Third Edition ADRs Applicability Summary

Trailers
1.

This Table shows:


a.
the national standards (Australian Design Rules) currently in force for new model vehicles
and the vehicle categories to which they are applicable, as at the date this Applicability
Summary is published (see footer and note *);
b.
the dates on which new national standards will come into force and the vehicle categories
to which they will be applicable (light green highlighted);
c.
earlier revisions of the national standards that may be accepted as equivalent to the
standards in force for new model vehicles (refer to each relevant standards list of
acceptable prior rules); and
d.
the national standards that have been superseded by other standards (light yellow
highlighted) or withdrawn with no direct replacement (light red highlighted).

ADR notation:
ADR X/00 indicates the original version of ADR X
ADR X/01 indicates the first revised version of a standard where the amendment increases in
stringency, includes additional vehicle categories, or changes content significantly. ADR X/02 is
the second revision, and so on.
ADR X/, the ellipsis indicates the latest version.

Codes for vehicle categories and definitions are in Definitions and Vehicle Categories and can be
found on web page: <http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/adr_online.aspx>
(The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Vehicle Category Codes are
also shown in brackets in the Table.)
TA - VERY LIGHT TRAILER - A single-axle trailer with a Gross Trailer Mass (GVM) not
exceeding 0.75 tonne.
TB - LIGHT TRAILER - A trailer with a Gross Trailer Mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes, other than
a trailer of Category TA.
TC - MEDIUM TRAILER - A trailer with a Gross Trailer Mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not
exceeding 10 tonnes.
TD - HEAVY TRAILER - A trailer with a Gross Trailer Mass exceeding 10 tonnes.
The table is for guidance only. Users must refer to the relevant standard for the
circumstances under which the standard is mandatory, optional or prohibited.

6. Trailers with an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) not exceeding 4.5 tonne may be constructed to
meet Vehicle Standards Bulletin (VSB) number 1. Trailers built to meet the requirements in this
bulletin are accepted as meeting the relevant ADRs.

In addition to the above national standards, Australian Design Rule Harmonisation,


facilitates the automatic acceptance of the latest version of UNECE regulations that have
been adopted as alternative standards within the ADRs and have been applied by
Australia under the UNECE 1958 Agreement. Refer
