CPN Chapter 2
Interesting Concepts?
The internal process approach (pg. 68-70) a contingency effectiveness approach
that focus on internal processes and activities to assess effectiveness. I found this
very interesting because off the last job I worked at a government funded medical
boarding home this approach would have been perfect to asses our productivity.
And can quickly see how the top management fell short in many of the 7 indicators
for effectiveness. Such as a front desk manager making product decisions for the
kitchen manger without letting them now. No reward systems to managers just a
standard yearly bonus And a complete lack of communication between sections as
many times patients allergies would be found out after the fact.
Most Intriguing example?
The most intriguing example for me was on page 68 under usefulness. It stated that
mathsoft used a resource based approach to effectiveness partly by just looking at
how many top rated PhDs it can recruit and the ratio of them to employees. These
was intriguing to me because it made me wonder if this was a viable approach or
were the critics right that it ignored the environment too much. What other
companies where doing this type of approach and hence areas of business is this
approach more effective in. Also what other things did the companies that were
successful focus their approach on and why were these useful in conjunction with a
measurement of highly educated staff. And what did the once that failed, fall short
in was it do to this contingency effectiveness approach or where their other short
coming in the environment or organization.
Most thought provoking question at the end of the chapter?
Do you believe that mission statements and official goal statements provide an
organization with genuine legitimacy in the external environment? Discuss.
This was beyond a I thought provoking question for me because how to even
answer that. While technically by the book the official goal and mission statements
are supposed to state the beliefs, views, values, and reason for existence. This
should give an organization genuine legitimacy in the external environment but as
we have seen with recent examples like Loblaws outsourcing Joe apparel. Not all
parts of an organization may follow that as extensively or individuals in the
organization might not follow these mission statements. Also I am a firm believe
that in general humans beings are animals and mainly out for their own benefit, so
these statements could be orchestrated lies to give the organization a better public
standing. Further this statements could become old and out-dated and many
companies many no longer follow them to the letter if they are unable or not in their
own interests to comply any longer. So how do you answer this question with the by

humans and how they are most likely to act based on their region and industry.
