OCEANPORT The borough police department was
threatened with eviction by the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority, a councilman said,
forcing the borough to agree to a lease it feels could
make taxpayers vulnerable.
It was kind of like putting the gun to your head and
saying Take it or leave it, said Councilman Joseph
Irace.
Ever since superstorm Sandy damaged its former
Monmouth Boulevard headquarters in 2012, the police
were operating in trailers while they searched for a
new home.
Last summer, the borough spent in excess of
$100,000 to prepare a former firehouse located on Fort
Monmouth property for use by the police department,
according to Mayor Michael Mahon. In October, the police department moved in.
However, the borough and the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority the entity tasked by
the state to oversee redevelopment at the former U.S.
Army base had not yet worked out the terms of the

DEATH AND TAXES

New Jersey is one of only two states
with both an estate tax, on the assets of
the person who died, and an inheritance tax, charged to some people who
are bequeathed money or assets. Moreover, of the states with an estate tax,
New Jersey exempts the fewest from
having to pay.

Are you considering leaving New Jersey
because of the states estate and inheritance taxes? Would you consider
staying if the state were to do away
with the estate tax or, otherwise,

TRENTON No state in the nation levies taxes when people die
as aggressively as New Jersey.
Most states charge nothing. New Jersey is one of only two
states with both an estate tax, on the assets of the person who
died, and an inheritance tax, charged to some people who are bequeathed money or assets. Moreover, of the states with an estate
tax, New Jersey exempts the fewest from having to pay.
That could change.
State lawmakers are pitching more than a half-dozen proposals to repeal, phase out or exempt more estates from the taxes,
and its conceivable such a move will be pursued in coming
months in conjunction with a possible hike in gasoline taxes.
Sen. Steven Oroho, R-Sussex, a certified financial planner, has
been advocating for change for years.
It actually chases income out of the state of New Jersey, Oroho said. Quite frankly, people know right away, financial planners and estate attorneys, they almost feel like they have a duty to
tell their clients: Heres what it costs in New Jersey, and heres
what it costs elsewhere.
Oroho says IRS statistics that track when tax filers move from
