1.

If equipped, remove the vent tube.

2.

Using the special tools, remove torque converter.

3.

Using the special tool, mount the transmission to the bench.

4.

NOTE:
If the transmission fluid pan gasket is not damaged, it can be reused.
Remove the transmission fluid pan bolts, transmission fluid pan and gasket.

Clean the transmission fluid pan and pan magnet.

6.

NOTICE:
If installing a new transmission fluid filter and the grommet remains in the main control bore, carefully use a small screwdriver to remove
the grommet. Use care not to damage the main control bore.
NOTE:
If the transmission is being repaired for a contamination-related failure, use a new transmission fluid filter and seal. The transmission fluid filter can
be reused if no excessive contamination is present.
Remove the transmission fluid filter and grommet.

7.

NOTICE:
Do not pull on the plastic lead frame. This may cause damage to the connector ends. Carefully pry up on the locking tabs to disconnect the
solenoids. Disconnect the molded lead frame from the solenoids.
Disconnect the molded lead frame from the solenoids.

Disconnect the shift solenoid SSA and SSB.

Disconnect the torque converter clutch (TCC).

Disconnect the electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid.

Disconnect the bulkhead inter-connector.

Remove the speed sensors.

Remove the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor bolt.

Remove the OSS sensor.

Remove the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor bolt.

Remove the TSS sensor bracket and sensor.

NOTICE:
Discard the outer manual control lever shaft nut. Do not reuse. The old nut will not retain the torque specification.
Remove the outer manual control lever.

Remove the outer manual control lever.

Remove the digital transmission range (TR) sensor.

Remove the digital TR sensor bolts.

Remove the digital TR sensor.

Remove the manual control valve detent lever spring.

12.

Remove the 24 main control valve body bolts, the main control valve body and the EPC solenoid bracket.

13.

Remove and discard the pump outlet screen.

NOTE:
Use a shop cloth to protect the transmission case surface.
Remove the manual control lever shaft retaining pin.

15.

Remove the manual control lever shaft inner nut.

16.

Slide the manual control lever shaft out of the case while removing the inner nut.

Remove the parking lever actuating rod.

Remove the manual valve detent.

Remove the parking lever actuating rod.

NOTICE:
Use care not to damage the manual control lever shaft bore. If the bore is damaged the new seal may leak.
Remove the manual control lever shaft seal.

Remove the EPC solenoid.

19.

Remove the 2-3 accumulator spring retainer.

20.

Remove the 2-3 accumulator piston.

Remove the 2-3 accumulator piston.

Using the special tool, remove the reverse band servo retaining ring.

Remove the reverse band servo.

23.

Remove the reverse band servo cover.

Remove the reverse band servo piston and rod assembly.

Remove the reverse band servo spring.

NOTICE:
If the tool is not available, extreme care must be taken. Spring pressure will force the overdrive servo piston assembly out of the case. Case
bore damage may result from trying to pry on the internal retaining ring.
Using the special tool, compress the piston spring, then remove the overdrive servo piston retainer.

Remove the overdrive servo piston.

Remove the overdrive servo piston.

Remove the overdrive servo piston return spring.

Compress the 1-2 accumulator cover and remove the 1-2 accumulator piston retaining ring.

Remove the 1-2 accumulator upper spring.

Remove the 1-2 accumulator spring cover.

Remove the inner and outer 1-2 accumulator springs.

Remove the 1-2 accumulator.

Remove the 1-2 accumulator upper spring.

Using the special tools, remove the extension housing seal.

NOTE:
Rear wheel drive (RWD) extension housing shown, four wheel drive (4WD) extension housing similar.
NOTE:
These bolts have been coated with a sealant. High break torque may be required to remove these bolts.
Remove the extension housing.

Remove the 4 bolts and 2 nuts.

Remove the extension housing and the extension housing gasket.

Remove the parking pawl.

Remove the parking pawl shaft.

Remove the parking pawl return spring.

Remove the parking pawl.

Rotate the transmission to the vertical position with the output shaft toward the floor.

31.

NOTICE:
Extreme care must be taken during transmission connector removal. Do not pull on wires or use a hammer on the connector body.
Place a screwdriver on the flat portion of the connector and push the connector out through the bottom of the case.

Using the special tools, remove the front pump seal.

33.

NOTE:
These bolts have been coated with sealant. High break torque may be required to remove the bolts.
Remove the front bolts.

Using the special tools, remove the front pump support.

35.

Remove and discard the pump gasket.

36.

NOTE:
For assembly, note the location of the check ball and the intermediate clutch piston return spring pack indent during disassembly.
Remove the intermediate clutch piston return spring pack.

37.

If equipped, remove the intermediate clutch anti-rattle clip.

38.

NOTICE:
Remove the assembly carefully to prevent damage to the overdrive band friction material by the reverse clutch drive lugs.

Remove the following components as an assembly:

Intermediate clutch pack

Intermediate one-way clutch

Reverse clutch

Forward clutch assembly

Disengage and remove the overdrive band.

40.

Remove the forward clutch hub and the No. 3 forward clutch hub front bearing.

Remove the intermediate stub shaft.

Align the reverse sun shell with the overdrive band anchor pin for removal.

43.

Remove the following components as an assembly:

Forward clutch sun gear

No. 5 forward clutch sun gear bearing

Reverse clutch sun gear

No. 4 forward clutch hub bearing

Remove the center support retaining ring and note location for assembly.

Remove the case-to-planet support spring.

46.

Remove the planetary gear support and planetary as an assembly.

47.

Remove the reverse clutch band.

48.

Remove the retaining ring.

49.

Remove the direct clutch pack.

Remove the No. 8 bearing.

51.

Remove the output shaft and output shaft ring gear assembly.

52.

Remove the No. 9 case rear bearing.

53.

Inspect and if necessary, using the special tools, remove the rear case bushing.
