INFLUENCE LINE DIAGRAM OF A CONTINUOUS TWO SPAN BEAM

Object of experiment: To determine the support reaction of an indeterminate beam using

Muller Breslau Principle using IRC loading (70R wheeled, AA-tracked)

Apparatus Used: Drawing Board, Drawing Sheet, Steel Scale (Beam) Scale, pencil, eraser,
Nails, board pins etc.
.

Theory:
An influence line gives the value of a quantity in a specific point as a function of the location of
a moving unit load. In order to determine ILD for a two span beam we use The Mller-Breslau
principle
Muller Breslau principle states that:
The influence line for a force (or moment) response function is given by the deflected
shape of the released structure by removing the displacement constraint corresponding to the
response function of interest from the original structure and giving a unit displacement (or
rotation) at the location and in the direction of the response function.

Experimental Procedure:
Procedure for constructing influence lines for indeterminate beam :
(1) the restraint of the desired support is removed from the beam(Steel scale) for which ILD is
to be drawn
(2) displacement is applied to the released beam (considering it as unity) at the release in the
desired reaction, and
(3) the deflected shape of the released beam is drawn consistent with all remaining support
and continuity conditions.
(4) Inorder to find the Reaction from corresponding ILD :
The IRC loading is placed over the beam at different position, and get the ordinates under
the load multiply with respective wheeled load to get the respective reaction.

CONCLUSION:
Influence lines will be used to find the most unfavourable position of the load for a certain
quantity in statically determinate and statically indeterminate systems. Quantities of interest could be:
- a support reaction
- a rotation in a certain point
- an internal moment in a certain cross-section
- a deflection in a specific point
- a shear force in a specific cross-section
Here we have found out the maximum support reaction for two different IRC loading conditions
of a two span beam.
