Ladies and gentlemen,


dear business friends,
Fortunately, the upturn in the crane business which started in the second half of 2010
has seamlessly continued into 2011. We are all glad we can look into the future with
cautious optimism.
In addition to new products and exciting projects, a highlight of 2011 will be various
trade fairs; we are particularly looking forward to CeMAT in May, where crane builders
and customers from all over the world will come together.
Once again in this edition, you can read project and user reports - for example, on eight
special cranes for the new Three Gorges Dam in China, or special uses for slewing cranes
at Frankfurt airport and in New Guinea. Besides, we report on boat cranes which play
a particularly starring role.
This edition is completed by progress reports on crane servicing and on a technically
demanding load turning device.

Frankfurt International Airport: Who wouldnt look forward to


this view each day? The tower gives you wanderlust, you can
almost touch the jets of the major airlines, and you long for your
next holiday.

nfortunately, the VETTER slewing crane


cannot share this tingling sense of anticipation - the MEISTER crane type is after
all used only for prosaic maintenance and repair
purposes on air-conditioning and ventilation
equipment in a building of the recently renovated Gate B West in Terminal 1. For this purpose,
the crane is of course equipped for outdoor use.
Safe transport in the strongest wind
The statics design was developed on the basis
of the location, exposed to wind force 7 on the
Beaufort scale. Under these conditions, it is essential to lock the jib when in the rest position.
The crane itself has a lifting capacity of 250 kg

Cranes for the rain forest


In Equatorial Guinea, the Mongomeyen International Airport was completed early in 2010. The airport in the Wele-Nzas province is located in
the middle of the jungle, and close to the place of origin of President
Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled the country since 1979.
Through the DYWIDAG construction company, VETTER delivered a PROFI
system P500 Olympia crane with a lifting capacity of 2 tons, in addition
to two column-mounted slewing jib cranes. The photo shows a MEISTER
type slewing crane with a 500 kg lifting capacity. DYWIDAG undertook
the assembly and commissioning of all crane equipment.

at a jib length of 7,000 mm, and an exceptional


load of 1,000 kg at up to 2,000 mm jib length.
For measuring these loads, the hoist is equipped
with load measurement equipment and an automatic shut-off mechanism.
The electric chain hoist provides a lifting height
of 19 m, thus allowing replacement parts and
components to be lifted directly onto the building roof.

Thanks to a new ROTOMAX load turning device, the Fronberg Guss
company of Schwandorf in the Upper Palatinate was able to considerably
simplify its handling of heavy moulding boxes.

eavy moulding boxes with a deadweight of up to 50 tons - it is hardly


imaginable that such monsters can
be rotated once around their own axis while
hanging freely. Jrgen Rath, production manager at Fronberg Guss, is also appropriately
impressed. Special endless chains are used
for the rotating process using the ROTOMAX
load turning device. These are equipped with
a driving dog which engages with a trunnion
on the moulding boxes, and thereby prevents
the chains from slipping through.

Stronger chains for higher load


However, the ROTOMAX load turning device
is not only used for turning moulding boxes,
but also for lifting considerably heavier loads:
The device can lift up to 80 tons in its function
as a lifting beam. For this purpose, different
chains are used.
Simplified working process and increased
safety
The drive wheel distance of the ROTOMAX
load turning devices is adjustable between

2,500 and 7,200 mm, so that boxes of different


sizes can be handled.
The loads centre of gravity is automatically
compensated by parallel travel of the drive
units, so that the load is balanced at all times.
A member of staff uses a remote control to
navigate the impressive process at a safe
distance.

the working process and safety at work

Especially challenging requirements demand special equipment and
reliable partners. This is also true at the second largest hydroelectric power
station, at Xiluodu in south western China.

ETTER Krantechnik GmbH is supplying a


total of eight cranes, each with a lifting
capacity of 2,500 kg for this fascinating
construction project early in 2011. They are required for the installation of a gas-insulated
power transmission line, and are installed in
buildings on the side of the mountain slopes of
the dam.
Sensors control automatically
The distinctive feature: The partially automated
cranes simplify the work for the fitters at a depth
of 280 m by lowering the load down a shaft by
means of a wire rope hoist. So that the 9 mm
thick wire is permanently centred in the shaft
as it runs off the 2 m length drum, the VETTER
engineers developed a special lateral hook compensation system which automatically controls
the further movement of the hoist.

The crane is navigated by a radio-control


specially designed for the purpose. It reliably
transmits the radio signal in spite of multiple
intermediate landings in the shaft, and thereby
guarantees a failure-free operation of the crane.
Wire rope hoists with superlatives
At Haiger-Kalteiche works, acceptance of the
cranes is currently taking place. And already the
giant wire rope hoists are creating a furore. The
idea of a 280 m wire with a dead weight of about
1,000 kg leaves no-one unimpressed.

Proponents and opponents


The Xiluodu Dam is intended to help preventing
the silting up of the reservoir for the Three Gorges
Project. The dams other intended purposes are
irrigation, navigability, and flood protection. All
that sounds fascinating, but is not without controversy: In January 2005 the project was temporarily
stopped because its environmental sustainability
had been insufficiently tested. The projects opponents criticised the fact that the reservoir would
submerge some of the worlds most spectacular
canyons and gorges.

Action!
In December 2010 and January 2011, VETTER yachting cranes appeared in the German
Kstenwache (Coastguard) TV series. In two episodes close to each other, our MAAT
type cranes could be seen in the TV crime series.

out because of their elegant design,
which blends well with the maritime
appearance of a marina. With lifting capacities each of 20,000 kg and heights of about
12 m, the cranes are indispensable assistants
in the Neustadt/Holstein and Groenbrode
marinas, and this is what earned them the
roles of extras in the TV programme.
The distinctive technical feature of the
cranes is the so-called top jib, which is
mounted on top of the crane and is used for
stepping masts.

Customer and crane now famous beyond


our borders
Around 5 million viewers watch the early evening
series which has been transmitted on the ZDF
channel since 1997. In episode 213, A deadly
game, everything revolves around our customer, the Klemens boatyard in Groenbrode.
The actors in the series have for this reason also
taken the name Klemens. Filming took place
in and around the boatyards facilities. Because Kstenwache is also a success outside
Germany the series was shown in countries
including the Czech Republic, Russia, Italy,
Latvia, and Hungary - our customers and the two
VETTER boat cranes have also become known
beyond our borders.

Legal requirements

The operator bears the


responsibility
The legislator assigns the responsibility for the correct and
safe state of cranes and hoists to the operating company.
The operator is obliged to provide his staff with safe working equipment,
and to maintain its safe state. For this, a German operator must comply with the following
regulations in particular:
l The Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) as the national
implementation of the European Use of Work Equipment Directive 2009/104/EC,
which is made concrete through the Technical Rules for Workplace Safety (TRBS).
l The accident prevention regulations, principles and rules of the trades
organisations (BGVs) (in particular here BGV D6 for cranes, BGV D8 for winches,
lifting and pulling equipment, BGG 905 testing of cranes, and BGR 500 2.8
operation of working equipment load suspension devices for raising loads),
which are furthermore valid as statutory law.
