FIRST NATO MISSION FOR THE ROMANIAN NAVY


Frigate Regele Ferdinand (King Ferdinand) departed from the Port of Constanta on
October 5, 2005, for the first NATO mission of the Romanian Navy.
The participation in Operation Active Endeavour, taking place in the Mediterranean
Sea represents the first mission of the frigate and the 203 seamen onboard. The frigate is
supposed to conduct first a common training
session with the Turkish Navy, in
preparation of the mission. As of October
15, the frigate will be engaged, for two
months, in operation Active Endeavour.
Frigate King Ferdinand is the first
of the two frigates acquired by the
Romanian Navy from Great Britain. It has a
crew of 19 officers, 73 WOs, one NCO, 110
contract enlisted personnel and one civilian.
The ship has the following technical
characteristics: Displacement - 4900 tdw,
Length-148.2 m, Width-14.75 m, Max. Speed-30 Kn, Max. Draught- 4.6 m, Decks-7, Range4500 NM, weapons: one 76 mm Otto Melara gun, torpedo lunchers, computer-assisted
navigation system, TERMA passive jamming systems, electronic warfare systems, nine radars.
The propelling system consists of 4 Rolls-Royce turbines, 4 Diesel generators (1 MW at
450 V/60 Hz/3 phases each), permanent air conditioning, 90 day-provisions storing and
refrigeration.
RECORD-SEIZE IN AFGHANISTAN
A Romanian ANA Training mobile escort team, working with 261 Afghan and two
American troops, succeeded in seizing more than three tons of hashish, ammunition and
weapons in a search mission covering an area of 90 square kilometers in Paktia district, about
100 km south of Kabul, on October 5.

The seize consisted of 3.3 tons of hashish, 70 hand grenades, 90 grenade heads, about
15,000 cartridges, one AG-7 grenade launcher hits, one gun projectile, one 37 mm thrower, six
light machine guns, two carbines and one machine gun. The military team also discovered a
hashish crop extending on an area of about 5,000 square kilometers.
ANA Training IV Detachment, part of the ENDURING FREEDOM mission, is made
up of 46 Romanian troops whose main tasks are to train the Afghan soldiers in specific military
drills and to join Afghan National Armed Forces units in various missions.
BRITISH-ROMANIAN AIR EXERCISE
Romanian and British Air Forces conduct a bilateral flight exercise LONE FOIL
2005 at Mihail Kogalniceanu Airfield, from October 7 to 17.
Romania participates with 130
troops, 8 MiG 21 LanceRs and 2 IAR330 helicopters while Great Britain
brought in 200 troops, 6 TORNADO
GR-4s and 2 tactical transport aircraft.
The goal of the exercise is to train
pilots in Romanian-British mixed
crew/common flights in close air support,
air defence, offensive and air interdiction
missions as well as in support methods
and procedures in peacekeeping and
humanitarian operations. The ways to
increase interoperability of NATO
structures
involved
in
common
operations are to be analyzed during the exercise.
The Air Forces of the two countries conduct common training sessions at Mihail
Kogalniceanu Airfield since 2003. This exercise continues the exercise that took place at
Lossiemouth Air Base (Great Britain), from July 14 to 17.
