustrated with the delays and
increased costs added for
sewer removal and treatment
in their community. Since
2006 the Muirfield community has been seeking solutions
with developers, Rocky View
County, Wheatland County
and lawyers to solve the treatment and removal of sewage
that they expected was part
of their home utility services
when they purchased their
homes.
This wastewater issue is
the biggest issue as a community we have faced and could
be a make or break, not only
for many existing residents,
but also potential prospective residents, said resident
Scott Kolawaski in a letter to
the homeowners association.
We all know the long list of
items that we understood to
be part of moving to Muirfield that were promised by
the developer, and that is in
our bylaws and that have not
been fulfilled, while we as
residents are held to account.
As disappointing and frustrating as many of those items
are, this one is dire and detrimental to our community.
The meetings town hall
format allowed residents to
get answers from a sevenmember panel.
Jim Souza, spokesperson of
Muirfield Land Corp. clarified
that he was on the panel as
an employee of the past and
new owners.
I am here tonight because
I feel for you people, said
Souza. If someone knocked
on my door and told me it
would cost me X amount of
dollars to flush my toilet every month, I would be looking at me the way you are
looking at me right now.
He gave background about
the original owner of the
Muirfield Land Corp. stating
the original owner had passed
away and the company had
gone into receivership. He
said millions of dollars were
lost in the transaction to date.
On the condition of sale
of the foreclosed company,
Rocky View County stipulated that the new purchasers
would not hold Rocky View
County to the old sewage
removal and treatment contract. Residents were notified
Rocky View County would no
longer provide sewage trucking and treatment as of April
1, 2015. Souza said the deadline definitely highlighted the
urgency for a solution and

stated the clock was ticking

and something needed to be
done.
In frustration, residents
turned to Wheatland County
for help. Wheatland County
council had originally approved the Muirfield subdivision, providing the utility services were in place.
Wheatland council had several meetings with residents to
aid in finding alternative solutions for the area, when arrangements with Rocky View
and the developers were collapsing.
Wheatland Council did approve, with conditions, an
initial solution put together
by the Homesteads development and Cattleland Corp. to
run a pipeline from the area
to sewage lagoons near the
Cattleland feedlot. Cattleland
would recycle the effluent
into various products utilized
by their company. A new privately owned corporation
called Wheatland Utility Corporation would handle the
treatment process and deliver
services to both Muirfield residents, the 2,400 new homes
of the Homesteads and possibly other developments in
the future.
However in a Catch-22 dilemma, Bill Maher, developer for the Homesteads and
partner in Wheatland Utility
Corporation, said it was recognized that the subdivision
would be approved with conditions, but one of the conditions would be the provision
of sanitary sewer service; but
without approval of the subdivision, there would be no financing for the system. Maher
said they could not invest the
time and money in the design
and construction of the sewage system until they have a
conditional approval of their
subdivision application. He
clarified banks will not provide money for infrastructure
unless there is an approved
development.
Patricia Maloney, land planner for the development,
said it is taking Wheatland
County a very long time to
process the subdivision. She
stated that the county has
had resource issues and the
developer has dealt with six
planners during this process.
With each new planner the
process had to be reviewed
again and again. There was a
feeling voiced that the current
administration has not made
Homesteads application a priority, even though they know
that it is linked to a solution
for the Muirfield sewer problem.
Members from the audience wanted to know what
could be done move the process ahead.
Councillor Brenda Knight,
Wheatland County representative for Division 5, chaired
the meeting.
Your voice is better than
mine, said Knight. Once
they (Wheatland County) receive one hundred phone
calls and letters from resi-

dents asking what is going on with the

Homesteads and Muirfield and why it is
not moving forward something will
happen.
She said there are many excuses why
there were delays in the past, including
no inter-municipal agreements between
counties, staff turnovers, bureaucratic
red tape and other delays; however, she
also stressed it would be more productive to put past disagreements aside and
direct energy to future solutions.
Brainstorming developed strategies
for residents to instigate positive action.
They were encouraged to:
Clarify the key messages and push for
Alberta Environment approval for the
proposed sewage removal and treatment
plan.
Talk to the MLA Jason Hale about the
government solutions and approvals
from Alberta Environment to speed up
the process.
Conduct a letter writing campaign to
the Wheatland County Reeve and council requesting the issue be placed on the
council agenda and the floor open for
resident discussion.
There were also options for interim solutions for sewage removal that residents
were to consider:
Litigation sue the developer, Rocky
View, Wheatland and anyone else they
felt was involved in failure to provide
service but it was noted it could take
months, money and increased sewer prices with no permanent solution attained.
Purchase a removal truck and contract
a driver to facilitate their own sewage removal through the Homeowners Association. Prices would likely remain at around
$450 per month per resident, but when
the permanent solution was ready, they
could sell the truck and recoup some
money.
Pay a private operator to pump and
haul. This is the worst-case scenario and
is estimated at $480 per resident per
month.
Create a debenture or loan, which
will borrow enough money to do the
pump and haul until a permanent sewage solution is reached with charges to
homeowners monthly at a reduced rate
amortized over a 10-year period. It was
estimated the rate would be under $100
per month. This could be done with the
help of Wheatland County or Wheatland
Utility Corp.
Do nothing and see what happens. This
was the most uncertain and the homeowners could face provincial fines and
litigation for any contamination issues.
Those in attendance wanted to consider their options and asked that all homeowners be notified of the options and
any meetings moving forward.

Mustang Sally
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
A big shout out to Molly, whos s been one of
my faithful readers over the last few years! I mean,
its not like anyones tracking the readership or
anything, for all I know there are only 11 of you!
Anyway, thanks to all of you for your kind words,
and Molly, I promise no more Coronation Street
bashing!
Like many of you, Ive always been a car guy.
I especially love classic cars made by the Big
3: Ford, GM, and Chrysler. This is ironic, because
I know nothing about engines, transmissions, or
anything to do with suspension, or brakes! I can
gas up, fill my tires, and maybe check the oil. I
was going to include boosting a car battery, but I
have blown a hole in the top of one years ago, so
Im not sure Id count that as a skill. When I was
about 14, my old Hungarian uncle (the moonshiner) gave my brother and me a 1950 Bel Air coupe.
Sadly, the engine was thrashed, we had no money
or engine know how, so the beast sat for about a
year (no By-Law officers then!), and it eventually
got towed away!
Fast forward to Grade 12, and I had bought the
car of my dreams a 1971 Fastback. These cars
had gotten bigger, had a very flat back window,
and a lot of power for a 17 year old kid. I never
got any tickets or in any accidents, but the weirdest one did happen to it in my first year of university. One morning, a guy knocked on our apartment door to tell me hed been in an accident with
my Mustang. Now I was sleepy, but I thought this
was impossible! You see, we were both parked
nose to nose with a cement block between us.
How in the world did he hit my car? He called me
down, and there in the basement parkade, was
the strangest accident scene Id ever seen. His big
panel van was sitting on the crumpled hood of my
dream car! All I could muster was a how did this
happen, I dont get it?
He went on to tell me that he was parked on
his block heater extension cord and slipped it in
drive instead of reverse.
Somehow, it zipped over the cement block,
coming to a peaceful rest on the hood of my car!
Needless to say, his insurance company paid for
everything, but I would have loved to have heard
that conversation! The guy eventually moved on
to jewelry sales, and if you remember my dumb

engagement ring story he was the guy who

sold me Debs ring, or rather he sold it to Debbie,
and I was put on her monthly payment plan!
Now, I had been enjoying my Silver 1994 Mustang, for the past five years. I had dropped that
on Deb after I bought her a replacement 25th Anniversary silver ring (to bury the bad memory
ring!)
However, this latest fall I decided to be practical
and sell it. Practical, Shmactical I had sellers
remorse, as soon as it was gone! It didnt help that
the buyer e-mailed me a month later to tell me it
was mint theyd had it up on a lift, and there
was no rust anywhere! Grrrrr so, I decided you
only go around once, and I should look for another Mustang. Imagine my surprise when after a
few weeks of Kijiji shopping, there on a Saturday
night, was MY 1994 mustang! I got Brennen to
play spy using his girlfriends e-mail address to
ask questions. The guy replied immediately, praising the car, and then to my pain, he said, I bought
it from an old teacher in Strathmore!
I mean, I get selling it, but really, ya gotta insult
me first?
So, believe it or not, I bought back my Mustang!
This was another surprise for Deb, as all she had
told me to do, was ask questions, see if it was my
car. Oh it was, and it became it, again! Surprise,
Deb! She did ask me if I was nuts, and who in the
world does these things buy back stuff youve
sold?
Of course, the answer is me!
I paid more money, but he did put on new tires
and rims, tinted the glass, detailed the engine, and
even had it waxed and polished. It sounds good,
doesnt it? Well, Im not so sure.
Deb has informed me that if I like the car so
much, maybe I should sleep in it, in the garage!
She cant be too mad, can she? I mean she did
seem worried about the cold garage she told
me to run the engine for awhile. She probably
wants to make sure Im comfortable. I mean the
lights are now off, and the big garage doors
closed

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hale jump hurts

To the Editor
Hello My Friends by Jason
Hale. With a friend like Hale who
needs enemies? How could you
do this to the people who worked
so hard to get you elected as a
candidate for Wildrose and all
those people who voted for you
(including myself) in the last election? In a democracy, it is by the
people for the people. You truly
are a traitor to democracy.
Prentice wants to spend taxpayers dollars for an early election. Why? That is a waste of
taxpayers dollars as the Conser-

vatives have majority, and if they

follow the rules, it is to be held
in 2016.
Prentice is trying to con Albertans into believing that oil prices
are never again going up. Dont
believe him. This is a good way
for him and his chosen few to put
in a sales tax that will remain forever no matter how high a barrel
of oil will get.
Prentice, Ill give you a few
ideas for you and your party to reduce the debt that has been made
by the Conservative Party over 40

Help in a time of crisis

SHANNON LECLAIR

When disaster strikes, no matter in
what form, the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society (VSU) is called in to
be a shoulder to cry on, and to help you
get back on your feet.
They assist anyone who has been a
victim of a crime, or is going through
trauma, whether its sudden death, a fatality on the highway, or it can be a parent having issues with their children and
not be criminally related.
Its kind of whatever someone needs
as far as resources or referrals, or just
making sure theyre okay, said Tammy
Cooper, assistant program coordinator
with VSU.
There is nothing that we have not
done, honestly there is nothing that has
ever come up where I have said, I cannot do that for you.
The flooding of Siksika is one big example of where the advocates helped.
All of the advocates were on hand sorting donations, dropping them off, going
from home to home to find out what
people needed and then try to find those
items for them. They put in hundreds of
hours helping in every way they could.

court information, so we keep everybody

which is pretty important, said Cooper.

I know if youve never been through
the court system its pretty daunting, you
dont really know where to get the information from, you dont really have all
day to sit and wait, so thats a big part of
what we do.
The advocates, who are all volunteers,
help with court preparation, and court
accompaniment. An advocate is with a
victim from as soon as the crime is reported until the very end of the process.
They also help with victim impact
statements, finding out if there is restitution for money back from the accused,
connecting with resources, counselling
or shelters and much more.
A volunteer advocate is there to provide the emotional support in the immediate crisis and then help them navigate
the situation as best they can. If theyre
not able to understand the legal aspects
then we can kind of show them the
way for lack of a better word, of what
to expect and questions they should
be asking and supports they should be
considering, said Program Coordinator
Michelle Woods.
Its people in the community giving
back to the community and we use those
resources to help our victims through
difficult situations.
The advocates carry a kit of sorts in
their vehicle that has pamphlets, a quilt,
teddy bears and other things that could
help in an immediate situation.
In the case of a sudden death VSU will
stay in contact with the person, or family, until they feel the right supports are
in place to help them continue to cope.
There are currently 19 advocates, and
Woods said she would like to see that
number closer to 40. Theres also room
for two board members.
One change Woods has implemented
since coming on as program coordinator
is the way advocates respond to calls.
We do require two responders on ev-

ery call. Theres two levels of advocates,

theres a first responder, so thats somebody who has completed all of their
training, their enhanced clearance and
has experience out in the field, said
Woods.
They would take the lead when they
go out, introduce themselves to the victim, assess the situation and determine
next steps.
The second responder is their back up,
that is somebody who has most likely
just completed their clearance and they
have limited experience responding to a
call, so they are there to both observe,
but support the process.
At any given time a victim is in shock
and so their behaviour may sometimes
not be normal for them, this helps with
ensuring the safety of the responders.
Another change is that Cooper or
Woods carry an emergency phone that
the RCMP calls first. From there, whoever is on call coordinates the attending
advocate based on the need. This gives
them the ability to know which advocates will be responding to a call. The
advocate is then required to contact the
emergency phone when they leave a
scene so that the person on call knows
when they are back.
The Strathmore VSU also covers Gleichen and Siksika, Chestermere, and all
of the communities in between. In the
last quarter, October to December, Cooper said there were approximately 250
active files. She said a lot of that could
be files they are still following through
with from 2012, but said the average is
250 to 400 active files per quarter.
Its an emotional job for sure, but
its fulfilling. As somebody coming in I
couldnt ask for anything more than to
have a dedicated person like Tammy and
the volunteers for sure, said Woods.

Community Spotlight: Strathmore Municipal Library

CHELSEA DYCK
SAY Times Contributor

One important service that is provided for
Strathmores citizens tends to be overlooked. The
Strathmore Municipal Library is important to our
community because they ensure information and
programming is accessible to all.
The library has something for everyone! In addition to fiction and non-fiction books, the Strathmore Municipal Library has audio books, DVDs,
e-readers, and TV shows that you can use in the
library or sign out to take home. They have a set of
Victer readers, which read books aloud to you. For
the younger generation, the library supplies Tumble books, which are e-picture books for kids. The
library also provides students in grades three to 12
access to Solaro, a study program that is made by
the producers of the KEY study guides.
On the technology side of things the library has
free Wi-Fi for all its patrons, disc cleaning, and free
access to computers (which all come equipped with
Minecraft). For those who do not have a scanner or
fax machine at home you can go to the library to
copy or send important documents.
If you find technology intimidating, the Library
employs a technology tutor to help equip people to
new gadgets. Many people have never used a computer before so this experience can be life changing
for them. Rachel Dick-Hughes, Director of Library
Service, said that she had one couple come in that

Standing up to terrorists
KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

I wish everyone in our riding all the best in 2015.
The New Year brings with it new opportunities, rejuvenated spirits and a fresh outlook on the year
ahead. Sadly, the New Year has also brought with
it shocking and horrific terrorist attacks in France.
Following the terrorist assaults we sustained in
Canada last October, it goes to show that no one
is immune from violent extremism. As your Member of Parliament, I want to assure everyone that
these attacks only serve to strengthen my resolve
to support our Conservative governments efforts
to stand up to radicals who choose to use violence
and criminal acts against innocent civilians.
The people of France came under attack because
they support a core democratic value one that
all democracies share our freedom of expression. These terrorists have declared war against all
countries and people who believe in peace, freedom, and democracy. Canada and our allies will
not be intimidated. Canadians have seen the heartwrenching stories of minorities being persecuted
in Iraq and Syria. Together, we are more resolved
than ever to unite in the collective fight against
global terrorism.
To be clear, free and democratic Western nations
are not being attacked because of our efforts to
stand up against terrorism in specific areas in the
world. Rather, these barbaric acts are perpetrated

by jihadi terrorists who have declared war on any

country that values freedom, openness and tolerance like ours.
Our Canadian Armed Forces are currently standing up to ISIL because they have been threatening
attacks in Canada for a long time, including before the current mission. That is why we are taking
part in the coalition that is currently conducting
air strikes against ISIL, and supporting the security
forces in Iraq in their fight against this terrorist
scourge.
Canada and our allies face an increasingly complex national security threat posed by a brutal and
violent international jihadist movement. We must
adapt to this evolving threat environment. Our
Government will continue to ensure our security
and law enforcement agencies have the tools they
need to prevent, detect, deny and respond to acts
of terrorism, in order to keep Canadians safe. Our
Government plans to bring forward new national
security legislation as an important step forward in
our countrys counter-terrorism capabilities.

Pass the Salt

WE ALL NEED A LITTLE LAUGHTER!

A couple of weeks ago, the youth at our
church put on a supper, complete with a
mystery evening that was focused around a
hillbilly wedding. The event was a fundraiser,
as many youth will be going on missions, and it
was quite successful for that purpose.
But what I saw was another great purpose
being met that night. A number of adults in
the congregation took on roles in the church,
dressed up as hillbillies, and played out a
marriage scenario between the Hatfields and
the McCoys, complete with nattering back and
forth, itching and scratching, and measuring
up for caskets.
What was the best part of the evening ... what
was its greatest success? The incredible music of laughter that could be heard as people
watched, and participated, and got to be just
a little bit silly. We all need a little laughter ...
There is no doubt many are facing struggles
and challenges and hard times, right now.
There has been no end to negative reports on
the news. Families have been facing scuffles
and trials of many forms. We have all had our
own personal tests to deal with of late. And
the question rises ... how do we, how can we
deal with all the hard stuff from day to day?
God, in his wisdom, gave us many resources,
but one of the greatest
of them all, is the ability
to smile or to laugh. At
funerals I often tell people
that at such occasions, it is
okay, and it is expected that
there will be tears ... but
there should also be smiles
and laughter. Because even
in the somber moments,
we need to be able to look
back and remember times
that we have shared that

brought smiles to us. Watch children they

can find laughter and joy in the simplest
and sometimes the most basic of things ... a
puppy sneezing, a silly joke, a brightly colored
balloon, a silly bug or a shining star. A gentle
tickle and a hug from someone they love.
In Psalm 126, these words are shared ... Our
mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues
with songs of joy. Then it was said among the
nations, The Lord has done great things for
them, The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.
There is a lot of serious stuff going on, in our
lives, our homes, our community, our world. If
we are to carry on, if we are to remain positive
and strong and able to carry on, we need to
seek out and remember and find things that
bring a smile to our faces, a laugh to our
hearts, a reflection of the goodness and promise of God for protection and compassion,
even in the midst of our darkness.
So in this month when we remember love and
red hearts and chocolate and Valentines Day,
may we spend time finding those things that
bring a smile to our faces, and the love of God
to our lives ... amen.

Carolines Cart makes life

easier for Langdon family
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Last year Tara and Brock Lockie saw
just how generous the community of
Langdon could be. The family had
been fundraising to buy a pool for
their son Braxton, and thanks to community support they met the $30,000
goal and had the pool built by the end
of June 2014.
It was amazing the community support that came from the Zumbathon,
from the Neighbourhood Church in
Langdon, (from) strangers that heard
our story in the paper and wanted to
help out. It was incredible the amount
of support that we got, said Tara Lockie.
Recently Buy-Low Foods in Langdon
also showed their support for the family, and for other families in the community, by purchasing a Carolines Cart

that was designed specifically for special needs children.

It is an awesome purchase that BuyLow made for the community. I know
there are other families with different
needs that will be able to use it, said
Lockie.
Braxton in particular needed some
sort of accommodation when we go
grocery shopping up until now because he cant sit up in a typical shopping cart because of all of his conditions.
I would have to have him in his
stroller and I could either shop as
much as a basket could carry which is
not very much, or Ive also attempted
to push the stroller and pull a regular
shopping cart which still doesnt work
very well.
She said some of the employees had
seen her shopping, and struggling, and
they helped get the ball rolling. Tyler
Gludovatz, store manager of Buy-Low
Foods, met with Lockie, saw how awkward it was for her to get her groceries,
and looked into the Carolines Carts.
When they told me the cart was on
order I couldnt believe it, because I
know a lot of people really have to
fight to try and get any sort of change,
said Lockie.
The cart cost approximately $1,200
and is money well spent in the eyes of
Buy-Low and the community.
For us its not about the money,
its about helping the community. Its
something for everyone, and its something that diversifies us and helps the
community. Thats what Buy-Low is a
big part of is our community and its
just one way we can show that, said
Gludovatz.
The Lockies found out when Tara
was pregnant with Braxton that something was wrong, but they werent
sure what. Since birth Braxton, now
19-months-old, has had surgeries to
remove cataracts from both eyes, and
had a feeding tube inserted. He has
also had MRIs and EEGs and x-rays. He
is blind, at night he needs oxygen, and
last year was he was having 20 to 50
seizures per day.
Right before Christmas we found
out why Braxton is the way he is. He
has a gene mutation thats extremely
rare, said Lockie.
The geneticist said theres probably around 100 people in the world
with this mutation. They dont know
a whole lot, discovering genes is so
new there could be more, but they are
just unlocking our genes right now, its
very rare and when this gene mutates,
it means the brain cant form properly, so it explains why Braxtons brain
couldnt form properly.
The gene mutation is called TUBA1A,

family after Buy-Low Foods in Langdon purchased a Carolines Cart to help families with
special needs children. Braxton Lockie looks like
hes enjoying the new cart.

and there is very little information to

be found on it. The Lockies also found
out that they do not carry that gene,
which is good news with a second
baby due in April.
Braxton had been doing well for
most of the summer and the fall. He
was eating with his mouth, swimming
in the pool and had begun saying
some words. In December things took
a turn for the worse, and he is still trying to recover from everything.
His seizures started to get really out
of control and we werent really sure
what was the right path to take. We
tried to give him increased medications, but that didnt seem to be the
right path, so weve actually weaned
him back off of his meds, he seems
to be doing better again, said Lockie.
On Jan. 12 the Lockies were told
that Braxton is aspirating so they will
have to go back to tube feeding him.
Now that we found out about this
gene mutation, and we also have a
more official name for his form of epilepsy, its become more clear to us that
his life expectancy is very short, there
are not very many babies that even
make it to childhood, it kind of seems
like two years is a lot of kids life expectancy with the type of conditions
that he has, so we are happy to just
take it one day at a time, said Lockie.
Were very hopeful that well see
second birthday and beyond, especially now that hes bouncing back after
Christmas.

The project came about after some volunteers saw the

need for more ice in Strathmore because it was very limited
for public skating.
It was a group of volunteers that got together a couple of
years ago and started working towards it. The Ag Society was
approached first and thought it was a fantastic idea and they
generously donated the land, said Shave. Then it was deciding how the rink would be operated and maintained after
the fact. We partnered with the town, they will maintaining
the surface and handling the operations.
The outdoor rink will be the main attraction, but the intention is for it to be a multi-sport facility.
First of all, we just dont want it to be a rink, its going
to be a concrete surface that can be used all year round. So
maybe lacrosse, figure skating, public skating for families,
(and) we want to put up basketball nets for the summer
time, said Shave. We want it to be very community driven.
We want local members of the community, businesses to be
involved, they ll be approached for sponsorship.
The committee encourages everyone to use it, saying that
it will improve the recreational options in the Strathmore
area.
(The feedback) has been really positive. I mean we havent
done a lot of advertising because we did really want to make
sure that everything was in place before we took it to the
community, said Shave.
If you would like to get on board or further information,
you can leave a message on their Facebook page, Strathmore Family Outdoor Rink, and someone will connect with

Sharing stories
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

A new take on storytelling is coming
to the Strathmore Municipal Library on
Jan. 30. Tall Tales - Fostering Literacy
Through Storytelling is coming, thanks
to John and Wanda Reinholdt of Reinholdt Productions.
The reason this program came about
is Family Literacy Day is on Jan. 27 and
so we are doing this in celebration of
Family Literacy Day, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services.
What Wanda and John will be doing,
is they will be coming and telling stories but in a different form of storytelling versus what we do here at the library for our storytime. Generally most
stories we do at storytime are reading
from a book.
Wanda Reinholdt said basically she
and her husband will be sharing two
stories, an African one and a Jewish
one.
Its sharing stories in a very engaging and fun way and its learning from
the story and enjoying the story, said
Reinholdt.
I love telling stories, its one of my
favourite things to do because its profound.
Both stories are very different but
will also be something adults and children will get a lot out of.

age literacy when children are going

into their school years, said Erison.
Research has shown when you encourage literacy in early developmental
ages kids will go into school more prepared and will perform better.
On Jan. 30 Reinholdt Productions
will have two hours to tell the two tales
before opening up into discussion with
attendees.
Whats really interesting about story
is we all get different things out of it,
thats the cool part about story, said
Reinholdt
The discussion is not this is what
the story is about. The discussion is
what did you take from the story because thats the beautiful thing about
story, is it can mean something completely different to you.
Everyone is welcome to attend the
free program, and no registration is required.

The program is open to all ages, we

like to say from young children to seasoned adults who value the entertainment of good story. I think it doesnt
matter what age you are, people love
stories, and storytelling can span all
ages from youngsters just learning
about books and stories to seniors who
love to tell historical stories and memorable stories from their past, said Erison.
Launching a new edition to celebrate
their 15th anniversary, said there is
more to come. To participate in the Tall

library on Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.
Another story, albeit an old one, recently confirmed and coming to the library is Larry Robinson, returning with
his Titanic exhibit on April 10. His Titanic memorabilia will also be on display at the beginning of April.

The UFA Bisons played a high-energy game against the Calgary Buffaloes
but fell 3-1 on Jan. 18 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Buffs force Bisons split

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

It was a highly anticipated game between the Calgary
Buffaloes and UFA Bisons at the Strathmore Family Centre on Sunday afternoon as both teams played physical,
skated hard and werent giving each other a lot of room in
the neutral zone.
Bisons assistant coach Dave Attwood thought his team
took too many unnecessary penalties and stopped using
their speed in the 3-1 loss to the Buffs.

We knew that the Buffaloes would be tough because

they gained some separation in the standings. The games
are just as important to us, for either that bye if were second or home ice advantage if were third, said Attwood.
Whats more important is that were trying to test ourselves
against the good teams. Yeah we lost today, but thats a split
with the Buffaloes, we won in their barn and they won in
ours so thats a team we got to have our best game against
and today we just took too many penalties.
He admits that the Buffaloes used their speed effectively
and the boys just could not seem to slow them down and
were one step behind.
Jordan McConnell scored the lone goal in the loss.
The Bisons played a much more consistent game on Saturday night in Lethbridge as they were able to get some
more separation from the fourth-place Hurricanes with a
4-2 win.
Captain Shane Fraser opened the scoring just 15 seconds
into the game with the assists going to William Conley and
Jordan McConnell.
The Hurricanes were able to get one back to tie it at one
after the first period.
Lethbridge was able to take the lead with 4:57 to go in
the second before Conley was able get the Bisons back on
even terms at 4:25, with assists going to Fraser and Sebastien Kilcommons.
The boys pulled away in the third as Zachary Vinnell
scored at the 10:20 mark from Conley and Quaid McBean
Conley scored his second of the game from McConnell
and Fraser at 2:25 to round out the offense.
The Bisons will conclude their regular season schedule
with three road games starting Feb. 7 (5:15 p.m.) against
the Calgary Northstars at the Max Bell Centre.

Kings special

The Wheatland Kings could have
inched closer to catching their opponent
on Saturday night, the Medicine Hat
Cubs, but fell to them 3-2 on home ice.
After being knotted at one through
two periods, the penalties piled up on
both sides and the Cubs were able to
capitalize on their special teams, while
the Kings had optimal 5-on-3 opportunities but had difficulties converting them.
I think the difference was special
teams, they capitalized on their 5-on3s and we didnt capitalize, said head
coach Jeremy Blumes. When we did get
possession, we didnt get to the front
of the net like we need to. That being
said, I thought our penalty kill was really good, Im sure we were more short-

handed than they were.

The game had a real physical tone to
it and Blumes thought his team was able
to gain momentum from it.
We did a good job of finishing our
checks and playing physical for the
most part and there is always times as
a coach where you want to see guys go
that extra mile to make sure that they
are winning the races, said Blumes.

that did not make it any easier with line

Zac Schillinger and Lucas Jones scored
in the loss.
The Kings know how valuable points
will be with five games remaining. Next

The 2015 Strathmore Lacrosse
season is right around the corner
and players can register online now
at www.strathmorelacrosse.com
President Chris Iversen is very
optimistic it will be another very
good season.
Because of the growth weve had
over the last couple of seasons, in
order to make lacrosse more accessible to young players, we have reduced the registration fees for Mini
Tyke and Tyke, said Iversen. We
are pleased to be offering a Lacrosse
Boot Camp for bantam, midget and
junior players in the weeks prior to
the start of the season. For a small
fee, they participate in a cross training camp in order to get into shape
for the upcoming season.
The goal for registration is to
have more players enrolled in the
sport and create a fun environment
for the kids.
The more players we have (will
result in) more teams, and more interest, which translates to greater
player development and fun. We
would also like to recruit more girls
to enhance our girls program, said
Iversen.
Registration fees for Mini Tykes
are $150, tyke is $250 and novice
is $335. When you get to the higher levels such as peewee it will be
$385, bantam is $405 and midget
is $415.
Deadline will be March 8. After
that there will be a $50 late registration fee and players will only be
accepted if there is room on a team.
If youre interested in playing
winter lacrosse and you are already
signed up for 2015 season, sessions
run every Saturday at the Trinity
Christian Academy and schedules
can be checked out on the website.
Iversen can be reached at president@strathmorelacrosse.com for
any questions or inquires.

Cougars show resiliency

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Crowther Memorial Junior High School junior varsity
boys and girls basketball teams improved their skills immensely during their home tournaments on Jan. 16-17.
The junior varsity boys showed strong play on the court as
they lost to Chestermere in the final, finishing second place
out of six teams.
We had a spirited and resilient team. There is very strong
leadership from our Grade 8s this year who have set the
tone for dedication, sportsmanship and a strong work ethic
for the new players coming in, said Alysia Bailey, junior varsity boys head coach. We played five games on Saturday and
kept our energy and intensity up all day. They worked great
as a team together and we had a lot of fun this weekend.
The boys did not play many games leading up to the tournament, but showed a lot of improvements in their first real

competition of the season.

We had a couple exhibition games
against HCC, but this was our first tournament. We have a very athletic and
passionate team, however many of our
players are new to the sport, said Bailey.
Girls coach Scott Sackett thought his
team never gave up despite having a
shorter bench.
The girls are learning how to compete for possession and they played
long minutes, since we had a small
team, and never gave up, said Sackett.
He noticed that the players were getting better with their overall play as the
tournament wore on.
The girls had really improved on fundamental basketball skills and learning
where to be on the court. Our second
year players are developing into good
leaders, said Sackett.
Both coaches would like to make the
Cougar basketball program better every year and advance kids to the senior
level.

Ice compete
in Golden Ring tourney
KEITH REYNOLDS
Strathmore Ice

The Strathmore Ice were a late entrant into the Calgary Esso
Golden Ring tournament from Jan. 16-18. For many of the girls
this was their first opportunity to play in this prestigious event.
They opened with a game against the Lacombe Edge. A great
start saw the team holding a 4-0 lead after the first period. The
Edge fought back in the second, but the Ice held on for a 7-5
win.
Scoring were Tatum Wathen and Ashley Lecavalier with two
each, Brianna Olson, Brooklyn Rienhart and Kaylin Larson with
singles. Holland Kelly and Rachel McCollister both had a pair
of assists.
Next up on Friday night were the Calgary Jets. The team got
a 5-0 lead only to see the Jets close to within one early in the
second. The Ice responded with three consecutive goals midway in the second and went on to an 8-5 victory.
Tatum Wathen had a hat trick, Kaylin Larson and Brooklyn
Rienhart with two each and Laura Taplin completed the scoring.
The third game of the round robin was against the Rockyford Ringers. The Ice trailed 2-1 after the first but were shutout
in the second. The final score was 6-1 for Rockyford. Their
first two wins were enough to propel the team into the playoff
round.
The quarterfinal opponent Saturday night was the Calgary
Bold. After an evenly matched first period the score was 2-2.
The Ice took a two-goal lead into the final minute only to see
the Bold score twice, the second with 16 seconds left on the
clock. A shootout would be needed to decide the winner.
Ashley Lecavalier put the Ice ahead in the second round and
when Erin Reynolds made her second save Jemma Warrack had
a chance to end it. She made no mistake, deking the Bold goaltender and giving her team a heart-stopping win.
Sunday mornings semi-final saw the team meet the Beaumont Dusters. The Dusters came out flying and built a 4-0 lead.
The Ice came to life and had closed the gap to 4-3 by the end
of the first period. They added three more goals to start the
second only to see the Dusters score three in a row late in the
period.
With their goalie out it was the Ices turn for some late-game
heroics, scoring with eight seconds left. Again a defenseman
was the hero, when Rachel McCollister joined the rush and put
the ring top shelf to give her team a spot in the final.
Ashley Lecavalier had a hat trick, Kierston Gron a pair with
Julia Bishop and Tatum Wathen adding singles.
The final was a rematch against the Rockyford Ringers. The
Ringers came out flying and had a 6-1 lead after the first period.
Though playing better in the second the lead was too much to
overcome. The final score was 11-5 with Rockyford earning a
well-deserved gold medal. Though disappointed in the loss, the
team was very proud of their silver medal. Winning two games
in overtime to make the final was a great experience.

Bisons host fundraiser

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The UFA Bisons in
partnership with four
other Foothills triple-A
associations, the AC Avalanche, Airdrie Extreme,
Rocky View Raiders and
Rocky Mountain Raiders,
will be hosting a fundraiser on Jan. 30 at the
Strathmore Civic Centre
starting at 6 p.m.
Highlights of the evening will include JR
Matthew Hypnotist and
Sportsnet hockey analyst
and former N.H.L. player
Mike Johnson, who will
be guest speaking.
The goal of the fundraiser is to reduce the
fees of playing with

triple-A programs and

to cover the cost of the
mentorship for coaches.
The Foothills triple-A
association is made up
of five feeder teams, and
thats Airdrie, Bow Valley, Okotoks, the Foothills Bisons, which is
High River, Claresholm
area and Strathmore,
said Greg Beauchamp,
marketing coordinator
for the Foothills triple-A
association. The Foothills is a development
feeder association, so all
these five teams work together to get players ultimately to the UFA Bisons
and other triple-A teams
as well.
The development of
coaches and players

starts at the double-A

level and the association
will mentor them along
so they can make the
next step to triple-A, but
they need costs covered
for the programs.
In a lot of ways, its
really to get the doubleA kids to the next level
and with that comes
mentorship, skills programs, coaching clinics
that is done through the
triple-A association,
said Beauchamp. Thats
where fundraising has to
happen because there is
a cost of renting ice (and)
getting mentorship.
There is a cost for the
coaches to be involved
because it is required
from minor midget 15

these clinics.
For
those
coaches, its mandatory for them to
go to the triple-As
clinic like UFAs
coach. Its recommended for the
double-As, but all
the coaches are
invited to go from
all five centres to
the coaching clinics, said Beauchamp.
These are all
factors as to why a
fundraiser is necessary for the cost
purposes of playing and coaching
the game.
Guests to the
fundraiser
can
expect a funfilled, entertaining night that will
help players be
involved in high
caliber hockey.
There will also

Warriors keeping
pace with Grizzlys
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Warriors kept within
striking distance of the first place Olds
Grizzlys after edging the Badlands
Longhorns 4-1 on Jan. 16 in Hussar.
The local bantam double-A team is
only five points behind after the win.
Jared Kirkpatrick opened the scoring
at 17:29 of the first on the power play
with Tyler Cardamore and Jayden Hendricks supplying the assists.
In the second, it was James Farmer
who made it 2-0 Warriors from Hendricks going into the third.
Majid Kaddoura notched one early
in the third with assists going to Tarun
Fizer and Mitch Fawcett.
Fizer scored at 6:22 on the power
play from Kaddoura and Hassan Akl.
The Longhorns were able to get one
back just under a minute later, but that
was all they could manage as the Warriors improved to 18-5-1 on the season.
Meanwhile, forwards Ty Skehar and
Tarun Fizer, along with defenceman
Jared Kirkpatrick and goalie Ty Tarvyd,
took part in the annual SCAHL All-Star
Game on Jan. 17 in Medicine Hat.

CHIEFS THUMP MOUNTAINEERS
The Wheatland Chiefs continued their
dominance of their opponents, as they
showed no mercy in blowing out the
Edge School Mountaineers 11-0 on Jan.
16 at the Edge School.
The win has cushioned the midget
double-As lead atop the standings with
a 21-4-1 record and nine points clear

of second-place
Okotoks.
Kody
Hammond led the way
with a hat trick
while Jason Hobson, Ryan Skytt,
Cole Busslinger,
Kaleb Robinson,
Chris
Rebeyka,
James
Farmer,
Jayden Smith and
Grady Strath supplied singles in
the win.

and goalie Nolan
Kent, represented the Chiefs on
Team South at the
All-Star game in

Jan. 17.
The Chiefs are
back in action this
weekend
when
they take on the
Okotoks
Oilers
(7:30 p.m.) in
Hussar on Jan. 23
and CBHA Blackhawks (4:45 p.m.)
on Jan. 24 at the
Strathmore Family

2014 which passed
very quickly. The

new card games and other activities for the Members. There is something for everyone from Pool (3
tables), Yoga, Walking and Line Dancing. There is
always room for one or two more.
Cards include Rummikube, played with cubes or
tiles instead of cards, fun. Bridge is very popular as
is Whist, Canasta and Crib. Mah Jong, the Chinese
Version is also played with tiles.
Darts has become very popular. There are 3 boards
and room for more players.
Our schedule of events can be found in the Times
under Community Calendar, with special event under Whats Happening We are very thankful to
the Times for working with us to get the news of the
Happy Gang out there for everyone.
April found us busy pricing, sorting, displaying all
the items people brought to our Garage and Bake
sale. It was so rewarding that we did it all again in
October. Thanks to our many volunteers. I think the
plan is to do it all over again this April so start saving
your best unwanted articles.
During Seniors week in June we were kept busy
with an afternoon social. The Bridge group sponsored a tournament and so did the Crib players.
Both were very successful.
Our Christmas Social was the highlight of 2014.
LaRue catered to over 90 members and guests
Rozella & Friends entertained everyone with Christmas and other lively music. Everyone had a chance
to visit with each other and meet new people. It was
