Indiana House approves

sweeping religious freedom bill
LGBT rights advocates have
sharply criticized the measure
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The Indiana House of Representatives on March 23
approved a bill that critics contend would allow people
and business owners to ignore laws based on their
religious beliefs.
The Indianapolis Star reported Senate Bill 101

GAY
DIPLOMATS

passed in the Republican-controlled chamber by a 6331 vote margin. The newspaper noted 26 Democrats
and ve Republicans voted against the controversial
measure that would prohibit a government entity
from substantially burdening a persons exercise
of religion, even if the burden results from a rule of
general applicability.
The Indiana Senate last month approved a bill similar
to SB 101 that is based on the Religious Freedom and
Restoration Act, a federal law that took eect in 1993.
Gov. Mike Pence has said he would sign SB 101 into law.
The legislation, SB 101, is about respecting and

reassuring Hoosiers that their religious freedoms are

intact, he said in a statement. I strongly support the
legislation and applaud the members of the General
Assembly for their work on this important issue. I look
forward to signing the bill when it reaches my desk.
LGBT advocates and other critics of the measure
say it goes far beyond the Religious Freedom and
Restoration Act because it does not contain what one
source described to the Washington Blade as a clear
standard of what constitutes a religious belief.

Hyattsville councilmember to head Free State Legal Project

Nightlife advocate Skip Coburn dies at 70

Veteran was executive director of D.C. Nightlife Association
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Dick Edward Skip Coburn, a retired Air Force
lieutenant colonel who worked for the past 12 years
as executive director of the D.C. Nightlife Association
where hes credited with improving relations between
bar and nightclub owners and regulators who oversee
the citys booming nightlife businesses, died March 18
at Howard University Hospital. He was 70.
His close friend Marge Francese said the cause
of death was complications associated with double
pneumonia.
SKIP COBURN
It is a loss for the city, said Francese. He would
help anyone in the world. There was nobody I
knew who would help so many people.
Frederick Harwood, founder and president of the D.C. Nightlife Association,
said Coburns desire to help people and the city he loved prompted him to bring
about dramatic change for the better in the way bars and nightclubs interact
with the citys Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, D.C. police, and
citizens who live near nightlife businesses.
Its a devastating loss for nightlife in Washington, Harwood said. He was such
an advocate, and an advocate in the best sense that he developed relationships
on both sides. He was a neighborhood activist.
He went out of his way to develop a relationship with the chief of police,
with many of the police commanders, with the Fire Department, and with the
building inspectors, Harwood said. He was so dedicated to his job. People
understood how committed he was to nightlife.
Added Harwood: The whole atmosphere has changed because of the work
that Skip did to bring the regulatory authorities and the police and the owners
together to understand each others needs.
Coburn, who identied as bisexual, was born in Richmond, Va., but grew up on
military bases in the U.S. and Europe as the child of a military family, Francese said.
A resume Coburn prepared shortly before his death says he graduated from
the Paris-American High School in Paris in 1964 and received a bachelors degree
in political science from the University of Colorado in 1967.
The resume says he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1967 as a commissioned
second lieutenant and was stationed in multiple locations in the U.S., Europe,
and Asia until the time of his retirement in 1990 as a lieutenant colonel.
A biographical write-up of his military career says he ew airborne
reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War, served as an instructor and
manager at the Defense Intelligence College at Bolling Air Force Base in D.C., and
later was assigned to the Pentagon.
After retiring from active duty service Coburn served as a civilian operations
ocer for the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Squadron at Bolling Air Force
Base from 1990 to 1998, his career write-up says.
Francese said Coburn joined the sta of then-D.C. Councilmember Sharon
Ambrose (D-Ward 8) in 1998, where he served as a researcher until the time of
Ambroses retirement in 2002.
Harwood said Coburns impact on the citys nightlife scene began shortly after
he started in his job as executive director of the D.C. Nightlife Association in 2002.
Others who knew Coburn said he provided important advice and assistance to
the citys gay bars and nightclubs on regulatory matters.
The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration was deeply saddened
to learn of the loss of Skip Coburn, said ABRA Director Fred Moosally in a
statement to the Washington Blade. Skip was passionate about nightlife
issues in the District. He played a signicant role in representing the nightlife
community before the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and was dedicated to
helping promote public safety in the District.
Local nightlife advocate and business columnist Mark Lee called Coburn a tireless
and dedicated advocate for D.C. nightlife as well as for community businesses.

Free State Legal Project last week announced Hyattsville City Councilmember Patrick
Paschall will become the organizations new executive director.
Paschall will come to the Baltimore-based LGBT legal organization from the National
LGBTQ Task Force where he was senior policy council. Paschall has also worked for the
National Center for Transgender Equality, Lambda Legal and other LGBT advocacy groups.
I am deeply honored and incredibly excited to be selected for such an important
position at such a pivotal time in the LGBTQ rights movement both nationally and in
Maryland, said Paschall in a press release. We know all too well that low-income LGBTQ
Marylanders, and especially LGBTQ people of color, face signicant economic and social
barriers to accessing health care, housing, employment, public accommodations, and
basic things like identity documents.
Leading such an eective, life-saving organization into a future of greater success
and deeper impact will be the opportunity of a lifetime, he added. I couldnt be more
grateful to the Board for trusting my leadership at such a critical time in our state.
Paschall will succeed Aaron Merki, the co-founder of Free State Legal who stepped
down last October.

Phase 1 reopening postponed

The Capitol Hill lesbian bar Phase 1, which has been closed for renovation since early
January was scheduled to reopen on March 20, according to an ad that the club placed
in the Jan. 19 issue of Metro Weekly.
But customers attempting to go to Phase 1 on Friday night discovered that the door
was locked and noticed through a window on the door that the bar was dark and empty,
adding to the mystery surrounding its future.
No message was posted on the door or the building saying why it did not open as
announced in the ad or whether a new reopening date has been set.
Phase 1 owner Allen Carroll couldnt immediately be reached to nd out when he
plans to reopen the bar.
Phase 1 rst opened for business in 1970. In recent years it has billed itself as D.C.s
oldest continuously operating gay bar and the nations oldest lesbian bar.
The club announced on Jan. 8 on its Facebook page that it had closed temporarily as
we make some upgrades. But rumors surfaced that Phase 1 might not reopen when
its employees told friends their jobs had been terminated at the time the temporary
closing was announced.
I know nothing about why the Phase didnt reopen on Friday, said Ellis Lane, who
has worked for nearly 10 years as a part-time DJ at the bar up until the time it closed in
January. We were not told anything, Ellis told the Blade.

Latino GLBT History Project elects new officers

The board of directors of D.C.s Latino GLBT History Project announced on March 23
that it has elected veteran Latino activist Jos L. Plaza to succeed David Prez as the
organizations new president.
Born in Guanajuato, Mexico, Jos L. Plaza is the proud son of migrant farm workers, a
statement released by the organization says. He is a doctoral candidate at the University
of Southern California, earned a [masters degree] in counseling from California State
University, Long Beach, and his BA from San Diego State University.
The statement says Plaza is the National Director for Latino Engagement for Enroll
America and is an associate board member for the Latin American Youth Center. He
joined the Latino GLBT History Project board of directors in 2013 and co-chaired the 7th
Annual D.C. Latino Pride event in 2013, the statement says.
The board re-elected transgender activist Alexa Elizabeth Rodrguez as the groups
vice president, the statement says. A native of El Salvador, Rodrguez founded Mi Nueva
Familia, a working group for people living with HIV and trans women in her home
country. Upon her arrival in the U.S. in 2009 she continued her work as an advocate
for HIV prevention programs, becoming involved with La Clinica del Pueblo in D.C. and
Casa de Maryland. She has served on the Latino GLBT History Project board since 2013.
Immigrant rights, LGBT and people with disabilities activist David Pazmio was elected
secretary of the Latino GLBT History Project, the groups statement says. He holds a BA
degree in government and masters degree in policy and plans to pursue a law degree.
Existing members of the board who will continue in that role include Cristela Solorrio
Ruz, May Sifuentes, Jennifer Sanchez, Eric Perez, David Prez and Jos Gutierrez, the
groups founder and a longtime LGBT and Latino community activist.

May wins Stein Club endorsement in Ward 8 race

Bowser-backed candidate is
competing in special election
for D.C. Council seat
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Community activist LaRuby May on
Tuesday won the endorsement of the
Gertrude Stein Democratic Club in her
race for the Ward 8 D.C. Council seat on
the ballot in an April 28 special election.
The seat became vacant in November
following the death of Council member
and former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry.
May, a Democrat who is being backed
by Mayor Muriel Bowser, received the
required 60 percent of the vote needed
for a Stein Club endorsement by a onevote margin while nishing far ahead of
six other candidates competing with her
for the endorsement.
Im excited and blessed and very
grateful for the support of the Gertrude
Stein Democrats, she said after the vote
was announced.
The vote came after an hour-long

candidates forum held at Bethlehem

Baptist Church in Anacostia, which was
attended by about 200 people. The forum
was moderated by Channel 7 News
correspondent Sam Ford who asked
the candidates questions on a variety of
LGBT-related subjects.
The voting was restricted to the 60 club
members who attended the forum. May
received 36 votes, which came to exactly
60 percent of the vote of the members in
attendance.
Sheila Bunn, former chief of sta for D.C.
Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes
Norton and a high-level staer for former
Mayor Vincent Gray, nished second
with 13 votes. Veteran D.C. voting rights
advocate Eugene Kinlow came in third place
with six votes followed by businessman
and community activist Marion Christopher
Barry, the son of the former mayor and
councilmember whose seat hes seeking to
ll, who received 3 votes.
Longtime community activist Sandra
Seegars received 1 vote. Candidates
Juahar Abraham and Stuart Anderson
didnt receive any votes. One ballot was
cast for no endorsement.

I was not expecting such a full house,

said Stein Club President Earl Fowlkes,
referring to the packed church meeting
hall where the forum was held. We had
a good representation of Ward 8 and
others from across the city, he said. I
was very pleased.
Fowlkes said the candidates presented
themselves well on LGBT issues.
I think we have a lot of support for
LGBT rights in Ward 8, he said. I know
that LaRuby May will be a good City
Council member.
He said he was especially pleased over the
warm welcome the club received from Rev.
James Coats, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist
Church, who greeted forum participants
in opening remarks in which he expressed
support for the LGBT community.
Several of Stein Club members who
work for the Bowser administration,
including gay activist Christopher Dyer,
attended the forum wearing May stickers
or t-shirts, indicating to some members
that the mayors support for May likely
helped her win the club endorsement.
May served as the Ward 8 coordinator
for Bowsers mayoral campaign last

year. She currently serves as executive

director of Vision of Victory Community
Development
Corporation,
which
carries out economic and community
development projects in Ward 8.
In responding to questions by Ford
during the forum Tuesday night, May
appeared knowledgeable on LGBT
related issues and showed a depth of
understanding greater than the other
candidates, according to Stein Club
members who support her.
Gay activist and longtime Ward 8
community leader Phil Pannell said hes
remaining neutral in the Ward 8 election
because hes organizing two other candidate
forums for the race. But Pannell, a Stein
Club member, said May won the clubs
endorsement, among other things, because
she out organized the other candidates.
She is working hard, took the Stein
Club
endorsement
seriously,
and
recruited her supporters to join the club,
Pannell said. She is also knowledgeable
about LGBT issues as evidence by her
presentation last night.

Wife of murdered D.C. lawyer appeals for publics help

Police reveal person
of interest is female
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
The widow of 30-year-old attorney David
Messerschmitt, who was found stabbed
to death on Feb. 10 in a downtown D.C.
hotel room, made an emotional appeal
on Wednesday for members of the public
to come forward with information to help
police solve the crime.
At a news conference outside of
D.C. police headquarters, Kim Vuong,
struggling to hold back tears, urged
anyone who may have information about
the murder to immediately contact police.
The case has attracted the attention of
LGBT activists who say it has similarities
to so-called pickup murders of which gay
men have become victims in D.C. and
other cities.
I know there are people out there
who could bring justice to David and
me, to our families and friends, and to
everyone in Washington who deserves
to live in safety, said Vuong, who was
accompanied by members of her family
and friends.
She also called on the public to carefully
observe a video taken from security

cameras at the Donovan Hotel, where

Messerschmitt had checked into a room,
showing someone police have described as
a person of interest in the case.
That video captures the image of the
person of interest, she said. Please ask
yourself if you recognize that individual.
And, if you recognize that individual, or
even think you may recognize that person,
immediately call the Metropolitan Police
Department at 202-727-9099.
Lt. Anthony Haythe, the lead homicide
detective working on the case, told
reporters at the news conference after
Vuong and the others left without taking
questions, that police now believe the
person of interest is a female.
Up until the time of the news
conference, police have said they were
uncertain whether the person shown in
the video, who wore a hooded jacket, was
a man or a woman.
All information that weve obtained
indicates that it is a woman, Haythe said.
But he declined to answer nearly all
other questions raised by reporters,
including whether Messerschmitt may
have met his killer through one of
many online hookup sites that LGBT
activists say have been the means through
which gay men have met people who
have robbed, assaulted, and sometimes
killed them.

When asked by a reporter if the police

departments Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit
has been consulted in the Messerschmitt
case, Haythe said, I cannot conrm
anything that has anything to do with Mr.
Messerschmitts lifestyle.
Asked why Messerschmitt checked into
a hotel room when he lived with his wife
in D.C., Haythe said, Thats information
pertinent to our investigation that I
cannot reveal.
LGBT activists following the case say they
have no specic information to indicate
Messerschmitt was targeted because of his
sexual orientation whether gay or straight.
The activists, including Paul Tupper, chair
of Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence,
a D.C.-based group, have said their heart
goes out to Messerschmitts wife and other
family members.
Their main concern, Tupper and other
activists said, was that others in the
community, including members of the LGBT
community, could be in danger if a killer
targeting certain people remains at large.
I would hope that if the police
have any evidence that the person
David met was through a sex line
gay or straight the public would be
informed quickly so they can be aware
of any danger to them, said gay
activist Peter Rosenstein.
When asked if investigators have gone

through Messerschmitts cell phone

records to see if that provides leads in
the case, Haythe said, Those are matters
that well handle in an investigative
standpoint. Were dealing with that, and
I cant reveal any information involving
what were going through in our
investigation.
In the days following the discovery of
Messerschmitts body, a police adavit in
support of a search warrant for the hotel
room said police found Messerschmitt
suering from stab wounds to the back
and that his body was found lying on the
oor with credit cards and his wallet on
the oor near the body.
The affidavit also said police found
one or more condoms, lubricant, and
an enema in the room along with
other items, including a computer and
cell phone.
In one day, I lost the most important
person in my life and the man I loved
so much, Vuong said at the news
conference. And I have no answers.
She added, I am here because I need
people to know about David. My husband
was the gentlest and kindest hearted
person I knew. He worked hard at
everything. He was a brilliant lawyer who
people trusted. He was deeply dedicated
to his family and spent a great deal of
time traveling to be with them.

Marine goes on trial for trans murder

OLONGAPO CITY, Philippines The trial of a U.S. Marine who allegedly killed
a transgender Philippine woman began on March 23.
The Associated Press reported that U.S. security personnel escorted a
handcued Marine Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton into a courtroom in Olongapo
City, which is northwest of the Philippine capital of Manila.
Prosecutors contend that Pemberton murdered Laude, 26, after meeting her
at an Olongapo City nightclub on Oct. 11, 2014, while the USS Peleliu was docked
at the nearby Subic Bay Freeport on the Philippines main island of Luzon.
Laudes naked body was later found in a motel bathroom.
The AP reported the rst person to testify during Pembertons trial was a hotel
worker who identied him as the man seen with Laude shortly before she was
found dead.
Laudes death sparked widespread outrage among Philippine LGBT rights
advocates.
Pemberton faces life in prison if found guilty of Laudes murder.

Gay Miss. man brutally attacked

CORINTH, Miss. Police in a northern Mississippi town are investigating
whether a gay man who was attacked on March 20 is the victim of a hate crime.
The Associated Press reported the Corinth Police Department said James
David Scott confronted Devin Norman in a Walmart parking lot over a Facebook
post that was apparently sexual in nature.
Ralph Dance, chief of the Corinth Police Department, told the news wire that
Scott threw Norman to the ground before kicking him several times in the face.
Norman posted a picture of his injuries including a cheekbone fracture and
swollen eyes onto his Facebook page.
WREG, a Memphis television station, reported that Scott has admitted
attacking Norman.
Mississippis hate crimes law does not include LGBT-specic protections, but
advocates continue to urge the Corinth Police Department to prosecute the
case as such. A petition posted to the White Houses website has more than 900
signatures.

Equality Virginia dinner to celebrate marriage

RICHMOND, Va. Equality Virginia will commemorate the legalization of
same-sex marriage in the commonwealth at its annual dinner that will take
place at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on April 18.
The dinner will take place slightly more than six months after gays and lesbians
began to legally exchange vows in Virginia.
Tim Bostic and Tony London of Norfolk and Carol Schall and Mary Townley
of Chestereld, who are among the same-sex couples who challenged Virginias
constitutional amendment that denes marriage as between a man and a
woman, are among those who are expected to attend the Equality Virginia
Commonwealth Dinner.
This is the time to recognize the work that so many Virginians have put into
this ght for decades, some of whom never got to see this day, said Equality
Virginia Executive Director James Parrish in a press release. We will honor
everybodys hard work and celebrate this important time in history by throwing
one big wedding reception for Virginia.

By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
In an apparent rst, a federal court
has upheld the interpretation of nondiscrimination language on the basis
of gender in Obamacare as prohibiting
anti-transgender bias in the health care
system.
U.S. District Judge Susan Richard
Nelson, an Obama appointee on the
U.S. District Court for the District of
Minnesota, on March 16 ruled that
Section 1557 of the Aordable Care Act
allows individuals to sue a health care
facility if they experience discrimination
based on their gender identity.
The order denies a request from
Fairview Southdale Hospital in Minnesota
to throw out a lawsuit led on behalf of
Jakob Tiarnan Rumble, a young trans
man who alleges he was badly mistreated
while hospitalized because of his gender
identity.
No
regulations
exist
on
the
interpretation of Section 1557, and the
hospital alleges a 2012 opinion letter
from HHS arming trans people are
protected under the law isnt binding. The
court nonetheless determines the letter
carries weight as it looks for guidance on
the statute.
Here, the court nds the OCRs
interpretation
of
Section
1557
persuasively concludes that Section 1557
protects plaintis, like Rumble, who
allege discrimination based on gender
identity, Nelson writes in the 63-page
decision.
The order could have widespread
implications across the country for trans
people who feel theyve experienced
discrimination in the health care system
and wish to seek restitution.
Harper Jean Tobin, policy director for
the National Center for Transgender
Equality, said in a blog post the court
order makes clear trans people have
options if they face discrimination.
This case illustrates the need for
transgender people to stand up for their
rights in health care settings, Tobin said.
Having recently experienced a stay in a
hospital myself, I know that no matter
who you are, if you are trans the fear
of mistreatment in medical settings is
constant. When it happens, trans people
need to know that, no matter where you
live, theres something you can do.
The lawsuit, known as Rumble v.
Fairview Health Services, was led

in June 2014 by Gender Justice, a

Minnesota-based advocacy group. In
addition to making claims on the basis
of the Aordable Care Act, the lawsuit
also alleges the hospital violated the
Minnesota Human Rights Act. The court
also allows the litigation to move forward
on the basis of alleged discrimination
under this statute.
According to the order, Rumble went to
the hospital in June 2013 because he had
a fever of more than 100 degrees. Even
though indicated to the clerk he was male,
the hospital labeled him as female, and
he was given an F wristband because
his drivers license incorrectly identied
him as such and hes listed in the hospital
computers as female.
When the physician, Dr. Randall
Steinman, came to see him after an
unusually long four to ve-and-a-half hour
waiting period, the physician allegedly
asked Rumble in hostile manner [w]ho
are you having sex with, [m]en, women,
or both? and whether hed ever had sex
with objects. The questioning, Rumble
alleges, seemed more of an attempt to
embarrass him rather than treat him.
During an examination, Steinman
allegedly handled Rumbles genitals in a
rough manner, causing the patient to cry
out in pain. The doctor allegedly stated he
couldnt tell what was going on because
of the male hormones.
As Steinman continued to jab at
Rumbles genitals, the patient asked him
to stop, but the doctor continued until his
mother said something. When Steinman
nally stopped, he allegedly said he
couldnt determine the problem because
because your mom made me stop the
exam, then left the room without further
explanation.
Rumble was eventually admitted to the
hospital, where he alleges he continued
to face mistreatment for the six days that
followed. When he received the bill for his
stay, it indicated no insurance payments
were made and he owed the full amount,
stating, THE DIAGNOSIS IS INCONSISTENT
WITH THE PATIENTS GENDER. According
to the order, Rumble alleges his ultimate
diagnoses were conditions that aect
people of any gender.
The hospital had urged the court to
throw out on the case on the basis that
Rumble failed to allege that he sought
medical care from a health service
receiving federal funds and didnt present

Gay U.S. ambassadors take part in Newseum panel

Men described as
true leaders
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Cardinal Nicols de Jess Lpez
Rodrguez of the Archdiocese of Santo
Domingo during a June 26, 2013, press
conference referred to the openly gay man
that President Obama had nominated to
become the next U.S. ambassador to the
Dominican Republic as a faggot.
The U.S. Senate a few months later
unanimously conrmed James Wally
Brewsters nomination in spite of continued
opposition from Lpez and other
prominent Dominican religious leaders.
Brewster who is a former Human
Rights Campaign board member on
Tuesday became emotional during a
panel at the Newseum in downtown
Washington as he discussed the
opposition that he and his husband,
Bob Satawake, continue to face in the
predominantly Roman Catholic country.
We knew that thats not who the
Dominican people were as a whole,
and I think that was important to us,
said Brewster with Satawake sitting
by his side. Bob and I will celebrate 27
years together this year and from that
perspective we both have a very strong
Christian belief and so nobody is going to
ever tell me that God doesnt love me.
Brewster and the ve other openly
gay U.S. ambassadors took part in a
panel organized by HRC, the Harvey Milk
Foundation and GLIFAA, a group of LGBT
Foreign Service members
Randy Berry, the special U.S. envoy to
promote global LGBT rights, and Dennis
and Judy Shepard, parents of Matthew
Shepard, the gay Wyoming college
student who was beaten to death in 1998,
were among the hundreds of people who
attended the historic event.
Stuart Milk, the gay nephew of
assassinated San Francisco Supervisor
Harvey Milk and president of the Harvey
Milk Foundation, moderated the panel.
Its very important to have out and open
and visible service, said Stuart Milk. We
have to be at the table. We have to have
LGBT people visible, even in dicult places.
U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius,
who is a founding member of GLIFAA,
during the panel noted a high school
student in the Vietnamese city of Hue a
few weeks ago asked him if he was gay
and whether he came here with your
husband and with your child. The boy
proceeded to ask him in front of his
classmates whether he felt comfortable
in his country.
Osius who assumed his post late last
year told the student that gay members

of the Foreign Service once lost their

security clearances if they acknowledged
their sexual orientation.
Weve made quite a lot of progress
in that time, said Osius, who is raising
a three-week-old daughter and toddleraged son with his husband, Clayton Bond.
When I got o the plane in Vietnam, ours
was an American family: A black man, a
white man and a brown child. And we
were received so warmly in Vietnam.
U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra
James Costos said he and his partner
received great accommodation when
they arrived in the country and were
treated graciously.
Costos during the panel noted the
U.S. Embassy in Madrid initially did not
do too much with Spanish LGBT rights
advocates because same-sex couples
were already able to legally marry and the
country had already adopted sweeping
legal protections. He stressed anti-LGBT
employment discrimination and bullying
remain serious problems in the country
especially outside of the Spanish
capital and Barcelona in spite of laws
that are designed to combat them.
What we can do through our messaging
is give a sense of hope, said Costos.
U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Rufus
Giord noted the Nordic country in 1989
became the rst nation in the world to
legally recognize same-sex couples.
In spite of this historic milestone and
Denmarks reputation as a tolerant country,
Giord said his ambassadorship has
generated interest among the Danish people.
When you are a United States
ambassador, who you are as a person

matters, he said. Everything you say

matters and your personal story matters.
Its not just about negotiating trade
deals and the standard diplomacy,
added Giord. Its who you are too.
U.S. Ambassador to Australia John
Berry, who is the former director of
the Oce of Personnel Management,
acknowledged Frank Kameny at the
beginning of his remarks.
John Berry during the panel also noted
Tori Johnson, the gay manager of the
Lindt Chocolate Shop in Sydney who died
last December during a 16-hour stando,
lived with his partner of 14 years. The
former OPM director noted the attack has
reinvigorated the Australian movement
in support of marriage rights for samesex couples because the country did not
recognize Johnsons relationship.
John Berry also compared Johnson to
Mark Bingham, the gay man who fought
back against the hijackers of United Flight
93 on Sept. 11, 2001, because he lost his
life while trying to get the gun away from
the man who stormed his caf.
He is a hero, said John Berry. He is a
hero to the LGBT community.
U.S. Ambassador to the Organization
for Security and Cooperation in Europe
Daniel Baer who married his husband,
Brian Walsh, last August in Vienna
has been among the most high prole
American voices against Russia in the
ongoing war between Ukraine and
Russian separatists in the eastern part of
the former Soviet republic.
Baer during the panel acknowledged
LGBT rights eorts are backsliding in
a number of places around the world.

These include bills in Kyrgyzstan and other

former Soviet republics seeking to ban socalled gay propaganda that are similar to
the Russian law that took eect in 2013.
We keep pushing, said Baer. We keep
doing what were doing.

Ambassadors wonderful
representatives of
the LGBT community
Several social media users noted after
the event the six U.S. ambassadors who
took part in it are all gay white men.
Stuart Milk described them as
wonderful representatives of the
LGBT community. HRC President Chad
Grin further categorized the men as
trailblazers.
Today there is no clearer sign of
our progress in 2015 than the fact that
there is not one, not two, but six openly
gay ambassadors serving our country
overseas, said Grin at the beginning of
the panel. Theyre dear friends. Theyre
true leaders.
Brewster told the Washington Blade
during a brief interview after the panel
that it makes him proud to see Dominican
LGBT rights advocates and their straight
allies stand behind him and Satawake
when they face criticism.
We have to just lead and that was our
objective in being who we are and thats
being a couple that love each other, said
Brewster. We dont look at ourselves
as being any dierent than any other
couple. We just want to do great work for
the Dominican people.

Puerto Rico government to no longer defend marriage ban

Federal appeals court
considering case from
U.S. commonwealth
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
The Puerto Rican government on March 20
announced it will no longer defend the U.S.
commonwealths same-sex marriage ban.
Because of sexual orientation, Puerto
Rico has denied rights that others enjoy,
said Justice Minister Csar Miranda
during a press conference in San Juan.
This is not correct.
The announcement coincides with
a brief Gov. Alejandro Garca Padillas
administration led with the 1st U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston, which
is hearing a lawsuit against the islands
same-sex marriage ban.
To the extent that commonwealth
law does not aord homosexual couples
the same rights and entitlements
that heterosexual couples enjoy, the
commonwealth recognizes that equal

any interest suciently important or
compelling to justify the dierentiated
treatment aorded so far to plaintis.
Garca had previously defended the gay
nuptials prohibition in the case that two
women from San Juan led in March 2014.
Four additional same-sex couples,
along with Lambda Legal and Puerto
Rico Para Tod@s, a Puerto Rican LGBT
advocacy group, joined the lawsuit three
months later.
The government of Puerto Rico nally
recognizes that denying marriage to
LGBTT people is discriminatory and cannot
be justied, said Omar Gonzalez-Pagan
of Lambda Legal, which is representing
the ve same-sex couples in the lawsuit
against the U.S. commonwealths samesex marriage ban. Same-sex partners,
LGBTT people and their families are
part of the rich Puerto Rican culture and
society. The actions taken on this day
complete the constitutional promises of
justices and equality for LGBTT people in
Puerto Rico.
New York City Council Speaker
Melissa Mark-Viverito, who was born

in Puerto Rico, and also applauded the

governments announcement.
We applaud and thank Gov. Alejandro
Garca Padilla and his administration for
choosing to be on the right side of history
in terms of marriage equality, she said
in a statement she released with LGBT
members of the New York City Council.
His change of position is heartening.
Puerto Rican LGBT families should be
aorded the same rights, responsibilities
and respect as the rest of the families.
Gay Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin
also welcomed Garcas announcement.
My thanks to Gov. Alejandro Garca
Padilla for demonstrating that he is a
leader who is not afraid of the challenges
of the present, said Martin. Today is
a great day for my island, my heart is
jumping out of my chest. How proud I
am to live in a country of equality. I love
Puerto Rico.
Wanda Roln, a Puerto Rican pastor
who is a vocal opponent of marriage
rights for same-sex couples, told a local
radio station that God would punish the
island if Garcas administration allows
gays and lesbians to legally marry.

Gay group to close if Supreme Court rules for marriage

Freedom to Marry hopes
high court will put it
out of business
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Evan Wolfson, president of the New
York-based Freedom to Marry, this week
said hes hoping his groups work as
one of the lead advocates for marriage
equality will no longer be needed if the
U.S. Supreme Court rules that gays and
lesbians couples have a constitutional
right to marry.
In an interview published on March 23
by the Hungton Post, Wolfson noted
that the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled
to hear oral arguments on April 28 in
four cases that are expected to prompt a
decision on whether same-sex marriage
should be legal in all 50 states. The court
is expected to hand down a decision on
the matter in June.
Assuming we do win the long-sought,
hard-fought victory in June, Freedom
to Marry this campaign will have
achieved its mission, the Hungton Post
quoted Wolfson as saying. And we will
end the campaign. We will close down, he
told the online publication in an interview.
He added in the interview, Just roughly

Freedom to Marry President EVAN WOLFSON this week said his organization will shut down if
the U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of gay nuptials.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY

speaking, assuming we win in June, I

would expect that a year from now, Ill be
out of a job.
Wolfson, an attorney, founded and
became executive director of Freedom
to Marry in 2003 at a time when public
opinion polls showed that marriage
equality had little support among the
general public. The following year close
to a dozen states voted to pass laws or
amend their constitutions to ban samesex marriage.
Wolfson has been credited with
mapping a long-range strategy for what

he called changing the hearts and minds

of the American people on the subject
by demonstrating how gay and lesbian
couples like opposite-sex couples
should enjoy the right to marry to protect
their families.
Since he launched Freedom to Marry,
37 states and D.C. have legalized samesex marriage.
Wolfson told the Hungton Post that
marriage equality advocates working on
the pending U.S. Supreme Court cases are
not taking anything for granted and were
moving ahead 100 percent full steam

to present the best possible arguments

before the high court.
But if the court rules in favor of
marriage equality he said Freedom to
Marry would begin a strategic winddown process that would include
archiving its voluminous records, sharing
information with movement colleagues,
and preparing an oral history.
Once its all completed, we will close
down, he told the Hungton Post.
When asked by the Washington Blade
what he plans to do if Freedom to Marry
closes about a year from now, as he
hopes it will, Wolfson said he hasnt had
time to consider such plans.
Though I am asked constantly whats
next, I am not giving it any real thought,
let alone exploring whats out there, until
after we knock on wood win in June,
he told the Blade.
If the high court renders a favorable
decision, he said, I will give thought to
what jobs I might want to do or causes
I might want to take on, what positions I
might be able to get.
Wolfson noted hes been working on
LGBT rights causes, including marriage
equality, for over 30 years.
I need to gure out who I am when
I am not Mr. Marriage, he said. And I
dont want to get distracted by thinking
about that now, or worrying that I might
be unemployed.

Texas Republican prominent same-sex marriage opponent

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

The conservative rebrand later in the

day discussed his presidential aspirations
during a speech at Liberty University in
Lynchburg, Va.
Cruz, 44, broadly reiterated his vocal
opposition to marriage rights for samesex couples.
Instead of a federal government that
works to undermine our values, imagine a
federal government that works to defend
the sanctity of human life and to uphold
the sacrament of marriage, he said.
Cruz during his speech also accused
the federal government of waging an
assault on our religious liberty.
Imagine a federal government that
stands for the First Amendment rights of
every American, he said.

Im a constitutionalist
The Canadian-born Cruz is the rst

candidate from either party to formally

declare their presidential aspirations.
The Texas Republican last October said
he still plans to introduce a proposed
constitutional amendment that would
ban judges from overturning state
marriage laws.
Im a constitutionalist, Cruz told
the Washington Blade in January after
President Obamas State of the Union
address. From the beginning of this
country, marriage has been a question of
the states, and we should not have the
federal government, or unelected judges,
setting aside the policy judgment of the
elected legislatures and imposing their
own instead.
Cruz last month reintroduced his bill
that would block the federal government
from recognizing the marriages of gays
and lesbians who live in states that have
yet to extend marriage rights to samesex couples. The conservative rebrand
during this years Conservative Political

Action Conference was among those who

repeatedly highlighted his opposition to
gay nuptials.
Cruz last week introduced a resolution
alongside U.S. Sen. James Lankford
(R-Okla.) that urges Congress to kill the
Human Rights Amendment Act of 2014
that would protect LGBT students from
discrimination at religious schools in
D.C. The two Republican senators also
introduced a separate resolution that
urges federal lawmakers to strike down
another D.C. law that bans employers in
the nations capital from discriminating
against employees based on their
decision to have an abortion and undergo
other reproductive health procedures.
The purpose of the Constitution
is, as Thomas Jeerson put it, is to
serve as chains to bind the mischief of
government, said Cruz during his Liberty
University speech.
Gregory T. Angelo, executive director
of Log Cabin Republicans, on Sunday

told the Washington Blade he was not

surprised to learn that Cruz will run for
president.
Its long been known that Cruz would
be pursuing the presidency, said Angelo.
Considering the transparency of his
ambitions, its no surprise hes the rst of
the GOP eld to make it ocial.
John Fluharty, the openly gay executive
director of the Delaware Republican Party,
also weighed in on Cruzs announcement
and the senators decision to highlight his
opposition to marriage rights for same-sex
couples in his Liberty University speech.
The reality is that the Republican Party
rank-and-le are supporting marriage
equality in numbers and ways that show
the party is headed in a pro-freedom
direction, Fluharty told the Blade. The
issues of job creation, growing the
economy and reforming education are
important to all families and we win
when we focus on these issues and dont
cloud the discussion.

Gaming convention threatens to pull out of Hoosier State

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

Were extremely disappointed that 63

members of the Indiana House suddenly
believe we need a new law to protect
religious freedom thats been enshrined
in our Constitution for centuries, said
Freedom Indiana, a group that opposes SB
101, in a statement. We all know Senate
Bill 101 is about creating a license for some
Hoosiers to discriminate against others in
the name of faith, and we all understand
that the laws unintended consequences
could harm LGBT Hoosiers, undercut our
economic growth and put our children at
risk.
Lambda Legal and the National LGBTQ
Task Force also urged Pence to veto the
measure.
Lawmakers in Indiana have chosen
to ignore an unprecedented chorus
of voices speaking out in opposition
to this draconian bill, said Rea Carey,
executive director of the National LGBTQ
Task Force, in a statement. The truth is,
this new law will undoubtedly damage
Indianas reputation as a welcoming
place. Instead, the state will now be
viewed as completely out-of-step and a
place where it isnt good to live and do
business.
Organizers of Gen Con, which is the
largest gaming convention in the world,
have threatened to move the annual
event out of Indianapolis if Pence signs
SB 101 into law.
Legislation that could allow for refusal
of service or discrimination against our

Indiana Gov. MIKE PENCE has said he plans

to sign a bill that critics contend would allow
people and businesses to ignore laws based
on their religious beliefs.

attendees will have a direct negative

impact on the states economy, and
will factor into our decision-making on
hosting the convention in the state of
Indiana in future years, wrote Gen Con
CEO Adrian Swartout in a letter to Pence,
according to the Indianapolis Star.
SB 101 is among the dozens of Religious
Freedom Restoration Acts and other antiLGBT bills that have been introduced in
state legislatures in recent months.
The Oklahoma Religious Freedom
Act that would have barred the state
from requiring someone to take part in
a marriage ceremony that conicts with

their religious beliefs is among the eight

anti-LGBT proposals that were introduced
during the 2015 legislative session.
A Mississippi law that critics contend
allows business owners to deny services
to LGBT people based on their religious
beliefs took eect in July 2014. ThenArizona Gov. Jan Brewer earlier that year
vetoed a similar measure in her state.
The Idaho House of Representatives on
Friday approved a non-binding resolution
that urges Congress to impeach federal
judges who rule in support of marriage
rights for same-sex couples. The Michigan
House of Representatives earlier this

month approved three bills that would

allow publicly-funded adoption agencies
to reject prospective foster parents based
on their moral or religious grounds.
A Virginia House of Delegates
subcommittee in January killed a socalled conscience clause bill that would
have allowed state licensed or accredited
business owners to deny service to
someone based on their religious beliefs.
Transgender rights advocates in recent
weeks have begun posting we just need
to pee seles online response to bills that
seek to force people to use public restrooms
based on their biological gender.

The Baltimore Eagle, a mainstay of

Baltimores leather community since
1991, closed in December 2012 following
its sale, leaving many in the community
uncertain as to the bars fate.
Charles Parrish and Ian Parrish
purchased the property and vowed to reopen it again as the Baltimore Eagle after
renovations are completed. But when Ian
Parrish came in to further examine the
premises located at 2022 N. Charles St.
following the sale, the magnitude of the
work needed to complete the project was,
as he put it, the worst possible case.
According to the website of the
Community Law Center, a nonprot
law rm that provides legal services to
community and nonprot organizations
throughout Maryland, There was a lien
on the property that the title search did
not pick up. The property was full of
garbage and had been used for drugs
and prostitution. The roof was collapsing
and the mortar between the bricks was
turning to sand. The Parrishes had to gut
the building. So far, he [sic] has expended
$150,000 and the project will probably
end up costing around $1 million. This
does not include the purchase price.
Parrish indicated that a dumpster
a day for a month was needed to
remove the trash, two large box trucks
of furniture and personal items were
donated to Habitat for Humanity, and
even more truckloads of items were sent
for recycling. Other work, such as the
installation of an electrical line from BGE
and a six-month permitting process, were
essential to bring the building up to code.
We took bed sheets o the wall
covering structural problems. . . there
were goods and memorabilia collected
over 30 years. It was 10,000 square feet of
hoarder space, Parrish said. As a result
of these unexpected delays, the 180day requirement needed to complete
construction was not met to satisfy the
Baltimore Liquor Board, thus placing the
entire project in jeopardy.
Throughout this period, the Parrish
family stated that they kept neighboring
civic associations, city ocials and others
abreast of the ongoing developments.
During a contentious hearing with the
liquor board on March 12, the Parrishes
along with their attorney Melvin Kodenski
argued that their application for a transfer
of ownership be approved since the

scope of the reconstruction warranted an

extension of the 180-day guideline.
Kodenski noted that in the past, such
extensions were granted for cases of re,
arson, redevelopment and other issues.
He cited a case, Woodeld v. West River
Improvement Association, which he
said held that the board does not have
to enforce the 180-day provision, if it
chooses not to.
One of the three-member Liquor
Board commissioners, Dana Petersen
Moore, strongly rebuked Kodenskis
argument saying, all of that went out the
window after the audit. Those policies
and procedures were wrong. Indeed,
the audit she referred to criticized
previous commissioners for disregarding
Maryland law and new commissioners
were appointed two by then-Gov.
Martin OMalley and one by Mayor
Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to enforce
the rules more stringently.
Tom Ward, a former judge who was
appointed to chair the board, told
Kodenski to submit a legal memorandum
delineating the circumstances for why the
board should extend the timeframe. Ward
remarked during the hearing, It looks to
me like maybe you bought something
that you shouldnt have bought.
Kodenski would have to nd legal
precedent but would need to go outside
of Baltimore City since the past liquor
boards actions have been criticized
based on the audit. Ward stated that if
he cannot be convinced to extend the
180-day rule after reviewing Kodenskis
memorandum, the liquor license would
be considered dead.
Much of the arguments at the March
12 hearing focused on turf battles among
various civic associations and over
process and not knowing the plans for the
establishment. Representatives from the
Charles North Community Association
and the Charles Village Civic Association
opposed the extension. Kelly Cross,
president of the Old Goucher Community
Association, was in support of the project
stating that the neighborhood is in need
of nightlife entertainment.
Ian Parrish remains optimistic that
these issues will be resolved and will soon
unveil his new management team. They
said I shouldnt have bought that building,
but I think this neighborhood and this bar
are worth the risk, Parrish told the Blade.
The groundwork is laid, our construction
team is standing by, and as soon as the
eight people who oppose this project get
out of the way, we can get to work.
The Baltimore Eagles website still
points to a 2015 re-opening.

Syphilis rates in Chelsea highest in nation

NEW YORK Syphilis rates in New Yorks Chelsea neighborhood are growing
with city health ocials reporting 138 new cases in 2013, DNAinfo, a regional
news agency, reports.
That means Chelsea residents have 93.3 cases per 100,000 people, substantially
higher than the citys average of 14 cases per 100,000, the article said. That
also makes Chelseas rates higher than any city in the country including San
Francisco, which had a rate of 60 cases per 100,000 people in 2013 according to
the Centers for Disease Control.
The increase came amid a rise in citywide infection rates, which rose more
than 8 percentlast year, according to the Department of Healths annual report,
DNAinfo reports. There were 628 cases of syphilis infections reported in New
York City in the rst half of 2014, as compared to 585 in the same period the year
before. The DOH has not released the full 2014 numbers.
In NYC, the vast majority of syphilis cases are among men, specically men who
have sex with men, the DOH said in a statement, blaming a widespread failure
to use condoms. The increasing syphilis incidence is driven by unprotected sex.
Anthony Hayes of the Gay Mens Health Crisis said that because syphilis is
dicult to detect early on, the disease spreads rapidly.
In those areas you have a sexual network that are likely unaware that they
have syphilis. When you have sexual networks that are unaware that they have
something, it is easy for it to multiply more quickly, he told DNAinfo.

Gay, bi men more likely to tan, get cancer

McLEAN, Va. Gay and bisexual men in the United States are twice as likely as
straight men to get skin cancer, according to a new study reported on by several
news outlets.
One likely reason is that gay and bisexual men are three times more likely
to engage in indoor tanning, according to the study to be presented last week
in San Francisco at a meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, USA
Today reports.
The study suggests that anti-tanning messages, most often aimed at young
women, need to be broader, says researcher Sarah Arron, an associate professor
of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco.
The primary reason that men and women engage in indoor tanning is
because of the cultural association of tanning with a healthy look and overall
attractiveness, USA Today quoted Arron as having said. We need to dispel the
myth of the healthy tan.
Tanning, whether in the sun or in a tanning bed, can cause skin cancer,
including melanoma, the most dangerous kind, according to the U.S. Surgeon
Generals oce.
For the study, Arron and colleagues rst looked at data from government
health surveys conducted in California between 2001 and 2009. Those surveys
found elevated rates of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers among gay
and bisexual men but not gay and bisexual women. They also found gay and
bisexual men in that state were much more likely to engage in indoor tanning
than straight men, USA Today reports.

Kramer calls AIDS scourge act of genocide

NEW YORK The Gay Mens Health Crisis honored Larry Kramer, the legendary
AIDS activist and playwright who was a founding member of the agency in 1982,
at its spring gala Monday night.
Upon receiving the Larry Kramer Activism Award, Kramer gave a blistering
speech that criticized U.S. elected ocials for neglect. It was originally posted on
Facebook by Peter Staley and was reproduced in several news outlets including
the San Diego Gay & Lesbian News.
HIV/AIDS has been our plague for 34 years, Kramer said. We should have
known more about this plague by now. Thirty-four years is a very long time to
let people die.
I think more and more about evil. I believe in evil. I believe evil is an act,
intentional or not, of inicting undeserved harm on others, he said. Genocide
is such an act. I believe genocide is being inicted upon gay people. Genocide
is the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or
ethnic group. Such as gay people. Such as people of color. To date, around the
world, an estimated 78 million people have become infected, 39 million of whom
have died. When we rst became acquainted with HIV there were 41 cases.
The full text of his speech is available at sdgln.com.

Shame on Washington Post

Columnist defends Schock,
attacks LGBT media

KEVIN NAFF is editor of the Washington Blade

and can be reached at kna@washblade.com.

The Washington Posts Steven Petrow

should stick to polite and safe-for-suburban-sensibilities columns about which
side of the aisle to sit at a gay wedding
and leave the politics of outing to those
who know something about it.
For years, readers have endured the
Posts irresponsible, inaccurate and
sometimes downright homophobic coverage from straight-washing our obituaries to ignoring our contributions to the
military to carefully excising any mention
of sexuality or signicant others from
news and feature stories.
And now we have Petrow, who writes
the saccharine, token Civilities column for the Style section where most
LGBT coverage is ghettoized in the Post
slamming the LGBT press as shameful for making insinuations about Aaron

Schocks sexual orientation.

Whatever comes of the speculation
about Schocks sexuality if anything
ever does lets not base it on his physique and sartorial choices, he writes.
OK, lets set aside the teal belts,
six-pack abs, narcissistic social media
posts and Downton Abbey-inspired
office dcor. Schock is conspicuously
single, travels extensively with a male
aide and his own father felt oddly compelled to publicly deny his son is gay.
Not to mention his atrocious anti-gay
voting record, a fact at odds with his
millennial status, a generation that
generally favors LGBT rights and acceptance. And the fact that former gay colleague Barney Frank assumed Schock
had been outed when he first learned
of his resignation is telling indeed.
The LGBT media outlets speculating
about Schock are doing so because weve
seen this movie before and we know how
it ends. Ask David Dreier, Mark Foley or
Larry Craig, to name a few. Schock invites this speculation with the obnoxious,
preening persona that hes cultivated
via Instagram, Twitter and Mens Fitness
photo shoots. He has spent more time
developing a social media following than
on crafting legislation in Congress.
If Schock wants privacy, which Petrow
claims we owe him, then he should do

E DIT OR IA L C A R T OON

his job, go home and shut the door. Voila,

privacy. But you cant have it both ways.
Schock doesnt get to appear shirtless in
national magazines, boast of his extravagant trips on social media to thousands of
followers and otherwise live a very public
life as a member of Congress and then
demand privacy when it comes to his sexual orientation. Its an oensive double
standard that we never extend to straight
public gures, yet Schock deserves kid
gloves and deference?
There are more problems with Petrows
piece. He writes: Of course, there are
men who have sex with other men and
dont identify as gay (think about the accusations against former senator Larry
Craig). Without credible witnesses, were
left with rumors that sound more like accusations all of which feels like pinkbaiting to me.
Ah, yes, poor Larry Craig. The delusional homophobe who attacked LGBT
people at every turn while in the U.S.
Senate turned out to be a self-loathing
closet case. He doesnt identify as gay
because he hates himself and is deeply
unhealthy. And there werent accusations against Larry Craig; there was a
police ocers rst-hand account of being propositioned in a bathroom and
Craigs sad, desperate excuse of having
a wide stance.
Why is the Washington Post defending Larry Craig and Aaron Schock? This
brand of polite, deferential-to-the-powerful commentary is the antithesis of what
journalists ought to be doing. To hell
with civilities, do your job and ask some
tough questions of the powerful.
As a longtime member of the LGBT
media, I reject Petrows inane criticism
and dare him to use his access and platform to write something substantive
about these issues. As a journalist, he
should know better than to attack the
messenger.
Closeted public ocials and public
gures should have no place to hide.
From Anderson Cooper to Jodie Foster
to Ken Mehlman, weve seen the damage the closet does and the good that
comes from opening the door and living an honest life. Now that hes out of
Congress and free of the Republican
Partys homophobic inuences, maybe
Schock will nally come out. But the
public ought to have no sympathy for
this fraud, who misused taxpayer and
campaign donor funds to pay for a lavish lifestyle he cant aord. He resigned
only to bring an end to the congressional
inquiries, which surely would have found
more misdeeds. Hes not a victim and is
undeserving of the Posts and Petrows
misplaced sympathies.

2016 race needs a Sincerity Detector

A new tool to evaluate Hillary

and her GOP opponents

KATE CLINTON is a humorist who has

entertained LGBT audiences for 30 years. Her
monthly column appears exclusively in the
Blade. Reach her via kateclinton.com.

Through some mysterious reserve of discipline, I did not binge-watch my way through
the enforced sheltering-at-home caused by
the recent unpleasantness known as winter.
OK, I did watch the extraordinary Transparent one whole snowy day. Otherwise I was
hard at work.
It was time well spent. I am now waiting on
patents for two of my inventions: the combo
vape/sele stick and the line of clothes for
seniors made entirely of airbags with tiny
embedded gyroscopes calibrated to inate

when a senior is tipping.

My third invention is proving to be a devilish challenge. When Hobby Lobby got its free
pass to opt out of obeying laws based on
sincerely held religious beliefs, I wondered
how and who would be measuring sincerity
levels. Hence the Sincerity Detector.
Some might think this a frivolous exercise.
I disagree. The detector will be essential in all
right-wing, weasly, whinging, wimp-out religious exemptions. Ocial Sincerity Detector could become a sought-after civil service
job with health and pension benets.
And the device will be critical in the upcoming presidential election. Let me remind you
that in the debriefs after Hillary Clinton lost
the Democratic primary to Barack Obama,
presstitutes opined that Hillarys fatal aw
was that she was unable to fake sincerity.
I am so on to something.
And I wont lie to you. I want Hillary Clinton
to be the next president of the United States.
I had hoped for more time to ne-tune my
Sincerity Detector, but Darrell Issa, the Jean
Valjean of Benghazi, seems to have jumpstarted Hillarys campaign with Emailgate.
Rep. ISIS is demanding a full explanation of

the emojis Hillary is fond of using: blushing

bride, yoginis, thumbs up. Its sweet, actually.
While Im still getting the kinks out of the
detector, I do have some strategeric advice
for the Clinton campaign: Never do a press
conference in front of La Guernica. I dont
care if it is Picassos statement against fascism, showing the tragedies of war and the
suering of innocent civilians.
The press wants something perkier,
brighter. They like shiny pretty things. Its
much more fun for them to cover the Republican candidates sponsored by the
Teahaddists and the Kork Brotherhood.
Marco Free market capitalism causes democracy, except for Cuba Rubio. Rand uncomfortable with gay marriage Paul. Chris
a name so nice he used it twice Christie.
Mike Reverend guns, guts, and god Huckabee. Donald Trump, probably. Jeb Bush,
denitely. They miss Mitt.
With the Democrats all the press has is Hillary. Sigh. And they have covered everything
already, from Travelgate to Blue-Gap-DressGate to Vince Foster. They are bored and they
take it out on her.
So my suggestion is to get some decoys

to run against Hillary. I love Elizabeth Warren

but I hope she stays right where she is and
makes life a living hell for vulture capitalists
everywhere.
It shouldnt be hard to nd some willing decoy candidates. A billionaire tech dude who
just looked up from programming and now
wants to do good in the world. A billionaire
gay man who wants naming rights to the
White House. A football coach who wants
to make a point about those deated balls.
Somebody, anybody, on a book tour. Francis
Underwood. President Grant. Or Melly. Since
corporations are people now, Cinnabon can
run! Everybody loves Cinnabon.
There will be twice-weekly live debates,
loosely based on bracketology and the red
spinning chairs from The Voice. The pool
of suggested moderators: Clint Eastwood,
Harper Lee, Robin Penn and, of course, Ryan
Seacrest.
All candidates rst have to sign a waiver
avowing that they will drop out of the running just before the Democratic convention. Luckily I should have my foolproof
Sincerity Detector up and running in time
for the waiver-signing.

Stand up with Scouts for Equality

D.C. fundraiser to benet
groups important work

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

As a boy growing up in New York City,

Scouting was important to me. My parents
started me in Scouting as a Cub Scout and
I went through the ranks as a Boy Scout,
Explorer, and Explorer Advisor. I became
involved with Scoutings National Committee on Scouting for the Handicapped when
I moved to D.C. to direct the follow-up to the
White House Conference on Handicapped
Individuals/Implementation Unit for the
Carter administration. I was never out during those years of my involvement with the
Scouts. That was in a time when it was much
harder to come out as gay or lesbian.
I went to summer camp at Ten Mile River,
a Scouting camp originally endowed to the
Boy Scouts by then-Gov. Franklin Roosevelt,

and my rst major trip out of New York was

a bus ride across country to attend the 25th
Boy Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs.
On the way we stopped at Philmont Scout
Ranch in New Mexico. It was an amazing
experience for a 13-year- old growing up on
the streets of Manhattan. Those were experiences you could only get as a Scout.
Today much has changed and adults and
even boys and girls are much more comfortable being out about who they are. For the
Girl Scouts it has never been a big issue, but
until Jan. 1, 2014 you couldnt become a Boy
Scout if you were gay. Now we all know during those years of prohibiting membership
in the Scouts to gay boys and men, thousands of Scouts and their leaders were gay.
But until 2014 young men had to hide that
fact and the Boy Scouts of America (BSA)
chose to keep their heads buried in the sand
and pretend these Scouts didnt exist.
Then along came a group called Scouts
for Equality. They are a 501(c) (3) organization founded in 2012 composed largely of
Boy Scouts of America alumni dedicated to
ending the BSAs ban on gay members and
leaders. They believe since Scouting provides youth with an opportunity to try new
things, provide service to others, build selfcondence, and reinforce ethical standards
it should be open to all young men. Scouts

for Equality believes these opportunities

reward Scouts throughout their lives by improving their relationships, their work lives,
their family lives, and the values by which
they live. The core leadership of Scouts for
Equality all earned Scoutings highest award
Eagle Scout.
The rst goal of Scouts for Equality was
met when in May of 2013 it won a vote that
changed the policy and admitted gay Scouts.
But that vote only went half-way and there is
still blatant discrimination by the Boy Scouts,
which will kick out a gay Scout at age 18 and
not allow them to become a leader in the organization. Changing this incoherent policy
is now the mission of Scouts for Equality
and everyone who believes in fairness and
equality should support them in this mission.
I had the good fortune to sit down and
talk with Zach Wahls, executive director of
Scouts for Equality. He has moved its oces
to D.C. Many know Zach from his incredible
speech as a 19-year-old University of Iowa
student when he spoke about the strength
of his family during a public forum on House
Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives. Wahls, who has two moms,
spoke out to oppose House Joint Resolution
6, which would have ended marriage equality in Iowa.

Zach shared the work he is now doing

with Scouts for Equality and the need the
organization has to raise money to continue
their eorts. Like all small non-prots getting the message out is a huge step toward
success and that costs money. There is no
question about the commitment and value
of the organization. What Zach explained
to me, and I admit surprised me, is the relationship between the Mormon Church
and Scouting. Fully 38,000 Scout units in the
United States are sponsored (or chartered
in BSA parlance) by the Mormon Church.
While Equality Utah negotiated with the legislature in Utah to move forward on legislation to ban discrimination against the LGBT
community one of the biggest exemptions
in the bill is that it doesnt apply to the BSA.
The larger LGBT community and our allies
cant accept the ban on gay leaders in the
Boy Scouts and we have to aggressively
speak out on this and ght it.
One way we can help is to join Zach and
Scouts for Equality at their fundraiser on
April 14 at the Longview Gallery, 1234 9th
St., N.W., from 68 p.m. Tickets are available starting from $50 at the door or online
at scoutsforequality.org/events. I hope you
will join me and others that evening as we
stand up for full civil and human rights for
the LGBT community.

The late gay rights pioneer Frank Kamenys exhortations ring in my ears as
I anticipate arguments before the U.S.
Supreme Court on whether the 14th
Amendment requires states to license
same-sex marriages.
Chief Justice John Roberts, in his dissent in the 2013 Windsor case, dismissed
as snippets of legislative history the
evidence for decades of anti-gay animus
by the U.S. government. This erasure of
our struggle is not unique to judges. Tom
Brokaws 2007 book, Boom! Voices of the
Sixties, prompted a letter from Kameny
charging, Your book simply deletes the
momentous events of that decade which
led to the vastly altered and improved
status of gays in our culture today.
Such deletions inspired the re-estab-

lishment in late 2011 of the Mattachine

Society of Washington, D.C. (MSDC),
which Kameny founded in 1961 but allowed to lapse in 2006. The new MSDC
is dedicated to archive activism for LGBT
equality. As an ocer of the earlier organization, I joined Charles Francis, who led
the successful eort to preserve the Kameny Papers at the Library of Congress,
in creating the new one.
Mattachines research led to the March
6 ling of its amicus brief in Obergefell
v. Hodges and related cases by its legal
counsel, McDermott Will & Emery LLP.
The brief complements The Peoples
Brief prepared for the Human Rights
Campaign, which explores the historical
and political context of state marriage
bans. The Mattachine brief states:
Original source materials obtained
and recently released by the MSDC reveal the backdrop of animus in front of
which the states enacted the bans now
at issue. The historical background
reveals a culture of animus against LGBT
Americans, justications for excluding
them from the privileges given to all other
Americans.
After World War II, the federal government began ring its homosexual employees, armed with the FBIs Sex Deviate program in 1951 and President Eisenhowers

Executive Order 10450 in 1953. The Civil

Service Commission (CSC), later renamed
the Oce of Personnel Management
(OPM), conducted the purge. After adverse
court rulings, CSC adjusted its arguments
to continue ring people for private, consensual behavior that was irrelevant to
their jobs. It even expelled heterosexually married father William Dew for a few
same-sex encounters as a student; he
fought for years before being restored.
It is a grim history. Eisenhower adviser
Arthur Vandenberg, Jr. was forced to resign when the FBI learned of his homosexuality. CSC General Counsel L.V. Meloy
used a sensational Florida investigative
report to purge federal employees. CSC
Chairman John W. Macy, Jr. denied prying into peoples private sex lives despite
CSCs investigations, then said, We see
no third sex, no oppressed minority or
secret society, but only individuals.
CSC persisted after being rebuked by
a federal appeals court in 1971. By the
1970s, the brief states, the Commission
had reluctantly slowed its purge. But the
lie about a gay security threat lingered.
In the 1990s, President Clinton armed
a cultural shift with executive orders barring anti-gay discrimination in security
clearances and federal civilian service. Yet
as late as the George W. Bush administra-

tion, Special Counsel Scott Bloch fought

gay protections.
The marriage cases being argued April
28 call to mind Kamenys deant 1969
statement to the Defense Department
in the security clearance case of Benning
Wentworth, concerning a previous applicant known only by his case number:
OSD 66-44 may have compromised. He
may have crawled. He may have groveled.
He may have submitted to Departmental blackmail of the most contemptible
kind. We will not. We stand our ground.
We throw down the gauntlet, clearly, unequivocally and unambiguously. These
bracing words stir both pride and sorrow
at the price still paid to uphold our love.
The Mattachine brief, and the archival
rescue that went into it, is in partial payment of an historic debt. But victory in
the marriage cases will not complete that
debt. The thousands, living and dead,
who were persecuted by their own government because of whom they loved,
deserve a formal apology like the one
OPM Director John Berry gave Frank Kameny in 2009. Even as we move forward,
we reclaim our roots. We cannot allow
our gay foremothers and forefathers to
be forgotten.

Supporting our students mental health

We must address suicide so
kids dont suffer in silence
By ROBERT COOK & TIMM WEST
On March 4 a collection of concerned
citizens, nonprot leaders, and leaders
from the private sector gathered in our
nations capital to launch the Change Direction Initiative to change the story in
America about mental health, mental illness and wellness. As the leaders of Teach
For Americas Native Alliance and LGBTQ
Initiatives, we couldnt be more thrilled.
We talk a lot in our jobs about the academic and socioeconomic barriers facing
our students. Here in Washington, D.C.,
one-third of adults are functionally illiterate,
and the poverty rate in neighboring Prince
Georges County has more than doubled
in the last 10 years. Statistics like these
show us that Americas education system
isnt working for all students, and attaining
an excellent education can be signicantly
harder for those growing up in poverty. But,
what we also need to be talking more about

and what Change Direction is helping to

amplify is the critical importance of our
students mental health and wellness.
A student who lacks either isnt a student
who can show up to the classroom ready to
learn or in some cases, show up at all.
Our hearts are heavy with the students
weve witnessed throughout our lives
from the children we grew up with to those
we work with today whose futures were
robbed by their personal pain and suering.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death
and 2.5 times the national rate for
American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN)
youth aged 15-24. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual
youth are four times more likely to attempt
suicide as their straight peers; questioning
youth are three times more likely.
For us, these students are more than just
numbers. Theyre humans who have left a
permanent impression on our hearts.
We both know rsthand the devastating
impacts of suicide. Where Robert lives on
the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota,
the tribal president has issued a state of
suicide emergency after losing ve young
people since December. When Robert was

principal of Pine Ridge High School he lost

three students to suicide.
Growing up, Timm masked his sexual orientation through strict adherence to masculine codes and silence whenever LGBTQ
people were taunted. But such passing
brought guilt that culminated in a suicide attempt at 16. We continue to see this struggle in todays youth from Leelah Alcorn to
Ronin Shimizu who arent as fortunate as
Timm was in surviving and growing to have
his identity armed, allowing him to lead a
healthy and open life.
As part of our commitment to the communities we serve, we believe strongly in
helping to address health and wellness issues for our students and their families
and for our own corps of teachers. Well be
continuing this conversation online at our
TeacherPop blog, where teachers can nd
real-life stories and strategies to help address mental health in their classrooms.
The reality is that while AIAN and LGBTQ
youth attempt and commit suicide at disproportionately high rates, this is an issue
that aects all of our children. One out of
every six ninth-through-12th graders na-

tionwide seriously considered suicide in the

past year.
We must continue to bring awareness to
this issue so our students dont have to suffer in silence. This is a problem we all must
care about.
You can start by learning Change Directions 5 Signs of Suering: withdrawal, agitation, hopelessness, decline in personal care
and change in personality. If you recognize
that someone in your life is suering, reach
out and oer help. Show compassion, caring, and a willingness to nd a solution
when the person may not have the will or
drive to help him- or herself.
We are heartbroken by the many students and young people in our communities whose limitless potential was cut short.
Please visit changedirection.org and pledge
to change the story around mental health,
mental illness, and wellness.
ROBERT COOK sits on the board of the
National Indian Education Association and
is the senior managing director of Teach For
Americas Native Alliance Initiative. TIMM
WEST is managing director of Teach For
Americas LGBTQ Initiative.

Ratication of Presbyterian
vote brings marriage rights
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Presbyterians in the D.C. area have for
the most part welcomed their churchs
decision to ocially recognize same-sex
marriages.
Rev. Jerey Krehbiel of Church of the
Pilgrims near Dupont Circle said Monday
he is very pleased with the result of the
Presbyterian Church (USA) Oce of the
General Assemblys March 17 approval
of a change to language within the
denominations constitution to describe
marriage as what the Associated Press
described as a commitment between
two people.
The Presbyterian General Assembly,
the churchs top legislative body, last year
approved the redenition of marriage
within its constitution. The majority of
the denominations 171 presbyteries,
however, needed to ratify the proposal.
It will take eect on June 21.
Its been something weve been
working on for several years, Krehbiel
says.

president of More Light Presbyterians, a

group for LGBT people in the church, also

welcomed the recognition of same-sex
marriages.
We greeted the news on Tuesday
joyfully, McNeill, who lives in Hyattsville,
Md., says. There are so many folks
within our denominations who have
been waiting decades for the church
to recognize their marriages and their
families.
Rev. G. Wilson Gunn, Jr., general
presbyter of the National Capital

Presbytery, which oversees 108 churches

in the D.C. metropolitan area, says
there are several pastors and elders
who both supported the change in our
church constitution to allow same-gender
marriage and those who opposed the
issue.
We include in our presbytery
signicant leaders on both sides of this
issue, he says.
A newspaper in Upstate New York on
March 23 reported that a local church

has begun to formally separate itself

from the Presbyterian Church (USA)
in response to the decision to accept
same-sex marriages. The Associated
Press noted that 428 churches either
dissolved or entered more conservative
denominations in the two years after the
Presbyterians allowed gays and lesbians
to become pastors.
Franklin Graham, son of Rev. Billy
Graham, is among those who have
criticized the church for redening
marriage.
In his word, the Bible, God has already
dened marriage, as well as sin, and we
should obey that rather than looking
for ways to redene it according to the
desires of our culture, wrote the younger
Graham on his Facebook page. Marriage
is dened as between a man and a
woman end of discussion. Anything
else is a sin against God, and He will judge
all sin one day.
Jim Moseley, executive presbyter
of the New Castle Presbytery, which
includes congregations in Delaware and
Marylands Eastern Shore, says members
of his presbytery earlier this month met
and voted to support the redenition of
marriage.

Q U E E RY : 2 0 Q U E ST I O N S F O R CO N N O R J . H O G A N

How long have you been out and who was

the hardest person to tell?
Ive been out to my friends since I was
about 14, but I kept it from my family
for quite some time. I was from the only
Southern Baptist family in New York, and my
family was very devout. I knew I couldnt tell
them because they would react poorly. We
still dont really talk about it.
Whos your LGBT hero?
I identify with Truman Capote a lot.
Whether its our mutual obsession with
Southern culture despite being ostracized
from it or our shared love of a lavish themed
party, I like to think Truman and I would get
along quite well.

Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past

or present?
Hands down, its GAY/BASH at the Black
Cat. Its one of the few places that Ive seen Ls,
Gs, Bs, Ts and all others partying together to
the best music. Plus, its got some great drag
performances by queens doing things you
wouldnt see at Town.

While wearing many hats to get a start-up o the ground may sound
stressful to some, Connor J. Hogan nds it exciting.
Im one of those people who if I dont have a million balls in the air, I feel
like Im doing nothing, the 26-year-old Deer Park, N.Y., native says.
He started HalfMad Theatre three years ago with his friend Elizabeth
Dapo, citing an urge to produce his own work and to be kind of a theatrical
laboratory for me and my friends. Hogan also works with other companies
such as Contellation Theatre, WSC Avant Bard and others, but says HalfMad
gives him a chance to act, direct, write, market and more.
The current show, Shakespeares The Winters Tale, adapted by Dapo, tells
of Hermione queen of Sicily, who nds that calamity strikes while celebrating
her young sons birthday. Remaining performances are Friday and Saturday
night at 8 and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Capital Fringes new Trinidad Theatre (1358
Florida Ave., N.E.). Pride night is Saturday when $10 tickets will be oered
with the discount code PRIDE. Details at halfmadtheatre.com.

Describe your dream wedding.

Renting a sleeper train that goes across
the country and having the ceremony and
the reception on the moving train. Wed plan
for the train to stop wherever my husband
and I are having our honeymoon, have one
last night with our wedding party, then send
them all home.
What non-LGBT issue are you most
passionate about?
Exposing children to the arts at an early
age. I wouldnt be the person I am today
if I hadnt discovered theater and been
encouraged to pursue it. Kids need to learn
how to be kids and I think the arts lets you
explore sides of you that math, science and
sports dont.

What historical outcome would you

change?
To prevent the Library of Alexandria from
burning down. Who knows what would have
changed if we still had all that knowledge?

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
For me, its probably when Sleater Kinney
got back together. If you havent listened to it
yet, denitely give No Cities to Love a try. Its
a fucking incredible album.
On what do you insist?
That you have a good time.
What was your last Facebook post or
Tweet?
I posted the D.C. Theatre Scene review of
my most recent show, The Winters Tale.
If your life were a book, what would the
title be?
I partied a lot in college. Once someone

told me that I partied to excess, and my

friend quickly replied, What do you mean?
Excess is our forte. So if I was going to write
my autobiography, it would probably be titled
Excess is Our Forte. Also, I really havent
stopped partying.
If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
I used to think I would become straight,
but now, I love myself too much to change
anything about who I am.
What do you believe in beyond the
physical world?
Above all else, I believe in love in all its
forms.
Whats your advice for LGBT movement
leaders?
That, although its an important step,
marriage equality is not the only problem
facing our community. As a gay white man, I
know that we can be the loudest voices in the
LGBT community. I want to create open and
safe spaces for queer, trans, lesbian, bisexual
and gay people to have open discussions
around issues that they are facing every day.
What would you walk across hot coals
for?
My best friend, Mary.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?
I think the gay male obsession with the
perfect body hurts us more and more every
day. I think everyone needs to take a chill pill
and just have a conversation. And abs, just
like beauty, dont last forever.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
I love both Hedwig and the Angry Inch
and A Single Man.

Whats the most overrated social custom?

Small talk can be pretty annoying
but understand how its useful in social
interactions. I think talking in euphemism is
really annoying to me. If you have something
to say, you should say it.
What trophy or prize do you most covet?
Trophies and prizes just really dont appeal
to me. I mean, I guess it would be nice to
be recognized for my hard work, but what I
really appreciate is a kind word from a person
I respect or look up to.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
Every step is not the destination.
Why Washington?
Ive been asking myself this question a lot
recently. I really love this city and everything it
has to oer from the arts to the restaurants
to the bars. However, theres a culture of
competition here that kind of sticks me the
wrong way. But D.C. isnt done with me yet. I
still have so much to discover and learn.

Blithe spirit was an instant hit when it
premiered in 1941 and has delightfully
endured over the years.
And now at National Theatre, Angela
Lansbury, another force of nature with
uncanny staying power, is reprising her
Tony Award-winning take on the ghostly
comedys eccentric medium, Madame
Arcati, a part she rst played in the 2009
Broadway revival.
Reportedly penned by Coward over
ve paranormally inspired days, Blithe
Spirit ranks as one of his most popular
works. The plot is simple: Researching
a new storyline, successful novelist
Charles Condomine invites local medium
Madame Arcati to conduct a sance at his
home in the Kent countryside. On hand
for the occasion are Charles skeptical
wife Ruth and genial neighbors Dr. and
Mrs. Bradman.
When Madame Arcati unwittingly
summons the spirit of Charles late rst
wife Elvira (pronounced Elveera), the wellrun Condomine household dissolves into
chaos. Now stuck in the material world,
mischievous Elvira who can only be
seen by Charles strikes on a plan to
reclaim her earthly mate and make life
miserable for his current wife, not the
ideal mnage trois.
Though Charles enjoys the visiting
ghosts attention and her sense of fun, he
does his best to keep her in check. After
all, he knows Elvira well: I remember
her physical attractiveness, which was
tremendous, and her spiritual integrity,
which was nil.
Staged by Michael Blakemore and
gorgeously designed by Simon Higlett,
this Blithe Spirit ran on Londons West
End last year (dierent from Broadways
2009 revival). And its an impressively
drawn work. Theres the expansive

discovered athletic
passion later in life
By KEVIN MAJOROS
In the continuing Blade series on the
veterans and rookies that make up the
LGBT sports teams in Washington, we
take a look at two rowers from the D.C.
Strokes Rowing Club.
The Strokes have wrapped up their
winter dryland training and took to the
Anacostia River for the rst time this
year just last week. The two women
spotlighted here did not have sports
backgrounds before joining the Strokes
and have since redened themselves as
competitive athletes.
Christine Wirth, who is 25 and from
Columbia, Md., noticed the Strokes at the
Capital Pride parade and after graduating
from the University of Maryland, decided
to register for their Learn to Row program
in the spring of 2014.
I tried one semester of rugby in
college, but other than academics, I had
never been on a team, Wirth says. My
only sports activities were recreational
biking and running.
Following the completion of her Learn
to Row classes, Wirth attended a Strokes
barbeque where the veterans were on
hand to encourage the rookies to join the
novice program.
Wirth signed on and during the rst
month of the novice program, the
veterans serve as volunteer coxswains to
help navigate the rookies in their boats so
there are no crashes.
The Strokes oer a lot of interaction
with the veterans, which was important
because I had so many questions, says
Wirth. I also enjoyed the women of D.C.
Strokes practices on Sundays.
During the rst year of the novice
program, the rowers compete in one
sprint race and three head races (longer
distance). Wirth found that the sport
agreed with her in several ways.
It has been a crazy transition into being
an athlete but it suits me really well,
Wirth says. You use all your muscles in

in June at the Stonewall Regatta which is
hosted by the Strokes.
Its been great meeting people outside
of the bar scene, Wirth says. I also just
ran in my rst Rock n Roll half marathon
and I could denitely feel the benets of
the extra cardio from the Strokes winter
dryland training.
Sue Jacoby also noticed the Strokes in
the Capital Pride parades. When she was
working on her doctorate, she also looked

Jacoby was raised in Florida, moved to D.C.
25 years ago and works as an educational
administrator. She also had no experience
as an athlete in high school or college.
I had a phenomenal novice coach who
helped me fall in love with rowing, Jacoby
says. It is a combination of an individual

team and has since raced at USRowing
Masters Nationals, the World OutGames and
the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta.
Jacoby is quick to point out that the
sport requires a huge commitment.
Practices are at 5:30 a.m. and it is often
cold and dark. As a veteran, she knows
its important to welcome rookies, teach
them the basics and show them the
things that will encourage them to remain
in the sport.
The rookies are the future life blood of
the team, says Jacoby. They will play a
critical role in the growth of the team and
furthering the team.
Jacoby goes on to say that the rookies

Older partner wary of

needy boyfriend

MICHAEL RADKOWSKY, Psy.D. is a licensed

psychologist who works with gay individuals
and couples in D.C. He can be found online
at personalgrowthzone.com. All identifying
information has been changed for reasons
of condentiality. Have a question? Send it to
Michael@personalgrowthzone.com.

MICHAEL,
My friends are telling me to break up
with my boyfriend of eight months. They
think hes a mess. I agree that Eric is an
anxious guy. He worries a lot about his
precarious job situation, needs frequent
reassurance about my feelings for him
and I use a lot of energy soothing him.
When Eric is calm, things are pretty
good. We like to go out to eat, to theater
and movies, and just went to New York
for the weekend, all enjoyable. But my
friends make the point that Im setting
myself up for a lot of work in the future if
I stay with him.
I was in a relationship for nine years
until my (younger) partner dumped me
three years ago. Im now in my early 50s
and am, to be honest, relieved to be in a
relationship again. I dont like hookups
and I also dont like being alone. It feels
like the odds of nding someone better
are not great. Eric is a pretty good guy
and I like being able to cheer him up. So
Ive concluded that its better to be with
someone, even if hes awed, than to be
alone.
My friends, however, say this is crazy
and Im asking for trouble. I say no
relationship is perfect. Thoughts?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Is it better to be with someone than
be alone? Great question. Id say its
certainly rewarding to be with someone
if a relationship gives you joy and not
too much grief, keeping in mind that all
relationships will have their share of
challenges.
Staying with someone because you
dont want to be alone puts you in a
precarious position. If you want to stay

coupled, no matter what, youre likely to

avoid taking risks that might be helpful
such as addressing your desire for more
sex or confronting your partners drug
use because you fear rocking the boat.
I cant tell if your friends are being
catty or if youre downplaying Erics
wobbliness. Perhaps both are true. Do
your friends have reason to dislike Eric
or to be jealous of your relationship with
him? Might your fear of singlehood be
leading you to see Eric as healthier than
he actually is? How can you gure out if
you should trust your own judgment?
As you note, everyone has aws and
you are the only person who can (and
should) decide if you want to accept
your boyfriend as he is. A good partner
strives to behave decently and with
integrity, shares a commitment to build
a strong and collaborative relationship
and challenges you and himself to grow.
Are you nding these attributes in Eric? In
yourself?
Being constantly responsible for
soothing someone elses anxiety is a
strain. It can feel good to be needed, but
if you enjoy this role, Eric has a powerful
incentive to keep turning to you for help.
Over time, you may grow resentful of Eric.
Erics ongoing reliance on you will
create an unequal power dynamic in your
relationship. Being the caretaker means
you dont really have a partner who is
your peer.
Finally, Eric is badly positioned if he
cant soothe himself. What happens
when youre not around? What did he
do before he met you? Im curious if he
shows any interest in learning to calm his
own anxiety and if he is bothered by his
dependence on you.
Its true that there will be points in any
relationship where were called upon to
care for our partner. That comes with the
territory. But occasional soothing or even
round-the-clock caretaking in a crisis are
dierent from being a full-time pair of
crutches.
You cant know for sure if youll be ne
tolerating Erics long-term reliance on
you, but the likely downsides of this for
each of you and for your relationship are
clear. Talking with Eric about your current
dynamic might help change things for
the better, but it may well upset Eric and
unsettle your relationship.
Are you willing to take the risk? Your
call, but my own strong opinion is that
a relationship that cannot tolerate an
honest discussion is one in which youre
unlikely to do much growing.

Church leaders grappled with

issue for decades before vote
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 23

Moseley, like Gunn, nevertheless

acknowledged some within his presbytery
or regional district do not support the
decision to accept gay unions. The executive
presbyter of the New Castle Presbytery
told the Washington Blade there are some
within his jurisdiction who would possibly
refuse to ociate same-sex weddings.
Some sessions if pressed would stand
on the ground that they are in opposition
and would probably stand in opposition
to having a same-sex marriage in their
church, Moseley says. That would be
their prerogative. No one has reported a
case to me though.
Craig N. Palmer, transitional general
presbyter of the Presbytery of Baltimore,
says the history of his group has been
generally in support of changes to the
churchs constitution with regard to
marriage, ordination and other issues.
Were trying to stay engaged with
everyone around this issue, Palmer says.
Im hopeful that as we move forward in
our own journey as disciples of our Lord,
that we can stay in conversation around
these issues.
Krehbiel said some members of his
church have questioned what he calls
the hetero-normativity of the model of
marriage.
There are some who are unsure
whether marriage equality is the most
important issue facing the LGBTQ
community, he says.

Decision to redene
marriage joyous for
LGBT Presbyterians
The Presbyterian Church (USA) since
2011 has allowed openly LGBT people
to hold leadership positions within the
denomination. The church last June
eectively lifted its ban on pastors
performing marriages in jurisdictions
where it is legal.
The amendment to the denominations
constitution contains a provision that
states no clergy will be compelled to
ociate a same-sex marriage.
Krehbiel was a commissioner of the
churchs 2012 General Assembly that
took place in Pittsburgh.
He says he was somewhat surprised
the church moved so quickly on marriage,
considering the reaction the issue
received during the Pittsburgh meeting.
The church was so afraid of taking this
step, Krehbiel says. They were barely
willing to have a full debate.

Others with whom the Blade spoke

said they were far less surprised.
I imagine most people saw this
decision coming, Palmer says.
The Presbyterian Church is now the
largest Protestant denomination in the
world to recognize same-sex marriages
and ocially allow their clergy to perform
them.

their ordinations on the line. He says the
decision to acknowledge gay nuptials no
longer puts them in that situation.
For some of those clergy who put
their ordinations on the line it really is a
signicant day, McNeill says.
The Pittsburgh Presbytery charged
Rev. Janet Edwards with violating Biblical
teachings and the Constitution of the
Presbyterian Church after she ociated
the wedding of two women in 2005.
Edwards was acquitted of the charges in
2008, and she has subsequently lobbied
the denomination to acknowledge samesex marriage.
Today, the words of Matthew 19:26
ring true for me: with You, all things are
possible. Hallelujah, wrote Edwards in
a blog post for More Light Presbyterians
after the church voted to acknowledge
same-sex marriages. What a privilege to

The sandwich generation

Boomers face challenges
caring for parents and
adult ospring
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
Tuna sandwiches.Peanut butter sandwiches. Cucumber sandwiches. Finger
sandwiches.
I have been accused of possessing a
cheesy-and-spicy-tomato-and-full-of-baloney sense of humor, but during the last few
weeks I have felt more like shredded lettuce.
Why? Because, in helping my mother
downsize from her independent living facility, I have become my own version of
The Sandwich Generation.
I rst heard this term, which is used to
describe people who are caring for their
parents and their children at the same
time, while participating in a course to
earn the designation of Senior Real Estate
Specialist (SRES).
The rst thing I learned was that even
though I passed the course and earned
the designation, this was not going to become my primary niche. I did, however,
develop a profound respect for those who
focus on the housing needs of the elderly;
they are the saints who walk among us.
Representing the top piece of bread
of our sandwich are the elderly parents
(and Im talking 80s and 90s here, not my
Boomer brethren). Many of them may be
hanging on for dear life to their four-story
Colonial rather than looking forward to a

condo on Connecticut Avenue or an independent living facility at King Farm.

They may also be reluctant to part with
the treasures they have amassed over the
years, so having the phone number of a professional organizer who specializes in downsizing on tap can be extremely helpful.
The decision to move is often being
made by someone else, perhaps an adult
son or daughter, the meat of our sandwich. While interacting with the adult children, who may be the decision makers
and the source of funds for the move, it
is critical not to exclude the aging parents
from the conversation. Remember that
they still have a stake in the process and
want to be consulted and involved.
Do you see some stress forming yet?
Now add the bottom piece of bread,
the next generation of sons and daughters. The people in the middle of the
sandwich are often trying to handle the
emotional, nancial and residential needs
of the bottom piece of bread as well. Is it
any wonder the lling is spread too thin?
In many cultures, multi-generational
households are the norm, where children
live at home until married and grandparents are revered elders.Due to economic
and nancial concerns in parts of the U.S.,
we are seeing more adult children return
to the family home and aging parents being taken in by their ospring.
In some areas of the country where the
cost of land is less than it is here, builders
are oering more housing stock designed
with rst oor master suites, basement
suites and in-law spaces, granny ats and

other accommodations for multi-family use.

The Washington area, however, with its
plethora of vertical residences, does not
lend itself well to the concept of aging in
place that is often the rst choice for American seniors.Few elevator homes exist and
then, only at the higher price points.
Downsizing to a condominium or moving to a suburban area such as Silver
Spring, Md., or Fairfax, Va., may be necessary to nd single-story living as knees
weaken, hips joints are replaced and
home health care aides are hired.
An independent living facility, where
people who are ambulatory and highly
functional can have a nice apartment, enjoy indoor and outdoor activities and never have to cook or clean again unless they
choose to, is a popular yet costly choice.
On the other side of the sandwich, digging out and nishing an English basement may be a great investment to help

a returning young adult pay o student

loans and save for a home of his own. It
can also serve as income when needed later in life by other members of the family.
My own family sandwich is lopsided, with
a top piece of bread and no bottom unless you count Schnauzers, who dont earn
enough to support me in my old age. So,
with my mother soon to be ensconced in a
board and care facility (thats Californian for
nursing home), my personal job as Senior
Real Estate Specialist is done.
And now Im o to trade my fourstory Colonial for a one-story, mid-century modern home in D.C. for under
$700,000.Anybody want to take odds on
that happening?
