MLK WEEK FOCUSES ON THEN

BIG RAPIDS — This year’s Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. celebration week,
“The Jim Crow Era: Then and Now,”
will allow students and community
members to reflect on the past in terms
of race relations and how those issues
remain relevant today.
Taking place from Monday through
Thursday, the week kicks off on
Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the
annual MLK Freedom March at 3 p.m.
on Monday, which begins at Ferris’
Merrill/Travis Residence Hall and ends
in the Rankin Center lobby.
Traditionally held on Sunday,
organizer and Ferris Chief Diversity
Officer David Pilgrim said holding the
event on Monday should allow more
students to be in attendance.
“We’re hoping instead of getting 100
people, we get a few hundred,” he said.
“We also want to send the message that
whether it’s the march or any other
event, the community is welcomed and
encouraged to attend.”
During the week, special activities and
presentations will be given by Ferris
faculty, including Pilgrim, who will
speak about “Stories of Activism” at 7
p.m. on Tuesday in Ferris’ IRC building
(room 120). Pilgrim’s presentation
will highlight images and stories as
they relate to the Jim Crow era and Dr.
King, speaking about activists and their
role in creating change.
Pilgrim said he hopes the presentation
will not only define what it means to be
an activist, but also challenge audience
members to be activists.
“It’s going to focus on not only what
an activist is, but what it is not,” he
said. “We want the audience to be
civil, active and relevant activists when
you’re talking about the issues they
face today.”
Other activities during the week
include the return of the Tunnel
of Oppression exhibit, which is an
interactive exhibit that highlights
issues of oppression in contemporary
society, and the presentation of “The
N*W*C* Race Show” — a theatrical and
comedic show that explores self-image,
stereotypes and hateful words, which
takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in
Williams Auditorium.
The majority of the events throughout
the week are free and open to the
public, said Michael Wade, assistant
director for Multicultural Student
Services.
Wade also stressed the term
“relevancy” in describing many of the
events being held during the week,
hoping that students and community
members will be able to apply lessons
learned from the past in current social
issues.
“You want to pinpoint certain aspects
of society and ask ‘What would Dr.
King do?’” he said. “I think we’ve done

a good job of growing this celebration
and collaborating with different people
and organizations across campus.”

Don’t Let Diabetes Wipe That
Smile From Your Face
(NewsUSA) - Diabetics know that they
need routine health care, like check-
ups and eye exams, but many might
not know that diabetes can also put a
bad taste in their mouth.
High glucose levels encourage
destructive bacteria to overcrowd the
mouth. The bacteria cause plaque
build-up and gum disease, or gingivitis.
Anyone can develop gum disease, but
diabetics often struggle to fight off
infections. Without a strong immune
response, infections advance quickly.
And gum disease, which starts off with
red, sore and bleeding gums, leads to
periodontitis, a serious infection of
the gums and the bones of the mouth.
Those who develop periodontitis often
lose their teeth.
The relationship between gum disease
and diabetes proves a two-way street
-; studies suggest that advanced gum
disease raises blood sugar, making
diabetes harder to control. As gum
disease worsens diabetes, and diabetes
worsens gum disease, patients
should strive to avoid the whole cycle
altogether.
Some products can help. For example,

Don’t Let Your Looks Blow Your
Interview

for a more business-casual look, wear
a collared shirt and a jacket. Make sure
that all clothes fit well, are clean, and
do not have loose threads or wrinkles.
And, although often overlooked,
remember it’s what is inside that
counts. While your interviewer
certainly shouldn’t see them, it
is important to choose the right
kind of underwear. According to
a recent Calvin Klein Underwear
survey that polled 600 men and 400

approximately 70 percent of those
polled admit their undergarments are
an extension of their personality. In
addition, 80 percent say a good pair
makes them feel more confident.

Healing After Weight-Loss
Surgery
