Cox Cub Weekly News

March 2-13, 2015
Dr. Christine Clayman, Assistant Principal cclayman@interact.ccsd.net
Cub Cheers: Great job to our students from the International Club and last Friday, the students from Mrs. Blohms class, they
did our Friday Announcements and did fantastic! Congratulations to the following students for receiving the Cox Cub of the
Week award: Soren Harris, Kayla Jones, Carlos Nava-Lopez, Brian Gilgan, Lylah Hradisky, Jordan Lee,
Jaylise Stewart, Yoana Pamukchieva, Elijah Macklin, Jake Newman, Abby Lorren, Evan Hawkins, Nicholas Perkins,
Austin Lawrence, Quinton Black, Hayleigh Sarnessar, Chase Hartley, Eva Baker, Aubrey Pringle, Tyson Pina,
Robert Richey, Chaz Verdugo, Eva Miller, and Derick Lam! Congratulations to Ms. Hannah for receiving the Cox Teacher of
the Week award for 3/6/15!
Cookie Dough Orders Due Tomorrow: Parents, all proceeds gained from the cookie dough sales goes towards
helping us get more ipads, smartboards, general supplies (like construction paper, pencils/markers, glue, etc), and
leveled readers. The funds also help us maintain our current technology demands (like new mice and headphones
for our labs and/or new light bulbs or replacement projectors for our classrooms). We have a very small budget each year
allotted to us and balance that budget with efficiency and because of your gracious financial support each year, we are able
to always give our students what they need to succeed in school; thank you families!

Cookie dough orders are due tomorrow! 3/17/15

Beautiful 4th Grade Concert: Thank you to students, Mrs. Papanek, and to our staff and families for
all the hard work that went into the performance last Friday! It was an amazing concert and a big
thank you goes out to Mr. Willie Gray who donated the African drums from Kenya! Our students
played them brilliantly!
5th Grade Concert Next: Our Fifth Grade Students will be performing next, this Friday, 3/20/15, with a morning and
afternoon performance! We are looking forward to seeing them showcase their talents all that theyve done this year in music!
SAFETY ALERT (3rd Posting): Parents, please follow our campus lot procedures of NOT TURNING LEFT OUT
OF THE PARKING LOT during drop off and dismissal! Every day, we are having people drive INTO the EXIT,
turn left, and park over the sidewalk which prevents us from crossing our kids!
Wonderful Academic Fair Event: Thank you families for helping and attending our Academic Fair Night on 3/6/15. Our
school was busting at the seams with students and families! In case you missed it, our Honor Choir sang and sounded
beautiful! We even had a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog! The night, the book fair, and our activities were a huge
success! It was so nice seeing all my parents and students having fun outside of the school day!
How does DMC Rank? It was brought to my attention by some teachers and parents that according to the 2015
Niche Ranking, David M. Cox was ranked 100th (out of 337)in the Top Elementary Schools for Nevada, and 44th (out
of 217) in the Top Elementary ranking for just the Las Vegas Valley! Wow, are we proud of our teachers and kids or
what! The Niche rankings take into account, test scores, public input, and accountability reports (according to their website).
Infinite Campus (2nd Posting): Parents, secondary schools infinite campus semesters are very different from elementary
schools. Whereas secondary schools semester 1 grades end at semester 1, elementary schools continue to be averaged into
the current semester Semester 2 is NEVER beginning at zero. When youre looking at your childs infinite campus grades,
the Progress is the current grade your child is earning, Overall is an average of the current and semester 1. Dont forget
to refresh your infinite campus app and it wont always give you the latest grade posting.
Just a Reminder: An orange and red flyer went home last week with information that ALL parents (within the household)
must log into the parent portal site using the LONG activation key on the form. Yes, this means both parent
guardians, if listed on the registration form. If you dont have access to the internet in your household, please come
in and use our computers available in the front office. This is DIFFERENT than the Infinite Campus App for
obtaining grades and attendance on your cell phones.

Intermediate State Testing (2nd Posting): In April our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be taking the newly adopted
SBAC tests. These replaced the CRTs for the state. These tests are MANDATORY for all public educated students in
designated grades.
There are two exams; English Language Arts (reading) and Math. Then for fifth grade students, they are still
mandated to take the Science CRTs in May.
These tests are completely on-line and are very intensive in nature. Each ELA and Math test has 3 student
components and can take up to 10 hours to complete just one subject. We do not know what these exams will look
like, what content or expectations the exams will have for students, or the reality of completing a computerized
test.
Our teachers have been working diligently to stick to teaching the CORE Standards as mandated, theyve been
having the students complete practice tests on line, and have increased computer access time.
We do expect our scores to drop but we also know that our students will do their best and our teachers are preparing
them with great efforts. Its challenging to attempt to prepare students for a format of a test which we ourselves have
never experienced, seen, or been trained on. Regardless, we support our students and provide them with outstanding
teaching and instruction.

Calendar Notice: Spring Break is just around the cornerliterally! Dont forget that the school will be completely closed for
the week of March 30th -April 3rd for CCSDs Spring Break. Classes and our building will resume on Monday, April 6 th.
