Investigating a Crime Scene
Investigating a crime scene is one of the most important parts of any criminal investigation / case . If done right,
it can actually be the key to solving a crime. Crime Scene Investigators, or CSIs, use special methods and
equipment for investigating a crime scene. Since evidence gathered at a crime scene is what puts a criminal in
jail, crime scenes are very important.
There are many steps that have to be taken when conducting a criminal investigation and investigating a crime
scene. Firstly, detectives have to try and figure out why and how a crime was committed. They examine a crime
scene looking for information or clues such as fingerprints, weapons, and DNA. They investigate the victims

history to determine why someone would want to harm them. After they have formed a hypothesis about the
victim , they try to find proof that somebody committed a crime so that they can arrest the suspects. They look at
both the motive and the actual evidence of the crime and try to see if their hypothesis makes sense. Forensic
science is used to help solve crimes and there are many types of forensic methods. Forensic DNA analysis is
used to determine DNA sequences from biological samples.

Imagine you are one of the Crime Scene

Investigators in the photo . You have just arrived at the crime scene and you find out about the
first hypotheses formulated by the FBI police officer on the picture . ( Make 6 hypotheses)

Well, I can see a broken bike near the tree, so it may

have been an accident. One of the victims must be
young because there is a schoolbag on the ground.
There are 2 victims. One might have committed the
crime. We can see a rifle on the ground which may
have been the murder weapon. Since the accident
occurred during the day, someone must have seen
something. We cant see blood spatters on the crime
secene. The victim cant have been shot !
