aroundthetimeperiodwaswildlyinaccurate.Additionally,itshowsthattheCIAwas
extremelynaiveintheaftermathofvictory,neglectingtofollowtheShahs
governmentcloselyortheoppressiveregimethathebeganwiththecreationofSAVAK.

Thissource,whichiswritteninArabic,wasusefulindetermininghowIranwasduring

appreciatethelegacythattheycouldbeleaving,andthefullextentoftheirmistakes,as

Thismemorandumwasoneofthefirstdocumentsfromtheplanningprocessofoperation
FUBELT,whichisbetterknownastheChileancoup.Thememorandumoutlineswith
urgencytheneedforaChileanleaderotherthanSalvadorAllende,whoposeda
Communistthreattothecountry,andthreatenedthepolicyofcontainment.The
memorandumwastakenfromtheNationalSecurityArchive,sponsoredbyGeorge
WashingtonUniversity,makingitaveryreliableprimarydocument.Itwasvery
beneficialtoourlegacyargumentinthatitoutlinedanaspectofAmericanforeignpolicy
duringthecoldwar,andwasaverygoodexampleoftheUnitedStatesoverthrowinga
democraticallyelectedleader,andreplacingtheleaderwithsomeoneelseinacoup.

ItalsocalledforthereorganizationoftheCIA'sstructure,andnotedcertainsecurity
lapses.GiventheextremelysecretivenatureoftheCIAandtheextremelackofavailable

upofthecoup.Whentheinterviewerdescribestheamountofdocumentsstillclassified

blatantlie,andtheinterviewercontinuestovoicehisskepticism,onlytobemetby

consideration.Thisisinterestingbecauseatthistime,hewasawarethattheDulles
brotherswantedtooverthrowMossadeq.Thisbehaviorwas,frankly,blatantlydishonest

relevantspecificinformation.Fromthissource,Iwouldsayitsstrongestpointisthe
