1 PURPOSE OF TESTS
The purpose of the tests is to check the full functionality of the protection relay.
This procedure does not intend to check that all alarms and trips are correctly sent to the DCS or
SCADA level. This part is already developed into dedicated DCS or SCADA Commissioning
procedures.
This procedure does not intend to check all tripping matrix and PSL logic tests, This, when applicable, is
described into a separate document, dedicated to the specific substation and feeder type.

7. TEST PROCEDURES
The following procedures are written for demonstrating the main protection functions of the P544
relay using an Omicron test set or similar. The tests do not test the boundaries of all available function
characteristics. They do test that the function is operating at a point on one chosen characteristic. This
document is to be referred to when performing commissioning tests in association with the
commissioning section of the service manual.
NOTE :
All the Test are performed in the Test Switch.
Omicron CMC156 Test Equipment or Any Equivalent To Be Used .
.
7.1. Differential Function Tests :( Ref Record Test Sheet 8.5)
To perform this test the relay should be set on Test loop back mode - Enabled in Commission Tests
Setting.
7.1.1 Pick Up and Time measurement Test : ( Ref 8.5.1)
Inject current on Phase A starting from 0.001 A to until the relays trip on Phase A Differential.
Record the values in the test sheet. The same Steps will be repeated for other Phases.
Inject 2 X I Pickup in Phase A and Measure the Operating time of the Relay. Note down
readings. The same Steps will be repeated for other Phases.
Inject current of 1A is injected into the A phase which is used as the bias current. The relay will
trip and any contacts associated with the A-phase will operate, but ignore them for the moment.
Inject another small current into the B phase which is used as differential current. Ia is always
greater than Ib. Slowly increase the current in the B phase until Phase B trips. Record the phase
B current magnitude. Switch OFF the ac supply, read and clear all alarms.

The current magnitude at which B phase element operates should be 0.25 amp +/- 10%. (Assumption:
Is1 = 0.2pu, k1 = 30%, Is2 = 2.0pu. It is noted that B phase operate current is 0.5 x (Is1 + 1.5k1) pu +/10% )
7.1.2
Objective:
To check operation on the upper bias slope of the current differential characteristic.
Relay Settings:
Initial Settings plus enable phase differential protection in the configuration section of the menu.
Method:
Repeat the test in 7.1.1 with the bias current set in the A-phase to be 3pu.
Slowly increase the current in the B phase until phase B trips (bit 2 of [0F04: Test Port Status] is
set to 1). Record the phase B current magnitude and check that it corresponds to the information
below.
Note that the duration of current injections should be short to avoid overheating of the injection
test set and Relay
Pass Criteria:
The current magnitude at which B phase element operates should be 1.15 amp +/- 20%. Assumption:
Is1 = 0.2pu, k2 = 150%, Is2 = 2.0pu. It is noted that B phase Operate current is 0.5 x [(3 x k2) {(k2
k1) x Is2 } + Is1] pu +/- 20%
7.1.3
Objective:
To check operation of the relay in case of Fiber Com error. Noting that tow communication channels are
used with the P544.
Method
Inject 1 A current, then record the operation of the relay. Relay should operate as follows:
When Both channels are health IN, => the relay operates with diff trip only.
When one channel is OUT => the relay operates with diff trip only.
When both the two channels are OUT => the relay operates with dist trip, and give Comm. Fail
Alarm.

Method:
For zone 1 timing apply AN fault at 50% of the Zone 1 reach, for zone 2 apply a CN fault at zone
1 plus 50% Zone 2 minus zone 1 reach, for zone 3 apply a AB fault at zone 2 plus 50% Zone 3
minus zone 2 reach, for zone 4 apply a BC fault at 50% zone 4 reach.
Use the reach test facility in Omicron Test Universe Advance Distance module or Equal test
module in other Test Kits
Pass Criteria:
The operation times should be within 1 to 2 cycles for zone 1 and 5% of the set time for the other zones.
7.2.4
Fault Locator :
Objective:
To verify the correct operation of Fault Locator..
Method:
Apply fault at 100 %,75%,50% and 25 % of AN,BN,CN,AB,BC,CA,ABC and record the values.
Use the reach test facility in Omicron Test Universe Advance Distance module or Equal test
module in other Test Kits
Pass Criteria:
Fault Location + or 2 % of line Length(Solid fault applied on line)
7.3 DIRECTIONAL EF PROTECTION ( DEF ) ( Ref 8.7)
7.3.1 Forward DEF element test: ( Ref 8.7.1)
Apply 3phase volts healthy voltage ( 2 sec ) , inject only one phase current for this test to
the phase under test and reduce voltage of phase under test. Until Vo=Vn/3=(Va+Vb+Vc) is
greater than setting.
With angle of 0 degree between voltage and current , Increase the current in 0.001In
steps, pausing for 1s between each step, until the relay operates on Forward. The current must
then be reduced in the same manner until the protection resets.

PASS CRITERIA
For the relay to pass it shall operate as detailed below.
DT operating time 1.0s +/-2%, IDMT operating time 10.029s +/-5% at 2In and 2.971s +/-5% at 10In.
7.6 Testing of Binary Inputs :
Apply nominal Voltage on respective Relay terminal and Check the Healthiness of Binary Inputs in the
System Manu Relay input status. ( 0 or 1 )
Note : if the BI is used in the scheme the BI will be tested along with scheme.
Caution : please make sure of Nominal voltage and Polarity of Terminal before apply the voltage to
relay.
7.7 Testing of Binary Outputs :
This test checks that all the output relays are functioning correctly.
Ensure that the relay is made in test mode by viewing cell [0F0D: COMMISSION TESTS, Test Mode]
to ensure that it is set to Blocked. The output relays should be energized one at a time. To select output
relay 1 for testing, set cell [0F0E: COMMISSION TESTS, Test Pattern] as appropriate.Connect a
continuity tester across the terminals corresponding to output relay 1 as given in external connection
diagram (P54x/EN IN).To operate the output relay set cell [0F0F: COMMISSION TESTS, Contact Test]
to Apply Test. Operation will be confirmed by the continuity tester operating for a normally open
Contact and ceasing to operate for a normally closed contact. Measure the resistance of the
contacts in the closed state.Reset the output relay by setting cell [0F0F: COMMISSION TESTS, Contact
Test] toRemove Test.Repeat the test for the remaining relays.Return the relay to service by setting cell
[0F0D: COMMISSION TESTS, Test Mode] toDisabled.
Note : If the Outputs are assigned for function this will be tested along with Functional test of
relays.

REMARKS
Confirming that the differential settings could be adjusted depending on the effective charging
current of the line, once the feeder is energized. Steady state differential current, with no load,
should be measured and recorded.
Confirming that the stability and full communication loop should be measured once the
telecommunication between both ends is in operation.
