Subject objectives: to give student basic knowledge about calculation and design of structural
elements as well as to form engineering intellection applying acquired knowledge to further studies
and professional practice.
Prerequisites: Mathematics, General Physics, Engineering Graphics and Theoretical Mechanics
studies must be finished.
Learning outcomes:
Knowledge and their application
After studies students will:
get knowledge about materials, and their properties, used for structural elements;
get knowledge about strength, stability and solidity of real structural elements;
understand the reliability of structural elements and the process of elements work and
failure.
get understanding about design methods of streamlined structural elements;
get engineering intellection applying the engineering solutions of design and construction.
Special abilities
After studies students will be able to:
compose the calculation scheme according to the geometry of elements and the character of
loads;
apply appropriate calculation methods for every case;

select optimal dimensions of cross-section for elements which are effected by tension,
compression, flexure, torsion, buckling and complex deformation;
react to exchanging building laws and codes.
Social abilities
After studies students will be able to:
convey thoughts verbally or on the paper as well as to plan and organize engineering
projection and construction works;
solve individual engineering problems and use gathered information and ideas.
Personal abilities
Studies will form
the intension to learning and preparing to live in information society;
the positive opinion to intellection work and human moral perfection;
the self-reliance persons and resolution to assume responsibility for self actions and
decisions;
Assessment criteria of learning outcomes:
1. Basic knowledge of Calculus, Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry and Physics;
2. Understanding and usage of main subject definitions;
3. Acquiring the knowledge named in learning outcomes;
4. Quality of independent works and formulation of conclusions;
5. Identification of practical problems and argumentation of their solution;
6. Preparation for further studies.

Practicums
1. a) Calculation of systems of bars, which are effected by tension and compression. 3/4 hours;
b) Calculation of bars stability. 3/2 hours;
c) Calculation of geometrical properties of cross-sections. 4/5 hours.
2. a) Calculation of beam strength. 4/15 hours;
b) Calculation of built-up and composite bars. 4/4 hours.
Methods of learning: The theoretical lectures are presented using visualization (multimedia and
blackboard). Before practicums students will get ten questions from Mathematics, Geometry,
Algebra, Trigonometry and Physics. Results will give the answer: it is necessary to remind basic
school knowledge or not. During the practicums and laboratory works theoretical knowledge is
improved calculating various tasks and testing materials. Every calculation example is explaining
applying situation analysis method. After that every student gets the individual task and two weeks
to solve it. In the middle of semester students must to write an intermediate test.
Assessment methods of student learning outcomes: the structure of cumulative assessment is all
works (laboratory works and practicums), intermediate test and exam. Every type of students
independent work has different weight scores. The quality of laboratory work is evaluating and the
defense of laboratory work is performing verbally. In two weeks period perfectly accomplished
calculation works are evaluating by ten points. During the defense of laboratory and practical works
students get the questions which reveal the students skills to formulate the conclusions. During the
written exam students must to answer the questions and to solve practical exercises.
