Number Properties
Divisibility & Primes
Integers are whole numbers, such as 0, 1, 2, and 3, that have no fractional part. Integers can be positive
(1, 2, 3...), negative (-1, -2, -3.. .), or the number 0.
Primes
A prime number is any positive integer larger
than 1 with exactly two factors: 1 and itself. In other words, a prime number has no factors other than
1 and itself
Note that the number 1 is not considered prime, as it has only one factor (itself). Thus, the first prime
number is 2, which is also the only even prime
Prime Factorization
if the problem states or assumes that a number is an integer, you may need to use prime
factorization
to solve the problem.
Be careful: even though you have no primes in the common area, the GCF is not 0 but 1.
Remainders
Dividend = Quotient x Divisor + Remainder
or Dividend = Multiple of Divisor + Remainder

Arranging Groups
The number of ways of arranging n distinct objects, if there are no restrictions, is nl (n
factorial).
Multiple Groups
So far, our discussion of combinatorics has revolved around two main themes: (1) making decisions and
(2) arranging groups. Difficult combinatorics questions will actually combine the two topics. In other
words, you may have to make multiple decisions, each of which will involve arranging different groups.
