PURPOSE OF TESTS

The purpose of the tests is to check the full functionality of the protection relay.
This procedure does not intend to check that all alarms and trips are correctly sent to the DCS or
SCADA level. This part is already developed into dedicated DCS or SCADA Commissioning
procedures.
This procedure does not intend to check all tripping matrix and PSL logic tests, this, when applicable, is
described into a separate document, dedicated to the specific substation and feeder type.

TEST PROCEDURES
The following procedures are written for demonstrating the main protection functions of the P922
relay using an Omicron test set or similar. The tests do not test the boundaries of all available function
characteristics. They do test that the function is operating at a point on one chosen characteristic. This
document is to be referred to when performing commissioning tests in association with the
commissioning section of the service manual.

NOTE :
All the Test are performed in the Test Switch.
Omicron CMC156 Test Equipment or Any Equivalent To Be Used ..

7.1 Testing Over/Under Frequency function

Note : stage (f1>) or (f1<)
To maintain the same connection and assignment , first program the 1st frequency stage at (81>)
(overfrequency), then configure it at (81<) (underfrequency). Then measure the values given below
Values to be measured:
1. stage (f1>) or (f1<)
2. time delay (tf1>) or (tf1<)
Stage (f1>) check:
1. If time delay (tf1>) is short, gradually increase the frequency from the nominal frequency fn to the
value of the stage (f1>): tripping should occur for a frequency in the range [(f1>) 10mHz, (f1>) +
10mHz].
2. If time delay (tf1>) is long, adjust the frequency to [(f1>) 50mHz] and check that tripping does not
occur. Increase the frequency to 1.2x(f1>) and check that tripping occurs.
3. Gradually reduce the frequency and measure the value of the drop-off stage (f1>): the function must
reset for a frequency less than or equal to [(f1>) 50mHz].
Stage (f1<) check:
1. If time delay (tf1<) is short, gradually reduce the frequency from the nominal frequency fn to the
value of the stage (f1<): tripping should occur for a frequency in the range [(f1<) 10mHz, (f1<) +
10mHz].
2. If time delay (tf1<) is long, adjust the frequency to [(f1<) + 50mHz] and check that tripping does not
occur. Reduce the frequency to 0.8x(f1<) and check that tripping occurs.
3. Gradually increase the frequency and measure the value of the drop-off stage (f1<): the function must
reset for a frequency greater than or equal to [(f1<) +50mHz].
Action check:
1. appearance of an alarm message on the display

2. flashing of the Alarm LED

3. illumination of the Trip LED if tripping is programmed
4. Illumination of the LEDs associated with instantaneous information (f1>) and (f1<) andtime-delayed
information (tf1>) and (tf1<) if programmed
5. trip relay operation (RL1) if programmed
6. operation of output relay associated with stages (f1>) and (f1<) if programmed
7.2 Testing of Binary Inputs :
This test checks that all the opto-isolated inputs on the relay are functioning correctly. (5 opto-isolated
inputs for the P922).
The opto-isolated inputs should be energized one at a time. Ensuring correct polarity, connect the
auxiliary voltage to the appropriate terminals for the input being tested. The opto-isolated input
terminal..
The line "INPUTS" in the "OP. PARAMETERS" menu gives the state of each input, a '1' indicating an
energized input and a '0' indicating a de-energized input. When each input is energized one of the digits
on the bottom line of the display will change to the value to indicate the new state of the inputs.
7.3 Testing of Binary Outputs :
This test checks that all the output relays are functioning correctly. (8 output relays for the P922).The
output relays should be energised one at a time. Connect a continuity tester across the terminals
corresponding to output relay 1 .
In the following window in the "Relay Satus" sub-menu of the "OP PARAMETERS" menu:
Relay 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
Status 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1
Repeat the test for each relay.
Operation will be confirmed by the continuity tester operating for a normally open contact and ceasing
to operate for a normally closed contact.
NOTE: It should be ensured that thermal ratings of anything connected to the output relays during the
test procedure is not exceeded by the associated output relay being operated for too long. It is therefore
advised that the time between application and removal of relay testing kept to the minimum.
If the Outputs are assigned for function this will be tested along with Functional test of relays.
