OCEANPORT The borough police department was
threatened with eviction by the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority, a councilman said,
forcing the borough to agree to a lease it feels could
make taxpayers vulnerable.
It was kind of like putting the gun to your head and
saying Take it or leave it, said Councilman Joseph
Irace.
Ever since superstorm Sandy damaged its former
Monmouth Boulevard headquarters in 2012, the police
were operating in trailers while they searched for a
new home.
Last summer, the borough spent in excess of
$100,000 to prepare a former firehouse located on Fort
Monmouth property for use by the police department,
according to Mayor Michael Mahon. In October, the police department moved in.
However, the borough and the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority the entity tasked by
the state to oversee redevelopment at the former U.S.
Army base had not yet worked out the terms of the
