I'd like you to tell me something about your home town. Is that okay?
Where do you come from?
I come from Hanoi, which is situated in the north of Vietnam. It is also called the heart of Vietnam.
Is it a city, a town or a village?
It is the second big city in my country after HCMC with over 3 million people. It is a centre of
culture, politics and trade. It is also a tourist destination which attracts millions of people visiting
each year.
What kind of jobs do people do in your area?
There are different kinds of jobs in my city. But most of the local people there do business. They sell
many items that support for local need as well as atrract visitors coming there, such as silk, watches,
clothes. And many other people open a small restaurant with many delicious dishes. If you wander
in 36 streets of Hanoi, you can see and enjoy it. It has a special flavour that you never forget after
enjoying.
What is the surrounding area like?
It was surrounded by many other cities and provinces such as Ha Tay, Bac Ninh, Nam Dinh, Thai
Nguyen.and among these are many important industry areas. For example, Nam Dinh is famous
for its weaving, Thai Nguyen famous for metallurgy industry.
Is it a pleasant place to live? Why?
Yes, I think so . If you live in my city, you will like the gentle pace of life. Every morning when I
wake up, I run around the Sword Lake and see many people from young to old are exercising, the
scenes there are very interesting to me. And most people far away from Hanoi all cannot forget the
quite cold weather in winter. Sometimes you have to wear 3-4 coats but still feel cold. Anyway, it
will be great to live there. And I am happy to be born and grow up in Hanoi.

Do you think pets are important in a family? Why (not)?
I like animals, especially dogs. When I was 5 years old, my family bought me a small dog. I did like
this gift . But unfortunately, 5 years later, it died and I didnt understand why, so at that time, I was
very upset. But now, luckily, I have another dog. It is a present from my parents on my 18 th birthday.
This dog looks like the one that I had in the past. He is small and lovely. So I call it puppy. Puppy
is quite intelligent. When I say something, it seems to understand and follow my command. It helps
my family a lot in keeping house, especially when my family are away from home. It is very
interesting that he likes food and eats a lot. Each meal, he can eat 2 full bowls of rice, so it looks a
little fat. And I take good care of himI dont want to lose him as I did in the past. Every
Saturday afternoon, I bathe for him and then, take him to the playground near my house where he
can play with me and with his other friends. I like the way he plays and the way he smiles. Since I
had it, I havent felt lonely any time. It is really important to meit is a good friend of mine.

Which animals are the most popular pets in your country?
Every one has his own liking in choosing a pet . Some like golden fishes, some like parrotsBut in
my country, especially the city where I am living, the most popular pets are dogs and cats. These
animals are very friendly to human and dogs are very helpful and loyal.
Do city and country dwellers treat animals differently?
Yes, I think there is some differences between the way city and country dwellers treats animals. In
the city, they buy it for their own purpose, such as keeping house or they are also used in the army.
So I think that they can afford to feed them and they are treated well. In the country, most pets are
let wander, they dont concern much about what they eat, where they sleep. And they rarely take
care of these pets.
To what extent are animals important to the economy of your country?
In my country, I think animals are necessary for the sake of economy. For example, dogs help to
keep house, protect our property from the bulglars. In the army, dogs act like a hero in helping the
policemen finding criminals.

What measures can we take to eliminate cruelty to animals?
I think the most important measure should be taken is to educate the awareness about loving animals
for people, especially for children. We need to know that the way we treat animals reflects our
characteristics, so it is very important. In addition, many animals are very helpful so we can take
advantage of them. These animals can corporate well with you if you treat them in a friendly way.
Are animals respected more now than in the past?
Yes, I think so. Nowadays, the development of technology leads to the appearance of many modern
tools, replacing animals, they consider animals as pets at home. Besides, some species of animals
are likely to die out. Therefore, there are many policies and organizations for protecting animals
against extinction set up. For example, in some European countries, governments will give heavy
fines to people who hunt animals. So I think animals are more respected than in the past.
Would there be less cruelty to animals if offenders were given prison sentences?
Yes,of course. If they were given prison sentences, animals would be safer and less endangered.

What can be done to prevent the rise in crime in modem society?
I think there are many measures that can be taken to prevent it. Firstly, security must be
strengthened, especially in public places. Secondly, governments should give the criminals heavy
punishment to deter other criminals. Thirdly, people should increase their awareness about crime to
be cautious.
Is community service a more effective form of punishment than imprisonment?
Yes, it is. Criminals given community service as punishment will feel that they are still helpful for
the society. In addition, they have chances to get in touch with other people outside the prison. They
will work hard and soon come back to their family. It is also good for the society.
How far is the threat of imprisonment a deterrent to criminals?

Imprisonment will make criminals boring. They may make friends with other dangerous criminals,
they may make plans to get out of this prison, etc. I think it is not effective to criminals. Community
service is a wiser choice.

1 When is your birthday?
I was born in 3rd May, 1988. I am going to be 19 years old in several months. I am very excited
about that day because it concides with the Independent day of Poland, a country I do like.
2 What do you do in your family when it's someone's birthday?
In someones birthday in my family, I often clean up my house, cook a delicious meal , buy a special
gift for that person and congratulate him in a surprising way.
3 What kinds of presents do you give each other?
Each person has his own way to choose presents. To my family, I often cook delicious meals to
make them surprised when it comes to their birthday. To my friends, I often buy things that are
necessary for their daily life as birthday gifts. Or sometimes, I present them roses, which are the
most popular choice of many people.
4 On what other occasions do you get together as a family?
There are many occassions that family can get together , especially Tet holiday. But in my family,
even a supper can be a good chance for members to gather, eat together, share our feelings about
many things together, which makes us closer.
5 What is your favorite family celebration?
My favorite family celebration is Tet holiday. In these days, we dont have to work or study but
spend time together. All of us stay at home, decorate my lovely house and make Chung cake
together. It is a very exciting moment.

The national festival or celebration widely known in my country is probably Tet holiday. However,
today I will not tell you about the festival before Tet holiday because maybe you hear about it too
many times. Id like to talk about the festivals after Tet holiday. After the traditional festival, people
often go to pagodas to wish for a good new year as well as wish for health of their family and
friends. Especially, if you are a person following Buddhism, you cannot miss Huong pagoda
festival, which attracts millions of people every year. It is considered to be the longest festival in the
world, which lasts 3 months. Visitors to Huong pagoda can enjoy many mountainous sights with
numerous shapes. If you have a tour guide, it will be excellent. When you enter the main cave of
Huong pagoda, you will travel on Hien street by boat. Interestingly, your trips will be shortened by
many nice songs of the boatman. There are many specialities in this area, so after the trip, people
often buy something as gifts for their family and friends. Plums are the most popular choice. My
friend says that if you go there in 9 years continuously, you will become.Many people may
think that it is like a superstition or something like that, but I believe in it. I often go there with my
parents annually and it is my fifth year. I think that Huong pagoda festival is a wonderful one.

1 How important is it to have national celebrations?
Well, I think that national celebrations play an important role in my country. They remind us to
continue and develop our own culture as well as keep the historic value alive. For example, the
Independent day helps us to know about the victory of our country and know how brave our
ancestors were to protect our country against invasion and to gain the Independence.
2 What positive effects do these festivals bring to a country?
I think these festivals bring many positive effects to a country. Firstly, they are acitivities of healthy
entertainment for all people. Secondly, through festivals, local people have chances to know more
about their country in terms of culture and history. Also, it is a chance for this nation to broadcast its
images. Especially, the nations color will be maintained and developed through festivals.
3 Are people as interested in these celebrations as they were fifty years ago?
Yes, of course. As time goes by, the value of these celebrations will always remain alive. And I think
the interest of people for these celebrations through generations dont reduce. They bring about good
spirits, excitement and chances to know more about their culture as well as history.

4 Do you think international sporting events bring nations together?
There is no other better event than sporting event where we can forget the power, I mean rich or
poor, as well as the discrimination about color of skin. In sporting events, the athletes from different
countries can share the happiness of victory only by a shakehand or a wind kiss. It is sporting events
that brings us the excitement and chances to be side by side.
5 Is it possible for smaller nations to compete with more powerful countries in international
sporting events?
Hmm when we mention sports, we should not compare the power between countries, about
whether this country is poor or rich. Vietnam, my country, is a poor and developed country but the
love for sports may even be greater than that of other countries. I think each country has its own
strength. China is famous for table tennis, America for golf, Russia for figure skating, etc.

Do countries always benefit financially when hosting international events such as the
Olympic Games (Sea Games)?
In my opinion, the most obvious benefit is the economy. For example, when becoming the host
country of internation event: Sea Games, Vietnam can take advantage of it to build its image among
international friends and express its potential tourism. Local residents and enterprises seem to
benefit most. One thing certain is that Vietnams position has been strengthened on international
areas.

I think that globalization is a a common playground for the peoples as well as countries all over the
world. And the benefits that it brings about is numerous. The most obvious benefit is the cheap price
of many consuming products. In addition, consumers have more options to choose the products they
like. However, globalization also brings some drawbacks to farmers and companies. Their products
often lose value and they have to compete with the overseas ones.
8 What problems might an immigrant face when moving to a new country?
There are many drawbacks when a person move to a new country. To some people, the most
difficulty is the barrier of language. It can take them several years to understand if they dont learn
them in advance. Others find culture and lifestyle really difficult to get used to. They consider the
new customs in that country a big culture shock. So I think that in order to overcome those huge
barriers, they should find out more about them before deciding to move to these country.
9 Is it possible for an immigrant to fully integrate into the society of their adopted country?
Yes, of course. There is an old saying that All the roads lead to Rome. An immigrant may
encounter many difficulties, but after a period of time, they may feel like the culture as well as the
new customs of that country. When they live in a new country, they find ways to adopt themselves.
For example, we can see an English man learn how to eat by chopsticks in a Vietnamese restaurant. I
think that culture is the interference and the learning each other.

- What are your hobbies?
Actually, I have many hobbies. I like collecting stamps, listening to music, reading books, going
shoppingBesides, I also like surfing the Internet and chatting with my friends.
- What benefits do you think you get from these activities?
These activities give me the interest, excitement as well as the feeling of relaxing. For example,
collecting stamps also give me chances to find out more about the geography and names of different
countries that Ive never known before.
- How do you usually spend your evenings?
Generally, in the evening, I often stay at home, watching television and then chatting with my
friends via the Internet. But sometimes, I go out with them for dinner and go to the theatre to see
action films. Actually, I think spending the evenings with friends outside is more interesting than

Yes, of course. I always hope that I have opportunities to travel abroad one day. I like to go to
England to see many famous places such as Big Ben, river Thames, etc. Especially, I do like to go to
Old Trafford stadium , where Man Utd, my favourite team, plays.
- Is there any activity you have always wanted to do but have never had the chance?
Yes, there is. I like skating on the streets but in my country, it seems to be very difficult for me to do.
Simply because streets in my country are very crowded and often have accidents. So I cant skate
on the streets. But I hope one day I will have chance to do.

Id like to talk about a kind of food that I enjoy preparing: Chung cake on a special occasion: Tet
holiday. I only have chance to make this tradditional cake because it takes much time to make,
especially in the normal days, when I have to go to university. The ingredients are quite simple, only
with rice, pork, green beans, addictives and some banana leaves, you can make it by yourself. After
washing rice, I mix it together with other ingredients and add enough additives. Then I cover it with
banana leaves in the square shape. Afterwards, I put it in a big cook of boiling water. You know, the
time for boiling this cake is very long, about 2-3 days. But I do like the moments of taking care of it
over the night. Actually, it is very interesting. And after 3 days, I fish it out. My family try it and all
like eating the cake I make. This is a meaningful cake in Tet holiday, because it is regarded as a
symbol of the land.

Yes, of course. Simply because these foods will remind us about our origin, about the history or

I think both traditional and modern foods have their own charateristics. Nowadays, there are more
and more modern cuisines to suit different kinds of people. Some are very easy and save time to
make. It is very convenient for modern people in a rapidly changing world, when they are very busy
with their work. However, when they have free time, they also make or eat traditional foods.
- Does traditional cooking have more benefits than modem cooking?
I dont think so. Modern cooking also has its own strength. Some modern foods are very delicious
and nutrious. I think it depends on how we make it.

- Describe what you think would be your ideal healthy diet.
Well, I personally think that an ideal healthy diet must contain sufficient nutrients and vitamins, and
the foods we eat must be diverse. For example, you can eat bread and drink milk or cereals in the
morning. In the afternoon and evening, you should eat rice, meat, fish, etc with enough content.
Dont eat foods having too much fat, because it may harm yourself.
- How healthy is your regular diet?
I always have 3 meals a day. People often say breakfast is the most important meal, so I never skip
it. In the morning, I often eat a lot to get energy, but for lunch and dinner, I eat less. I dont eat much
meat , but much vegetables, especially fruits, simply because they are very good for my health.
- To what extent are people healthier these days?
In a modern society as this, some people seem very busy with their work. They dont have much
time to cook and prepare their own meals. They often buy fastfood such as hamburger, pizza or
snacks instead, even though they sound very delicious. They are very unhealthful food. So I think
however busy they are, they should cook meals or eat healthful food with sufficient nutrients.

- What is the ideal body shape in your country?
That is an interesting question. Well, in my country, the ideal body shape is not thin and not fat. I
think it is the same in other countries. Women want to be taller than 1.6m and have a slender build,
while men like having muscles.
- How has the ideal body shape changed in recent years?
In the past, people often thought that a chuppy, plump and not-tall woman was beautiful. But
nowadays, this conception is not true for modern people. They want to be slender and taller so they
follow a strict diet. Sometimes, they skip meals in order to have an ideal shape, which is a bad habit.
Seriously, for example, a beauty queen died when she ate too little.
- Do you think this body shape will continue to be fashionable?
Yes, I think this body shape will be fashionable in a long time, simply because they consider it
beauty. Many young people will make effort to have this ideal shape.

Id like you to tell me something about your family. Is that okay?
- Is your family large or small?
Well, now I am living in a large family in Hanoi. My family has 6 members: my grandmother, my
parents, my aunt , my younger sister and me. Besides, I have and an uncle, but he lives in Ho Chi
Minh City, very far away from me.
- What do the other members of the family do?
My parents are working as accountants for Agribank, it is very convenient that their office is quite
near my house, about 1 km. My younger sister is studying at grade 9 at a secondary school and next
year, she will graduate. My aunt is an English teacher in a high school. She has been teaching for
almost 10 years.
- When was the last time all your family were together? What did you do?
When it comes to weekends or any celebrations, my family all are together. The last time we
gathered is last Sunday. On that day, we prepared a big cake for my younger sisters birthday. We
invited many people, both relatives and friends. We talked jokes and comedies. Actually, it was very
funny and interesting.
- What do you do as a family for special occasions like weddings or feasts?
On these occasions, I often help my family prepare for this. For example, when it comes to ones
wedding party, I help him to rent places or buy things necessary for that party. It is really interesting.
- Is there a member of your family you are especially close to? Why?
Uhmmy younger sister is very close to me. We often talk or share things together. I always give
her advice about studying or things relating to emotion. She and I have many things in common
such as the wearing style or favourite sports: basketball and swimming. I think that is why we are
much close.

I am a person who do like travelling. So whenever possible, I often take a trip or go on holiday with
my friends or my family.I remember a short trip recently I have taken with my friends last Thursday.
On that day, my English teacher was busy with a meeting at the department and she couldnt teach
us. I cannot describe how happy my classmates were at that time. It is understandable because our
lessons are often strained. We made a plan and decided to go to Sword Lake. Because there were not
vehicles so some of us went by motobike, others went by bus to go there. At Sword Lake, we took
many photographs together at many beautiful places around there, especially monument of Ly Thai
To and The Huc Bridge. Then we went to eat ice-creams on Trang Tien street. And the last thing we
did was go to the bookshops nearby. Many of my classmates felt very exciting because we could
find various kinds of books and stories that we seldom found in any other bookshop, especially we
could make bargains. Actually, this trip was memorable to me because after this trip, I could
understand more about my friends, especially the ones I have never talked with on class. I hope that
my class will have more chances to go and play together.

Tourism is one of the most important industries in my country. Nowadays, there are more and more
tourist destinations established. Many restaurants, hotels and entertainment centres and casinos are
also set up. The infrastructure is improved and expanded. Many famous landscapes are considered
cutural heritage. Lots of cities in my country are voted to be the ideal destination. For example,
Hanoi has been evaluated to be one of 6 best tourism cities in Asia recently. The number of tourists
to these cities has increased sharply.

Each region has its own things to attract tourists. Hanoi, my city, is not an exeption. When visitors
come to Hanoi, they often buy silk or long skirt made by silk as gifts for their family and friends.
Besides, they can enjoy a wide range of food, which has a special flavor. Maybe when Hanoi is
mentioned, people often think about the noodle or grilled rice of Vong village.
- Evaluate what type of tourists tourism brings to your area.
I think that most tourists tourism brings to Hanoi, my city, is the foreigners from different countries
all over the world. They come to my city to find out about the culture. They also want to visit many
popular places such as the temple of literature, the first university of Vietnam and the cradle of many
talents, or history museum. They want to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, gentle lifestyle and know
more about Hanoian, about how they fought bravely to gain the Independence.
- How has tourism changed your area compared with how it used to be?
- Evaluate how tourism is good for the economy of a country.
Tourism is nowadays considered a nonsmoke industry. It is also regarded as large Foreign currency
earnings for a country, simply because many foreign enterprises have a tendency to combine
business and researching market with tourism. And the development of tourism will lead to the
growth of other industries in that country. In addition, a nation will have chances to advertise its
images to international friends through tourism.

- Are you studying, or do you have a job?
I am working at Noibai airport in Hanoi, my city.
- What job do you do?
Actually, I am working as a flight attendant. I often serve passengers on plane with food and drink,
explain all things they want to know about the flight for them.
- Have you always been/done that?
I have been working for this airport for 3 years, just after my graduation from university. I feel very
lucky to be accepted to this airport.
- What made you choose that job?
I was much affected by the films about flight attendants on television. I like the uniform they wear,
the reactions they made in emergency cases, the ways they communicate with passengers
generally, I like all things relating to this job. So I chose flight attendant as my career.
- What are the things you like about it?
Actually, this job offer me an exciting and previleged lifestyle that allows me to travel and see the
world while being paid, as well as offering amazing free travel benefits. In addition, it also gives me
chances to practise my English ability when communicating with foreign passengers.
- What things don't you like about it?
One thing I dislike most is sometimes, the flight to overseas takes me too much days, even a month,
so I cannot visit my family.

Recently, I have seen many films but the one I like most is Accepted. It is an American film and
the director is Albert Williams. The main character of the film is a young man named Pete. After
graduating from high school, he applied forms to many universities for his further study but he was
not accepted. He didnt want to make his parents disappointed. Therefore, he made up a ghost
university. He advertised it on the Internet so that his parents believed him. Unfortunately, many
students who also had the same situation as Petes applied to this university and they were accepted
by only a click on that website. In addition, many universities nearby wanted to know more and
unite with this university. Pete was very surprising about that and he had no choice but to turn this
ghost university into reality. He was not only a student but also a principle. In that school, students
had opportunities to choose the subjects they liked to study. With the helping of many old friends, he
succeeded. In fact, that university received much support from many parents. After seeing this film,
I receive many meaning lessons in life. One of these is never give up hope. I like this film because
of its high humanity.

A good film is a combination of many factors. It must have a good team including: good director,
good actors and actress, good filmscript. In addition, that film must contain many thorny situations
to attract viewers. Some films should have beautiful sights and nice actors. I cannot affirm which
factor are the most important. Simply because a good film is like a bowl of soup. We cannot lack
sugar, salt or sauce. If a film lacks one of these factors, it will not be a good one.
- Evaluate the influence of violence in films on young people.
I can affirm that violence in films affect young people adversely. If they see too many violient films,
they are likely to imitate the violent actions from films in the real life. Seriously, these films may
change their behaviour or characteristics.
- Compare the films made in your country with Hollywood films.
Actually, Vietnam films are not as good as Hollywood films because of some drawbacks. It has just
got out of war for 30 years, while at the time, Hollywood has achieved many accomplishments with
hundreds of years of development with many films wining Oscar films, such as Gone with the
wind, Madagascar In addition, Hollywoods headquarter is located in the USA, a powerful
nation of economy and military. So the infrastructure is invested and a team of actors and actresses
is trained methodically. While in Vietnam, expenses for shooting a film are limited and we also have
encountered many difficulties. However, with its effort, Vietnam films are developing at a rapid
speed and gradually affirm a significant post on the international ground of films.
Music
- Compare modern music and traditional music in your country.
Nowadays, young generation has a tendency to leave traditional music behind and too absorbed in
modern music. But not all modern songs are good. Some have no value of culture and morality, they
copy and distort foreign songs. While traditional music often praises people, country and culture of
Vietnam. In addition, it also preserves, maintains and develops the love and pride of people for
country. I think traditional music will stabilize with time. However, we cannot neglect the diversity
of modern music with many forms. Some modern songs are very meaningful and inherit value of
traditional music.
- Speculate how music can bring people together.
Many people have the same favourite kind of music. They find out, discuss this kind of music with
others. Then they will know more about each other. And sometimes, they find many other things in
common beside music. So music makes people closer.
- Describe the most popular musicians/form of music in your country.

They seem to blend in the rymth of that song. Only a few years ago, there was only a rock band in
my country, but nowadays, many other rock bands appear. It proves that rock music is more and

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I often watch TV or surf the Internet to get news about the world outside.
Sometimes, I together with my friends go to the theatre to see action films.
How much time do you have each week for doing these things?
I often spend the whole evenings on doing these things everyday. But Ive been quite busy with my
study recently, so I spend less time for these, about 1-2 hours everyday.
Why do you like doing these activities?
Simply because they make me relaxed and feel comfortable. For example, when I go to see movies
with my friends, I have chances to chat with them, share interesting news about everything and
therefore pressure of study or stress will be relieved.
How did you start doing this activity at first?
Is there some other hobby or sport you would like to try? Why?
I do like skating and Id like to try it one day. When skating, you will feel relaxed and excited, or
sometimes, it gives you the strong feeling.This sport seems to be very new and not much popular in
my country. However, it is quite hard to try it in the narrow and crowded streets in my city.
How has the way people spend their free time changed over the years?
Family

Id like to talk about a person I admire most in my family: my brother. He is 4 years older than me.
He has just graduated from university and now accepted to a foreign company. He studies very well,
often in the top ten students of his class and I am much impressed by his excellent records when he
gives them to my parents. So, whenever I encounter difficult exercises, I ask him and he is always
willing to help me. Not only good at studying, he also plays well in sports, especially basketball. He
plays it every afternoon after leaving school. And now he is my basketball teacher. He teaches me
and sometimes I play with him and his friends, it is really interesting. We are quite close, but you
cannot believe in the past, we often had a row with each other. We debated and argued severely and
seemed to have nothing in common. But now everything has changed. And Im proud to have such a
brother like him.

Attitudes to family
In what ways have families in your country changed in recent years?
First, I can affirm that in recent years, the awareness of people about family has improved. Many
families have 1-2 children, while in the past, we usually see there were 5-6 children in a family.
However, nowadays, when living in a rapidly changing world, some people are too absorbed in the
busy life and standard of living has improved a lot, people have too little time to take care of their
family. Seriously, it can lead to the increase of divorce. As a result, the solidity of family seems to
gradually disappear.
Should husbands and wives have different roles within the family?
Yes, I think so. Both husbands and wives have their own strength. For example, husbands are often
the breadwinner of a family, they often work outside to support their wives and children, while
wives are more sensitive, gentle and careful, they will take good care of their family and are often
good housewives. They can give advice about the studying for children,etc. However, both of them
should share things together and help each other complete their duty. This will maintain the solidity
of a family.
Family or friends
Which are more important to you: your family or your friends?
I think both parents and family play and important part in each persons life. And I cannot decide
which is more important to me, actually. Whatever difficulties I encounter in life, I always receive
support from my family, and sometimes, they give me useful advice. However, not all things we can
share with our family. In many cases, only friends can help us to overcome problems, especially in
studying. Simply because they have the same direction of thinking as ours. In my opinion, in order
to have a happy and successful life, we need to combine both factors: family and friends.
What conflicts can arise between a persons family and a persons friends?
I myself think that there is no conflict between a persons family and a persons friends at all. They
all are the solid foundation for you, they support you to overcome all difficulties you encounter.
Generally, they are supplementary factors.
Family responsibilities
What responsibilities do parents have towards their children?
Parents must support their children a sufficient material life. Children should be allowed to go to
school and play with other children. They also need to take good care of them, supporting them a
comfortable mental life. I mean concernning about their study, their motion, what their kids like,
what they dislike, etc.
And what responsibilities do children have towards their parents?
Children need to obey what parents say. They should express their love for parents. At a tender age,
they can help their parents with small work in the family. UhmAs a student, Ive been trying my
best to gain a good result in studying to make my parents satisfied. I think nowadays, most parents
hope so from their children. That is the biggest present to them.

I am studying at Hanoi University for the first year.

What are you studying?
I am studying Finance and Banking at university. It is my major. But for the first year and a half,
weve been attending BEL course, which stands for Basic English Language, to improve our
English ability. You know, good knowledge of English is very important for us before turning to
our major taught in English.
Why did you choose that subject?
Because I want to be a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) in a foreign bank in the future. In addition,
I like to work with currencies. And I am also affected by my mother, she is working in a national
bank. She often tells me stories relating to finance and banking, how we use money in an effective
way, etc. So I decided to choose that major for my further study.
What do you find most interesting about your course?
In this course, I and my friends have many chances to practise English in class by chatting or
giving our own ideas about a problem. Besides, my university also organize many meetings for
students to exchange experiences about studying together. Actually, I learn many lessons after
these meetings. And thats all I find most interesting about your course.
What do you hope to do next?
In the next two terms, I continue to learn BEL course at university. But there are more subjects
like note-taking or debates in English, which sound very interesting. So I hope to do them well.
What are your ambitions for the future?
As I mention above, I want to work for a foreign bank in the future. But in order to achieve that
goal, now I must try my best in studying and then graduate from university with excellent records.
What are the advantages of studying instead of working?
When you study, you can receive advice and instructions from teachers. Also, you can exchange
with your friends about experiences or keys to succeed in studying. You have much time to
practise what you learn. However, when you work, you have no chance to make mistakes because
it may lead to job loss. And some jobs require competition, so you cannot hope to receive the help
from your collegues.

I am a person who do like travelling. So whenever possible, I often take a trip or go on holiday with
my friends or my family.I remember a short trip recently I have taken with my friends last Thursday.
On that day, my English teacher was busy with a meeting at the department and she couldnt teach
us. I cannot describe how happy my classmates were at that time. It is understandable because our
lessons are often strained. We made a plan and decided to go to Sword Lake. Because there were not
vehicles so some of us went by motobike, others went by bus to go there. At Sword Lake, we took
many photographs together at many beautiful places around there, especially monument of Ly Thai
To and The Huc Bridge. Then we went to eat ice-creams on Trang Tien street. And the last thing we
did was go to the bookshops nearby. Many of my classmates felt very exciting because we could
find various kinds of books and stories that we seldom found in any other bookshop, especially we
could make bargains. Actually, this trip was memorable to me because after this trip, I could
understand more about my friends, especially the ones I have never talked with on class. It is an
unforgettable trip. And I hope that my class will have more chances to go and play together.

What do you think a healthy diet consists of?
I myself think that a healthy diet must contain 4 sources of nutrients: protein, starch,fat and fibrous
matter. However, we should eat with a just enough amount. Dont eat too much fat, simply because
it is very harmful for your health. You can eat much vegetable and fruit instead, which is healthful
and helps you keep fit.
Which do people in your country prefer: traditional food or fast food such as hamburgers
or pizzas?
Nowadays, young people like to eat fastfood rather than traditional food, which is an alarming
problem. Maybe because they are too busy with their work and have too little time to prepare
traditional food which are sometimes complex to cook. In addition, some fast food such as
hamburgers or pizzas tastes very delicious but not very healthful for our health.
Learning about food
Do you think children should be taught about healthy diets and cooking at school? Why
(not)?
Yes, of course. Children are too small to know and understand all things in their lives. They want to
eat delicious dishes without concerning about whether they are good or bad for their health,
especially the long term effects of some kinds of food like fastfood. Or sometimes, parents are too
busy with their work to teach children about diets. So teaching children about healthy diets and
cooking at school is necessary and important. It will help children cook a meal for their family, even
they can be interested in cooking when they learn with their friends together.
At what age do you think children should be taught to cook?
At a tender age, children should be taught about cooking. When they are 5-7 years old, they can see
how parents cook. Or parents can tell children stories about the origin and importance of food, etc.
At a bigger age, they can help parents prepare meals or even cook a meal for family. When I was
small, my mother taught me strictly about cooking, and now, I can cook many meals for my family. I
do like to cook special meal for the coming tet holidays.

What can be done to prevent poor people in the world going hungry?
I myself think that many things can be done to help poor people. Raising funds for the poor is only a
short-sighted solution. The long term way we can do is provide them jobs that suit them or offer
them social security policies, which has come into existence in many countries like Germany or
France.
Should rich countries help poor countries with more than just food?
Yes, they should. Food is only a contemporary solution. The poor need something more than food.
Rich countries can invest money to build many factories near the areas where poor people are living,
opening job opportunities for the poor. Or they can establish training programs to help the poor get a
higher level of education.

Actually, I am working as a flight attendant. I often serve passengers on plane with food and drink,
explain all things they want to know about the flight for them.
How long have you been doing it?
I have been working for this airport for 3 years, just after my graduation from university. I feel very
lucky to be accepted to this airport.
Why did you choose to do that job?
I was much affected by the films about flight attendants on television. I like the uniform they wear,
the reactions they made in emergency cases, the ways they communicate with passengers
generally, I like all things relating to this job. So I chose flight attendant as my career.
What things do you enjoy about your work? Why?
Actually, this job offer me an exciting and previleged lifestyle that allows me to travel and see the

chances to practise my English ability when communicating with foreign passengers.
And what things dont you like? Why not?
One thing I dislike most is sometimes, the flight to overseas takes me too much days, even a month,

Things visitors buy depend on their own interest. Some buy silk, some buy long skirts , others buy
the ceramics for their friends and family.

In my country, young people like to buy clothes to wear simple because they like fashion. I think it
is the same in other countries. In addition, they like to enjoy many delicious dishes from different
regions.

Is it a good idea to save money? Why (not)?
Yes, of course. I think that saving money is necessary to use for other purposes in the future, such as
investing for your childrens education, buying houses or even travelling abroad. For example,
imagine you lived alone, if you were ill suddenly, you would use the money you had saved for
treatment. Therefore, it is very important.
Do you think that people are happier if they have money? Why (not)?
People often say that money cannot buy happiness but it can make our lives happier. It is true. If you
have more money, you can spend it to turn youre your dreams into reality. However, there are,
nowadays, lots of stories in the media about people who have won lots of money in the lottery and
realize that they are not happier as a result. Therefore, I think whether your life is happy or not
depends on the way you spend it. Too much money may have adverse effects on our lives.

What can shops do to make shopping more pleasant for their customers?
There are some ways that shops can do to satisfy their customers. First, they should update the items
they want to sell, especially clothes. No one wants to buy too old-fashioned clothes. Secondly, the
prices shops offer must be reasonable, I mean too not expensive. And lastly, the quality of these
items must be good. If all these things are done, customers will feel very pleasant to shop.
Do you think that in the future people will do most of their shopping using the Internet?
Why (not)?
I dont think people will use this modern device for shopping in the future for some reasons. Firstly,
shoppers cannot see or touch the items they want to buy directly. Secondly, they dont know the
material of items is good or bad, which is easy to see when touching. Finally, it is a little complex in
payment via Internet. If people want to buy an item, they must have credit card instead of paying
cash.

What do you do when you have a holiday?
When I have a holiday, I often go to beaches with my family. Or sometimes, we go to the mountains.
However, Id rather go to the beaches simply because I like swimming.
Where do you like to spend your holidays? Why?

Id like to go to beaches in the southern Vietnam, such as Nha Trang resort or Phu Quoc beach
because the water is very pure there. In addition, there are also many activities or sports on these
beaches, such as surfing, etc.
Can you describe a typical day in your holidays?
Why are holidays important to you?
As I mention above, I often spend holidays with my family. So holidays are chances for us to get
together and bring us closer. They also give us the relaxing as well as excitement.
If you could take a holiday anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I will choose Hawaii as a destination for my abroad holiday for some reasons. Firstly, the weather
there is cool all year round. Secondly, Hawaii has a beach with pure water, so even you can see
through the bottom. Thirdly, if you go there, you will enjoy the fresh air, you cannot see any dust at
all. Lastly, there are many sea foods and raw foods in Hawaii. Thats why Id like to go to Hawaii.

Id like to talk about my university where I am studying: Hanoi University, or Hanu, in short. I have
been studying there for just a few months, because this is my first year. There are only 1,000
students at my university. And one special thing is about 95% of students there are females. There is
only 1-2 male student in each class. I myself think that this university is an ideal environment to
study English. In fact, 2/3 teachers here are the foreigners, they instruct and explain us about lessons
very carefully. One thing I like is the open library with more than 10,000 books of all kinds:
business, law,health, etc. and 2 multimedia rooms with modern computers. Every Thursday
afternoon, we show a film in English at the main hall for all students. Actually, many students
including me find it effective to learn English by just seeing a film, a form of entertainment. Also,
students here are very active and most participate in activities , Sharing a smile,for example.
Actually, I feel very lucky when studying at this unversity.

Travelling benefits people a lot. It can help to broaden our minds and our knowledge. By travelling,

Do you think the growth of international tourism is a good thing? Why (not)?
Of course it is. Cultures from different nations can intergrate through tourism, opening many
opportunities for people to learn, exchange and improve not only material but also mental lives.

Earnings for this nation, which contributes to the development of economy.

How has tourism changed the way people in your country live?
How should tourists behave when they visit your country?
I myself think that Vietnam is a friendly country. However, it is a typical example of the orient
culture. We have some strict customs which are quite different from European countries. For
example, when meeting, foreigners often kiss together, even in public places and they think this
gesture is only a way to greet. But in my country, it is not. The Vietnamese concept that only
husband and wife can do this action. And it must be secrect. I think tourists from abroad should
consider these customs when visiting Vietnam.
Ways of travelling
What do you think is the best way for a tourist to travel if they want to learn about your
country?
Vietnam is a country with 54 different ethnics stretching widespread on all regions in Vietnam. Each
ethnic has its own culture. So, in order to understand fully about the culture of Vietnam, I think the
best way for tourists is to travel trans- Vietnam. In addition, tourists can enjoy beautiful landscapes
when travel through Vietnam, such as Sapa in the north, Hoi An in the middle or Phu Quoc in the
south.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by plane?
Travelling by plane will help you save lots of time instead of going by train or car. Especially, it is
also safe. According to a recent survey, plane is considered the safest form of transport. However, it
also brings you some drawbacks. When you travel by plane, you wont have chance to enjoy the
beautiful scenes outside as you can do when travelling by train. And the price of a ticket for
travelling by plane is quite expensive.

What sports are most popular in your country?
In fact, people in my coutnry are fond of diverse kinds of sports. Namely, football, volleyball,
badminton are played everyday by all age groups. However, I myself think football is the most
popular one. It is very normal to see thousands of Vietnamese people go to the stadium to support
their national team and dominant the streets after a successful match.
What sports and games did you most enjoy playing when you were a child?
When I was a child, I did enjoy swimming and did it very well when I was only 7. Also, I developed
the passionate in badminton 3 years later. Fortunately, I was able to participate the city U-16 team
and had a really incredible time there.
Do people take as much exercise as in the past?
In my opinion, people were affected severely by faster pace of life and much more pressure than
ever in the past. Also, modern technology has brought many facilities, and machines have reduced
the need for physical work considerably. So, I am afraid that most people dont have enough time or
motivation for exercises.
Why is exercise good for you?
Apparently, exercises help us to improve our health. Without exercises, we are very likely to catch
diseases and Im sure that nobody expects this results. More importantly, in my opinion, they inspire
us for our work, schooling and our lives. I warmly recommend everybody to spend even just a small
amount of time for exercises everyday.

Describe a special occasion when you had a really enjoyable meal.
You should say:

I want to talk about a special, delicious and unforgettable dinner with my brother. That day, as usual,
he came to pick me up for a dinner before an extra class. However, the class was not open at that day
and he decided to return home. In the end, we, however, decided to have dinner together and then
return home. He introduced me a small restaurant on the pavement instead of the big one right next
to it. There were only my brother and I at that time. We ordered 2 plates of roasted duck, a bowl of
ducks gravy mixed with bamboo shoot and lots of vermicelli. We had it respectively. It is the first
time we have had meal on the pavement since 1994, so I find it very special. The atmosphere there
was very fresh, quiet and comfortable compared to the atmosphere in big restaurants where often
noisy and dishes are not always as expected. Moreover, the dishes were tastefulf, and my brother
dubbed it the number one restaurant in Hanoi in terms of ducks. I ate so much and felt that I couldnt
have ducks anymore after at least a month. It was definitely an unforgettable time.

Attitudes to newspapers
In what ways are newspapers better for learning about the news than listening to the radio
or watching television?
We can see the images or video clips directly on the web news, they are muchy more updated than
radio and TV, which are usually edited and recorded. With tv, you have to wait for that programmes
broadcasting time. While with newspapers, we can read whenever we want and choose the kind of
information we like. If we are busy, we can read it another time, for example.
Do you think newspapers should be completely free to say whatever they want?
I dont think so, actually. Because newspapers are read by a lot of people. They can speak wrong
truth about private lives of many famous people, or wrong information can make people
misunderstand, or do wrong things, and so on. Especially in health aspect, what they say can harm,
offend or hurt lots of people. Some of newspapers are the mean of comunication between
government or important organization, so the information must be precise. You know, people are
very intelligent and know what they should read. So if not precise, newspapers can lose their
prestige.
Tastes in reading
What do people enjoy reading in your country?
I myself think that most people in my country like reading,because Vietnam is a country having the
tradition of studying and reading for thousands of years. And what they enjoy reading depends on
their own interests. Some like reading books, some like reading novels, others like reading
newspapers and magazines to get more information. Men enjoy reading sports news, while women
prefer fashion and beauty news.
Do you think it is important for people to read a lot? Why (not)?
yes, certainly.Reading is considered an effective tool to help you get information. Because most
cultural events, accomplishments, discoveries or even news about a nation and the world outside are
in books. Especially when you dont have chance to travel much, you should reading. Through
reading, you can broaden your mind, gain more useful knowledge and withdraw many experiences
from previous generations. Or sometimes, it can help you relax when you read jokes or funny
stories.
Public and private lives
What sort of stories do newspapers and magazines publish about well-known or famous
people in your country?
In fact, at present, there is no kind of newspaper or magazine like this in my country. But most of
them leave a small space to tell about autobiography of famous people. For example, Meeting at
weekend on The Labour, Memoirs on The Youth. But I think there should be an own magazine
and newspaper of famous people so young people can know about them, or they will find out
experiences from stars to become famous.
Do you think the media should be allowed to publish stories about the private lives of
public figures?
I firmly disagree with this idea. Because each person has his own freedom, and they dont want
people to know too much about them. Nowadays, there are some unreliable newspapers posting
stories of public figures, and they dont bother whether these stories are true or not, whether the
public figures allow or not.. Seriously, it may lead to the misunderstanding of the public about the
famous people.

Well, I myself think that whether life is safer or more dangerous depends on how we consider it and
what we can do about it. Our life will become safer if there is no longer theft or robbers or I mean
social evils, there shouldnt be too much properties. Besides, the law is applied and controlled
strictly and tightly. And all the social problems like unemployment or pollution must be solved.
After that, life is more stable and much safer. And if all these things are not concerned, it is likely
that life will become more dangerous, I am afraid.
Should people always avoid danger. or is it a good idea sometimes to take risks?
I think that we should avoid it as much as possible because we live not only for ourselves but also
for our family. For example, we have children or old parents to take care. Moreover, the finance
problem in their family is very important, so we should settle our lives and spare time for our
families, such as childrens education, etc.

What risks should people try to avoid?
Well, I personally think that we should try to avoid risks related to awareness or I mean attitude. For
example, if we drive carefully, we will avoid accidents. Or we can avoid and prevent social evils
such as drug addiction or robbery by having a healthy lifestyle. The most important thing here is our
behaviour to consider a problem.
Do you think people take fewer risks as they grow older? Why (not)?
Yes, I do. I think most young people love adventure, they are very quick in doing something because
of their curiosity, they want to discover new things without thinking. However, when people grow
older, they are more mature in their mind, get more experience and have the proper solution,so they
will consider matter carefully before doing something. So they will take fewer risks than young
people.

How important is it to have adventure in our lives?
Actually, I think adventure is very important because it can bring us many new and valuable
chances, especially business and exploration. If we dont try, we cant know what will happen. Also,
it brings us hope, joy and energy and we will have more interest in work as a result.
What do people learn about themselves from having adventures? .
Actually, people can benefit a lot from adventures. The most obvious benefit is knowledge we can
get, about culture of a country, for example. In addition,by adventuring, people will feel that they
grow much more than before. They will draw experience themselves. I mean that they can avoid bad
things or apply valuable ones with new chances. Besides, they can share it as experience by writing
them into diary for the generation such as their nieces or nephews, which is very useful for their next
generation.

How much time do you spend shopping every week?
When I have free time, I often go shopping with my friends about twice a week. But now I am very
busy for studying, I only go shopping about twice a month.

Yes, of course. Simply because it makes me relaxed. I like choosing and buying things for my
family, especially gifts for my friends when it comes to their birthday.
What is your favourite shop and why do you like it?
When I go shopping, I often go to supermarkets and fashion shops. I like to buy beautiful clothes to
wear simply because I think all people dont want to be old-fashioned. And in the supermarkets,
there is a wide range of goods with high quality and reasonable price, I dont have to bargain as in
the market.
What problems are there with shopping in your area?
Actually there are some problems. Some pickpockets often make use of public places, especially
crowding places to rob money. Or some clothing shops which sales off are overcrowded so it is hard
for you to choose and try items.

I like reading newspapers and magazines, especially magazines for students such as VTM, school
world or Vietnam student. However, the one I like most is BR magazine. In fact, it is an electronic
magazine for bloggers on the Internet. It was set up 3 months ago but actually, it is interesting. I read
it weekly because it saves time and money, I only click to this site and read. This magazine includes
many different parts and each part is very interesting, actually. It has new faces of the week
section, fashion section, weekly event section, music, and so on. But what I like most is music.
In this section, this magazine sorts out different kinds of music like jazz, pop, rock, classical, R&B
and always update hit songs. Behind this section is a small space to comment the feelings about
songsUhm, I like this electronic magazine because its content is not political at all, so very
suitable for young people. One thing I like is that its design is very special, I mean attractive and
modern. I think that anyone who visits this site will have the same thoughts as mine.

How has education changed in your country in the last ten years?
Many things have changed. First, the facilities for education have improved. Nowadays, more and
more schools are set up, many schools buy new tools to serve some subjectsexperiment such as
chemistry or physics that in the past, we didnt have. Second, the quality of teaching and learning
has also improved. Students have more chances to learn and broaden their knowledge. Many
students gain more international prizes than in the past. In some remote regions in my country, the
illiterate rate has declined drammatically.
Is a good education more important to a boy or a girl? Why ?
Both of them, of course, especially in this time. In the past, only boys are educated. But since
women liberation, females have the right to pursue their careers and interests. With good knowledge,
they can get good jobs and balance the equality in the society. A wife or a husband with good
education can share finance to educate children.

How well do you think schools prepare young people for working life?
I think this preparation is very important and necessary for young people, especially for their major
later when they are living in a competitive and rapidly changing world. It is also significant for other
skills such as team work, or some characters such as hardworking, patience and confidence. That is
a transition for working life because it will help you not suffer too much on your work, I mean
learning and part-time job.
Do you think schools should teach subjects like art, music and dancing? Why (not)?
Yes, of course. I think that basic knowledge is not really enough, actually. Our society is developing.
I mean that educational entertainment must be paid attention more because it is very useful and can
be applied on our work later to broaden our relationships.
Education and technology
How important is it for schools to have computers for their students?
I think computers with advanced programmes at schools help studentsstudying become easier.
Teachers can use computers to illustrate what they teach by using sounds and pictures, so students
will be more attracted and find more pleasure for studying. Besides, computers also make
communication between student-student, student-teacher,student-school easier.
Is the Internet a valuable educational tool?
Yes, of course. The Internet is a huge library contaning mankinds knowledge. We can find useful
information to serve our studying via the Internet. You know, knowledge on the Internet is not only
letters but also pictures or even sounds, so it may help you to easily understand. Besides, people can
overcome the distance to study online without going to schools or universities, which is very
convenient.

This dog looks like the one that I had in the past. He is small and lovely. So I call it puppy. Puppy
is quite intelligent. When I say something, it seems to understand and follow my command. It helps
my family a lot in keeping house, especially when my family are away from home. It is very
interesting that he likes food and eats a lot. Each meal, he can eat 2 full bowls of rice, so it looks a
little fat. And I take good care of himI dont want to lose him as I did in the past. Every
Saturday afternoon, I bathe for him and then, take him to the playground near my house where he

Why do you think people like to travel to different places in their free time?
An old saying says that the more you travel, the more you learn. When people travel to different
places, their knowledge will be broadened. They have chances to find out and discover new lands,
culture or history of these countries. By travelling, they can also make friends with people from
different regions in the world.So I think thats why people like to travel to different places in their
free time.
How do you see tourism changing in your country in the future?
Conserving the countryside

Why is it important to protect the countryside?
It is important. First, I think it is economic purposem because in Vietnam, countryside is where a lot
of food to serve our demand is grown here. Second reason is that countryside show the tradition and
custom, I mean the typical character for every region as well as the development of this country.
In what ways is the countryside in danger in your country?
Countryside is not as dangerous as city, I think so, because the knowledge of them are not very high,
actually. So there are not too many social evils like city as robber, prostitution, and so on. And
another aspect I think danger in countryside is the old-fashioned view of people in this region, or I
mean the superstition, which affects a lot in their minds.
Historic buildings and monuments
Why are historic buildings and monuments important to a city?
I think they are greatly valuable in culture, making important posts of a countrys history. For
example, in Hanoi, Vietnam, the house no 48 on Hang Ngang street was where Uncle Ho, the great
leader of my country, wrote Independence paper. Besides, they also remind us to think about the
merit of previous generation. Especially, the appearance of these historic buildings or monuments
contribute to the beauty of a city or country.
Is it better to keep old buildings, or build new modern ones?
To be honest, it is difficult for me to decide which is better. I think the old building is the symbol of
the country demonstrating its development. The old quarters in my city, for example. They attract
lots of tourists even though they are very old. They shows customs and how people built it in the
past, so they made us remember our past and ancestors. So I think old building should be kept and
preserved. About modern buildings, I think they are also important, because they are the face of
modern and advanced life, showing the talent as well as the architecture of building.

What do people do in your town in their free time?
In my country, when people have free time, they often take part in different kinds of activities. Some
people like staying at home to read books, watch TV, sleep or chat with their friends on the Internet.
Some like going out for shopping or gathering friends. Others like playing sports, such as
swimming, basketball or aerobics to keep fit.
Where can they go out for entertainment, or to enjoy themselves?
In the past, people often went to parks. But nowadays, they prefer going to big commercial centres
for entertaining like Vincom Tower or Trang Tien Plazza, where there are many exciting games or
many goods for shopping. In addition, they can go to the theatre to enjoy movies.
Which do you prefer: eating in restaurants or eating at home?
Well, it is difficult for me to decide which one is more favourite. When I eat in a restaurant, I can
enjoy many delicious dishes which are difficult to make by myself. Also, I can enjoy the welcome
serving at that restaurant. And eating at home, in my opinion, is much cheaper, and I can eat
combined with watching TV at the same time. Moreover, I can know exactly what ingredients I use
and whether the food is healthful or not, while in the restaurant, it is hard for us to see.
Which are the best places to eat out?
I dont know which are the best places to eat out but when I was at school, I used to go out for eating
with my friends every weekend. We often went and discovered new places to eat, especially places
near schools or universities. They are small restaurants for students with many delicious dishes with
suitable prices.

Advertising
Some people think advertising can be dangerous . Would you agree or disagree with
that ?
I think it is only true to some extent, actually. Some ads are not good, immoral and uncultural,
they can affect people adversely when they are advertised widespread. But anyway, advertising
is necessary for enterprises to broadcast their products and consumers have more chances to
know about to goods they want to buy. Generally, whether it is dangerous or not depends on how
people use it to serve their own purposes.
Do you think government should use law to protect people from advertising ?
Yes, I do. Because nowadays, there are some improper advertisements, which are too violient
and sexy, it is not suitable and not cultural for people. These ads is a waste of time and have no
moral. Besides, too much advertising may make the buyers confused and mistreated,
unfortunately, it is sometimes uncontrollable. So I suppose that government should use law for
the sake of the consumers.
How will people be able to resist advertising in the future ?
Well , lets consider the values of our society . What effect does advertising have on our
values , do you think?
Some people think that adverts give people unrealistic expectations Would you agree ?
When deciding to advertise something, the main goal of enterprises is the profit. So they can use
any kind of advertising to attract customers. For example, they may rent a famous actor, actress
or MC to help them advertise. They use nice words to talk about their products without
bothering about whether these words are correct or not. Sometimes, the products are not realistic
and they cannot be applied in daily life. So sometimes, customers feel that they are cheated.
What do you think about the way advertisers target children ?
Nowadays, advertises spend much money as well as strength on advertising for children. They
know exactly what children want and take advantage of it. They use lively pictures and sounds
or even fairy tales to attract children. Advertising for Dutch Lady milk is an example. One way
they often do is advertise at schools, where students can use their products for free. They also
offer students scholarships together with products they make. I think the ways advertisers target
children are very various, actually.

How did you come here today?
Actually, I often go by bus, a popular public transport in my country, which is quite cheap and
convenient. But today, I come here by motorbike, because I dont want to wait for a bus, which takes
too much my time.
What is public transport like in your town?
Well, there are not much as public transports in my country as in others. And the most popular
people in my country often use is bus, which is quite cheap and convenient. However, you know,
the development of society leads to the appearance of some social evils such as robbery, especially
pickpocket. Unfortunately, it often occurs on the bus. In addition, some bus driver nowadays drive
very carelessly. In fact, radio and TV have posted information or stories about accidents caused by
bus recently. That is why bus is not as safe as in the past.
How do you think it could be improved?
There are many ways to improve the public transport in my country. Firstly, we should improve bus
system with international standard with modern facilities,etc to ensure the safety for the customers.
Secondly, government should consider building special priority lanes for public transport like bus or
train. Last but not least is that we should raise our awareness about this issue, dont eat or throw
rubbish on the bus, for example. If anyone breaks the law, he must be fined heavily.
Do you think people should use public transport more? Why (not)?
Public transport helps to solve the traffic jams in many cities, especially the big one, when the
population is booming at an alarmed level. One thing certainly is using public transport will be
much safer than private vehicles. So I myself think that if all the improvement I mention above is
done, people should use public transport more and more because the benefits it brings about.

Family
Is your family large or small?
My family is a medium one. It has 5 members: my parents, my younger sister, my aunt and me.
What do the other members of the family do?
My parents are now working for a bank near my house, so it is very convenient for them to go to
their office. My aunt is an English teacher for 10 years. She is teaching at a high school, but it is
very far from my house. And my younger sister is studying at grade 9, she is going to graduate from
secondary school in several months.
When was the last time all your family were together? What did you do?
When it comes to weekends or any celebrations, my family all are together. The last time we
gathered is last Sunday. On that day, we prepared a big cake for my younger sisters birthday. We
invited many people, both relatives and friends. We talked jokes and comedies. Actually, it was very
funny and interesting.
What do you do as a family for special occasions like weddings or feasts?
On these occasions, I often help my family prepare for this. For example, when it comes to ones
wedding party, I help him to rent places or buy things necessary for that party. It is really interesting.
Is there a member of your family you are especially close to? Why?
Uhmmy younger sister is very close to me. We often talk or share things together. I always give
her advice about studying or things relating to emotion. She and I have many things in common
such as the wearing style or favourite sports: basketball and swimming. I think that is why we are
much close.

Does your country have a flourishing film industry?
Recently, I have seen many films but the one I like most is Accepted. It is an American film and
the director is Albert Williams. The main character of the film is a young man named Pete. After
graduating from high school, he applied forms to many universities for his further study but he was
not accepted. He didnt want to make his parents disappointed. Therefore, he made up a ghost
university. He advertised it on the Internet so that his parents believed him. Unfortunately, many
students who also had the same situation as Petes applied to this university and they were accepted
by only a click on that website. In addition, many universities nearby wanted to know more and
unite with this university. Pete was very surprising about that and he had no choice but to turn this
ghost university into reality. He was not only a student but also a principle. In that school, students
had opportunities to choose the subjects they liked to study. With the helping of many old friends, he
succeeded. In fact, that university received much support from many parents. After seeing this film,
I receive many meaning lessons in life. One of these is never give up hope. I like this film because
of its high humanity.

Part 1: introduction and interview _Friends
1. How much time do you spend with friends?
Every day I have to go to university, therefore I spend almost time with my friends. We study
together, talk gossip and whenever having free time we go shopping together.
2. What kinds of things do you like to do with your friends?
I'd like to spend hours chatting with my best friends. We usually meet each other in Chic caf, a nice
and quiet place. Not only each member's studying but her problems as well are told to the other ones
and by this way we help to relax. They are always behind me, as a result every thing done with them
makes me happy.
3. What kinds of work or studies do your friends do?
My group has 7 people. Most of them are students, who study different subjects in various
universities such as: Institute for International Relations, Law University, Foreign Trade University,
etc. The rest person is an exception, who is a model and the miss photo of Vietnam. She is preparing
to study abroad. All of us like charity work and learning foreign languages.
4. What does being a good friend mean to you?
Every one has friends but being a good friend has a special meaning to anyone. Only good friends
help me whenever I need them, when I encounter obstacles and difficulties. In my opinion, a good
friend is actually significant to me, which cannot be replaced by anything.
Part 2: Individual long turn.
Describe a party you went to which you enjoyed.

In the modern life, having free time to take part in a party is really difficult, however whenever
possible I and my friends try to hold a small party to meet each other and to relax. The party I
enjoyed most took place 1 year ago when we prepared to finish our study at high school. It was hold
at my mother's restaurant. We spent one day to go shopping although the restaurant has more than
300 dishes. And we bought food we like best. I'd like to introduce to you but regret that I don't know
what it called in English.
I and my best friends invited not only our friends in other classes but our teachers in 3 years as well.
The party began at 10a.m and lasted 4 hours. All people wanted to cook by themselves instead of
eating dishes prepared by my cooks. Of course, this task was more difficult than we had ever
imagined and a big mess was created immediately after we had finished cooking. Many reasons
make me remember this party, first of all, it is our fare welled party. Moreover it was very funny. At
the end of the party, all of us cried because of getting partly sad and partly happy. The happiest
memory I have ever had.

What kinds of social events are most popular in your country?
Raising funds for charity is one of our most popular events in my country. Vietnam is a poor
country, 80% of population has very low income, just under 10$ a day, therefore, programs to raise
money is significantly necessary. By these ways, we can help other people and devote a bit to the
development of our country.
What are the differences between the social events that older and younger people
enjoy?
Not mentioning to charity, sometimes there are some differences between old and young generation.
Young people care entertainment events more than the old, and I think it is an easily understandable
thing because of the distinction between 2 generations. The old like programs concerning history,
tradition or traditional music, whereas we neglect them. Perhaps raising funds for charity is our mere
common.
Do you think it is a good idea for colleagues at work to spend time socially together?
In my opinion, there is no reason for colleagues at work to spend time socially together. It is a good
way to make friends. The more friends you have the happier person you are. Moreover, going
shopping or having a meal together is very useful to know more about your colleagues, by this way
you find a suitable behavior to each person.
What changes have there been recently in social life in your country?
Social life has changed much in recent years. We seem to be busier and spend less time taking care
of family. 50 years ago, the life was more simple and quieter and safer but nowadays human has to
face risks caused by ourselves such as traffic accidents, dangerous diseases, environmental
pollution, etc.
Would you agree that technology can have negative effects on the way people spend
their leisure time?
Everything has its own advantages as well as disadvantages, and modern technology is not an
exception. We can see that not mentioning to positive side; it has caused many negative effects on
human. Before in free time people used to visit friends or relations, but now they spend hours at the
computer to play game or to chat with strangers. The technology sometimes badly affects our
lifestyles and our health.

1. What journeys do you make everyday?
I often go to university by bus everyday. It takes me about half an hour. But sometimes, when I am
busy, I go by motorbike because it will take me less time. I think it is more convenient to travel by
motorbike than bus .
2. What do you do during journeys?
During journeys, I often read short stories or listen to music. It makes me feel relaxed and the
journeys will also be shortened. And it is very interesting when I can make friends with many people
when traveling.
3. Do you sometimes have problems with transport?
Of course , It takes me hours and hours to wait for a bus. Or sometimes, the bus is too crowded and
people often hustle to get on bus. Unfortunately, bus seems to be unreliable because nowadays there
are many pickpockets on bus so, well I think that fewer people go by bus than in the past
4. What is your favourite form of transport?
I like train best. It is also a popular means of transport in my country, which is not expensive. When
I travel by train, I can enjoy the scenes outside. It is quite exciting , in fact .Besides I also do like
traveling by plane, even though it is rather expensive.

In daily life, I make many conversations, but the one I remember most and very important to me is
when I registered to volunteer in APEC summit several months ago. This conversation took place in
my university and before that, I felt very nervous. I was interviewed by a representative of Ministry
of Foreign Affairs. He asked me many questions in English what I knew about APEC and then he
gave me some suppositional situations to see how quickly I reacted. One of these situations is that I
had to guide a diplomatic corps of America. It is not allowed to take photos. But there was a
paparazzi following closely and wanted to photograph & interview them. What would you do? It is
only a simple example. After the interview, he said that I was accepted. I cannot describe how happy
I was at that time. I think that this conversation is a chance for me to practise my English ability as
well as my reaction. I also want to contribute a small part to APEC summit, building the image of
the host country. So it is very important to me. I can feel that this conversation brought us something
new and strange. Although time goes by, this interview stays forever in my mind. I hope that I will
have many chances to attend these interviews like this.

A. What differences are there when using channels of communication (face-to-face,
telephone, writing)?
Each channel of communication has its own characteristics. For example, when you telephone,
you cannot see the other person, you only hear his/her voice. When you face to face a person,
you can see his body language or feelings directly. Or when you write, you have much time to
think about what you want to say, but sometimes it is difficult to explain what you mean if the
person doesnt understand.
B. To what extent do you think films and TV influence how people communicate with each
other?
I think that films and TV have large influence on the way people communicate. People often
imitate the way actors or actresses do in a film. Furthermore, they help people understand more
and deeper others feelings because on films, we can see both thoughts of 2 people, while in real
life, it is very difficult to see. One thing very important is that they teach us how to behave well
with other people surrounding.
C. Do you think that there are differences in the way men and women communicate?
I think that women are much cleverer than men in communication because they are relatively
sensitive. However, they are sometimes limited by some moral rules in their own culture. For
example, in oriental countries, women are usually reserved and seldom take part in dynamic
social communication. On the contrary, men often communicate with people freely without
concerning about being tied by any rules in the society.
D. Do you agree that education has a strong and positive effect on peoples ability to
communicate effectively?
Yes, I totally agree. I think that if we are taught how to communicate effectively, we will have
good ability to find out what others are thinking, what we should do and what we shouldnt do.
Moreover , people with communicative skills can show their dominance in the society. So
educating people about communication is very necessary.
E. What impact do you think the growth of technology might have on communication in
the future?
I think that the growth of technology brings us both positive and negative impact on
communication in the future. On the one hand, it will help human communicate quicker and
more comfortable. For example, the most popular means of communications, mobile phone and
computer, will be added more functions so people can talk without server with internet from far
away distance. Or with mobile phone, we can not only call but also see others faces on the
screen. On the other hand, we may be isolated from talking or seeing each other. So I personally
think that we shouldnt too depend on technology.

Part 1:
What sports are most popular in your country?
In fact, people in my country are fond of diverse kinds of sport. Namely, football, volleyball, badminton are played
everyday by all age group. (Numerous TV programs are dedicated to sport events everyday). I myself think football is the
most popular one. It is very normal to see thousands of Vietnamese people go to the stadium to support their national
team and dominant the streets after a successful match.
What sports and games did you most enjoy playing when you were a child?
It can be said with certainty that I have the flair of sport. I find it at a very young age. I enjoy swimming and do it very well
when I was only 7. Also, I developed the passionate in badminton 3 years later. Fortunately, I was able to participate the
city U-16 team and have had a really incredible time there.
Do people take as much exercise as in the past?
In my opinion, people were affected severely by faster pace of life and much more pressure than ever in the past. Also,
modern technology has brought many facilities and machines have reduced the need for physical work considerably. So,
Im afraid that most people not have enough time or tendency for exercises.
Why is exercise good for you?
Apparently, exercises help us to improve our health. Without exercises, we are very likely to catch diseases and Im sure
that nobody expects this result. More importantly, exercises, in my opinion, inspire us for our works, schoolings and lives.
I warmly recommend everybody to spend even just a small amount of time for exercises everyday.
