Five finalists advance to Regional Spelling Bee

Students in fifth through eighth grades competed Jan. 20
in the annual District Spelling Bee at Templeton Middle
School. The district is a geographical area defined by
CESA #1, which sponsors district and regional bees. Four
Hamilton School District elementary schools, Templeton
Middle School and Peace Lutheran Academy in Sussex constituted a district for the purpose of the spelling bee. Students
who won classroom spelling bees vied for the honor of participating in the district event.
The champion speller was R.J. Frerking, an eighth-grader
from Peace Lutheran Academy. Finalists who will also
advance to the regional bee were: Maayna Kashyap,
Templeton grade 7; Shiva Senthil, Templeton grade 7;

Josephine Jauquet, Templeton grade 8; and James Strasburg,

Woodside grade 5. In honor of their spelling achievement,
the top five spellers received trophies.
Regional winners continue to the Wisconsin Spelling Bee,
in hopes of qualifying for the Scripps Howard National
Spelling Bee, held in Washington, D.C.
Students who competed in the District Spelling Bee were:
Templeton Tarynn Lassiter, Amanda Tremmel, Jacob
Hubred, Elijah Wartgow, Cullen Etzel, Carter Stone, Anna
Kurhajec, Tate Hutchinson, Evan Gunderson, Shiva Senthil,
Maanya Kashyap, Benjamin Wurst, Josephine Jauquet,

Freight shipments are only for big businesses, right? WRONG! A freight
shipment doesnt have to mean a whole semi trailer of parts. A freight shipment can be anything that is too big to ship through UPS, such as large artwork, motorized vehicles, heirloom family furniture, or anything that needs
to be palletized. At The UPS Store, we can help find the best service option
to fit your shipping needs, schedule and budget. Like we can do for small
packages, we can comparison shop your large shipments to get you the
best price! Did you know freight can also be a cost effective solution if you
have a large quantity of packages all going to the same place, like a family
member moving out of state? You dont have to pay to ship each box individually. Palletize the boxes as one secure shipment and save!

Templeton students advance in

Five Templeton Middle School students will advance to regional competition of the National History Bee. Students

The students received the highest
scores on the written schoolwide

completed an online competition and
qualified to advance to the National
History Regional Bee March 21 in Buffalo
Grove, Ill. From there, the top student
advances in May to the national competition in Louisville, Ky.
Keith wins Templeton Geographic
Bee
After
nail-biting
competition,
Templeton Middle School produced its
school champion from the top ten finalists
in its Geographic Bee. Eighth-grader Jerry
Keith emerged as the 2015 school champion after rounds of intense questions, up
against nine other school finalists. The
other finalists were Jackson Buckley,
Owen Davies, Tate Hutchinson, Maja
Pechanach, Joseph Poulsen, James
Richter,
Shiva
Senthil,
Morgan
Waldenberger and Amelia Weidemann.
Hutchinson took second place.
All Templeton students participated in
a preliminary round by taking a 25-question written test. Students who scored
highest on that test advanced to the semifinal round and the ten finalists took part
in the final championship round Jan. 20.
As the school champion, Keith will
take a written test to qualify for state level
competition. Up to 100 of the top scorers
in each state will be eligible to compete
March 27 in state level National
Geographic Bee events. The winner of
each state bee will travel to Washington,
D.C., in May to participate in the national
event.

Eastman, Lehnen accept

soccer scholarships
Menomonee Falls seniors Sammy
Lehnen and Alex Eastman finalized their
plans Feb. 4 to continue their soccer
careers at the collegiate level.
Lehnen accepted a scholarship to play
at Western Illinois while Eastman accepted
a scholarship to play at UW-Milwaukee.
Feb. 4 was National Signing Day, the first
day when high school athletes could formally accept scholarships for several
sports, including football and soccer.
Afterward, Lehnen said she was first
contacted by the Western Illinois coach
after playing in a showcase event in
January 2014 with her club team, North
Shore United. The coach invited her to a
camp at Western Illinois and she got to
know some of the players on the
Leathernecks team.
It just felt right, Lehnen said.
Lehnen said she was talking with other
small schools, but the offer from Western
Illinois was the first offer she received from
an NCAA Division I school.
It all just kind of fell in to place,
Lehnen said.
She added that she plans to major in
business and accounting at the school.

Eastman said UW-Milwaukee started

recruiting after he played with his club team
in a tournament over the summer. UWMilwaukee offered a scholarships three to
four months ago.
I started looking into them for school
and it all made sense. I went with it,
Eastman said.
He added that he received attention
from some Division III school.
Eastman added that he plans to major
in a business-related field.
Scott Stein, who coaches the
Menomonee Falls boys and girls soccer
programs, said the individual honors reflect
well on the team as a whole.
It tells that we have kids who are playing at a high level. The team has been playing at a high level, but it shows a lot of
respect for the program when we have
Division I athletes like we have, Stein said.
Stein added that Lehnen and Eastman
have really proven themselves academically and on the soccer field, both of them.
He then added: Im excited for both,
theyre going to have a great career.

Safe, secure and beautiful

By Tresa Erickson
Lighting is one of the most important
features of a home, indoors and out. It provides illumination for tasks inside and
keeps burglars away outside. When chosen well, lighting can also enhance a
homes beauty. Here are some tips the
next time you change or add to your outdoor lighting.
Outdoor lighting comes in many types.
Post lights are mounted on a post, which is

usually located near the driveway. Wall

lights are mounted on walls near exterior
doorson each side of the garage door,
for example. Ceiling mount lights are
mounted on the ceiling of a porch or portico to illuminate the front entrance.
Hanging lights serve the same purpose as
ceiling mount lights but make more of a
statement in grand entrances and tall
porches.
Make a list of the outdoor lights you
need and the amount you have to spend,
and then get ready to shop. Outdoor lights
come in a variety of styles. Look for a style
that complements the style of your home.
While lanterns might work well for a
beach house, they may not suit your contemporary home. You might need a sleeker, cleaner style.
Finish is another aspect to consider.
Again, look to your house as a guide. If

you have a lot of brass, brass fixtures are

the way to go. If you have a lot of ironwork, look for black fixtures. If you have a
lot of chrome, look for chrome fixtures.
Scale is vital. Too small or too large of
lights can detract from the beauty of your
home. Look for appropriate sized lights. If
you are looking for wall lights for a twostory home, for example, you should focus
on lights that are 18 to 24 inches tall. Pay
attention to the elements in the area where
the lights will go. While you might adore
hanging lights, having one in your small
portico might not work. You dont want
guests hitting their head on the light every
time they enter or exit your home.
Want to make your home really glow?
Update the outdoor lighting. Determine
your needs and look for the right style, finish and scale to create a safe, secure,
beautiful home.

Falls Commission opposes requested land use change

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The
Menomonee
Falls
Plan
Commission voted against a proposal to
convert a residence at N88 N16954
Main Street to an orthodontist office for
the second time in three months.
Property owner Tate Boho proposed
the change, which would have required
the village to change the land use portion
of the village comprehensive plan for the
property from Medium Density Residential
to Commercial Density Residential.
The commission rejected the request
on Dec. 2 following opposition by residents at a public hearing. Boho requested
the commission reconsider its decision and
the commission decided at its Jan. 6 meeting to hold a second hearing. Village

Trustee Steve Raymonds said Boho indicated he talked with neighbors about their
concerns while two Plan Commission members werent at the first public hearing.
Resident Maureen Helm said she grew
up in the residence and now resides nearby.
It sure would be nice if you guys
would keep that home. It was almost like a
park for us, she said.
Resident Grant Lees said hestill has
the same concerns at the last time. Lees
cited a potential decline in property values for his property and a lack of privacy
from a nearby commercial development.
Lees said Boho tried to hold a meeting but
the meeting fell through.
Resident Henry Wick, speaking on
behalf of his parents, said the area was
residential while commercial development

County youth hockey team

heading to State Tournament

was across the street.

If youre selling a house, no one
wants to buy a piece of property overlooking a business, Wick said. This is a
residential area. This is where people are
going to buy homes, have families where
their kids are going to play. You dont
want a parking lot and business next door.
It just does not fit the neighborhood.
Resident John Schulz also said he had
the same concerns he had when it was first
proposed. He also noted there is a historical value to the site, as it was home to
George Hoyt, a village president. He also
raised concerns about traffic and noise
coming from the development.
We dont need to take this property
and tear it down, Schulz said.
In response to the neighbors concerns,
Boho said he purchased the property 10
years ago. In response to neighbors concerns to property value, Boho said he
researched properties in the village that
had been recently rezoned from residential to commercial and how that impacted
values of adjacent residential properties.
He compared those to residential properties in the middle of the village that were
about the same size around one-third
of an acre. Boho said that in all cases, values for all the properties have increased
between 52 and 58 percent over the past
decade.
It doesnt matter where they were,
Boho said.
Boho addressed a previous issue, that
the house may be connected to the

Underground Railroad through which

slaves escaped the south to Canada
before the Civil War. Boho noted the residence was constructed in 1869.
Its just not true, he said of that
claim.
Boho said an orthodontic dental clinic
was a low impact business and that the
new office would have the same overall
footprint as the residence. Boho said the
an orthodontist who currently has a business in the village is looking to expand
and the site is perfect for him. Boho said
an land search done by MLG could not
locate any similar properties that could
meet the needs of the orthodontist.
Boho replied to zoning concerns by
stating while there is residential property
on two sides of the site, there is commercial property across the street.
Boho added that he sought to meet
with neighbors but that no one showed up.
Commission member Tim Newman
said he doesnt believe the office would
impact nearby property value. He said he
could support the request but could not
get past the fact that the neighbors
opposed.
Commission member Tony Ash said
that once the property is switch to a commercial use, it will likely stay that way. He
added that all the properties on that side
of the street are residential.
I know it's a great location for an
orthodontics office, but there are people
living there right now that don't want it,
Ash said.

The Warhawks scored the first seven

Afterward, Assistant Coach Mark

Germantown had eight practices prior to
the Cedarburg game.
"It was a good time to clean up some

Our practices have been really, really good
and we sort of got our edge back tonight,"
Adams said.
Adams noted that by comparison,
Germantown has three games during the
next week.
"Now there will only be a couple of
practices next week, they'll be playing a lot
