We're deep into winter's grip and it's been a quick start to
theNewYear!
I took the reins of my first Public Works and Infrastructure
Committee meeting as Chair and congestion was front and
centreontheagenda.
As I told the Toronto Sun, We simply can't afford not to
get our city moving. Read on for a recap of the first
meetingandthelatestonhowwe'recuttinggridlock.
I've also included updates on local developments, some

TakingquestionsafterthefirstPublicWorksandInfrastructureCommitteemeeting.

PublicWorks&InfrastructureCommitteeFirstMeeting
Earlierthismonth,ItookthereinsofmyfirstPublicWorksandInfrastructureCommitteemeeting
asChair.
Congestion and gridlock remain my number one priority and it was front and centre on Public
Worksagenda.
We voted to move forward with a pilot project to reduce congestion by speeding up cityled
constructionprojects.Amongotherthings,thepilotwillexploreextendingworkhours,shiftingto
overnightworkandusingincentivebasedcontracts.
We also took an advanced look at some of the congestioncutting initiatives lined up for 2015,
including the rollout of 80 additional arterial cameras, a pilot of the latest smart signal
technologyandsignalsynchronizationson12majorcorridors.
Ispearheadedtwomotionstohelpgetthecitymoving.
Thefirstasksforareportonusingportablecamerasatconstructionsites,allowingustomonitor
andrespondtoconstructionrelatedgridlockinrealtime.
Thesecondasksforareportonhowwecanbettersharetrafficrelatedinformationbetweenthe
cityskeyplayers,liketheTTCandtheTransportationServicesDivision.Ialsoaskedcitystaff
toexploreusingBigDatatounderstand,evaluateandrespondtocongestion.

library system, and I'm confident that Vickery has the strength and vision to build on its

Before taking on her new job, Vickery managed a collection of more than 10 million electronic

WasteDisposalTipsWhatGoesWhere?
Recycling(BlueBins)
Many of the products we consume come in packaging that can be recycled rather than sent to
landfills! These include beverage and food containers, home and personal product containers,
takeoutfoodcontainers,retailshoppingbagsandpaper.
Organics(GreenBins)
The benefit of properly disposing organic waste is that it can be reused as compost down the
line!Thisincludesfoodwaste,coffeegrinds,andanimalwaste.
Garbage(Black/GreyBinsorYellowBags)
Many of the items we dispose of can be reused or recycled as noted above. If, however, items
mustmaketheirwaytothelandfill,it'simportanttoknowwhat'sacceptedandwhat'snot.
HouseholdHazardousWaste
Batteries, cleaning products and paint are all examples of waste that should be disposed of
responsibly.ThecityoffersafreeservicecalledToxicTaxi,whichallowsresidentstorequesta
freepickupofhazardouswaste.Foracompletelistofwhatcountsashazardouswasteandfor
dropoffdepotlocations,pleasevisitthislink.
ElectronicWaste
As technology improves, we are constantly turning over devices and electronics. Including
everythingfromcellphonestofaxmachines,ewastecanbepartofyourcurbsidecollection.For

Icy sidewalks are a serious pedestrian safety hazard, particularly for our older neighbours and

and the request goes immediately to Transportation Services for investigation and follow
up.

closestmunicipaladdressonhandithelpspotholerepaircrewsworkefficiently.Thecityfilled
360,000potholesin2014alone!

Ifpowerisdownfollowingasnowstorm,TorontoHydrosuggestsfollowingthesetips:
Check to see if your neighbours have power. If they don't, it is likely that more work is
plannedonyourstreet.
If your home is the only house without electricity, check your electrical panel inside
yourhometoseeifthebreakersareinthe"on"position.
Checkoutsideandvisuallyinspectiftheelectricalequipmentonyourhomeisdamagedor
if the service wire is down. If the customerowned connection point (usually the pipe and
wires attached to your home connected to the powerline) is damaged, you may need to
contact an ESAcertified electrical contractor. A list is available on the ESAs website
