Decorative Arts
Objective
This course aims at creating appreciation among the students about history and
development of art and culture and its impact on interior design.
The course covers the major regions of India with respect to styles of furniture and the
corresponding decorative arts, including fabrics, finishes, colours, design motifs, rugs, porcelain,
glass, pottery, lighting fixtures, silver, and paintings. Major schools and styles of World painting
from the pre-historic to post-modem will also be studied.
Detailed Contents
Traditional Indian folk art and handicrafts of the different states study of traditional designs
and motifs used on surface and objects including pottery, store and earthenware, woodcrafts etc.
o The northern region: Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal
and Delhi.
o Central India: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, lharkhand & Uttranchal
o Eastern India: Assam, Bengal, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur,
Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim
o Southern India: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka,

History of paintings: of different schools of art in India and abroad. A brief


study of the characteristics of each style, the main artists of that particular
style and the important works of art.

o Feng Shui and Vastu Shatra: This course is an introduction to the art of Feng Shui

The students should be able to differentiate between the style and work of various Indian and
international artists such as M.F Hussain, Picasso etc, and also the various painting styles such as
cubism, Renaissance etc.
They should also be able to identify the various traditional motifs and folk designs of the
various Indian states.

Building Services
Objective
This course aims at imparting knowledge to the students in the area of interior services such as air
conditioning, electrification, lighting, water supply, sanitary installations, acoustics and thermal
insulation.

1. Water Supply And Drainage
Water supply: Hot and cold water supply system, types and sizes of pipes; water supply
fittings for bathrooms - water closets, sinks, bathtubs, washbasins, bidets, showers,
urinals etc.

Drainage: Principles of drainage, material for drains, traps - their types, function and uses.
Shapes and sizes of pipes for drainage system, sanitary fixture-W.C., Wash basins, bathtubs, sinks
- their types, sizes etc.

Simple exercises on preparation of layout plans for toilets and kitchens (both public and
residential)

2. Air Conditioning And Ventilation


Basic definition such as latent heat, ton of refrigeration etc

Office Design Studio


Objective
This design studio focuses on designing commercial areas with emphasis on office and
institutional design. Students will develop programming and space planning skills unique to
these environments through a series of small- to medium-sized projects. Emphasis will be placed
on commercial precedents, programming, design process, human factors, building codes, spatial
organization, detailing, presentation techniques, office furniture systems, equipment, finishes and
lighting.

a. Commercial Design Concepts
Study of commercial space planning, methods of planning, design analysis, and problemsolving.

Introduction to construction methods and techniques, materials, and furnishings.

Develop design and production skills, utilizing both manual drafting and designing with
the aid of computers.

b. Office Design
Understanding an office space: its purpose, basic components, user and
user's needs.
Research data relating to office design : data relating to the anthropometric and
ergonomic requirements of an office space as well as the technologies used in a modern
office.
New trends in office design : studying the new trends in the design and layout of offices.
Design projects : students will complete at least three projects in the course of this
subject starting from small to medium sized projects and concluding with a major project
which would include designing of all aspects of an office space.
Outcome

On completion of this course students will have the wherewithal to design an


office space which takes care of all the requirements of the user and which makes use of
materials and technologies appropriate for a modem office.

Furniture Design and Construction


Objective
A study and exploration of furniture design as an expression of art,
sculpture, fulfillment of human requirements, and style. Students will be
introduced to furniture design and detailing through practical demonstration.
Various materials and techniques utilized in the process of furniture design
will be explored.

Introduction to furniture Design
This course introduces students to field of furniture design and the design
process. Through lectures, class discussions, and exercise students are
challenged to develop and apply creative problem-solving skills as well as
formulate, communicate, and present a sound basis for their ideas.

This course introduces students to the basic conventions and skills of technical
drawing and presentation. Students acquire basic literacy in hand graphic skills as well as

Students will learn to design and detail a piece of furniture, completing all
working drawings necessary for fabrication.
Outcome
After studying this subject, students will be able to design furniture using a variety of
materials such as wood, iron and cane etc. students will also be able to prepare detailed working
drawings facilitating the fabrication of these furniture items.

Lighting Design and Application


Objective
This course introduces students to the art and technology of lighting and explores the use
of lighting as a design element in the interior environment. The theory of light, light sources, and

Students will learn to analyse interior lighting installations, calculate lighting levels for
interiors, select appropriate light fixtures and prepare a lighting plan based on one of their studio
projects

and other related drawings required for the execution of the lighting designed for an interior
space.

Commercial Design Studio


Objective
In this course students will further explore space designing for commercial areas with emphasis
on retail and hospitality design. Students will be exposed to the specific design requirements of these
spaces and the issues and vocabulary particular to these spaces. The students will also learn the
importance of a professional portfolio and preparing a resume.

a. Retail Design
Focusing on the functional and aesthetic requirements of retail store design, this
course emphasizes building codes and barrier-free design. Design concepts relating to
merchandising and presentation will be formulated. Exposure to the elaborate
combination of elements and technical specialties necessary to create the "interactive"
entertainment aspect of the retail experience.
b. Hospitality Design
Studio based design projects introducing another important specialist field of
restaurant & bar design, and issues and vocabulary specific to this area of the design discipline.
Restaurant Kitchen & services, Theme oriented designs with detailing to the
level of using graphic communication to design menus etc.
c. Portfolio Presentation
A course in the preparation and presentation of a comprehensive interior design
portfolio, including resume preparation, employment interview skills, and goal setting.
Outcome
On completion of this subject students should be able to design for retail and
hospitality areas complete in all respects. Along with this they should also be able to compile a
portfolio showcasing their best work.

Objective
This course introduce students to method of estimating and budgeting for interior projects.
The following issues will be taught : types of estimates, methods of estimating, principles of
material specifications , budgeting etc. students will have to develop and understanding of
specifications and impacts on project costs.
