Normalization Case Study

INTRODUCTION
The following case study describes some of the reports used by a small furniture
manufacturing company.
Pine Valley Furniture Company
Pine Valley Furniture Company is a small manufacturer of all-wood furniture. The
company has a number of product lines, including dinette sets, stereo cabinets, wall
units, desks, living room furniture and bedroom furniture. Pine Valley markets its
furniture to a wide variety of retail outlets. At the present time the company has about
50 employees and sales have been increasing by about 25% per year.
REQUIREMENTS
You are required to do the following:
a)

Normalize all the reports that you find in the case.

(If you print a hard copy of this Case, use the blank space on each page for
your rough work. Note: your normalization work will not be marked;
only the ERD will be.)

b)

Develop an ERD (Entity Relationship Diagram) for the enterprise's data base.
Your E-R diagram will show all the entities and all the relationships among them.
Make sure that you:
Name each entity in the E-R diagram
Identify the Primary Key (with PK-> notation)
Identify any Foreign Key (with FK-> notation)
Show each relationship using Crowsfoot notation
(Do not put in dependent attributes - the diagram will get too cluttered.)

You will hand in a one page ERD. Hand drawn is fine. As a suggestion, draw the ERD In
Landscape mode. Remember to put your Name and Student Number on it. The ERD
is due at the start of the Final Exam.A sample is shown below. It has nothing to do with
Pine Valley. It simply demonstrates the expected format.

HINT: In your Second Normal Forms, you should have three relations. In one, the
OPERATION DESCRIPTION, WORK CENTRE NO. and WORK
CENTRE NAME depend on OPERATION NO. while in another the
STD SETUP TIME and STD OPER TIME depend on PRODUCT NO.
and OPERATION NO. combined. The last of the second normal form
relations is for you to figure out (it's easy).
