Dr.

Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Benchmarks

Janet and I love the mountains of Colorado. The lush green

valleys and the majestic peaks are used throughout the Bible
as images of our mighty God. We have a favorite drive from
Colorado Springs west of Pikes Peak which takes us up to
a high elevation overlook of the Basin and the Collegiate
chain. These 14,000 feet-plus peaks are named after Ivy
League Universities. In the 1950s, some intrepid rangers
and mountain climbers scaled the summits and drove
bronze markers into the rock, marking the elevation. They
are called benchmarks.
This is a parable of our progress as a church ministry. As I announced last week,
our building debt has finally been paid. After years of the Great Recession, we
truly see a benchmark of Gods faithfulness and our churchs generosity. Over
nine years, our faithview has reminded us of the challenges but also the joy of
the journey. As in life, the scenery along the way is worth the trip. I praise God
for countless testimonies of those who have persevered, sacrificed and believed
as we have sought to Know Christ and make Him known in southwest Florida
and beyond. Multitudes will be in Heaven someday because you invested in
people.
We are now breathing the rarefied air that very few churches our size ever
experience. Our property is potentially valued at well over $100 million,
strategically located in the center of the county population and flexible in sacred
spaces. This is a 24/7 ministry. Good stewardship demands that we have
multiple functions in all rooms.
I have never climbed a 14,000 foot peak by foot, but have ridden the train to
the top of Pikes Peak. I quickly learned what happens when you do not drink
enough water. May we continue to drink of the Living Water of Jesus Christ,
the Fountain which never runs dry or disappoints. May we climb new heights
as we are pressing on the upward way, as the hymn says, praying as we are
onward bound. We must have the faith of old Caleb who refused to accept an
easy portion of his Canaan inheritance, but cried, Give me this hill country.
The giants were there, but God was with him because he wholly followed
the Lord (Joshua 14:12, 14). In David Platts words last week, he was a blank
check for God to cash.
*There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and
Sunday morning 11:00am worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!

Kidztown, VBS, the poor of Immokalee, Car Care, Living Christmas Trees,
assisted living centers, Helps Outreach, Florida Baptist Childrens Home, and
