Odd Words; adalah contoh soal dimana anda harus memilih satu dari empat kata yang paling
berbeda. Untuk nomor 1 anda harus memilih "Meal". Karena kata ini adalah kata umum. Berbeda
dengan breakfast (makan pagi), supper (makan setelah dinner/ late dinner), dinner (makan malam).

MARLIN TEST
Sekarang ini, untuk masuk dunia pelayaran biasanya kita akan dihadapkan dengan ujian
Marlin Test. Marlin Test adalah Maritime English Test. Mengapa kita harus sedikit banyak
menguasai Marlin? Karena ada perbedaan yang sangat signifikan antara bahasa Inggris
di darat dan di laut.
Contoh:
Biasanya kita mengatakan Right untuk kata "kanan", tetapi untuk di kapal "kanan"
dikatakan Starboard Side. Sedangkan kata "kiri" yang di darat dikatakan Left, maka di
atas kapal kita harus mengucapkan Port Side.
Nah, berawal dari sana banyak perusahaan pelayaran yang mensaratkan agar calon
pekerja di perusahaan mereka menguasai Marlin. Holland America Line adalah salah
satu dari perusahaan yang menguji calon pelautnya dengan Marlin Test.
Marlin Test pada dasarnya terdiri dari beberapa bagian, yaitu:
1. Listening
Pada bagian ini kita dituntut untuk mengerti dan memahami apa yang dibicarakan
dalam pembicaraan. Ketika mengerjakan bagian ini, sebaiknya anda mendengarkan
dengan seksama dan memperhatikan soal dengan teliti. Membaca soal terlebih dulu
sebelum mendengarkan pembicaraan akan membantu. Ingat! Kesempatan anda dalam
mengerjakan soal bagian ini hanya (2) dua kali.
2. Filling The Gap
Mengisi jeda dalam sebuah kalimat adalah salah satu bagian dari soal-soal dalam Marlin
Test. Ada kata yang disediakan untuk mengisi jeda dalam soal semacam ini. Jadi berhatihatilah memasukan kata agar jawaban kita benar.
3. Different Sound
Pada contoh soal semacam ini, anda akan diberikan beberapa kata. Dari kata-kata
tersebut ada salah satu kata yang bila diucapkan, cara pengucapannya akan berbeda
dari kata-kata yang lain.
Contoh: BAD, DAD, LAND & DARK. Manakah yang cara pengucapannya berbeda?
BAD /bed/, DAD /ded/, LAND /lend/ & DARK /dark/. Jadi bila dilihat dari cara
pengucapannya, maka DARK lah yang berbeda. Jadi anda harus memilih DARK.
Contoh lain: THROW, DOWN, SLOW & BOWL. Maka yang harus anda pilih adalah DOWN.
4. Odd Words
Pada bagian ini anda akan dihadapakan dengan kata-kata yang berbeda dari kata yang
diberikan. Pada soal ini, kata itu akan terasa ganjil bila memperhatikan kata-kata yang

lain.
Contoh: BOOK, MAGAZINE, TELEVISION, NEWSPAPER. Maka yang harus anda pilih adalah
TELEVISION karena kata ini tidak sesuai dengan kata yang lain. TELEVISION adalah
media elektronik dan sisanya adalah media cetak.
Contoh lain: ARM, HEAD, HAND, HAT. Maka yang anda pilih adalah HAT, karena kata ini
bukan bagian tubuh, tidak seperti kata-kata yang lain.
5. Matching Picture
Pada bagian ini anda harus mencocokan kata yang sesuai dengan gambar. Bila anda
memiliki perbendaharaan kosakata yang banyak, maka soal seperti ini akan terjawab
dengan mudah.
6. Grammar
Soal-soal pada bagian ini harus anda jawab dengan menggunakan grammar. Jadi
kuasailan grammar dengan baik.
7. Arrange Words
Pada soal seperti ini, anda harus menyusun kalimat dengan kata-kata yang berantakan
dan menyusunnya menjadi kalimat yang benar.
8. Reading Comprehension
Membaca sebuah cerita agar bisa menjawab pertanyaan bagian ini. Anda dituntut untuk
memahami isi dari bacaan yang anda baca pada soal ini.
9. What Do You Say.
Pada soal-soal seperti ini anda akan dihadapkan kepada cara anda membaca angka.
