WLL-Series

A Cable-Free Approach
to Shooting Live Events.

Whether gathering news in the field or covering sports,

concerts and other live events, camera crews know that mobility
is essential to securing the very best results. The Sony wireless
camera system delivers the ideal solution, providing the extra
mobility needed to cover such events with effortless efficiency.
Using COFDM transmission and powerful error-correction
technologies, this add-on system offers robust wireless
transmission between a compatible Sony camera/camcorder
and a compact receiver. The use of a 2.4 GHz band transmission
frequency allows a license-free wireless camera system to be
easily established. In addition to video and audio for the
acquisition device, this system also offers the transmission of
camera control, intercom and tally signals*. These features
enable highly mobile yet creative shooting opportunities.
With its secure transmission and operational flexibility, the
Sony wireless camera system opens the door to new
possibilities in news and live events.
* An optional WRR series wireless microphone tuner and a WRT series wireless microphone
transmitter are required. These features are only available using the WLL-CA55 and
WLL-RX55 combination.

Wireless system components

WLL-CA55
Wireless Camera Transmitter

WLL-CA50
Wireless Camera Transmitter

The WLL-CA55 is a wireless

camera transmitter that converts
the cameras video/audio signal
into an MPEG-2 bit-stream for
transmission over the 2.4 GHz
frequency band. The WLL-CA55 is
compatible with Sony portable
cameras such as the BVP-E10P/
E10WSP and BVP-950P.

The WLL-CA50 is also a wireless

camera transmitter. This compact
model is compatible with most
Sony
camcorders,
including
Digital Betacam, Betacam SX,
MPEG IMX and XDCAM
camcorders.

Versatile Antenna Unit

WLL-RX55
Wireless Camera Receiver
The WLL-RX55 is a wireless camera
receiver that consists of two tuners
for diversity reception, a diversity
switcher, and an MPEG-2 decoder,
all packed into a compact unit. The
half-rack width, 3U-high design

enables the WLL-RX55 to be

installed into limited rack spaces
such as in OB vans. By attaching
the RM-B750 Remote Control
Unit on the front panel of the
WLL-RX55, this receiver also serves

as a wireless camera control unit.

Alternatively, the camera can
be controlled from a standard
RCP-700 series Remote Control
Panel.

Applications
Live Sports Events
During live sporting events, you need to be as mobile and flexible as
possible. You need to catch every close-up, both during play and in
post-game interviews with the star players. With the extra mobility that
the Sony wireless camera system affords, you're free to move about
without cable concerns, so you can catch all those important
moments efficiently and effectively.

ENG
If youve ever encountered a barrier, such as a fence or railroad tracks,
when covering live news events, you know the difficulty of being first
to air with a story in the field. With the flexible wireless camera system,
you can get to the action and provide live coverage to your news team
by transmitting high quality MPEG-2 video and audio to the news van.

WLL-RX55

WLL-RX55 with optional RM-B750 remote control unit

Features
High-Quality Transmission
The Sony wireless camera system enables
you to take advantage of real-time MPEG-2
broadcast picture quality and MPEG-1 Layer
I/II 48 kHz audio. The system is compatible
with either 525/60 or 625/50 video formats,
with menu selection of the appropriate format.

Stable Transmission

sends each sub-signal over a separate subcarrier frequency. The WLL-CA55/CA50

specifically uses 1705 subcarriers and
sends the data in small portions. When
compared to using just one carrier signal,
COFDM transmission is less susceptible to
multipath errors, which occur when subcarrier signals are reected by objects causing
signal cancellation. Combined with the powerful ECC (Error Correction Coding) of the
receiver, this wireless system can recover
the entire signal in virtually any environment.

COFDM (Coded Orthogonal

Frequency Division Multiplexing)
Transmission

Diversity Reception

Wireless transmission systems in general

can be subject to reception interruptions, but
the WLL-CA55/CA50 minimizes these interruptions. This results from applying COFDM,
a signal modulation technique optimized for
the transmission of high data-rate streams
such as MPEG-2 video. COFDM essentially
splits a signal into multiple RF channels and

For stable transmission between the receiver

and transmitter, wireless systems are often
set up using two separated independent
tuners with their associated antennas
located apart. This conguration is called a
diversity reception system. The distance
between the two antennas allows each tuner
to receive a signal that has taken a different

path, from which the signal with fewer

dropouts is chosen. The WLL-RX55 receiver
has integrated dual tuners and a diversity
switcher to offer rock-steady diversity
reception from one compact unit. Unlike
some other systems that simply monitor the
RF signal strength, the WLL-RX55 uses
packet switching techniques so that the signal with the fewest errors is used.

Time Interleave
Used in conjunction with error-correcting
codes, a data communication technique
called time interleaving adds another level of
signal integrity by reducing the number of
burst errors. Essentially, time interleaving
shufes data bits before transmission, and
then deshufes the data bits at the receiver,
making the transmission more robust and
resilient to burst errors. The Sony wireless
camera system employs three modes of
time interleaving.

Ease of Use
Wireless Camera Control*

Secure Encryption Key

Wireless camera control becomes possible

when an appropriate Sony wireless microphone system is used in combination with the
WLL-CA55 and WLL-RX55. In the Sony wireless camera system, camera control signals
are converted to the audio spectrum and then
transmitted over the wireless microphone
frequency**. An optional RM-B150/B750
Remote Control Unit or RCP-700 series
Remote Control Panel connected to the
WLL-RX55 is used to control the camera.
The RM-B750 can be attached to the front
panel of the WLL-RX55, allowing for smart
integration. The RM-B750 colour LCD panel
provides picture-monitoring, for quick conrmation of signal integrity. Tally and intercom
signals are also transmitted via the wireless
microphone system.

One concern broadcasters have with wireless

technology is that other broadcasters might
inadvertently pick up their transmissions. This
concern can be set aside with the Sony wireless camera system, as it includes a secure
encryption key that can be set so that only
your own receivers can pick up your signal
transmissions.

Cable-Free Connection
This WLL-CA55/CA50 Wireless Camera
Transmitter is designed to dock easily onto
the back of the camera or camcorder for a
secure t and a stable connection without the
use of external cables.

Flexible Channel Selector

Changing channels is easy with the
RF-channel selector. Operated from the
menu, it enables you to choose between
up to 7 channels. If ne-tuning is required,
frequencies can also be adjusted in 1 MHz
steps.

User-Friendly Menu
Since the WLL-CA55/CA50 settings are menu
driven, it is very easy to set frequencies and
secure encryption codes or transmission
streams as required. For further ease of use,
a number of preset operating modes are
available, which can be quickly selected by
camera operators. An advanced menu allows
customised selection of data rates, modulation type and various other parameters. In
addition, the LCD displays status information
and alarm messages, so you constantly monitor the units performance.

Low Power Consumption

The WLL-CA55 consumes only 15 watts of
power. When combined with the BVP-E10
series, more than two hours of continuous
operation is possible using a BP-IL75
battery. The WLL-CA50 power consumption
is also a very low 9 watts, allowing for longer
operation.

AC/DC Operation
The WLL-RX55 is designed to operate on AC
or DC power. DC operation greatly expands
system exibility in eld production truck
applications.

antenna can be replaced with your choice of
alternative antennae.
