SSC CHSL Exam BEST STRATEGY, BOOKS/STUDY MATERIAL

1. SSC CHSL Exam BEST STRATEGY

Now the question is what strategy it should be to prepare written. Again I'd ask to do one past/practice paper a week. I have seen some
candidates intend to finish all the syllabus first and do practice papers when 15-20 days are left for the exam. Means they are left with no
other option than doing one paper a day. Certainly I can't suggest this. Doing too much of a thing is never advisable.
In the last 15-20 days doing more than two papers a week could really be extremely harmful for our body as well as the mind. So start
doing practice papers from the very first week of your preparation to the exam itself. I'm sure it'll be much helpful in improving your speed,
time management and finding your weak areas and etc.

Better if you start with previous papers of SSC as they always are standard, and therefore will be more helping in judgement of the
level/type of questions asked in a CHSL exam and will give better practice.
After they are finished you should take other practice/model papers. I have seen Kiran's book on past and practice papers; this is really a
good book in my opinion, though lacking in real quality; but sadly we don't have perhaps any other better choice.

2. IMPORTANCE OF GK
Unlike CGL where GK is just 50/600, in CHSL it's at par with other sections of the paper. It's 50 for each subject. So it's importance
increases to manifold. Also the final cut-offs, as you see, are increasing heavily year by year. One of the reasons of high cut-offs though
also is fewer vacancies for LDC in each year as the govt has a plan to slowly abolish this post. The importance of GK thus increases more
as this will certainly result in higher cut-offs.
Well, Now a days you need 135 or so marks for the final selection as LDC. You can't score this much in rest of the sections, i.e. Reasoning,
Maths and English, you must get your GK right.
See here the last cut-offs

3. Suggestive Time Table

As I think a person who is not in job should devote at least 8 hours time each day to his preparation according to the time shown against
each component of the syllabus for CHSL though it's purely suggestive.
1. GK----------------------3 hours
2. Reasoning------------1/2 hour
3. Maths------------------2 & 1/2 hours
4. English----------------2 hours
In addition to this if an hour time or so is spent on some activities of sports and some time on programmes of entertainment on TV etc; will
really be nice for maintaining mental state in good condition. But not more than it.
NOTE-I: For reasoning doing exercises given in the past and practice papers should be enough. But dont forget to consult any good book if
you find a question not under control. One should also take help of a book on reasoning for the type of questions which are not in practice
sets while they fall into a topic of the syllabus provided.
NOTE-II: A person already in job too should try to spare more and more time for the preparation; I think almost 4 hours a day in addition to
the full day timetable for the days of holidays.

4. SSC CHSL Exam--Are HCF and LCM, BOAT and Streams etc in Syllabus?
Bhaai ARUP DASS's Query on Syllabus
There is no mention of H.C.F and L.C.M, boat and stream etc. chapters in this new syllabus. Can we infer that no question will be
set from these chapters?
Ronnie Bansal
They are a must to do; they all are parts of other chapters given in the syllabus. For example, H.C.F. & L.C.M. are parts of NUMBER
SYSTEM and Boat and stream is part of TIME AND DISTANCE.

5. SSC CHSL Exam BOOKS/STUDY MATERIAL

We have only one paper in written in a CHSL exam unlike a CGLE where there are three. And four subjects namely GK, Reasoning, English &
Maths to prepare. In any exam quality books/study material matters much. In my opinion the following books/study material should be right:
i) GK
i) GK of Lucent
ii) NCERT books for Science from 6th to 10th (if time is available)
iii) Monthly Magazine 'Pratiyogita Darpan
iv) Any good quality newspaper like 'The Hindu'
ii) REASONING
SSC previous years papers and Kiran's practice work-book should be enough.
iii) ENGLISH
i) OBJECTIVE GENERAL ENGLISH of R S AGGARWAL
I'd say OBJECTIVE GENERAL ENGLISH of R S AGGARWAL is really a nice nice book from the prospective of CGLE barring certain topics like
VOICE, NARRATION & ARTICLES etc. The following is suggested:
Only the following chapters of R S Agrawal are relevant for CHSL
1. Synonyms (from practice set-16)
2. Antonyms (from practice set-11)
6. One Word Substitution
8. Comprehension-II (Leave the chapter-7 on comprehension as it has long passages; in CGLE they are short ones rather)
11. Sentence Completion

12. Passage Completion (Cloze Test)

14. Common Errors
15. Spotting Errors
16. Sentence Improvement
20. Rearrangement of Sentences in a Paragraph
24. Idioms & Phrases
25. Active & Passive Voice (In addition one must not forget to practice it from WREN & MARTIN and THOMSON & MARTINET as they
are much much better books on this).
26.Direct and Indirect Speech (Again WREN & MARTIN and THOMSON % MARTINET best for this topic).
28. Spelling Test
ii) Wren and Martin alongwith its key-book
iv) MATHS
i) Quick Arithmetic of Ashish Aggarwal (Now it has Geometry & Trigonometry both included); of course the best book for CHSL Exam
ii) Quantitative Attitude of R S Agrawal
iii) Class IX & X books of NCERT/R D Sharma for geometry and trigonometry (especially to clear the basics/roots as well to practise some
questions);
But never forget to practise previous papers & model papers to master it all.

SKILL TESTS
1. SSC CHSL Exam [Typing is Essential----IMPORTANCE]
In this exam how high you score in the written is; is worthless unless you are able to qualify the type test. So to learn typing at the needed
speed becomes a must for this exam. If a person knows typing; he must do practice for atleast 20 minutes daily; and if a person is fresher
he must start it learning from this very moment (40-45 minutes at least for daily). Otherwise the things will be disastrous. .
It is seen that many of the candidates become serious to their typing after the written result, when much time in not left to learn

it. Learning type and gaining the required speed generally requires 5 months. So start it well in advance.
One more thing: Do your practice on the PC using TVS keyboard as in the exam hall they are TVS boards usually. If you do it on the
LAPTOP, attach it with a TVS keyboard while practising.

2. SSC CHSL Exam [TYPE TEST Vs DATA ENTRY SKILL TEST (DEST)]
Well, if we see the DATA ENTRY SKILL TEST is no different than a typing test; in which we have to do typing on the computer @ 8,000
characters per hour i.e. almost the speed of almost 27 wpm (words per minute) . Whereas for the post of LDC it's 35wpm. The difference is
big; and therefore that might be one of the reasons of higher cut-offs for the post of DEO. Anyway, further we'll call both of these tests by
the name of TYPE TEST.

3. SSC CHSL Exam--No Certificate For Skill Test

NO EDUCATIONAL/PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IS NEEDED FOR DEST/TYPING TEST.

4. SSC CHSL Exam--Learn Typing; Be an LDC/DEO

The final cut-offs of any exam are generally much higher than that we see them in the written part of the examination. But in CHSL exam
cut-offs for the post of LDC and DEO do not show that big difference. Whatever that increase is in the cut-offs, it's not as substantial. I
mean to say it's only because of typing being an essential part of the exam. Had typing not been compulsory the situation would certainly
have been different.
As many of the aspirants in this exam are CGLE left-out cases; marks equal to the cut-off become so easy to score in a CHSL exam. From
my experience I have seen that the candidates scoring very high in the written part are not generally found that good in typing. So I'm
certain if YOU ARE OK WITH YOUR TYPING THE POST OF LDC/DEO IS YOURS.

5. SSC CHSL Exam--Time Required to Learn Typing

It actually depends on an individual how much time he takes to gain typing speed at 35wpm. But generally it takes 5-6 months. Starting
typing learning from an institute does help but if you are not comfortable in finding an institute nearby you can learn it at home too. In both
the cases utmost sincerity is required.

6. SSC CHSL Exam--Is Backspace Allowed in Skill-test?

SUMAN's Query on Skill
In DEST, do we have to type in MS word or in other software application? If any other application software, is back space allowed
in that? the passage given will be hard copy or soft copy?
RONNIE BANSAL
This is their own software which has been programmed for time-set, recognition of errors and measuring speed etc. But this is like NOTE
PAD; means they give a certain printed (HARD COPY) passage that we have to type like the we do in NOTE PAD. Backspace is allowed. In
fact this is very simple passage and hardly containing any special character. Figures too are 4-5 generally. Errors are not
shown/underlined. NOT A BIG DEAL OF COURSE!

7. SSC CHSL Exam--Is it Essential to Appear in Both Skill Tests?

SUMAN>ThE NaMe ItSeLf dEfInEs mE's Query on Skill Test
If I qualify 4 d both post, shall I be given any option to choose or have 2 appear both skill test? n wat if I fail 2 qualify one or
both?
Ronnie Bansal
If you qualify for both the posts you'll be called for both the skill tests. If you fail to qualify one of them you'll be selected for the other
post; and if you fail in both the skill tests you wont be selected for any of the posts. If you qualify both the skill tests you'll selected for
the post which you preferred at the first place.
Both the tests are held in one single day; one in the morning and the other in the evening.
