1 INTRODUCTION
The Adaptive Brake Lights is a device designed to alert rear following drivers to the danger of rear-end or
chain collision. It is proven that driver reaction times are shortened by up to 0.2 seconds if a flashing red
warning signal is given instead of the conventional brake light during emergency braking. With most drivers
not fully concentrating on the road, it is easy to miss an emergency braking situation.
Adaptive Brake Lights can effectively contribute towards the prevention or reduction in rear-end or chain
collisions by means of flashing brake lights only or flashing brake lights and hazard lights. Research has
shown that at a speed of 60 km/h, the reaction time to brake is 0.6 seconds with conventional brake lights
and a similar reaction time of 0.6 seconds with manually switched ON hazard lights. With Adaptive Brake
Lights, the reaction time is significantly reduced to 0.4 seconds only.
Studies on braking signal systems documented in EC Standard TRANS-WP29-GRE-52-35e and TRANSWP29-GRE-53-02e indicates that the risk of rear-end or chain collisions are increased tremendously
whenever emergency braking action of deceleration of 6m/s or more occurs.
2 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Adaptive Brake Lights utilizes the latest Deceleration Sensing Technology to sense the deceleration force or
gravity force of the vehicle whenever the brakes are applied. The system has the ability to analyze whether
soft braking or heavy braking is intended by the driver. If the deceleration force is confirmed to be greater
than -6m/s or gravity force of 0.6G, the system will trigger the flashing brake lights. When the force is
confirmed to be greater than -8.5m/s or 0.85G, the system will trigger the flashing of brake lights and
hazard lights together at different frequencies to clearly alert the rear following driver. This will drastically
assist in increasing driver response time in such sudden-braking situations, especially during high speed
driving on expressways.
3 FUNCTION AND FEATURES
In the event of emergency braking, the brake lights and hazard lights will be automatically activated to flash
in order to provide a visual warning for the rear following driver. This system has 3 levels of visual warning
as seen in the table below. The severity of the initial deceleration is determined by the Adaptive Brake
Lights software. For all levels, the Brake Lights will flash at 4Hz. Additionally, if the deceleration exceeds 8.5m/s, the Hazard Lights will flash at 2.5Hz. When the deceleration drops below -5m/s, the flashing lights
will continue for a pre-determined duration according to the initial level of deceleration. Thus, the flashing
method and duration will inform the rear following driver of the severity of the emergency braking.

7.5 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
During normal conditions, the stop relay is normally closed. When the brake switch is closed (by
stepping on the brake pedal), the brake lights will turn ON. The brake system functionality is
unaffected by the Adaptive Brake Lights. The hazard relay is normally open and will not activate the
hazard lights or the brake lights depending on which product model is used.
In an emergency braking situation, the brake switch is closed and power is supplied to the Module
which then detects the motion of deceleration force. After analysis of the deceleration force, the Module
will activate the brake relay. The brake relay connection for the brake lights will open and the brake
lights will turn OFF. The brake relay will close back after 0.25 seconds and the brake lights will turn
ON. This results in the brake lights flashing at a frequency of 4Hz.
When the Module detects a heavy deceleration force (> -8.5m/s or 0.85G), the hazard relay will activate.
The hazard relay connection for the hazard lights will close and the hazard lights will turn ON. The
hazard relay will open after 0.4 seconds and the hazard lights will turn OFF. This results in the
hazard lights flashing at a frequency of 2.5Hz. The TE300E rear hazard only flashing frequency is same
as brake lights 4Hz.
For vehicles with brake lights current sensing, individual brake relays for each of the brake light bulbs
are required. This is to avoid the current sensing system triggering the bulb malfunction warning on the
dashboard. The brake relay functions the same as above. When the Adaptive Brake Lights is activated,
the bulb malfunction warning may show on the dashboard, and will disappear when the brake light
flashing stops.
Wire E10 requires connection to a cable that is directly from the battery for high current supply to hazard
lights.

INSTALLATION GUIDE

Caution: !
The wire harness installation and joining should be 6 to 12 away from the Brake Light and Hazard Light
to ensure that the ABS and/or Current Sensing circuit is not bypassed (if the vehicle is equipped with ABS
and/or Current Sensing).

The Adaptive Brake Lights Control Module should be installed nearest to the Brake and Hazard Light either
on a horizontal or vertical position only (Figure A). The direction of placing the Control Module must be
facing the front of the vehicle with the arrow pointing forward (Figure A). Do not secure the Control
Module until the position is verified by completing the Testing Guide (No. 9).

9 TESTING GUIDE
After completing the Adaptive Brake Lights installation, it is essential to conduct some tests to verify the
installation is correct and the system is functioning properly.
9.1. The brake lights and hazard lights should not be ON.
9.2. Press on the brake pedal to verify the brake lights are ON.
9.3. Place the Adaptive Brake Lights Control Module on a horizontal or vertical level and position the
control module at either 0, 90or 180 (Figure A) until the Y Level LED Light is ON (Figure C).
9.4. Switch ON the hazard lights to verify that the hazard lights are flashing.
9.5. Press on the brake pedal and manually turn down the Adaptive Brake Lights Control Module to the
forward position to 90, both the brake and hazard lights should flash simultaneously. (Figure B).

TRIGGER CONDITIONS
2.1 Start Trigger Condition:
2.1.1 The Adaptive Brake Lights would automatically start triggering the brake relay to flash the
brake lights during a braking action that causes a deceleration of -6m/s2 or more.
2.1.2 When the braking action causes a deceleration of -8.5m/s2, both the brake lights and hazard
lights will flash in tandem.
2.2 Stop Trigger Condition:
2.2.1 The Adaptive Brake Lights would stop triggering the relays to flash the brake lights and
hazard lights when the deceleration drops below -5m/s2.
2.2.2 When the deceleration is drops below -5m/s, the system will continue to flash the brake
lights or brake and hazard lights in accordance to the additional flashing duration listed below
for effective driver warning. After this duration, the Adaptive Brake Lights would stop
triggering the relays to flash the brake lights and hazard lights.
