sunrise over Sabine Lake and named the town Aurora. With hundreds
of members, the krewe’s main purpose is to promote and celebrate the
Mardi Gras season in Southeast Texas.
Paul Oliver is the krewe’s new costume and back-piece designer,
although he’s had a seven-year relationship with the group as a parade-
float designer. He works closely with Marie Broussard, who has been
the krewe’s seamstress for 10 years. The theme this year is “Games
People Play,” so board games and playing cards will be incorporated into
the colorful costumes.
The process goes like this: While preparing for the current Mardi
Gras celebration, the krewe members brainstorm ideas for the next year’s
theme and the ball captain makes the final decision. A marketing poster
is created and the costume designer then sketches ensembles based on the
theme. After the designs are approved, usually by June, members of the
krewe’s royal court draw numbers to determine the order in which they
can make their selections. Once the couples have chosen their designs and
fabrics, Broussard takes their measurements and gets started. “Everything is
custom work,” she said. Once the outfits have been sewn and perfectly fitted
to each court member, they are taken to other krewe members, including
Vickey Roccaforte, co-ball captain, for decoration. “They bling them up,”
Broussard said of the sequins, feathers, rhinestones and glitter added to the
garments.
Aurora invites all krewe members and sponsors to become royalty, which is
limited to 12 couples. If the court is full, names will be added to the following
year’s list of courtiers. The king and queen are chosen by drawing names from
a hat on the night of the ball. All royalty who have not been king and queen are
eligible and the number of years that they have participated in the royal court is
the number of times their names go into the hat.
One ensemble can take 40 to 60 hours to complete and there are 24 to
make. That’s 960 to 1,440 hours! And how much does one of these lavish,
labor-intensive costumes cost? Oliver won’t be specific. “I will say this,” he
said. “It’s not cheap.” Laura Childress, Aurora’s captain, won’t give an exact
price either, but says that each is worth several thousand dollars.
The huge, custom-made back-pieces are a big part of the expense but the
ladies-in-waiting wouldn’t dream of going without them. The back-piece
effect could be described as a combination peacock, Vegas show girl and hu-
man parade float. “These things are pretty elaborate,” Oliver said. They are
about 7 feet wide and 8 feet high and weigh about 25 pounds. (Oliver light-
ened the load by several pounds from last year’s design.) They are made of
foam decorated with feathers, rhinestones and glitter and mounted on an
aluminum frame. They are strapped on to the noble (and strong) ladies of
the court, who wear them proudly for close to three hours.
The completed costumes are cloaked in secrecy until the dress re-
hearsal the night before the ball, which heightens the anticipation and
“wow factor,” Broussard said. “After 10 years, I’m still amazed.”
The ensembles are never reused. The back-pieces and headdresses
are disassembled and only the feathers are recycled. “It’s a one-time
deal,” Oliver said.
That uniqueness is what makes the krewe so grand, according to
Childress. “Every year, Aurora delivers a quality, top-notch, over-the-
top production,” she said, adding that the money raised by the krewe
at Mardi Gras benefits nonprofit community groups.
Can a Mardi Gras costume be too outrageous? Is there such a thing
as too much bling? “No,” Oliver said. “More is better.” VIP

rehearsal the night before the ball. These sketches are from last
year, but give a sense of the extravagance of these ensembles.

Set the Stage

Nothing kills the mood like dirty laundry piled next to the bed
and a sitcom blaring in the background. To get in the mood and in
the moment, create a serene atmosphere conducive to relaxed inti-
macy. Clear away the clutter, dim the lights, and light some scented
candles, and you will forget your worries and truly enjoy some
stress-free quality time with the one you love.

Try Different Positions

You wouldn’t eat the same thing for dinner every night, so why
have the same old sex?

Spice it Up
Sometimes all it takes to inject some passion into your love life is
a little something out of the ordinary. With Internet access and many
websites offering discreet delivery, it’s possible to try out movies
and toys without blushing your way through a checkout line. Dawn
Montez, manager of Cindie’s Adult Products, recommends herbal
libido lifters for those whose sex drive is depressed. “There are
products that we recommend to younger women, as well as those go-
ing through menopause,” she said. “They are basically aphrodisiacs
that help boost the making of certain hormones.” Cindie’s also stocks
libido enhancers for men. Speak with a doctor before taking any
herbal pills because they can increase heart rate.

What’s 44 years old, loves Budweiser commercials and is moving to South Florida? If
your middle-aged uncle came to mind, you’d be wrong. However, if your thoughts went
to American’s favorite football championship, Super Bowl XLIV, then you’d be dead on!
Of course, most fans of the Super Bowl are only moderate fans of the sport of football.
Those of you attending Super Bowl parties this year, fess up…it’s the food you love!
This year, take the stress out of America’s greatest unofficial holiday with some handy
tips from Tabetha Franklin, a local wife and momma of two, who has made a living out of
simplifying cooking with The Main Dish Studio Kitchen.

text by HOLLI PETERSEN

Tabetha’s Words
to Eat By:
“Super Bowl food should be simple!
You’re eating in front of a T.V. Don’t
bother making it complicated!”
“Fan or not, women don’t want to
be stuck in the kitchen the whole
time. Plan ahead and make ahead.”
“It’s really up to your crowd if you
should have dessert or not. I find
that the guys don’t care as much
about dessert. It’s the women who
want a little something sweet.”
“Half-time is a great opportunity
to refresh the snacks and clean up.
Be prepared, the guests are usually
ready for seconds at half-time.”

that bring lots of laughs, Kinky Friedman is a deep thinker,
a dreamer and a romantic.
“I’m basically a songwriter,” he said. “I realize it’s a giant
step down to enter politics. I just might blurt out the truth.”
Friedman has been described many ways: as a humorist,
a satirist, a modern day Will Rogers, the Frank Zappa of
country music and, lately, a political candidate.
In December, Friedman threw his black hat into the ring for
the Democratic nomination for agriculture commissioner,
a race to be determined by the March 2 statewide primary.

Hervy Hiner Jr. text by CATHLEEN COLE

I
t’s a busy Saturday night at
Suga’s Deep South Cuisine
and Jazz Bar in downtown
Beaumont. Relaxed patrons
enjoy dessert and after-
dinner drinks as the jazz
singer croons. The manager
mingles with customers
as the waitstaff attends to
their culinary desires. Is the
proprietor available? No, he’s at home
eating ice cream and enjoying his solitude.
Hervy Hiner Jr. is not an outgoing man.
He likes peace and quiet and considers
himself a loner. Growing up on the fam-
ily ranch in Pittsburg, Texas, he helped his
father raise Hereford cattle and was active
in the local 4-H chapter. There weren’t a lot
of African-American cowboys back then,
but his father also taught agriculture classes
at the local high school, so it seemed like a
natural fit. Aspiring to become a veterinar-
ian also seemed a logical choice. “It’s what I
knew,” he said. But an aunt talked him into
becoming a medical doctor, so he hung up
his chaps and spurs and headed to college.
He graduated in 1979 from the Baylor Col-
lege of Medicine as an internal medicine
doctor specializing in nephrology and came
to Port Arthur in the late ’80s.
Collecting art was not a planned hobby.
In the ’90s, he was thinking of building a
home and perusing issues of Architectural
Digest for ideas when he saw an advertise-
ment for Galerie Royale in New Orleans
featuring a painting by African-American
artist William Tolliver. Intrigued by the
work, he contacted the gallery and soon was

the proud owner of Tolliver’s “Purple Lady.”

That was the beginning of his interest in
African-American artists and their work.
Today his numerous paintings adorn the
walls of his home, office and restaurant. He’s
not an auction hound — rather, he keeps in
touch with several gallery owners who know
his tastes. He won’t purchase a painting just
because it’s thought to be a good invest-
ment. “It comes down to what you see in the
picture,” he said. “You always buy what you
like.”
Accompanying his taste for fine art are
tastes for good food and music. However,
opening an upscale restaurant and jazz club and contemporary jazz, and he already ice cream, opened in December 2005.
