here are two things that always

seem to come up as Im sifting
through news stories regarding the
oil and gas industry. The first is fracking.
The second is pipeline construction in
North America.
Several pipeline projects are in limbo
currently throughout the U.S., from the
Bakken Shale to the Marcellus and Utica
shales. The one that garners the most head-

lines on my news feed is, of course, the

Keystone XL. As I write this in February,
the Keystone XL bill is on its way to the
Oval Office.
Once there, the bill is likely going
to be vetoed by President Obama and
then the whole process will have to start
over again.
The other pipeline thats been hitting
the news lately is the Enbridge pipeline
plan in Wisconsin. The company plans to triple capacity
between Superior, Wisconsin, and the Illinois state line.
Enbridge Energy Co. plans to
boost the volume of oil to 1.2
million barrels a day.
The increase would send
more oil from Canada and
North Dakota across Wisconsin than the proposed
Keystone XL pipeline linking
western Canada to the Gulf
Coast. As of early February,
Dane County (Wis.) was
the final unit of government
needed to approve the plans.
According to a story in
the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Dane County supervisors
were raising concerns about
the financial liability of a potential oil spill. To address
those concerns, Enbridge

WELDING IN

THE WEST
Oklahomas Key Welding sees big growth as it finds a
niche in providing services to oilfield companies
By Ken Wysocky | Photography by Mike Hoffman

ven though it happened more than 25 years ago, Bill

Key still vividly remembers the first welding job his
company, Key Welding Inc., performed in the oilfields
of Oklahoma.
I cut open some doors on a control house and
welded the conductor pipe onto a drilling rig, he
recalls. It took me about four hours, and I made $100.
A lot has changed since that day in March 1989. Keys business,
based in Vici, Oklahoma, has expanded considerably. It now serves customers throughout western Oklahoma, southern Kansas and the Texas
Panhandle. Owned by Key and his wife, Leann, the company also runs
two branch offices in Hobbs and Carlsbad, New Mexico. In addition, Key
Welding runs 10 welding trucks and employs 15 people. And two years
ago, Key built a nearly 15,000-square-foot fabrication shop next to an
existing smaller facility.
But through it all, one thing has not changed for Key: an unrelenting focus on customer service coupled with boundless confidence in his
ability to succeed.

You put out a good product, be on the job on time

and put in 10 hours of work for 10 hours of pay, Key says.
Thats pretty much how weve made it. We provide good,
quality service and never take advantage of customers. We
work for a lot of good companies, and if you take care of
them, they take care of you. Its just that simple.

FORGING A FUTURE
Key got introduced to welding as a high school student
in 1979, working part time at Everetts Welding, an outfit owned and operated by his future father-in-law, Everett
Hutchens. The shop was in Vici, which is located about 100
miles northwest of Oklahoma City.
I really liked welding, he says. It really intrigued me
I was fascinated by how you could put two pieces of
metal together and make them stick.
After graduating from high school in 1982, Key earned
some oilfield experience while working as a roughneck on
drilling rigs for about a year. Then he went back to work
for Hutchens. Displaying the business instincts that would
serve him well in the years ahead, he told his father-in-law
that the oilfields around Vici represented a prime market
opportunity for new business.
I told him I wanted to work the drilling rigs, Key
says. I told him, Youve got to believe in me. I said Id
guarantee that if we bought a welding truck, wed pay it
off in a year. And we did, he adds, noting the truck cost
about $32,000 and he earned about $50,000 doing oilfield
welding.
Roughly six years later, Key told Hutchens he wanted to strike out on his
own and service just oilfield customers and build drilling rigs. He told me,
Go for it, and Ive been chasing rigs ever since March 13, 1989, Key says.
Everett was my mentor a pretty good guy, someone I looked up to, he
adds. We butted heads frequently. But in the end, he was still the man that
helped guide me in the right direction. He gave me a lot of the knowledge I
needed to run my own business.
STARTED OUT SMALL
Starting out with virtually nothing wasnt easy. His marketing strategy
was as basic as can be: Head out to drilling rigs. Ask rig officials if there was
any welding work to be done. Hand out business cards. Repeat. Day after day,
week after week, month after month.
Basically, I just busted my butt, he says, summing it up. I had to
hustle constantly. There was no time to relax. During one six-month-long
stretch, I dont think I saw Vici in the daylight more than three or four times.
But diligently making the rounds paid off. After two years, Key felt confident enough and sufficiently sound financially to build a 7,000-squarefoot shop. And after five years, he felt hed established himself in the industry.
But Key hit a critical turning point after about 10 years in business. Run
down from the rigors of years of working 70- to 90-hour weeks, he caught

pneumonia, recovered, then caught it again. I was

killing myself trying to keep it all together, he says.
So Leann and I talked, and we decided to grow the
business by hiring some people.
I was physically and mentally worn out and
couldnt do any more than what I was doing, he continues. So it was time to either slow down or get
bigger by hiring some employees.

A GROWING FLEET
The couple chose the latter option and never
looked back. As the company expanded, so did its
stable of trucks and equipment. Today, Key Welding

Solving problems 101:

Experience is
best teacher
Doing a great job and doing it on time
and on budget are great ways to keep customers satisfied. But to really seal the deal and form
long-standing business relationships, theres
nothing quite like taking a customer out of a
major jam with a little creative ingenuity.
Bill Key, the owner of Key Welding Inc.
in Vici, Oklahoma, can attest to that. About
six years ago, one of Keys customers called
and said a rotary bushing had fallen down a
30-inch-diameter conductor pipe at a drilling
pad in Oklahoma. The bushing, which weighs
about 500 pounds, came to rest 500 feet below
ground. That halted production an expensive
proposition for drilling companies.
Because Key has a good reputation for
providing top-notch customer service, the customer asked if he could help solve the problem.
Key came up with a deceptively simple solution. He suggested cutting roughly 2-inch-wide,
16-inch-long fingers into the end of a 10-footlong piece of 28-inch-diameter metal pipe. The
result was a series of notches that left the end of
the pipe looking similar to a crude kings crown,
Key says.
Then we tapered in the fingers just a little bit, he explains. Then we used the drilling
rig to lower the pipe into the conductor pipe.
Once you tag up, or know youre on bottom,
you apply a little bit of weight to the pipe and
turn it at the same time, and it twisted those fingers around and collapsed them into a basket
around the bushing.
The weight indicator on the drill told us
we had it, Key says, referring to the bushing. It
worked like a charm.
One of the head guys from the company,
who had flown in on a helicopter, was ecstatic,
he adds. He asked me how the hell I knew it
would work, and I told him that it was just the
experience I got from working 12- and 16-hour
days most of my life.

the Lincoln Electric Co.; theyre powered by four-cylinder diesel engines built

Key prefers cutting torches manufactured by Victor Technologies
International Inc. Theyre durable tools a good quality product, he notes.
Theyre the Cadillac of cutting torches. Shoot, Ive got some Victor torches
that are 20 years old and still work great.
The companys newer, larger fabrication shop is the hub of the business.
Its large enough that customers can drive trucks inside, where the companys
employees rebuild truck beds, piping and other components. Pretty much
anything that comes along, we can repair it, from frac tanks to oilfield
equipment, such as mud tanks, substructures and derricks, Key notes.
The shop is well equipped with machines that boost productivity and
efficiency, including:
One 5-ton-capacity overhead crane, made by Bridge Crane Specialists.
One shear machine for cutting iron, made by Betenbender
Manufacturing Inc.
One 250-ton press brake for bending metal, also made by Betenbender.
Three forklifts, two made by Genie (a Terex Corp. brand) and one built

I really liked welding. It really intrigued me I was

fascinated by how you could put two pieces of metal

Bill Key
The Betenbender press brake is used to bend metal plates, which is faster
than welding two plates together. The unit is capable of bending metal plates
that are up to 3/8-inch thick and 12 feet long. Before the plates are bent,
workers use the shear to cut them.
Its way faster than cutting them with an [acetylene] torch, Key notes.
In fact, using both machines together cuts fabrication time by a third or in
half, as opposed to welding parts together or cutting them with torches. The
overhead crane also is important to our efficiency.
HARD WORK, LONG HOURS
Like most oil and gas workers, Key Welding employees put in long

of Oklahoma, plus they receive extensive training in-house before theyre

allowed to work on drilling rigs. And the training doesnt just cover the
technical aspects of welding; it also centers on building a strong work ethic
and organizational skills traits that impress customers on job sites and lead
to repeat business, Key says.

A lot of people know how to weld, but not how to work. You
have to set the pace and guide them in the right direction.
Bill Key
What sets us apart is we train our people pretty heavily about six
months before we send them out in the field, he explains. But we teach
them not only how to weld, but how to work.
A lot of people know how to weld, but not how to work, he continues.
You have to set the pace and guide them in the right direction. You have to
know the next move before you finish the one youre on. You dont flip up
your hood and then wonder what to do next.
Key concedes that younger workers think hes hard on them. But Ive
had quite a few of them come back years later and tell me they were glad I
didnt give up on them because I helped make them what they are today, he
says. It helps to push them and guide them in the right direction, just like
my father-in-law did for me.

Eye on the Industry

OTC STILL A BIG DRAW

New events keep Offshore Technology Conference fresh for attendees
By Cory Dellenbach

housands of engineers, executives,

operators, scientists and other
oil industry professionals will be
gathering early next month for the Offshore
Technology Conference.
The conference, held May 4-7 at
NRG Park in Houston, is an annual event
geared toward the development of offshore
resources.

The Offshore Technology Conference

was founded by engineering and scientific
organizations as a response to the growing
need for technology of the exploration
and development of oil and gas reserves
offshore, says OTC Board Chairman Ed
Stokes.
The first conference was held in 1969
and has been held annually in Houston

OTC helps attendees understand the relationships between

different ideas and approaches so they can bring this expanded
knowledge back to their office.

since. The conference has grown in size

over the years. Attendance at OTC 2014
reached 108,300 the largest to date
and had delegates from 130 countries. The
sold-out exhibition was also the largest in
show history at 680,025 square feet, and
44 percent of exhibitors were international
companies.
THIS YEARS SHOW
Show organizers say response to OTC
2015 is still positive and strong despite the
dropping crude oil prices. For its technical
program, OTC received 1,313 paper
proposals this year the highest number
in the events history.
This response will ensure a highquality technical program, covering the
latest in technology innovations and
applications, as well as practices and
processes, Stokes says.
New to OTC this year is an event
called d5, which will be held the day after
OTCs traditional technical program and
exhibition, on May 8, at the University
of Houston.
Motivational speakers and group
discussions will spur creativity to help
identify the next big step for the energy
industry, in the way of technology gamechangers and leadership practices, Stokes
says. Designed to bring together the
most creative professionals from inside

Marcellus & Utica Extra

WORKING FOR
THE INDUSTRY
Ohio education program focuses on building,
training incoming workforce
By Greg Bates

imes have changed quite a bit

since the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy
Education Program (OOGEEP) was
founded 17 years ago.
However, one thing that has stayed
constant is the need for an education and
public outreach program in the Marcellus
and Utica shales. OOGEEP which was
awarded the Chairmans Stewardship
Award for energy education in 2014 by
the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact
Commission is doing all it can as a
leading educator.

OOGEEPs primary focus as an organization is on careers and workforce development, teacher workshops, scholarships,
science fairs, firefighter training (worked
with over 1,000 emergency responders), industry training, research, landowners and

guest speaker programs (over 300 presentations the last two years).
OOGEEP Executive Director Rhonda
Reda, who has been involved in the oil
and gas business for 28 years, is one of
the organizations founders. From the
programs beginning, there was a real
concerted effort for energy education.
At that time, one of the concerns as
an industry we had was the lack of energy
education curriculum that was being taught
in the classroom, Reda says. Immediately
after our founding, we organized teachers
from around the state to help us develop
specific science curriculum that meets
state and national science standards. Im
an industry person and so are many others,
and we had to reach out to the education
community to make sure that what we were
teaching definitely met science standards.

The top five positions needed in our industry are in the trades. Its
the welder, it is the machinist, it is the diesel mechanic, it is the CDL
truck driver and it is what we call a well tender or well pumper.
Rhonda Reda

Today, you hear the term STEM [Science,

Technology, Engineering and Math] a lot
and STEM education and thats really what
this has evolved into.
Another area OOGEEP was concerned
with, and still is, that has a direct correlation
to the lack of curriculum, is the one- to twogeneration gap in people pursuing careers
in the energy field.
Today, the average age of workers in the
gas and oil industry is 55. Reda says there is
a push in the industry to close the gap since
so many are hitting retirement age.
So what we were seeing is we didnt
have any young people coming into the
energy-related field, Reda says. Were
now starting to see more young kids
pursuing careers. It starts in the classroom,
it really does.

Jobs are out there. Students just need to be aware of their options. In Ohio
alone, Reda says there is a need for 2,000 trained welders.
In the three years since I came on board with OOGEEP, it really has
exploded in the sense of working with a lot of the schools, OOGEEP Safety
and Workforce Director Charlie Dixon says. Welders, for instance, theres
such a need for welders throughout this industry and other industries that
schools are starting to engage and add to their labs.
Back when OOGEEP was first getting started, high school students may
not have considered their career options until they were seniors. Now, some
states mandate that students have career counseling as early as middle school.
The organization is really starting to engage career and guidance
counselors at schools so that they have a greater understanding of whats
available for career paths, Dixon says.
Theres just so much opportunity within our industry that, how do we
engage these students? says Dixon. I think thats one of the things that we
do well here at OOGEEP with the development of our Careers in Ohio Series.
Weve been able to create some material that will attract the eyes of students
and the other potential employees for the industry.
The Careers in Ohio Series is a booklet listing 75 positions in the gas and
oil industry ranging anywhere from an attorney, which requires a law degree,
to a derrickhand, where a person only needs a high school diploma/GED.
That has really been a hit with career counselors to date, Dixon says.
They just love being able to go in [the booklet] and see the job description, see
what the typical education requirements are and then show students where
they can go and get education.
OOGEEP also just entered into partnership with the American Petroleum
Institute and will be launching a Career of the Month series starting this year.
It will be a two-year campaign that will promote the top careers needed in
the industry.
With its in-school education programs which are free for the schools
and teachers OOGEEP has been able to reach over 2,600 teachers and
100,000 students in Ohio. It doesnt want to stop there.
We have to continue to outreach to all of the K-12 schools, Reda says.
Weve now outreached to schools in all 88 counties. Whats our goal? In the
next five years, we would love to see that double. GOMC

Drill Pipe Solutions

For drill pipe cleaning, water jet

systems beat your usual method

You can get drill pipe back into service sooner and keep it working longer
when you clean it with NLB high-pressure water jets.
Our water jets (up to 40,000 psi) remove scale and hardened mud more
thoroughly than rattle-and-brush systems, making it easier to pass
inspections. Water jets also flush out debris and drilling fluids without
a separate rinse operation. That means fewer plugged drill heads, less
corrosion, and more work done between cleanings.
For drill pipe that easily passes inspections and goes longer between cleanings,
you cant beat water jets. To learn more about NLB cleaning systems, or ask
about converting your existing system, call 1-800-441-5059 today.

PLAYING IN

THE MUD

Recycling systems cut back on waste products, save on transportation costs

By Cory Dellenbach

WATER FOR DRILLING OPERATIONS CAN

BE TOUGH TO COME BY, AND DISPOSAL
costs for mud used in drilling can be expensive
for companies to haul away.
For oil and gas drilling companies trying to
control their costs on job sites, reducing the costs
of trucking in water and hauling away thousands
of pounds of waste have a big impact in the
long run.
Mud recyclers are one way to reduce waste
and cut expenses, and they can be used with
drilling operations of all sizes. These machines
pull in dirty mud slurry used in directional
drilling and separate the solids from the liquids in
order for the liquids to be used several times over.

The oil and gas industry is very stringent on keeping clean job sites,

The MR90 from Ditch Witch is unique in that it is the only unit available
that can be towed full of fluids. Mattheson says other units on the market
dont have trailers that are certified to haul that much material, so water must
still be hauled to the system and then away following the job.
Ditch Witch says its MR90 can be set up on a job site within 10 to
15 minutes.

Mud recyclers are one way to reduce waste and cut

expenses, and they can be used with drilling
operations of all sizes.
In the mid-sized market, which our unit fits best, its fair to say that
those drills are probably only going to be on and off a job in less than two to
three days, Mattheson says. So to go through the process of taking a unit
out and spending an hour to two hours to set it up just costs you money.
THE MR90
The MR90 Ditch Witchs first mud recycling system operates with
a 25 hp Kubota Tier 4 engine that provides the power for recycling, supply to
the drill and all hydraulic functions, including the shaker action.
The unit sports a 450-gallon mud tank a 110-gallon clean tank and
340-gallon first-pass mud tank. It also carries a 300-gallon freshwater tank
for extra drilling fluid capacity and can be used for equipment cleanup.
Slurry dirty mud is first delivered to the MR90s first-pass shaker
screen where it is shaken to separate mud returns from larger particles. Those
returns are collected in the rear hopper and later disposed of, or returned to

the ground after being mixed with a drying agent.

Mud is then pulled from the 340-gallon first-pass mud tank where it is
filtered again through six 2 1/2-inch hydrocyclones and final shaker screen.
The clean mud is then stored in the 110-gallon clean tank for future use in
drilling operations.
The unit has a shut-off on the tank, so when the tank gets full it will
automatically shut off to prevent spills. It also allows for the operator to move
away from the unit if needed.
We got into this industry because we make our own drill pipes that go
onto our own drills, our own electronics and our own beacons, Mattheson
says. We can design and manufacture the units here and we have quality
control. We know its going to work well with our units.
KEEPING THEM RUNNING
With any mud recycling system, its important for contractors to pay
attention to the screens and hydrocyclones on the units, according to John
Miller with Mud Technology.
Miller says routine maintenance on the machines will extend the life of
the complete mud system and the units individual components.
When it is time to move the equipment from one location to another,
take a few minutes and thoroughly wash the machine to remove all mud and
debris, Miller says.
Miller says its hard to determine the general lifespan of a mud system
when purchased new. Ground composition and the volume of use play big
roles in how long the system will operate effectively.
What I normally tell contractors is we have units that were built in
1996 that are still in use today and still going strong, Miller says. We also
have had units that had a life of less than five years of hard service that have
required refurbishing and upgrading. GOMC

BACKCOUNTRY BEAST
Ardco four-wheel-drive buggy boldly goes where other vehicles fear to tread
By Ken Wysocky

fter working in the Canadian oil and gas fields for more than 40
years, Derwin Bellrose has turned into a jack-of-all-trades contractor.
That versatility is reflected in the diverse services provided by the
company he owns, D & H Holdings and in one of his key machines:
an all-wheel-drive flatbed buggy made by Ardco, a division of Pettibone
Traverse Lift.

The Ardco can go through 4 feet of water. And if theres,

say, 2 or 3 feet of snow on a cut line, you can just drive
on top of it. You dont need a snow plow or any other
equipment to get through.
Derwin Bellrose

D & H Holdings is a general support services company based in Paddle

Prairie, Alberta. The business does a little bit of everything: opening up and
freezing in access routes to drilling pads in remote, rugged backcountry,
fighting forest fires, hauling operators to distant gas-plant processing sites,
pulling out vehicles stuck in swamps and excavating pipelines for repairs.
The common denominator in all those jobs and more? The Ardco K a bigwheeled buggy that serves as the companys workhorse.
I bought it last fall for about $200,000 and its been a real good
machine, says Bellrose, 59, who established his company in 1994 and

has been working in the oil patches of Alberta, British Columbia and the
Northwest Territories since he was 16 years old. I do quite a few different
things a little bit of everything.
We keep fairly busy because were always doing something somewhere,
he continues, noting that the company also owns a Caterpillar bulldozer,
a Komatsu backhoe, a mulcher made by Braun Machine Technologies, two
GT1000 tracked haulers made by Bombardier Inc., a Bombardier Muskeg
tracked machine and a 2006 Kenworth tractor cab. And since we work in
such remote areas, weve got to have a little bit of everything [equipment] on
hand, so if a customer asks if you can do something, you can do it.
One reason the Ardco buggy is so valuable: It can go just about anywhere.
As Bellrose points out, there arent any highways where the machine works

<< Opposite Page: An Ardco K 4x4 wheeled

in northwestern Alberta. Instead, theres

a lot of very rugged terrain, featuring
obstacles such as creeks, thick brush,
beaver dams, deep coulees, swamps and
muskeg (boggy land that can swallow
entire vehicles if operators arent careful).
D & H crews mainly use the Ardco
to help them cut roughly 20-foot-wide
swaths or cut lines through heavy
underbrush during winter, then grade
and water the newly cut pathways so
they freeze hard enough to hold much
heavier vehicles headed for gas field
drilling pads. The work typically starts in
early November and lasts through April,
Bellrose says. In summer, the ground is
too wet to work.
The Ardcos mobility stems from its
large Primex tires, which allow the vehicle
to traverse soft, wet terrain that would
hamper most other heavy vehicles. Made
by Alliance Tire Co., the tires measure 66 inches tall and 43 inches wide,
Bellrose says.
If theres no cold weather and we get a lot of snow early, and theres
no frost in the ground, it gets very muddy and you can get stuck quite easy,
Bellrose points out. Some muskeg are 50 feet deep you can sink a machine
and bury it out of sight.

We work for five different companies in the area, and

they all like that machine because we get so
much more work done in a day.
Derwin Bellrose

So if youve got a machine that can float very well, you get a lot of work,
he continues. The Ardco can go through 4 feet of water. And if theres, say, 2
or 3 feet of snow on a cut line, you can just drive on top of it. You dont need
a snow plow or any other equipment to get through.
The buggy weighs 21,500 pounds and measures just more than 25 feet
long and slightly more than 11 feet wide and 11 feet tall. Its payload capacity
is 15,000 pounds. The unit Bellrose ordered features an Allison six-speed
automatic transmission, a Cummins 190 hp turbo-diesel engine and John
Deere differentials that can be locked with the push of a button to boost
traction under the most difficult conditions. It also features a 20,000-poundcapacity winch on the front end, made by Ramsey Industries, and a
3,500-pound-capacity picker crane, made by F.lli Ferrari Corp. S.p.A.
Weve even used the picker crane to pick up a dead moose and swing it
on up to the deck, Bellrose notes.
Bellrose opted to buy the Ardco unit for two other reasons: speed and
reliability. The Ardco can travel up to about 27 mph, which is almost three

times as fast as other off-road vehicles hes owned. It makes us about 30

percent more productive, and the companies that hire us like that because
we can get more work done each day, Bellrose explains. The companies get
more bang for their buck.
Dependability is just as valuable, especially because D & H operates in
such remote areas, where it can take two or three weeks to get repair parts.
Youve got a limited window here in which to make money, so the last thing
you want is equipment breakdowns, Bellrose says.
That Ardcos been going since November and it hasnt stopped once,
except for a few days over the holidays, he adds. We work for five different
companies in the area, and they all like that machine because we get so much
more work done in a day. With the high-flotation tires, the Ardco can cross
thinner ice than other machines. And the tires dont disturb terrain as much
as tracks do.
Perhaps the best testament to the Ardcos value is the fact that Bellrose
has ordered another one. Its a very versatile machine, he explains. I plan
to put a 1,500-gallon water tank on it for watering [freezing] the snowfields. I
also might try putting a drill on the back of it, which we could use to test for
contaminated soil on well sites. It has a lot of potential. Im also considering
putting on other attachments, such as a backhoe or a snowplow.
The drill could open up a new market for us, he predicts. We wont
even have to open up cut lines to get to drilling sites because the Ardco
doesnt need them. Once other drilling companies recognize that we can get
to a remote site without first building a road, theyre going to want to use it
because it can save them a lot of money.
Its a very versatile machine, Bellrose concludes. Its very valuable to
our operations. GOMC

Conference in late March in Williston. The

conference, held on the Williston State
College campus, featured presentations,
industry-related panel discussions, product and opportunity exploration, networking opportunities and a trade show.
The Enhanced Bakken Supply Chain
will extend farther than Williston, according to DAWA Solutions Group President
Jeff Zarling.

Development. On the other hand, we

have regional manufacturers and logistics
companies that can serve the oil and gas
industry in a way that reduces costs and
turn-around times as this market begins
to mature.

The oil and gas industry

represents an opportunity for
our regional ag manufacturers
to diversify their markets.

CONNECTING EVERYONE
The industry uses high volumes of
commodities and an array of specialty
tools and equipment. However, Williston
Economic Development says the majority
of the products are located hundreds of
miles away and are expensive to purchase
and transport.
The initiative will attempt to bring
regional businesses offering the products
and services closer to drilling activity in
the Bakken formation. It will bring together
manufacturers, machinists, suppliers,
commodity sources, logistics companies
and manufacturing representatives that are
beneficial to both suppliers and operators.
One of our goals in 2015 is to help
more of our regional manufacturing firms
get connected to the oil and gas industry, says Wenko. Given
the magnitude and expected
duration of this $30 billion industry, now is the
time to grow and diversify
our economy throughout
the region.

We fully recognize the labor and other

challenges facing manufacturing in the
Williston Basin, and while we may need to
make widgets in Wahpeton, North Dakota,
it is important to own the supply chain in
Williston, Zarling says. The wellhead is
where the problems exist, the relationships
are built and the solutions are developed.
Zarling says the initiative will help
regional agriculture manufacturers who are
currently facing a downturn in that industry.
The oil and gas industry represents
an opportunity for our regional ag
manufacturers to diversify their markets,
Zarling says. We need to start connecting
those dots with regional manufacturers that
can deliver more cost-effective products
and services. The end result is a winwin with reduced costs for operators and
economic development and diversification
for companies and communities throughout
the region. GOMC

Safety First

FOCUS ON FRACKING

Exposure to silica is covered by a

previous OSHA Hazard Alert due to the
large amount of crystalline silica that can
pose health hazards if inhaled. Those
involved in moving and blending the sand,
and workers downwind of these operations,
had the highest silica exposures in testing
done by NIOSH. But even those workers
not in the immediate area had exposures
above the NIOSH recommended limits.

Hydraulic fracturing is the focus of new

OSHA safety alliance brochure
By Doug Day

new alliance involving the Occupational Safety and Health

Administration and several industry groups is hoping to prevent injuries, illness and deaths in the hydraulic
fracturing industry. While fracking is not
necessarily more dangerous than other exploratory operations, its growth exposes
many more workers to the risks inherent
in such activities.

Too many oil and gas industry workers are being

hurt or killed on the job. These tragedies are
preventable and we need to work together to
address hazards, prevent injuries and save lives.
Dr. David Michaels
A new brochure, Hydraulic Fracturing
and Flowback Hazards Other than Respirable
Silica, discusses the risks and prevention
techniques. It points out that there is no
data available about injuries in fracking but
says the risks have increased because of the
number of new fracking operations in the
past decade. In light of this, OSHA has
determined that additional information
concerning hydraulic fracturing and
flowback operations hazards should be
provided to educate and protect workers,
states the brochure.
Also participating in the alliance
are the National Service, Transmission,
Exploration & Production Safety (STEPS)
Network, the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),
and the National Occupational Research
Agenda Oil and Gas Extraction Council,
coordinated by NIOSH.
48

GOMC

Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary

of labor for OSHA, says 112 workers were
killed in 2013 in the oil and gas industry.
Too many oil and gas industry workers
are being hurt or killed on the job, he said
when signing the alliance agreement prior
to his keynote address at the Oil & Gas
Safety and Health Conference in Houston.
These tragedies are preventable and we
need to work together to address hazards,
prevent injuries and save lives.
The 27-page brochure covers risks
and mitigation techniques for each stage of
fracking operations.
Transport, rig-up and rig-down
More workers are on site during setup,
and the work area is congested with people
and multiple vehicles and machines. There
are also the dangers associated with such
things as material handling, lifting heavy
loads, falls from heights, confined spaces
and the operation of heavy equipment.
Mixing and injection
While the chemicals used in fracking
are diluted, exposure is possible while
unloading, mixing and blending those
chemicals. Along with the proper use
of personal protective equipment, it is
important to use proper identification
and signage, barricades, air sampling,
hazard communication and training to
reduce risk.

Pressure pumping
The operating plan should include
information about operating limits, energy
isolation, pressure monitoring and the
proper use of pressure relief devices.
Flammable materials may be present, so
proper prevention strategies include air
monitoring, the use of flame-resistant
clothing when necessary, and proper
hazard assessments and communication.
Flowback operations
The fluid flowing back is under very
high pressure and may contain debris such
as rocks and mud, equipment parts, and
dangerous gases and chemicals. The high
pressures also present the risk of fire,
explosion and high-energy releases.
Hydrogen sulfide and VOCs
Along with normal H2S strategies
to prevent exposure to the poisonous
gas, there is also a need to protect
workers from exposure to volatile organic
compounds and BTEX (benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes).
The publication has links to several

4. Netafim USA hydrocyclones

Hydrocyclones from Netafim USA separate
solids from water, based on the centrifuge principle.
Particles are spun against the wall of the hydrocyclone
and fall into a sedimentation tank. The clean liquid
moves upward to the center of the spiral and exits
the top outlet. The velocity at which the water flows
through the hydrocyclone determines the efficiency
of particle removal from the water. Its conical shape
accelerates the velocity of the water, increasing
centrifugal forces and maximizing separation. It is
easy to operate and maintain, with no moving parts,
fine-tuning, controls or electrical hook-ups required.
There is no buildup or clogging during separation.

14. DEL Tank Total Clean System
The Total Clean System from DEL Tank &
Filtration Systems takes the initial flow directly
from trucks, tanks or pits, and pumps it over a
scalping shaker, where all oversize debris, usually
8- to 10-mesh material, is removed. The remaining
slurry is pumped to primary hydrocyclone/shaker
units, where the sand fraction (74 microns) is
removed. Any solids remaining in the primary
hydrocyclone overflow and screen underflow
pass through the tilted plate baffle section of
the V-Tank. The remaining solids settle and are
conveyed to the pump suction of the recycle
pumps by the shaftless auger, then through sets of
recycle hydrocyclone/shaker units for additional
removal of solids, down to 37 microns. The
effluent overflow can then be treated with polymer
and pumped to a clarifier/thickener tank, where
remaining solids settle. The thickened underflow
can then be pumped to centrifuges for final solids
removal. 800/468-2657; www.deltank.com.

Case Studies

Dewatering/Separation Equipment,
Water and Wastewater Management
By Craig Mandli
SCREENING SYSTEM NEEDED FOR LUCIUS TRUSS SPAR
Problem
A contractor working on the Lucius Truss Spar in the Gulf of Mexico needed to identify a screen
design that would meet or exceed environmental requirements, and build a system to monitor
raw water intake design velocity. This project thus included both a regulatory component
(understanding the language and intent of the rule) and a technical constraint (designing and
confirming a robust intake structure and control system). The project had to be performed in a
step-wise fashion and executed quickly in support of the aggressive project schedule.

Solution
To support this work, Cook Legacy Water & Energy built a numerical model of the system
accounting for differing flow and pressure. Then the company designed and modeled a series of
intake structure alternatives, which were confirmed via computational fluid dynamics.

Result
This project allowed the contractor to build an environmentally friendly project ahead of schedule. 614/524-4588; www.waterscreen.com.

FILTRATION TUBES USED TO REMOVE SEDIMENT FROM POND

Problem
A community pond in Lenexa, Kansas, was in poor state due to decant water. The pond could no longer sustain
aquatic life and was a community eyesore. It was determined that approximately 6,000 cubic yards of sediment
would need to be removed to bring the pond back to a healthy status for aquatic life.

Solution
In order to properly remove sediment and clean the pond with minimum erosion and haul-away, Envirotubes
from Industrial Fabrics were used. The tubes were staged so that the 12-mil reinforced single-piece liner was
placed on the lowest terrace that had a 24-inch earth berm built on three sides around it. The liner was draped
over the berm and placed up and over the terrace to the next level. A sump well 24 inches deep was excavated
in the corner closest to the project pond to collect decant water and return it back to the pond using a 4-inch,
self-priming diesel pump. All terraces were graded completely flat for the tube with a 5-foot perimeter graded
at a 1/8-inch-per-foot slope to drain the water to the next lower terrace, or in the case of the lowest terrace to
the sump corner.

Result
The sediment was removed, and after a 120-day dewatering and dehydration period, the material shrunk at a ratio of 3-to-1 so that only 2,000 of the 6,000 cubic
yards removed had to be dealt with. Since the neighboring property was looking to add elevation to a sunken area, the remaining hardened sediment was used
as fill. 800/848-4500; www.envirotubes.com.

PORTABLE SHREDDERS ASSIST WITH OIL SPILL CLEANUP

Problem
In the first few weeks after the BP oil spill in 2010, T&T Marine Salvage worked to skim and recover oil
near the site of the Deepwater Horizon sinking. However, seaweed and trash in the area started clogging
the hydraulic pumps and valves aboard their offshore vessel. This forced the crew to halt operations to
clear the clogs, requiring a complete shutdown and dismantling of the pumps a process that took up to
three hours.

Solution
Rudy Teichman, president of T&T Marine Salvage, suggested the crew make use of the portable 3-HYDRO
shredder from JWC Environmental they had recently purchased but hadnt installed. The shredders steel
cutter teeth and low-speed, high-torque design would easily cut through the problematic seaweed, wood and
trash and allow the debris to pass through the 4-inch valves. The crew responding to the oil spill was given
the go-ahead to return to shore for the retrofit, and after a quick and seamless installation, was able to return
back to the spill site the same day.

Result
The shredder allowed the skimmer boats to tow the portable skimmers over to the offshore vessel and siphon the oil into the storage tanks in an uninterrupted
cycle, without clogging. They realized that a 3-HYDRO unit would be necessary for every offshore vessel working at the spill site in order to prevent debris clogs and
downtime. JWC Environmental understood the urgency of the request and was able to build and test the new grinders in one day a process that normally took
up to two weeks. The grinders shipped the next day in time for the remaining offshore vessels to return to shore for the retrofit. 800/331-2277; www.jwce.com.

SEPARATION SYSTEM RECYCLES FRAC WATER AT LOW COST

Problem
As much as 30 percent of the water pumped into the ground for hydraulic fracturing resurfaces
immediately as flowback water. In addition, an average of eight barrels of produced water, the
saline and chemical-rich byproduct of drilling, is brought to the surface over time for every barrel of
water. The traditional management method, purchasing freshwater and then trucking and disposing
of toxic wastewater, is costly and carries a steep environmental risk. Industrial Systems Inc. in
Delta, Colorado, a designer and manufacturer of relocatable water tanks to fracking operators,
sought a cost-effective and efficient way to manage this tremendous amount of liquid waste.

Solution
OriginOils Electro Water Separation Technology offers a high-speed, chemical-free method for efficiently extracting oils, suspended solids, insoluble organics
and bacteria from frac flowback and produced water. By circulating wastewater through reactor tubes, the system applies low-voltage electro-pulses that coagulate
the oil and suspended solids. The oil and solids are then lifted to the surface by a cloud of microbubble generated by a second surge of pulses in the flotation
chamber. The process, integrated with downstream polishing into a CLEAN-FRAC 1000 system, allows operators to clean and reuse water on site instead of
trucking for disposal.

Result
OriginOil successfully demonstrated its 1,000 bpd commercial-capacity system, coupled with an infiltration membrane system from TriSep Corporation and
the CLEAN-FRAC 1000, and proved to remove 99.8 percent of turbidity, 100 percent of suspended solids and 99.2 percent of oil from the water. The results
from the demonstration have been verified by Lizard Analytical Laboratories. By reusing water, operators can save an average of $150,000 per 50,000 barrels.

Product Spotlight
Coker crane technology minimizes load
sway, monitors equipment performance
By Ed Wodalski
Clam-shell bucket coker cranes from Konecranes are designed to
safely and consistently move large volumes of petroleum coke in hot,
moist, dusty environments. The overhead cranes typically span up to 46
meters (150.9 feet) and have a lifting capacity of 55 tons.
Unlike what you might call a standard crane, the coker crane is
not so much capacity as it is features, says Chad Rooney, key account
manager for Konecranes. Coker cranes can be highly technical, but it
depends on the clients willingness to use that technology and the benefits
to increase safety and productivity.
Drives and gearboxes are engineered to reduce maintenance, while
DynA Load Control technologies help reduce structural stress, increase
efficiency and prolong equipment life.
The DynAPilot control minimizes load sway from bridge and trolley
motions, reducing collisions between the bucket and pit walls or hopper,
to maximize throughput while preventing equipment damage. It also
makes it easier to transfer a full bucket of material into the hopper without
spillage for optimal performance.
Other technologies include the DynAGrab load control that
synchronizes the holding and closing lines for easier operation, DynATrak
bridge steering that controls travel along the rails, preventing premature
wear of crane wheels, and DynAReg regenerative network braking system
that captures electrical power generated by braking forces and returns it
to the electrical grid, eliminating the need for external braking resistors.
Both the DynAPilot and DynAGrab feature single joystick control for
one-hand operation.

ARE ALL

Our operator made a successful pick. But what made it successful was the team that supported him. The oilers who
maintained the crane and kept it ready to operate. The drivers who hauled the equipment to the site. The people that
worked on the lift plan. And this team is part of a much bigger team, the ALL Family of Companies.
