In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In many ways my media product relates to the conventions of a real media
product as during the production of this media product I faced many
challeges and tried to develop the different ways of looking at a magazine
as I was looking at music magazines; it depends of what genre I was
looking at as that is what matters the most when the production of each
step starts, this is because this relates to the mise-en-scene which creates
a magazine. Looking at different differen genres at first, the most that
intrigued me was the genre rock and roll- it is the most well deveoped and
challeged for me as a person relating looking at the genre rock as I would
enjoy this type of music which means that deveoping the media product
would not be too difficult however there were some challemges made in
the process of my front cover, content page and double page spread for
my rock and music magazine.
Firstly, looking at the my front cover for my magazine and contrasting the
conventions of a real media product my magazine development would
show may simliarities. This is because when I produced my front cover
magazine I looked at many different front cover magazines relation to rock
and roll such as NME, Mojo and Rock Sound in particular as in my opinion
this would anchor rock and roll the most to me. Therefore I tried to make
my media prodcut look more realisic by looking at these magazines.
Looking below is my music magazine which I prouduced.

However, when I produced this music

magazine, to make it look more realistic I
had looked at a variety of real media
products, which have been already been
published, therefore this allowed me to
develop my own idea to produce a similar
magazine with the right ideas and concept
of making it look real; following the
conventions of a real media product. The
front covers below are the images I used for
inspiration for my own:

Therefore
I have
produced
my front
cover
magazine
on

Photoshop to make it look

professional and this would allow my me to follow the codes and
conventions of the music magazine, by allowing me to maintain a high
standard of using this software; The codes and conventions I have
followed on my music magazine for the front cover are Puff WIN is a
very effective puff word for magazine as it makes my music magazine
stand out but also engages the buyers attention due to it being very
attractive and it will make the readers want to see what is revealed inside,
therefore they can find out how to WIN, it is a very good technique. Also
I have looked at different front covers which allowed me to develop my
ideas for my own which I have used a model for my magazine to pose with
his hands crossed as this anchors attitude which reflects the genre of rock
and roll. The masthead also reflects the genre as RMUSiC stands for Rock
Music, therefore this reflects the genre and the colour scheme does too as
red, white and black anchors rock therefore this what portrays the
magazine to be seen as rock magazine and follows the codes and
conventions of a rock music magazine, which I had used from variety of
rock music magazines as shown, it also shows that I have used 2-4 colours
on my front cover which is needed. Using a strapline is a very effective
way of using different techniques as I have used yellow and black which
makes it stand out however, by using buzzwords in my magazinePosters, Guitar Tips, and Gig Guid will always attracts the reader as
this makes my music magazine unique compared to another magazine as
this will make it unique by including different things which other
magazines do not hold which are free. Furthermore the different
typography I have used such as the masthead makes the magazine unique
and creates a brand for the magazine and by following the conventions of
a music magazine I have applied the issue number with a bar code and
with a date, which shows the right price for the magazine however this will
apply to all magazines. In addition my media product doe not differ much
from a real magazine of the conventions as it also had the positioning
statement- THE PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE OF MUSIC, this portrays the
type of magazine it is and is under the masthead and lastly, it contains
coverlines which outline frames the image but my main coverline
anchorage to the text which relates to the central image.
In contrast my magazine differs from a real media product relating to the
front cover by; not containing small images which some front cover
magazines have, extra information to tell the reader what contains inside
the magazine, but this is the only difference of my media product

compared to a real media product, but this matters of the different

perspectives of genres of magazines.
Secondly, my media product relating to a content page and use used of
following the codes and conventions of content page to produce a realistic
looking media
product will be
shown below:

When I had
media product
page I had
the codes and
a real media
therefore I had looked at the magazine Mojo as this
to the most due to the layout of this

produced my
of a content
tried to follow
conventions of
product
has stood out

Therefore on my content page I have separated the articles into Regular,

Review and Features, which are subtitles- so this will help the readers
when they will read it but also this will break up all the writing up relating
to making the magazine clear into sections when it is read however to
make it more easier to read in sections I have changed the colours of the
sections into read therefore this makes it similar to a real media product,
however as well as this being related to the conventions of the genre. Also
I have added page number onto my contents page, which follow the codes
and conventions of a contents page but this also helps the reader as it
allows them to know what is contained inside the magazine. Further to
make my magazine direct to the buyers as most magazine content pages I
have applied CONTENT so it will make it easier for the buyers to
understand and a wide variety of images are used on my content page to
not only reflect my genre but also to add a little insight towards what is
contained in the magazine of the articles. My images are very relevant to
what type music is included, it reflects the magazine genre I have used, as
the mise-en-scene also reflect the genre which is rock; for example using
props such as wearing colours such as red, using an electric guitar which
anchors rock too and many more. I have used 7 images in total, which
signifies the conventions of a content page of real media product.

On my double page spread I have

made sure it similar to a real media product (I have used a real media
product to compare my production of my own double page spread media
production) therefore following the codes and conventions of a double
page spread I followed I created my own. Therefore I have applied a page
number with logo of the name of the magazine RMUSiC on the bottom of
my magazine to reinforce the buyers. The way my image bleeds slightly
onto the other page is to connect the information of the article, but the
mise-en-scene should set the tone of the article which my magazine
follows on the conventions as it portrays it is about the person on the
image of the article which will reflect him as it is an interview. Also it is in
columns as this will make it easier for the readers to read (2/3 columns)
however, my first paragraph has a drop cap which does differ from this
example but many other double page spreads do contain it as it follows
the conventions of a real media product. It has a plain colour scheme
which reflects the genre of my magazine as red, black and white anchors
rock and roll so that is why I have chosen these colours, but its also
reflects Harry Strachan (who I interviewed) of what music he plays. By
using quotes this will allow the magazine to be looked at closely as the
drop quotes are very important information therefore this will capture the
audience so this is why I have followed the conventions and applied in
onto my own to create the real media product look. Moreover the way I
have used the size font of 11 allows me to fit more information for the
readers and also I have added a byline which tell buyers who the article is
by and the images. However I have also applied onto double page spread
a stand first as this gives the readers a summary of what the article is
about therefore it can save time for many people or on the other hand
engage to some who want to find out more of what is going on the article
so it very simple and bold; which I made mine black and bold. In contrast
some headlines bleed into the other page but mines does not as I wanted
it to stand out the most therefore I have used two different colours which
also reflect the genre, black and red but I changed the size of them too
which in my opinion will make it more simple of what the article is about.
