Introduction

What Is in This Manual?

PetroWorks offers several tools for importing, exporting, and
converting data.
This manual describes the following tools:

Log Export Utility (page 6) allows you to export log data to an

ASCII data file. Supported formats are SMI (for use in
Stratamodel), LAS 1.2, and LAS 2.0.

Wellbore Data Converter (page 25) provides a way to create

pseudo log curves from conventional core analysis data such as
porosity and oil saturation that can then be manipulated like any
other nonresampleable curves within PetroWorks and OpenWorks
applications.

To access this manual online, select Help > Online Manual from the
PetroWorks Pro, PetroWorks Asset, or LogEdit Command Menu.

Exporting Log Data

Overview
Log Export Utility allows you to export log data to an ASCII data file in
any of three formats:
SMI, as defined for use with the Stratigraphic Geo-cellular
Model (SGM) that StataModel uses
the common log ASCII Standard (LAS) 1.2
the common log ASCII Standard (LAS) 2.0
Log Export Utility outputs an ASCII file for each selected well.
This utility supports both single well and multi-well/multi-log
processing. In addition, it supports conventional depth processing by
total well, specified depths, or units (as defined by the current
interpreters source priority list).
The Log Export Utility now offers optional outputs for TVD (true
vertical depth) and TVDSS (true vertical depth subsea) along with
periodic MD (measured depth values. TVD and TVDSS values are
those associated with periodic MD depths, and are themselves
aperiodic.

Communicating Between Landmark Applications

You can communicate between applications via the Pointing
Dispatcher. The OpenWorks (PD) (Pointing Dispatcher) allows you to
import single and multiple wells from other Landmark applications into
Log Export Utility. You can send and receive wells, as long as the PD
frame is listening.
Press <Ctrl-l> to activate/deactivate the PD utility. When the PD border
is green, PD is listening for other well data. When the border is red, PD
is deactivated for this application.
Iconified windows can receive information.
You can PD information to a window that is iconified as long as the border on the
icon is green. If the iconified window is a StratUtil application and the border is red,
you can use the key combination Ctrl+l (lowercase letter el) or click on the
iconified window and select PD Listen from the menu that appears to turn the
border green and to enable listening capability.

Selecting an Export Format and Setting Export Options

Select an export format. Log data can be exported in any of the
following three formats:

Stratamodel Deviated Well (SM1)1

Log ASCII Standard (LAS) version 1.22
Log ASCII Standard (LAS) version 2.03

SM1
SM1 format is designed for use with the Stratigraphic Geo-cellular
Model (SGM) of StrataModel.
SM1 format is always generated using True Vertical Depth (TVD)
mode. All elevations and Total Depth values, as well as all Z-axis depth
values, reflect this depth type. The log data is retrieved and sampled as
Measured Depth. The corresponding positions and equivalent TVD
values are exported as X, Y, Z data points. The measured depth values
are also exported as Z.
This utility can produce an SM1 export file only when all X,Y, Z
information is found for a well. Consequently, downhole position
information must exist for a well. If downhole position information is
not available for a given well, it is assumed that it is a straight hole and
all x,ys will be the same. If no surface x,y coordinates are associated
with the well, the export file is not created.
The well symbol produced in SM1 format files is always zero.
Consequently, SM1 format ignores the OpenWorks well symbol id that
is associated with the exported well.

LAS
LAS formats can be exported as MD, TVD, or TVDSS. You may
specify a depth interval in MD, TVD, or TVDSS for the input and

convert these depths to another format for export by toggling on the

desired format on the Export Format Options panel.

Initializing Log Export Utility

Upon initializing OpenWorks and then initializing Log Export Utility,
you must:

select a project
specify an interpreter
choose a well list
create and save your source priority preferences

If you have not yet selected a project or an interpreter, you are

prompted for this information. You are prompted to select a well list.
However, you may cancel the prompt for the well list, and initialize the
application without a well list.
It is always a good idea to create and save your own source priority
preferences to an ASCII file in Utilities > Interpreter/Source Priority.
Otherwise, Log Export Utility will create a source priority file for you
and give you (the current interpreter) highest priority.Once this
information has been entered, you can begin setting up your data for
processing.

1.

Select one or more wells from the Well List by placing the cursor
over the name of the well and clicking MB1.
Single Well

Multi-Well

Use the Select All and Select None buttons to help select your
wells.
2.

Once you have made your selection, press the Apply Well
Selections button. The appropriate list of log curves and the units
are updated.

3.

Next, select the log data you wish to export.

Note that not all logs may be present in the selected wells. Toggle
on the Display Curves Common to Selected Wells button to
determine which (if any) logs are not available for the selected set
of wells.

Multi-Well (the curves that appear in the list depend on

whether you choose to display all curves or common curves)

4.

Set the depth units. Depth units may be in feet or meters. The
application defaults to the depth units for the current project.
However, you can switch between units of measurement.
Moreover, if you switch from one unit to another after inputting
the top and base depths for the depth interval, the top and base
depth values will be converted to reflect the selected unit.

5.

Select Options > Depth Type to indicate how the application will
interpret the top/base depth interval values. Selections include:
Measured Depth (MD)
True Vertical Depth (TVD)
True Vertical Depth Sub Sea (TVDSS)
When interpreted as Measured Depth (MD) or True Vertical Depth
(TVD), the top depth must be less than the base depth.
Example:

When interpreted as True Vertical Depth Sub-Sea (TVDSS), the

top depth must be greater than the base depth.
Example:
Top Depth
-1000

Base Depth
-5000

It is especially important that you know which mode is being used

when processing by specified depths and using the LAS format.
6.

Toggle on the appropriate button to specify the depth interval.

Press the Total Depth Range toggle button to export log curve
data from the highest top to the deepest bottom of the currently
selected wells. The exported depth interval may vary between
wells.
Press the Depth Interval toggle button to enter user-specified
values for the top and bottom depth range. You can specify any
value between 0 and 10000. Press Button 3 to view the
minimum, maximum and default interval values. The values are
interpreted as the currently selected depth units (feet or meters).
What if my log curve values lie partially or completely outside
logged intervals?
When exporting data from multiple wells, you may end up specifying top and
base depths that define an interval that lies outside the logged interval for a
selected well. When this occurs, log curve values for intervals that lie partially
(or completely) outside logged intervals are exported as nulls.

Press the Unit Selections toggle button to define depth range in

terms of one or more units. The list of units that appears is
ordered according to the prevailing source priority. Log Export
displays all units where the picks for boundary surfaces are
present in all wells. The exported depth interval ranges from the
highest bounding pick to the lowest bounding pick for the
selected units.
Indicate whether you wish null values to be placed between
non-contiguous units by toggling on or off the Fill with NULLs
between Non-Contiguous Units button.

7.

Enter a value for the sample interval. All curves will be resampled
at the specified sample interval. Two options are available:
Default guarantees you the smallest sampling frequency from
all periodic log data input into the algorithm. If none of the data
is periodic, a default is chosen based on depth units. The default
for feet is 0.5. For meters, the default is 0.125.
User Specified allows you to specify any value between 0.001
and 10. The values are interpreted as the currently selected
depth units, i.e. feet or meters. The selections for this parameter
include the minimum and maximum values and a clear all
option. For both feet and meters, the minimum value is 0.001,
the maximum value is 10.0. The default for feet is 0.5. For
meters, the default is 0.125. Note that the default value, which
is shown in the User-specified field, changes when you change
depth units.

8.

Select an export format. Log data can be exported in any of the

following three formats:

Filename: The export filenames are based on information

found in the well header. The filename may be created from the
common well name or from the wells Unique Well Identifier
(UWI). If a unique filename cannot be generated for the current
export process, a unique file name is created using the internal
OpenWorks well ID, and a warning message appears.
Substitution Rule: Because the well name or UWI may
contain characters that are inappropriate for use in an external
filename, you are asked to indicate how these characters should
be treated. There are three options:
remove restricted characters
replace restricted characters with an underbar character
replace restricted characters with a lowercase letter x
Export Null: To generate an export file with uniform null
values for all log curves, you may specify a value that
represents a null or empty value. When specified, this value will
be generated and placed wherever there is a null value in the log
data. The default export null value is 999.0.
Internal Well Identifier (required for SM1 format): For SM1
format, an internal well identifier is placed in a brief header
inside the file. The file format currently limits the length of this
well identifier to 12 characters. Identifiers that exceed this
number of characters are truncated. To ensure unique well
identification, you can choose to identify the well inside the
export file by entering its common well name or UWI.
The application removes blank characters from the UWI before
inserting it into the export file. As a result, it is possible to have
multiple export files with nonunique well identifiers in SM1
files.
Export TVD/TVDSS Depths (optional for LAS formats):
Toggle on the Export TVD Depths or Export TVDSS Depths
button to convert from MD to the desired format.
10. Now that you are ready to export the selected data, press the
Export Log Curves button.

been completely exported. The status area notifies you as each
well is exported.

Converting Wellbore Data

Overview
Some quantitative well bore data, in particular core analysis data, are
stored in the tables in the OpenWorks database that PetroWorks
applications cannot directly access. Wellbore Data Converter provides
a way to create pseudo log curves from these conventional core analysis
data.
Each interpreter can then have a personal working copy of these pseudo
log data curves and can manipulate them like any other
nonresampleable curves within PetroWorks and OpenWorks
applications. The original data in the core tables are not modified.
For example, the following Single Well Viewer plot portion shows
pseudo log curves of porosity, oil saturation, and water saturation data
along with depth and CN and ZDEN curves for a well. The core data
are also plotted as numeric values.

R2003.12.1

Converting Wellbore Data:

New Features for PetroWorks

Landmark

Three OpenWorks tables are queried for Wellbore Data Converter:

Well Core Sample Analysis

This table contains 39 common quantitative core parameters such
as Grain Density, Oil Saturation, Water Saturation, and Porosity.
You cannot add additional parameters to this table.

Well Core Sample Property

This table extends the model by allowing you to add your own
core data parameters to the OpenWorks database. Note that if a
parameter name in this table is identical to one in the Well Core
Sample Analysis table, Wellbore Data Converter will display only
the data from the Well Core Sample Analysis table.

Well Core Shift

This table allows interpreters to provide depth shift information so
that when core data are converted, depth shifts over selected
intervals occur automatically on the basis of petrophysics source/
priority if data exist at depths specified for the interval(s). To avoid
automatic depth shifting, remove the interpreter(s) using Session >
Source Priority List Manager.

If the core sample tables are not already populated, use the OpenWorks
ASCII Data Loader to load core data. Create core shifts using LogEdit.

Apply Well Selections causes Wellbore Data Manager to display

in the Wellbore Data area any core analysis data present in the
OpenWorks database core tables for currently selected wells.

Convert/Store as Log Curve causes the selected rows of wellbore

data in the Wellbore Data area to be stored as pseudo log curves in
the OpenWorks database. Data are converted and stored on the
basis of Source/Priority and are stored as single points. The pseudo
log curves follow the five-key curve naming scheme. Core data are
automatically depth shifted according to data presented in the Well
Core Shift table. To avoid automatic depth shifting, remove the
interpreter(s) from your petrophysics source/priority list using
Session > Source Priority List Manager.

Converting Wellbore Data

To convert wellbore data to pseudo log curves, do the following:
1.

From the Well list, select the well or wells that contain the
wellbore data you want to convert by clicking on the well names.
If you want to select all wells, click on the Select All button.

2.

Select the type of wellbore data to display by clicking on the Type

button and choosing an option. (For the 1998.5 release, only the
Standard Core Analysis Data type is available.)

3.

Click on Apply Well Selections.

Generating the display may take several minutes, depending on the
number of wells selected and the amount of data in the database.
You may need to increase the window size to see all the columns
of data.
The display area displays all the wellbore data for the selected
wells. If a wellbore property does not occur in a selected well, the
property is not displayed. You cannot filter the data display on the
basis of interpreter/source priority. (Interpreter/Source Priority
does apply when converting data.)

The rows are sorted by well ID, then Interval top depth, then CoreObs# combination, then alphabetically by property.
The data come from the OpenWorks Well Core Sample Analysis
table and the Well Core Sample Property table. The Well Core
Sample Analysis table contains 39 common core properties.

4.

Select the rows that contain the properties (and intervals) you want
to convert to log curves by clicking on the rows. To deselect a row,
click on it.
You can convert multiple properties in a single operation. Separate
log curves are created for each property. If you select a property
over more than one depth interval, the data for each interval are
appended such that the new log curves top depth and bottom
depth correspond to the top depth of the shallowest selected
interval and the bottom depth of the deepest selected interval,
respectively.

Click on Convert/Store as Log Curve.

The application creates log curves composed of single
(nonresampleable) points for each of the Properties you specified.
The resulting curve names have the following syntax:
<PROPERTY NAME>:CORE:rC:NONE:v#

where <PROPERTY NAME> is the Property, CORE is the service,

C (composite) is the run, NONE is the pass, and v# is an
automatically incremented number providing the version of the
curve in the OpenWorks database.
For example,
POROSITY:CORE:rC:NONE:v2
OIL SATURATION:CORE:rC:NONE:v1

The creation routine is WBD CNV.

You can view and manipulate these curves in any PetroWorks or
OpenWorks applications that support log curves, for example,
Curve Utility, Single Well Viewer, LogEdit, CrossPlot, and
Tabular Edit in PetroWorks and Well Curve Viewer and Well Data
Exporter in OpenWorks.
Note the following about pseudo log curves created from core
data:

10

Pseudo curves are made of discrete points, so are

nonresampleable.

The core data tables do not contain NULL values, so no null

values appear in the resulting pseudo log curves.

Bulk shifts are automatically applied to data when conversion

occurs, if a a data point falls within an interpreted depth range
as shown in the Well Core Shift table and if the interpreter who
created the shift is part of your petrophysics source priority list.
To avoid depth shifting the data, go to the Interpreter/Source
Priority List Manager and deselect the petrophysics
interpreters whose shifts you do not want to apply.

My wellbore data log curves do not plot in another application.

If your converted wellbore data to log curves do not appear correctly in other
applications, make sure, within each application, that the minimum and maximum
scale values for the curves are appropriate and that you have selected appropriate
interpreters in Source Priority List Manager.

My pseudo log core data appear to have incorrect units.

When converting data, Wellbore Data Converter assigns a unit type based on the
unit of measurement (UOM) associated with the core data. The unit type is the
basis for conversion among measurement systems. However, Curve Dictionary
assigns a default, or preferred, UOM to unit types, and this UOM is used when
converting between systems of measurement. The preferred UOM may not match
the UOM assigned to your native core data, and therefore incorrect units may
result. For example, native core data may have units of g/cm3 in a US Oil Field
(metric) units project. When Wellbore Data Converter converts the data into
pseudo log curves, the resulting data has units of lb/ft3. Why? When WDC
converts the data, it assigns the unit type mass per volume. However, Curve
Dictionarys preferred UOM for mass per volume in the US Oil Field (metric)
measurement system is lb/ft3, so this UOM is assigned to the pseudo log
curves.
If the converted data appear to have incorrect units, use the OpenWorks Curve
Dictionary (OpenWorks command menu > Data Management > Curve
Dictionary) to view and edit the units associated with the pseudo log curve(s).

Exiting Wellbore Data Converter

When you have finished converting wellbore data to pseudo log curves,
