1. RBI signed currency swap agreement with Central Bank of Sri Lanka - The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) signed a
currency swap agreement of $ 400million with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. RBI said that the agreement will allow the
Central Bank of Sri Lanka to make withdrawals of US Dollar or Euro in multiple tranches up to a maximum of USD 400
million or its equivalent. The agreement will be valid for a period of three years.
2. RBI reduced Repo Rate by 25 basis points!: The Reserve Bank of India on 4th March 2015, reduced the repo rate by 25
basis points from 7.75% to 7.50% with immediate effect ahead of its seventh bi-monthly policy review. The cut in the
policy rate by RBI will help in lowering interest rate for individual and corporate borrowers and make home loan and
corporate loans cheaper.

There has been no change in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) 4 per cent, and the reverse repo rate under the LAF (Liquidity
Adjustment Facility) stands adjusted to 6.50 per cent, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to
8.50 per cent with immediate effect.

3. Govt. & RBI signed an agreement on Monetary Policy Framework:


According to the agreement, the government has set a target for RBI to bring
down inflation below six per cent by January 2016. If the RBI fails to meet the
target, it will have to report to the government the reasons for the failure to
achieve the target, what remedial action it proposes to take and estimate of
the time period within which the target would be achieved. The agreement
will put in place a framework of a modern monetary policy to meet the
challenges of an increasingly complex economy. The Agreement, in line with
the recommendations of the RBI's Urjit Patel committee, will smoothen the
monetary policy scene. One rupee currency note will be soon into the
circulation: According to Reserve Bank of India press release Reserve Bank
is all set to bring back the currency note of one rupee denomination back into
circulation. One rupee notes will be printed by the Government of India. The
government had discontinued printing of one rupee notes in November 1994
due to higher printing costs.
4. RBI inks deal with European Central Bank (ECB) - RBI and European
Central Bank (ECB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on
cooperation in the field of central banking. The aim of the deal is to exchange
of information, policy dialogue and technical cooperation between the two
institutions.
5. RBI has increased the limit for foreign exchange (FOREX) remittances
under Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) from $125,000 to $250,000 (Rs.
1.5 crore) per person per year. Under the LRS, Indians can open, maintain
and hold foreign currency accounts with banks outside India for carrying out
transactions, without permission from the RBI.
6. RBI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Brazils Central Bank - Banco Central do Brasil (BCB)
on Supervisory Cooperation and Exchange of Supervisory Information.
7. RBI has lifted a ban on carrying Indian bank notes of Rs 1,000 and 500 denominations to and from Nepal and Bhutan.
RBI had imposed this restriction since May, 2000.The Indian central bank, however, has put a limit on carrying such notes
at Rs 25,000 per person

Highlights Union Budget: 2015/16 : Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the 2015 Union Budget in
the parliament on 28th February, 2015. This is the first full-fledged budget of the second NDA government.
Highlights of Union Budget 2015 -16:

Major Points
1. Budget estimates of expenditure: Rs. 17 .77 lakh cr., of which Non Plan is Rs. 13.12 lakh cr., and Plan is Rs. 4.65 lakh cr.
2. Quoting PAN has been made compulsory for transactions involving more than Rs. 1 Lakh.
3. Health insurance premium exemption has been increased to Rs 25,000 from the current Rs 15,000.
4. Rigorous imprisonment of 10 years under Black Money Law.
5. Benami Property Transaction Bill will help tackle black money transactions in real estate soon.
6. Another Rs 1,000 crore allocated to the Nirbhaya fund.
7. Indian gold coin with Ashok Chakra will soon be introduced.
8. GAAR implementation deferred by 2 years to April 2017.
Taxation:

Service Tax rate hiked to 14% from 12.36%


Wealth tax to be abolished
Additional 2% surcharge on people earning over Rs 1 cr., this step is expected to fetch Rs. 9,000 cr.
Rate of corporate tax to be reduced to 25% over the next four years.
Total exemption of up to Rs. 4,44,200 can be achieved

Fiscal/ Revenue deficit


1. Fiscal deficit is seen at 3.9% of GDP in 2015/16, which will meet the challenging fiscal target of 4.1% of GDP
2. The govt. remains committed to meeting the medium term fiscal deficit target of 3% of GDP
3. The Current account deficit is below 1.3% of GDP
4. The Revenue Deficit is expected to be 2.8% in 2015-16
Growth
1. GDP growth seen at between 8% and 8.5% y-o-y

Inflation
1. The govt. expects consumer inflation to remain close to 5% by March, opening room for more easing of monetary
policy.
2. The monetary policy framework agreement with the RBI clearly states the objective of keeping inflation below 6%

Agriculture:
1. Rs. 25,000 crore earmarked for Rural Infrastructure Development Bank
2. In order to improve soil health and the Agriculture Ministry's organic farming scheme, Paramparagat Krishi Vikas
Yojana will be supported
3. Rs. 5,300 crore will be earmarked for micro-irrigation, watershed projects, and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana
4. Farm credit targets increased to Rs. 8.5 lakh cr. from Rs. 8 lakh cr.
Infrastructure:
1. Investment in Infrastructure sector increase by Rs. 70,000 crore in the year 2015/16 over year 2014-15 from the
Centre's funds and resources of Central public sector enterprises.
2. Tax-free bonds will be issued for the projects in rail road and irrigation sectors.
3. Public - Private Partnership (PPP) model to be revitalized for infrastructure development.
4. Second unit of Kudankulam nuclear power station to be commissioned in 2015/16.
5. Rs. 150 crore allocated for Research & Development.
6. NITI to be established and involvement of entrepreneurs, researchers to foster scientific innovations.
7. 5 more Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) of 4,000 MW each will be set up, under the plug and play model with total
investments of Rs one lakh crore.
Education:
1. The budget allocation for education stood at Rs 68,968 crore.
2. Two more Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) will be set up in states of Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh.
3. Six new All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) institutes will be set up in states of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab,
Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and Assam.
4. One new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will be set up in Karnataka.
5. Indian Institute of Mines in Dhanbad, Jharkhand will be upgraded to IIT.
6. Post Graduate institute of Horticulture will be set up in Amritsar.
7. University of Disability Studies will be set up in Kerala.
8. Centre of film production, animation and gaming to be set up in Arunachal Pradesh.

1. Allocation of Rs. 2,46,726 crore for Defence sector; an increase of 9.87 per cent over last year.
2. Focus on Make in India for quick manufacturing of Defence equipment.

Welfare Schemes:
1. Six crore toilets to be constructed across the country under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. 50 lakh toilets already
constructed in 2014/15.
2. Housing for all by 2020.
3. Up-gradation 80,000 secondary schools.
4. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) will be further be expanded from 1 crore to 10.3 crore.
5. New scheme for physical aids and assisted living devices for people aged over 80.
6. Govt. to use Rs. 9000 crore unclaimed funds in Public Provident Fund (PPF)/Employment Provident Fund (EPF) for
Senior Citizens Fund.
7. Rs. 5,000 crore additional allocations for MGNREGA.
8. Nayi Manzil scheme An integrated education and livelihood scheme, to enable minority youth who do not have a
formal school-leaving certificate to obtain one and find better employment.
9. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana: It is a low premium life insurance scheme. Premium payable for this
scheme is Rs.330 per year i.e. less than Rs.1 per day. Risk coverage of Rs.2 Lakh in case of death for any reason.
10. Atal Pension Yojana: Under the scheme, the subscriber would receive the fixed pension of in the range Rs 1,000-Rs
5,000 per month on attainment of 60 years, depending on contribution which would vary at the age of joining. The
minimum age of joining the scheme is 18 years and maximum age is 40 years. The minimum period of contribution by
the subscriber under the scheme would be 20 years.
Renewable Energy:
1. Rs. 75 crore embarked for adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles in 2015/16.
2. Renewable power capacity to be increased by 175 gigawatts by 2022 as part of the governments plan to supply
electricity to every household. India will seek to add 100 gigawatts of photovoltaic capacity, 60 gigawatts of wind
power, 10 gigawatts of biomass and 5 gigawatts of hydro projects

Tourism
1. The development schemes for churches and convents in old Goa will be implemented.
2. From now on Hampi, Elephanta caves, Forests of Rajasthan, Leh palace, Varanasi, Jallianwala Bagh, Qutub Shahi tombs
at Hyderabad will be under the new tourism scheme.
3. From now on Visa on Arrival will be available for 150 countries.
Financial Sector
1. The Forward Markets Commission (FMC) will be merged with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
2. Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) registered with RBI above Rs. 500 crore and above will be considered for
notifications as financial institution in terms of the SARFAESI Act, 2002.
3. Development of Mudra Bank with corpus of Rs. 20,000 crore for micro-finance to help SC/ST entrepreneur.
Policy reforms
1. Propose to create a universal social security system for all Indians.
2. Allocation of 346.99 billion rupees for rural employment guarantee scheme in 2015/16.
3. To bring a new bankruptcy code in 2015/16.
4. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said He will move to amend the RBI act this year, and provide for a monetary policy
committee.

Highlights Economic Survey: 2015/16


Economic Survey 2014 - 15, is tabled by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on 27th February, 2015 in the Parliament. The
Economic Survey is compiled by Chief Economic Advisor of India Arvind Subramanian.
Major Points:
Fiscal Deficit
1. India must meet its medium-term fiscal deficit target of 3 per cent of GDP
2. Government will stick on to fiscal deficit target of 4.1% of GDP in 2014/15
3. Govt. should ensure expenditure control to reduce fiscal deficit.
4. Expenditure control and expenditure switching to investment key.

Economic Growth
1. 2015-16 GDP growth seen at over 8% year-on-year.
2. Double digit economic growth trajectory now a possibility.
3. Economic growth at market prices seen between 8.1-8.5 per cent in 2015-16 on new GDP calculation formula.
4. Total stalled projects seen at about 7 per cent of GDP, mostly in private sector.
Current Account Deficit (CAD): CAD estimated to fall 1% of GDP in coming fiscal year.

Inflation
1. Inflation shows declining trend in 2014-15
2. Inflation likely to be below central bank target by 0.5-1%age point
3. Lower inflation opens up space for more monetary policy easing
4. Government and central bank need to conclude monetary framework pact to consolidate gains in inflation control

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has presented his maiden Rail Budget in the Parliament on 26 th February, 2015. This is the
first full-fledged rail - budget of the NDA government.

Highlights of 14th Finance Commission Report:

The Government of India has accepted the recommendation of the 14th Finance
Commission which was headed by Dr. Y.V. Reddy. The recommendation is for the five-year period 2015-16 to 2019-20. The
14th Finance Commission consists of a Chairman and four members.

Key Points of 14th Finance Commission report:


1. Share of states in the centre's tax revenue is increased to 42% from 32%.
2. As per the increased devolution suggested in the report, the states will get Rs 3.48 lakh crore in 2014-15 and Rs 5.26 lakh
crore in 2015-16.
3. Tax devolution is the primary route resource transfer to states.
4. Grants should be distributed to states for local bodies on the basis of the 2011 population area.
5. A basic grant and a performance grant the ratio of basic to performance grant be 90:10, with respect to panchayats;
and 80:20 in the case of municipalities.
6. The percentage share of states to continue as before and follow the current mechanism to the tune of Rs 55,097 crore.
After implementation of GST, disaster relief will be given according to the recommendations of the Finance Commission.
7. A total of Rs. 1,94,821 crore will be given to 11 states on account of expenditure requirements of states, tax devolution
and revenue mobilization capacity of the states.

About MUDRA Bank:


In the Union Budget 2015/16, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has proposed to set up a Micro Units Development and Refinance
Agency (MUDRA) Bank to encourage entrepreneurship among SC/STs and OBCs. The Mudra Bank will refinance institutions
through a Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana.
Capital Requirement: The MUDRA Bank will set up with the capital of Rs. 20,000 crores and would be responsible of
regulating and refinancing all Micro - finance Institutions (MFI). A sum of Rs. 3,000 crores would also be provided to Mudra
Bank, to create Credit Guarantee corpus for guaranteeing loans being provided to the micro enterprises.
Micro - Finance: The objective of the Micro Finance is to give low income and poor people an opportunity to become self sufficient by providing financial services, saving money, borrowing money and insurance.
The Mudra Bank would primarily be responsible for 1. To make policies and guidelines for micro/small enterprise financing business
2. Registration and regulations of MFI entities
3. Approval /rating of MFI entities
4. To establish financing practices to area off indebtedness.
5. To ensure proper client protection principles and methods of recovery
6. To promote right technology solutions for the last mile
7. To formulate and implement a Credit Guarantee scheme for providing
guarantees to the loans which are being extended to micro enterprises

Financial/Banking News

1. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) projected India's growth rate to 7.8 per cent in 2015-16. It also forecast India's
growth rate would be 8.2 percent in 2016-17.
2. HDFC Bank launches Chillr mobile app: HDFC Bank partnered with MobME, a Kochi-based technology firm to launch a
mobile app Chillr. It is a first-of-its kind application that is linked directly to the customer's bank account.
Features of Chillr app:
i. The mobile app will allow HDFC customer to instantly transfer money to any contact in their phonebook.
ii. HDFC Bank customers can transfer money to anyone in India, once they download the app and register themselves.
iii. Customer can make 10 transactions in a day with a maximum limit of 5,000.
3. The monthly limit for transaction is set at 50,000. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector increased
to 49% from 26%.
4. Exim Bank will provide a line of credit of USD 22.5 million to Gambia for financing eligible goods, machinery, equipment
and services including consultancy services for the greater Banjul area in Gambia.
5. Ratnakar Bank Ltd. (RBL) has ties up with IBM to use the latter's MobileFirst Platform to build, deploy and manage its
applications. The deal aimed at improving the overall customer experience and stickiness, besides employee engagement.
RBL will also integrate the IBM MobileFirst Platform with its core banking system to ensure secure transactions.
6. Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has joined hands with Apollo Munich Health Insurance, to provide specialized health and
personal accident products to Indian Overseas Bank customers.
7. Govt. to invest Rs. 6,990 crore in nine public sector banks: To boost capital and meeting global risk norms, Govt. will
invest Rs. 6,990 crore in nine public sector banks including SBI, Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Punjab National Bank (PNB).
This is the first tranche of capital infusion for which the government had allocated Rs. 11,200 crore in the budget for 201415. Among the beneficiaries, SBI leads the pack with a capitalization of Rs. 2,970 crore, followed by BoB Rs. 1,260, PNB Rs.
870 crore and Canara Bank Rs. 570 crore.
8. World Bank projects 6.4% economic growth in India in 2015.
9. International Monetary Fund projects 6.4% economic growth in India in 2015.
10. YES Bank signs MoU with Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and Wells Fargo to increase lending to micro,
small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India.

11. Indias foreign exchange reserves reached US$ 322.135 bn. for the week ended January 16.
12. International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected that India will grow 6.5% in 2016 and will surpass China in its latest World
Economic Outlook report. IMF also forecast India growth rate for 2015 at 6.3% which will up from 5.8% in 2014.
13. Indias top private sector Bank HDFC was named among 50 most valuable banks in 2014 with a market capitalization of
US$ 41.58 bn. It was ranked at 45th position. The top 50 list is compiled by Relbanks. State Bank of India was ranked at 51
and ICICI Bank was ranked at 55th position. Well Fargo of the USA is the largest bank in the world based on market
capitalization with US$ 284.39 bn. which is followed by Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and JP Morgan
Chase & Co.
14. China beats India in November FII inflows: HSBC - Among Asian economies, China regained the top position as the most
loved market, pushing India down to second position in the region, while Thailand was placed at the third spot, it said.
15. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a loan of up to US$200 million with YES Bank Ltd which will provide
financing assistance to low income women borrowers and small - scale farmers in rural India.
ICICI Bank in News
E-wallet 'Pockets' Digital Bank service launched by ICICI bank: ICICI bank has launched E-wallet 'Pockets' service to
allow any individual to instantly make transactions on a mobile phone with or without a bank account. The service is also
known as Digital Bank , which allow customers to deposit or transfer from any bank account through a debit card or Net
banking account and start transacting immediately on a mobile without any documentation. A customer can pay bills,
recharge, book movies tickets etc. Users can send money to any e-mail ID, mobile number, Facebook friends, and bank
accounts.
ICICI Bank introduced its banking services on Twitter, which will help customers transfer money through the micro blogging Web site.
Key points:
i.
Savings account customers can register their Twitter account with a onetime password and link their account
number.
ii. To avail this benefit both the recipient and sender need to have a Twitter account.
iii. Customer can send up to Rs. 5,000 per transaction with a limit of Rs. 10,000 per day. Online NEFT charges will apply.
This facility also enables customers to view their account balance, view the recent transactions and recharge mobile
pre - paid through Twitter.
Indias first contact - less debit & credit cards were launched by ICICI Bank. The cards, which are based on the near field
communication (NFC) mechanism, will allow customers to manage their accounts without having to insert or swipe the
cardsat the point of sale terminal. The card is similar to the Metro card used in Metro trains. You can simply tap it on the
terminal and pay for your purchases.
ICICI Bank launched its own version of Digital Village Project by adopting the Akodara Village in the Sabarkantha district
of Gujarat.

State Bank of India to finance small tea growers in North East: Soon, SBI will provide finance of Rs 100 crore which
will help 3,000 small tea growers in the North East states. Finance will be provided to tea growers who have proper basic
documents of their existing garden as per Tea Board of India norms. "
The State Bank of India and Indian Army has signed an agreement on Defence Salary Package. The agreement is tailormade to suit the requirements of serving soldiers, pensioners and families. The basic features of the MoU include a number
of free / concessional services like free drafts, free cheque books, free funds transfers to any bank in India through RTGS /
NEFT, free ATM cards etc.
Reliance partnered with SBI for Payment Bank Licence.RIL will be the promoter and SBI will be the joint venture partner
with equity investment of up to 30%.
SBI launched Chota ATMs in Kerala: SBI partnered with Ezetap, the mobile point - of - sale service provider, has launched
Chota ATM in Kerala. Chota ATM will allow kirana store owners, taxi drivers, small businessmen, and traders who are
dealing with customers to turn their mobile device into both a cash withdrawal point as well as a credit/debit card
payment terminal.

1. Indian Railways launched its own RuPay pre-paid card in collaboration with
the Union Bank of India.The card will enable passengers to book their Rail
tickets and do shopping using RuPay pre-paid debit cards. Card can be
availed from either the Union Bank or the IRCTC. Govt. approved33%
women reservation in police forces of all Union Territories: The
government of India has approved 33 percent reservation for women in
police forces of all Union territories (UTs) including Delhi police, through
direct recruitment in non-gazetted posts like constables to sub-inspectors.
The reservation will also cover reserved categories like SCs, STs and
OBCs.The reservation would apply to all existing vacancies in police forces
of the UTs and any vacancy arising later.
2. Railway's Kaya Kalp council will be headed by Ratan Tata: A new
innovative council of Indian Railways, called 'Kaya Kalp', formed to turn
around the ailing state-run rail network will be headed by noted
industrialist Ratan Tata.Along with Ratan Tata, the Kaya Kalp council will
also have two railway union leaders Shiv Gopal Mishra and M Raghuvaiah.
3. Yahoo has decided to shut down its operations and research center in
Beijing, China.Yahoo Inc. is an American multinational Internet corporation
headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.
4. US and Russia remain worlds biggest arms exporters study - According
to the new study of Stockholm International Peace Institute (SIPRI); Russia
remains the worlds second biggest seller of arms behind the United States,
increasing its share by 37 percent in 2010-2014. China has overtaken Germany to become third-biggest arms exporter in
the World.

6. Supreme Court rejects reservation to jats under OBC quota: Supreme Court rejects the March 2014 notification of UPA
government which included reservation to Jats under OBC quota in nine states of India which includes; Bihar, Gujarat,
Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
7. LIC to help Indian Railways in development projects: According to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, LIC has taken the
task of supporting Indian Railways and it is a commercial decision. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) will invest Rs
1.5 Lakh crore in Indian Railways over next 5 years for development of various commercially viable projects.The
investment would be done in bonds issued by various railway entities such as Indian Railways Finance Corporation,
beginning next fiscal.
8. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley unveiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in London. The nine-foot bronze statue of
Gandhi was created by Phillip Jackson, a renowned British sculptor, and will stand in the company of Nelson Mandela,
Winston Churchill, and Abraham Lincoln, among others.
9. Apurva, a new calf cloned by National Dairy Research Institute: National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) have cloned
a female calf using cells (somatic cells) from the buffalo's urine.The calf named Apurva and it is the tenth cloned calf in the
NDRI, since the institute produced world's first cloned buffalo calf in 2009.This is probably first case in the world across
the species, in which somatic cells has been isolated from urine and cloned calf has been produced.
10. US embassy in closed in Saudi Arabia: United States has closed its embassy in Saudi Arabia for indefinite period, due to
heightened security concerns at US diplomatic facilities.
11. According to the Mastercard's latest Index of Women's Advancement, India is the lowest among 16 Asia Pacific countries
in economic parity for women.Indian women stand even lower than their counterparts from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the
survey said.India (44.2), Bangladesh (44.6) and Sri Lanka (46.2) had scores below 50, indicating that much more needs to
be done to achieve gender parity.Across the region, New Zealand had the highest overall Index score of 77, followed by
Australia (76), the Philippines (72.6) and Singapore (70.5).
12. Zebpay introduces its 'bitcoin' mobile wallet in the country, by which a user can buy, sell and transact in bitcoins which is
presently valued at around $280 per unit.Bitcoins are digital money that are generated and their value is determined
based on their demand and supply.
13. PM launches first indigenous rotavirus vaccine: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the first indigenously
developed and manufactured rotavirus vaccine, which will help in diarrhoea cases. The vaccine is developed through a
collaboration between India and the United States, is expected to help bring about a significant reduction in the 100,000
infant deaths caused by the rotavirus diarrhoea in India.
14. Kathmandu-Varanasi bus service launched: The Government of Nepal and India has launched a direct bus service from
Kathmandu and Varanasi.The bus service was launched under the ambit of Motor Vehicle agreement between Nepal and
India signed during 18th SAARC summit.This will be the second bus service between Nepal and India, after the one
connected between Kathmandu and New Delhi.
15. Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda declared 10 February as the National Deworming Day.
National Deworming Day is an initiative focused on reducing the threat of parasitic worm infections, a widespread health
issue affecting over 24 crore children in India alone.
16. India ranked 136 in World Press freedom Index 2015. Finland on the first position followed by Norway and Denmark.
17. TRAI amended the MNP regulations, effective from May 3, 2015: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India amended the
mobile number portability (MNP) regulations to allow users to change their service provider in any part of the country
while retaining the number. Pan India Mobile number portability will be effective from May 3, 2015 which helps user or
subscriber to retain the same mobile number on relocating to anywhere in India.
18. Government give green signal for 15000 MW grid-connected solar projects: The Government of India has given the green
signal to implement the scheme for setting up of 15,000 Mega Watt Grid-connected Solar Photo Voltaic Power projects
under the National Solar Mission. The scheme will be implemented through NTPC and NTPC VidyutVyapar Nigam Limited.
19. Facebook and Reliance Communications (RCom) join hands to launch Internet.org in India. The app, aimed at low income
and rural users, will offer access to more than 30 web services, including job listings, healthcare and education sites, as
well as Facebook's own social network and messaging services.
20. Indians rank 16th on leaked HSBC list: In the new HSBC list of Swiss bank account holders, Indians ranked on 16th

1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to set up the Shaheed Bhagat Singh PG Institute for Horticulture Research and
Education at Amritsar, Punjab.The announcement was made on the occasion of 84th Martyrdom Day at the National
Martyrs Memorial in Hussaini wala, near Firozpur in Punjab.
2. The government of India has decided to set up four new agricultural and
horticultural universities in the country. New Agricultural universities will be come
up in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan and the horticultural universities will be set
up in Telangana and Haryana state.
3. US NGO & MetLife to provide microfinance in UP: Grameen Foundation India
(GIF) has partnered with MetLife Foundation to provide microfinance in Uttar
Pradesh. Under the agreement both the foundation will provide savings and other services to at least 40,000 poor and
women clients in Uttar Pradesh. Grameen Foundation India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of US based Grameen
Foundation.
4. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the two units each of 600 MW of Shree Singaji Thermal Power Plant in the
Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Shree Singaji Thermal Power Plant is a coal-fired project located in Khandwa in
Madhya Pradesh.
5. First Kisan Call Centre (KCC) of North- East opened in Agartala, Tripura. The Kisan Call Centre will give immediate
solution and real time advisory to farmers if they need expert consultation regarding seed procurement, agro-metric,
fertilizer, soil health, pesticides usage and marketing of the produces.
6. Maharashtra government scraps 5% quota for Muslims: The Maharashtra government has decided not to give 5%
reservations to the Muslim community in both jobs and education. The state govt. has cancelled the earlier resolution of
July 24, 2014 brought in by the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government that announced the 5%
reservation to the Muslim community.
7. Two Ghats in Varanasi equipped with Wi-Fi facility: Under the Prime Minister's dream of 'Digital India',
Dashashwamedha and Sheetala the two main ghats of Ganga in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) are now equipped with Wi-Fi
facility.
8. Goa ranks 6th in World's best night life cities: Goa has been positioned sixth in the list of top 10 nightlife cities in the

9. Adani to set up 10000 MW Solar Park in Rajasthan: The Rajasthan Government signed a deal with Adani Enterprises
Ltd (AEL) to set up 10000 MW Solar Park in Rajasthan. Adani Enterprises Ltd, the flagship company of Adani Group will
set up solar project of 5000 MW on its own in the next five years.
10. ADB signs $400 m loan pacts with India: India and Asian Development signed an agreement, to improve district roads
in Madhya Pradesh and to support improvements to power transmission and distribution systems in Assam. ADB will
provide $350 million loan to upgrade district roads in the state of Madhya Pradesh and $ 50.2 million loan to Assam. The
project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2018.
11. Bihar government has announced to give 35% reservation to women in Non Gazetted jobs in the state.
12. The Bihar government decided to provide free education to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and girl
students till Post Graduation (PG) level in the state. The government would reimburse the financial loss to such
universities/colleges after gathering information about it.
13. Madhya Pradesh won national award for excellent work in MGNREGA: Madhya Pradesh has been awarded the 10th
national award for excellent work in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act - MGNREGA. This award
has been given to Madhya Pradesh for convergence of MGNREGA and other schemes for construction of permanent assets
and for excellent work in providing opportunities for earning permanent income. Madhya Pradesh is at the top in
construction of permanent assets through MGNREGA convergence in the country.
14. Kerala became the first state to have first Hi - speed Rural Broadband Network: Indias first Hi - speed Rural
Broadband Network (National Optical Fibre Network) was commissioned by the government in the Idukki district of
Kerala. Under this programme, all 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats in the country will be connected on optical fibre. The aim of
this service is to offer people friendly services like E - health, E - Commerce and E - Education.
15. Kerala to get first International Institute of Music: An International Institute of Music will be soon open in Kerala,
which will be founded and built by Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his family trusts.
16. PETA to build Indias first fenced elephant sanctuary near Bengaluru: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) has announced to create Indias first fenced elephant sanctuary near Bengaluru. This will be the first fenced
elephant sanctuary in India which will be built near Bannerghatta Biological Park in Karnataka.
17. Arunachal Pradesh becomes the first state in the country to launch web-based education programmes for all
schools. The programme was formally launched by the state Chief Minister NabamTuki. The system is a solution built for
teachers and students through Chrome books to bring the power of the web into classroom. The State government has
started the programme in collaboration with Google. Christened as Chief Minister Global Education Programme, the
education system would initially be launched in 50 to 100 schools in the state.
18. Uttarakhand becomes No. 2 in tiger population: Uttarakhand has ranked second among Indian states in terms of tiger
population after Karnataka in India. Uttrakhand has registered 340 tigers - a rise of 113 tigers since the last census (227)
becoming the second state in the country. Karnataka with 406 tigers became the first state with highest number of tigers
in the country.
19. Baba Ramdev appointed as brand ambassador of Haryana: Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev has been appointed as the brand
ambassador by the Haryana State Government. The appointment was a part of government of Haryanas ambitious plans
to promote yoga and ayurveda in Haryana state.
20. Netherlands& Thailand to help Sikkim in development of floriculture: Sikkim has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with Netherlands and Thailand for development of floriculture in the state. Both countries will provide
expertise and technology in the development of Cymbidium and other floriculture.
21. World Bank assistance for building toilets in Chhattisgarh: World Bank will extend financial aid to build toilets in
tribal-dominated villages of Chhattisgarh under the Centres flagship Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
22. Inox Wind to set up wind turbine manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh: Gujarat Fluoro chemicals subsidiary
Inox Wind Ltd (IWL) will set up a single location integrated wind turbine manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradeshs
Barwani district. The plant will be set up with an investment of over Rs. 300 crore.Inox Wind Ltd (IWL) will set up 400
MW of projects in Madhya Pradesh making it the largest developer in the state.
23. Karnataka, SunEdison sign agreement: The Karnataka government and SunEdison have signed an agreement to develop
5 gigawatts of renewable energy within 5 years.

1. India and Qatar sign 6 agreements to strengthen bilateral ties : India and Qatar signed six pacts of understanding in
key areas including Transfer of Sentenced Persons and Radio and Television.

Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons - Under this agreement, Indian prisoners convicted in Qatar can be
brought to India to serve the remaining part of their sentence. Similarly Qatari Citizens convicted in India can be sent

ii. Cooperation in the field of Information and Communication Technology: The pact would provide enhanced business
opportunities for Indian IT industry in Qatar.
iii. The third MoU was signed between Ministry of Earth sciences and Qatar Meteorological Department for Scientific and
Technical cooperation Qatar Meteorological Department under the Civil Aviation Authority, Qatar.
iv. The fourth MoU was inked between Diplomatic Institute of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar and Foreign Service
Institute, MEA.
v. The fifth MoU pertains to cooperation in the field of Radio and Television.: This MoU is aimed at encouraging regular
exchange of radio and TV programmes and material between Prasar Bharati of India and Qatar Media Cooperation.
vi. The final pact was signed for mutual Cooperation and Exchange of News.
2. India and Kyrgyzstan signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation on textile and
clothing. The MoU seeks to strengthen bilateral cooperation between both nations in the three fields including Textiles and
Clothing, Silk and Sericulture and Fashion.
3. India signed five agreements with Mauritius: India offered $500 million concessional Line of Credit to Mauritius for key
infrastructure projects. The five agreements signed between the two countries include:

ii. Improvement in sea
iii. Air transportation facilities
iv. Import of Indian mangoes;
v. Co-operation in the field of traditional system of medicine and homoeopathy.
4. India and Sri Lanka signed four agreements: India and Sri Lanka signed four agreements during Narendra Modi's
maiden visit to the country, the first bilateral tour by an Indian premier in 28 years. Both the countries has signed four
agreements on visa, customs, youth development and building Rabindranath Tagore memorial in Sri Lanka.
Note: Narendra Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister and only the second foreign leader after British Premier David
Cameron, who visited Jaffna in the war-ravaged Northern province.
5. India & Norway will work together on climate change: India has team up with Norway to understand the global
climate change, and to study about the Indian monsoon. Both the countries will also help in the study about the linkages
between climatic variations in the polar region.
6. India and Seychelles sign 4 agreements: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Seychelles where both the
nations signed four agreements to boost security and maritime partnership.

Mutual Protection of Classified Information, to provide the framework for enhanced cooperation in the defence sector.
8. India and Sri Lanka have agreed to explore avenues for enhancing cooperation in oil and gas sector.
9. Tata Communications Ltd signed a 20 million US dollars multi-year deal with Germany-based KION Group to provide
global Wide Area Network (WAN) services to the 280 sites of KION across 30 countries.
10. Berger Paints India Ltd. has signed an agreement with the Govt. of Stavropol Region, Russian Federation of $5 million to
set up an industrial coatings plant in Russia. According to Chairman of Berger Paints "The plant will be developed with the
primary capacity of 3,000 tonnes a year which will be increased up to 50,000 tonnes a year".
11. Mumbai University has signed an agreement with Indian Railways to set up a Rail Innovation and Technology Centre to
train students for expertise in Railway Engineering. Under the agreement Indian Railways will allocate 142.89 crore
rupees budget for the centre over the next five academic years. Mumbai University will educate the candidates at
university's campus Kalina, Ratnagiri and Kalyan.
12. India and Australia signed MoU for skill and infrastructural development in sports.
13. India to grant $ 60 million LoC to Guyana: India will offer 60 million dollars Line of Credit - LoC to Guyana for its road
infrastructure projects.

Important Schemes launched by Govt. of India


1. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): The scheme launched by government of Indiawith an outlay of 1500
crore rupees. The scheme aims to impart skill training to youth with focus on first time entrants to the labour market and
class 10 and class 12 drop outs. The scheme will be implemented by the Union Ministry of Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). It will cover 24 lakh persons and skill
training would be based on the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) and industry led standards

2. Atal Pension Yojana (APY): The scheme is mainly for workers in unorganised sector, to encourage the habit of saving for
their retirement. The scheme will be administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA)
and will be launch on 1st June 2015.Atal Pension Yoajana (APY) will replace the Swavalamban Yojana NPS Lite scheme
which was launched by the UPA government.
Major Points of the scheme:
1. The subscribers who will joined the scheme would receive the fixed pension of Rs. 1000 per month, Rs. 2000 per
month, Rs. 3000 per month, Rs. 4000 per month, Rs. 5000 per month, at the age of 60 years, depending on their
contributions.
2. The minimum age of joining this scheme is 18 years and maximum age is 40 years.
3. Under the scheme, a subscriber can contribute for minimum period of 20 years or more and pension payment will
start at the age of 60 years.
4. Under the scheme government of India has decided to co-contribute 50% of the subscriber's contribution or Rs. 1000
per annum, whichever is lower, to each eligible subscriber account, for a period of 5 years, i.e., from 2015-16 to 201920, who join the NPS before 31st December, 2015 and who are not income tax payers.
5. All bank account holders under the eligible category may join the scheme with auto-debit facility to accounts, leading
to reduction in contribution collection charges.
6. Subscribers who will join the scheme before December 31, 2015, can availed
the benefit of government's co-contribution under the scheme.
7. Subscribers who are already enrolled in Swavalamban Scheme would be
automatically migrated to Atal Pension Yojana, unless they opt out.

3. Bhagyashree scheme launched in Maharashtra: Bhagyashree scheme for girl


child was launched by Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis in the state.
Major Points of the scheme:
1. Under the scheme, the state government will deposit an amount of 21200 rupees in bank for a girl child born in a Below
the Poverty Line (BPL) family.
2. The scheme aims at providing one lakh rupee on maturity after the girl completes 18 years of age.
3. The scheme would be linked to the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme of Union Government.
4. Bollywood actress Bhagyashree is the brand ambassador of the scheme.

4. Aapki Beti Humari Beti girl child scheme launched in Haryana: The scheme launched by Haryana Chief Minister
Manohar LalKhattar in the state.
Major Points of the scheme:
1. The scheme was launched with an aim to combat the problem of declining child sex ratio in the state.
2. The scheme will be implemented in both rural and urban areas of the state.
3. Under this scheme, the first girl child born on or after January 22, 2015, in SC and BPL families will be eligible to receive
Rs 21,000.
4. Similarly, all second girl children born on or after January 22, 2015 of all families will also get Rs 21,000.

5. Families, where twin girls or multiple girls are born, will get Rs 21,000 per girl child.

5. New Urban Rejuvenation Mission to replace JNNRUM: According to the Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu,
government will replace Jawahalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, JNNRUM with a new Urban Rejuvenation
Mission to bring more areas for development under its ambit. Under the proposed scheme, cities with population of 1 Lakh
or above will also be covered.The new mission will focus on modern concept for cities planned using Geographic
information system (GIS), best transport facilities and will have solid and liquid waste management system to develop
clean cities." JNNRUM had already completed its term, which was launched by previous UPA government.
6. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana: It is a low premium insurance
scheme which was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Union
Budget 2015/16. The scheme will also be linked with the Pradhan Mantri Jhan
Dhan Yojana.

Eligibility: Person with the age group of 18 years to 50 years and have bank
account are eligible for the scheme. If the account is opened before attaining
the age of 50 years, the life cover would remain intact up to the age of 55 years,
if premium is paid regularly.

Annual Premium: Premium payable for this scheme is Rs.330 per year i.e. less
than Rs.1 per day.
How to avail the benefit of this scheme?
First step is to link your Aadhar card with the bank account. After linking
Aadhar card with bank account, a simple form is to be filled every year and to
be submitted to the bank before 1st of June, in order to avail the benefit of this
scheme.

Key points of the scheme:


1. The payment of premium will be directly auto-debited by the bank from the
subscribers account.
2. Risk coverage of Rs.2 lakhs in case of death for any reason.
3. The scheme will be offered by Life Insurance Corporation and all other life
insurers who are willing to join the scheme and tie-up with banks for this
purpose.
4. The policy holder is required to renew the policy each year and the premium will be auto-debited from his bank account.
5. Nominee name is to be given in the form along with relationship. In case the nominee is minor, name of the guardian is
also to be given.
6. Government contribution towards this scheme will be decided separately each year. The contribution will come from the
unclaimed money lying idle in various public welfare fund.
7. The premium paid will be tax-free under section 80C and also the proceeds amount will get tax-exemption u/s 10(10D).
