War
1. Why do people still wage wars when we have a long history that shows us how terrible they
are and how much suffering they produce? Wont we ever learn this lesson?
The answer is a bit more complicated. People go to war most of the times because of a
profound failure to communicate: see religious wars or wars for ethnic cleansing. We still
dont know how to accept and respect one another, even with all the differences. And some
important causes of wars nowadays are poverty and greed. Some people are too poor and fight
for food and a chance for life, and others never have enough and want more.
Modern weapons.
As technology advanced, so did the weapons become more sophisticated. The evolution of
science not only brought good things, but also better and more proficient ways to kill one
another.
It is true that modern military technology focuses on developing precise weapons that target
only military compounds, such as GPS-guided missiles, strike fighter jets, nuclear-powered
aircraft carriers etc.
However, one of the most deadly modern means of killing is represented by the weapons of
mass destruction, which are a target of the War on Terrorism.
Ongoing nuclear threat.
Out of all weapons that mankind has devised so far, the nuclear bomb is by far the most
destructive. Although it was only used twice, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world witnessed
the scope of its destruction. Since then, the nuclear bombs were improved, and now, we hold
the nuclear power to destroy planet Earth many times over.
Countries like Iran and North Korea pose an ongoing nuclear threat to the world. To
counteract this, the majority of countries have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,
which limits the spread of nuclear weapons.
